Hello, #EDpiper family! I'm Cindy Woody, Texas educator since 1990! A fond memory of school: When my 3rd grade teacher introduced me to Little House on the Prairie books & turned me loose to read to my heart's content. Still a passionate reader today. #EDpiper
Hi all! Jessica, Ed Specialist for Digital Innovation & Social Studies at ESC Region 12 in Waco...favorite school memory was writing a story that was published in the paper when I was in 2nd grade! #EDpiper
Hello #EDpiper friends! I am Sarah, from Waco, TX. My fondest memory was my third grade teacher, Ms. Amai. She always had the best books for us to read and a wonderful little reading corner.
A1: Modern learning is personalized to meet the learners need, whether that be teacher or student. Personalization can come in the form of work flow, seating, pace...so many options! #EDpiper
Hey #EDpiper friends! I am Laurie from Austin, TX! My fondest memory was 5th grade camp. An entire week in Oklahoma learning more about math and science.
Interesting read on what it means to be a modern learner. This blog changed the 4Cs to compile, contribute, combine, & change. I typically use communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking & then add choice as the 5th C. #EDpiperhttps://t.co/0g1ox4IXT1
Good evening y’all. Elyse in the dfw area. Social Emotional T and one of my favorite memories is the relationships and love/support my Ts gave. #EDpiper
Hi everyone! Kerri Ranney here. One of my fondest memories as a student was designing an album in HS English. We chose the playlist, the album cover, and the writeup on the back. Memories! Thanks for being here tonight! #EDpiper

A1. This graphic represents the modern ADULT learner, but I see many parallels in modern students. They want learning to be "micro," important, personalized, on-demand, collaborative (or not!) because they are distracted by an increasingly complex world around them. #EDpiper
A1: Modern learning is a combination of many different things: each child gets their needs met where they are, in the way in which THEY learn, while teaching to the whole child- SEL included. #EDpiper
Love this article that references 3 pillars of modern learning...continuous, content-rich, and immediate...very much what andragogy states...looks like pedagogy is aligning. #EDpiperhttps://t.co/fY3GQ2jqko
You would ask me that! I remember it being focused on female empowerment, the fuest few songs were RESPECT and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and when you took the record out of it, it revealed the female symbol. My team had fun with our theme. #EDpiper
I didn't get to tell my fondest memory in school: there are many, because I was very blessed. However, the earliest one I have was in 4th grade when I wrote a narrative story that was praised by a teacher who rarely ever did. I knew I'd always love writing from then on! #EDpiper

In case you missed it, Q2 - What do you wish parents knew about what modern learning looks like? Great question! Be sure to add the hashtag #EDpiper to all tweets.
A2: I wish Ps understood that learning changes...and that's ok...the change doesn't mean that their learning was bad...our kids just need something different. #EDpiper
A2: That learning is chaotic at times. Students are learning at various points and speeds. No 2 students are learning at the same time, Having a sense of understanding. Come observe. #edpiper
A2. If it looks the same today as it did for parents when they were in school, are we not doing something wrong? Maybe we should ask, how should it #NOT look? #EDpiper
A2: I wish parents knew that "traditional" classrooms don't exist anymore. Each class has their own identity & we are meeting their kids where they are in completely different circumstances than when they were in school. #EDpiper

A2 Modern Learning is meeting the needs of students in a different fashion. It may look different. However, it’s not bad. It’s ever changing based on the need of the student. #edpiper
Q2: I wish that parents knew that learning does not look the same as it did when they were in school. Sometimes parents do not see the value in how students are learning. #EDpiper
A2. Seating no longer like tombstones facing front of cemetery. Learning spaces designed for flexible grouping, collaboration. Technology = normal, invisible part of learning, as common as pencils. Learning can be noisy, messy. Value of the process as well as product. #EDpiper
My fondest memory was when my high school band director asked me to take the lead as a drum major. She gave me confidence to grow in so many ways. I never really believed in myself until then. She was a change agent in my life. #EDpiper
Yes! Always think it's interesting that the parent with the modern cell phone is frustrated with the child who doesn't solve the math problem with the old algorithm. #EDpiper
A2. I hear from parents how they handled it all without the problems we have now so why cant their kids. I wish they could see the pressure that is put on kids these days and the higher academic requirements. #edpiper

Allowing Ss to drive their own learning by asking HOT questions, allowing them to collaborate and discuss, and to present their findings. Even when wrong, Ss need to discuss why and how to fix. Using technology to collaborate outside of the classroom.
A2: It is okay that we don’t all learn the same way. What works for one student, may not for another. We have to be flexible and learn how each S learns best...this is done through trial and error! #embracefailingforward#edpiper
It can be hard for parents to understand how much teaching & learning have changed over the past decade or so. Here's a great top 10 list. #EDpiperhttps://t.co/nsQ4B8u1hp
A2: That the structure of the classroom, school, roles, and responsibilites are very different than they were even 10 years ago. I think transparancy and communication to parents is the most effective way to increase awareness and understanding. #EDpiper
I often joke (not really joking) that if parents don’t want learning to look different than when they were kids, they should give up all of the modern conveniences they have accumulated since then too. #neverhappening#EDpiper
It’s so cool to see this point of view carried out in design. Students can really see how their learning is valued when you showcase #processoverproduct. #EDPiper
A3: I wish Ps understood the value of lifeskills taught through experiences within the home and reading every night are more powerful than any workbook that Ts ever sent home. #EDpiper
I often joke (not really joking) that if parents don’t want learning to look different than when they were kids, they should give up all of the modern conveniences they have accumulated since then too. #neverhappening#EDpiper
A3: The quantity of homework does not always equate to quality; we want Ss to know how to critically think and create. Stacks of worksheets are no longer the norm! #EDpiper
A3: That the volume of homework and amount given does not accurately measure how well you know the coursework, it is how you are able to apply it in the end. #edpiper
A3 Our students are on a journey that’s full of trials, failures, and successes. It’s personalized and not a one size fits all. Be a stakeholder in every student’s education & not just a spectator. #edpiper
I was a budding James Patterson...wrote a story abt a missing kid who was abducted but was able to save themselves using Hansel & Gretel skills. #EDpiper
The control should be credited to the great team of teachers and staff, who ALWAYS go beyond what is needed. They constantly do whatever it takes! #EDpiper
It's critical to let children experience productive struggle. If they're making all As, they aren't being stretched & challenged. The quickest, brightest student in class still deserves a full year's growth, which means a gap between what he/she can do now & at the end. #EDpiper
A3: Sometimes homework isn't traditional. Sometimes it's asking questions about their family history, sometimes it's reading together, sometimes it's actively looking for grocery store prices....homework isn't always a textbook or workbook. #EDpiper
step 1) go to the store and buy shaving cream *if don't already have any* 2) find a clean space *floor will do* 3) spray shaving cream on the area and come up with a math problem 4) solve in shaving cream #edpiper
A4: I wish Ps knew that you have to prepare for STAAR way before the night before...I hate the night before tips because that's stuff we should be doing as good parents year round not for STAAR but for overall success. #EDpiper
And what does an A really mean these days? Are we celebrating the kids who learn it the quickest or those that put in the greatest commitment to their learning? #EDpiper
It can be hard for parents to understand how much teaching & learning have changed over the past decade or so. Here's a great top 10 list. #EDpiperhttps://t.co/nsQ4B8u1hp
R4: Honestly, I wish parents knew that although these are “high stakes tests”, don’t stress your child out. Breathe, everything will work out the way it is supposed to be. #EDpiper
I remember that moment as a teacher when it dawned on me just how truly abstract the concept of an “A” really was. A veteran principal challenged me to defend a grade & really quantify & qualify what it represented. I was stunned. It changed something for me. #EDPiper
R4: Honestly, I wish parents knew that although these are “high stakes tests”, don’t stress your child out. Breathe, everything will work out the way it is supposed to be. #EDpiper
My night before coaching for my kids sounds like this: (1) do your best work, and (2) don’t quit when you want to. The rest, including the score, is just details. #EDpiper
R4: we put so much pressure on kids and teachers feel it too. I wish we could get people to realize that our tests are far different than those in different countries and our Ss are different also. #EDpiper
A5: Putting pressure on class rank and GPA is not as important as obtaining the content necessary to move from one level to the next and be able to provide for society. #edpiper
Tests mean more for some kids than for others. And they're more a snapshot of how the student tests and how school is or isn't serving the student than how much the student actually knows. #EDPiper
The STAAR test is a measure amongst many. It carries weight like other high-stakes exams. In the end, we measure Ss w/ a variety of data sets. If a test determines areas of weaknesses/strengths, we will use the data to make informative decisions about the child & school. #EDpiper
My opinion, too much. Think about the protesting we do with NWEA, Acuity (used in Indiana), and other tests to measure progress. Why not use this for student engagement in class activities that focus on 4Cs. #EDpiper
My adult daughter recently thanked me for not putting class rank & GPA pressure on our kids. They had talked about it & were grateful for a well-rounded, enjoyable school experience where they were allowed to pursue passions regardless of rank. PS They turned out great. #EDpiper
A5: My daughter is a sophomore...we don't talk abt rank...we talk abt what she's learning, how she'll use it eventually and whether she feels successful...I don't care abt rank, I want her ultimately to have passion for learning. #EDpiper
Q4: I have seen students break down because of the pressure. High stakes testing does not test a child's true knowledge and worth. It's so hard explanining that to them. #EDpiper
Sometimes character is far more important than a GPA or class rank. I have a good friend that just got his doctorate that was an IEP kid in school. What does that say about labeling and class rank? #EDpiper
A5: what concerns me is that some students take all AP courses and tough classes which will possibly affect their GPA. They could take regular classes and get a much higher GPA. #edpiper
A6: I wish Ps knew that using Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok effectively could lead to a career one day...but responsible use doesn't happen w/o Ps expectations and standards...not just Ts enforcing digital citizenship. #modeldigcit#EDpiper
A6: There are some amazing tools that students can use to supplement their learning! Ask your Ss to share these with you and how they are used to help their learning! #EDpiper
Here are some straightforward, easy to use ideas for parents to support their child's social & emotional development in a digital world. #EDpiperhttps://t.co/uOzcbSr6VD
A5 Classrank and gpa, while important, isn’t the end all be all. Our students must have vital skills after the rank and gpa hype. What about the after? #edpiper
It’s interesting when clients tell us they’re good at getting their kids INTO college but aren’t preparing them to be successful once they’re there. #EDpiper
Final Thoughts: Come to school, see what your child is learning, ask them questions about their day...those are simple steps that start a partnership. #EDpiper
WU: I send home an email every Friday to my parents and students recapping the week and letting everyone know the schedule for next week. I wish parents would discuss the plan with their students. Just because your child is in HS doesn’t mean Ps should disconnect. #EDpiper
Make schools a welcoming place that actually makes them feel like partners. It's not all on teachers, nor on parents. Leadership must embed partnership with families into a school's culture. #EDPiper
By keeping the lines of communication open. Even if that means a "conference" more than once a semester. Use the teamwork to best help the student, which is why we got into the profession anyway, right? #edpiper

Digital citizenship is a joint effort. Schools must bring parents aboard as partners and not just hold evening sessions led by police officers. Where's the teaching, where's the empowerment of students? #DigCit#EDPiper
A6: I wish Ps knew that using Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok effectively could lead to a career one day...but responsible use doesn't happen w/o Ps expectations and standards...not just Ts enforcing digital citizenship. #modeldigcit#EDpiper
I’ve started including my life FW in these meetings because I don’t like doing things TO my kids; I’d rather collaborate WITH them. It’s their learning experience. #EDpiper
Thank you to @kerri_ranney & all the dedicated participants in tonight's #EDpiper chat. We love hearing your opinions, ideas, & voice of experience as we work together to make our schools the best they can be!
