Hi! I’m Eileen and I teach special ed @HolmesMS_FCPS I’ve been reading”Learning to Improve” and I’m totally geeking out over it! So excited for others to geek out with me! 🤣@SaraKugler#NoVAedchat
A1 What data other then academic outcome data might support learning about the systems in your school? What types of data may need to be collected and analyzed to better understand the standard work processes and systems at your school? #NoVAedchat
A1 Empathy interviews are an awesome way to gather feedback. There is so much good practitioner feedback waiting to be tapped in our district. #NoVAEdChat
A1 Clearly looking at the data can paint a broad picture, but to truly get to see the details, observations need to occur (beyond the req’d evaluative ones). #NoVAEdChat
A1 get involved! It’s hard to see the big picture from your one position so offer to help with other committees or teams or events to see the bigger picture. #NoVAEdChat
@ClaireSilvaData , we talked about empathy interviews at the beginning of the year at the new SBTS meeting, but I would love more information #novaedchat
A1 I think we often think about scores or evaluations but there is so much more to learn - how do staff and students speak to each other in the halls? Do parents visit? Are teachers friendly & work together? Is there a meeting after the meeting to say what was unsaid? #NoVAEdChat

A2 When gathering feedback about improving on a new teaching strategy, it is recommended to seek practitioner's perspective. #NoVAedchat#improvementscience@FCPS_ISD
A2 Whether its teachers reflecting on their teaching practice, or students reflecting on their learning those learning by doing can illuminate improvements that benefit the school and school systems. #NoVAedchat#improvementscience@FCPS_ISD
A1: Get involved as ask questions. Through involvement in committees you start to see how things work and learn what isn’t working. It gives you a better picture of the school. #NoVAEdChat
Hey, everyone! Sorry I’m late. Mom duty and bedtime routines had to take priority for a bit, but I’m glad I could still join you all tonight! #novaedchat
A2 the feedback from students is often discounted or overlooked and I would argue it’s one of the most important!! I was just talking with @ProfeTravis about this today!! #NoVAEdChat
A2 I think it is important to get input from a variety of people - as a SpEd teacher, I work closely with a coteacher and several *amazing* paraprofessionals. Their ideas and feedback shape how my classroom functions on a daily basis. #NoVAEdChat
A2 For sure, the students. They're so often overlooked in making decisions and assessing challenges. They're our customer...why not ask them? #novaedchat
A2: I like to get feedback from my Ss. I have also started using student dm feedback as part of our PBIS Team discussions we look for ways to improve our school. Student voice is so important and at times they feel that their voice doesn’t matter. #NoVAEdChat
A2b I see challenges in obtaining feedback from paras when they are concerned abou overstepping their roles. I try to encourage them to give me feedback by implementing changes that they suggest - or by providing specific info when we can’t do something. #NoVAEdChat
A3 Improvement science recognizes that not all change is an improvement. When a learning strategy improves student outcomes, how is it shared around your school? How could sharing successes & improvements happen better at school? #NoVAedchat#improvementscience@FCPS_ISD
A2 For my class, I look to CT members, trusted colleagues (non-dept members can sometimes give great out of box ideas!), & admin. For school, all stakeholders - Ts & staff, Ss & families, & community. Challenge could be making good use of a huge amount of feedback. #novaedchat
Hey there #NoVAedchat! Margaret from @HolmesMS_FCPS! I’m leaving school after PTA, so my As to the Qs will be delayed, but I’m coming! Join us @inspiredlib!
A3 I like to take feedback and reflect for a bit before implementing any changes. I am happy to try new things - but I want to make sure the timing is right and that I’m not just making changes without thinking them through. #overthinker#NoVAedChat
A3: I use the feedback to adjust my classroom instruction. Feedback can help to guide school-wise decisions. We used the student feedback to decide on incentives for PBIS. #NoVAEdChat
I think this is important- recognizing the feedback of people not in your department. Sometimes when we all speak the same language all the time we miss the big messages we aren’t stating because they are understood. The outside perspective can help uncover those #novaedchat

A3 Reflection is key! For me, it’s important to reflect soon after getting feedback. W/o timeliness, feedback isn’t as effective. Same could be said for school-wide feedback. You should think through everything but can’t wait forever if need to implement change. #novaedchat
A1 #novaedchat How might you learn about the whole school in order to improve parts?
Read the School Improvement Plan. Embed yourself in the process and find an inroad to improvement.
A4 Variation in student performance can be difficult to attend to as a classroom teacher. How do your Collaborative team mates support each other with attending to variation in student performance? #NoVAedchat#improvementscience@FCPS_ISD
A3 I often need processing time. It’s thinking about how to use the Feedback to improve. Sometimes it’s thinking on my drive home or sometimes with my triad partners @Sa_rah_Olson & @scholarcation. Then i can move forward and make changes #novaedchat

A3 #novaedchat Once you have feedback, what might you do with it?
Reflect! Celebrate the good. Accept the bad! As an agent of change, figure out the next step
Q4 Identifying “positive deviance” (variance in outcomes that show positive gains or outcomes) requires close observation and data collection. What are some ways we can identify “positive deviance” in our system? #novaedchat
A5 If variation in student performance is a known then how do schools proactively plan for attending to variation in student performance? #NoVAedchat#improvementscience@FCPS_ISD
A4 In Learning to Improve pg. 55 it recommends studying positive variation to learn what to improve to scale. How is exemplary student work shared in CLTs?#NoVAedchat#improvementscience@FCPS_ISD#booksnaps
A4 I think variance can provide us opportunityto look at the practices that are working. Say when one teachers data shows Ss outperforming others in the team, what can we learn from that classroom practice and share with others? #novaedchat
Hey Debbie... thanks for listen! and for others in #NoVaedchat , here is some of my go to's for drive time podcasts. Also, check out the hashtag #podcastEDU where others share what they are listening to

Q5 When identifying variance in performance or outcomes, we also find “harmful variation” (practices that are not beneficial or lead to negative outcomes). How does your school or system reduce “harmful variation”? #NoVAedchat
A4 Variance definitely helps me recognize other teachers’ strengths and how much I can learn from them! When I hit a challenge in AP Lit, I’m always looking to my CT members to talk about how they’re scaffolding instruction and what their Ss are doing well. #novaedchat
A6 Improvement Science provides methods of systems thinking, disciplined inquiry, and accelerates learning that spread improvements at scale and mitigate “harmful variation.” #NoVAedchat#improvementscience@FCPS_ISD
A6 “The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching aims to build a field around the use of improvement science and networked improvement communities to solve longstanding inequities in educational outcomes”. #NoVAedchat#improvementscience@FCPS_ISD
A4 Before IDing “positive deviance” Ts first need to know that variation is OK! One thing that we’re doing @HolmesMS_FCPS is a T spotlight at staff meetings - seeing others thinking outside the box can help to encourage more variations. #novaedchat
A4 #novaedchat The answer may be in the question.
Close observation and data collection is key. Identifying these moments in instructional cycle is paramount.
