Hi Everyone! Thank you for joining the #fcsvanguard chat tonight! I'm excited to be here with you as we discuss ways to teach and coach outside of the sphere of technology.
  • jonathanadel Jan 17 @ 7:32 PM EST
As a school leader (AP at Holcomb Bridge) and 4 year Vanguard member, I've been thinking a lot about TIM, PL and SMF and how they are transforming what we teach and how we lead. I've also been on the idea of how we do these without technology. #fcsvanguard
  • jonathanadel Jan 17 @ 7:33 PM EST
Tonight, most of the questions pull in these 3 initiatives, and will ask you to talk about your awesome work that supported these initiatives, but didn't include technology. Tweets will come at 10 minute intervals starting at 7:35 to give everyone ample time to chat. #fcsvanguard
  • FCSVanguard - Moderator Jan 17 @ 7:33 PM EST

Q1: We have 3 initiatives informing our Vanguard work: TIM-O, PL and SMF. How do you leverage each strategy in your Vanguard coaching? #fcsvanguard
  • FCSVanguard - Moderator Jan 17 @ 7:35 PM EST
@EndicottSpot as @FCSVanguard for the chat tonight! Looking forward to reading all of your responses on this very important topic! #fcsvanguard
  • busingteacher Jan 17 @ 7:38 PM EST
Q1: TIM-O to create tech goals, PL drives the modality of instruction and SMF provides the “what”...guaranteed and viable curriculum. #fcsvanguard
  • jonathanadel Jan 17 @ 7:39 PM EST
Do you think of the 3 flowing together in one particular direction, or does the arrow go both ways? #fcsvanguard
    In reply to @busingteacher
  • csuttoneducator Jan 17 @ 7:39 PM EST

Q1: We have 3 initiatives informing our Vanguard work: TIM-O, PL and SMF. How do you leverage each strategy in your Vanguard coaching? #fcsvanguard
  • mkpardee Jan 17 @ 7:40 PM EST
A1: TIM-O is like the formative assessment, and PL and SMF are the "tools" that help guide the coaching process. For example- TIM-O shows that tech is all teacher directed- PL provides you a strategy for choice and voice- SMF shows you what to focus on #FCSVanguard

Try to combine SMF and PL to show how it all fits together! TIM-O can be used to inform implementation of PL! #fcsvanguard
  • EndicottSpot Jan 17 @ 7:42 PM EST
A1: Great question! I have been using the TIM as the data point following the observation. Fortunately, PL is highly functional in my coachee's room. I look forward to seeing how SMF will serve as the framework the work, but haven't experimented yet! #fcsvanguard How about you?
  • busingteacher Jan 17 @ 7:42 PM EST
I think a balance of all 3 can be the best approach...I haven’t yet mastered it but I’m trying! #fcsvanguard

Q2: If your technology was taken away, how would you leverage Flexible Pacing in your teaching and/or coaching? #fcsvanguard
  • McClarinGrahics Jan 17 @ 7:45 PM EST
Provoking thoughts. We really must understand the role of technology. I have seen many teachers using technology to meet a mandate to implementing technology in their lessons plans. Technology is only a support or enhancement for well constructed, effective lessons. #fcsvanguard
    In reply to @jonathanadel, @FCSVanguard
  • JodiMos Jan 17 @ 7:45 PM EST
A1 The TIM shows the implementation of the PL. SMF gives us a way to talk about it with common vocabulary #fcsvanguard
  • csuttoneducator Jan 17 @ 7:47 PM EST
A2: I would handle my teaching with good old fashion hands-on activities. Students would need ways to work out their auditory or visual needs with non-technology activities. Good old fashion lesson plan/calendar books would be a must. #fcsvanguard @ayshafarooqi

A2 with or without tech, Ss use their info/data to decide what to do next. Goal setting and conferences also help these decisions. #fcsvanguard
  • DC_STEMtastic Jan 17 @ 7:48 PM EST
A2: This chart was used for so much!!! #fcsvanguard this helped me to “monitor” flexible pacing. Whether you have tech or not one key component of flexible pacing is monitoring.

A2 This is a great question. I guess if I didn’t have the use of technology, for flexible pacing in my teaching I would use choice boards for student choice and voice. I would have to really ponder what other tools I get use. #FCSVanguard
  • EndicottSpot Jan 17 @ 7:51 PM EST
Isn't it true! I love seeing the drive and motivation from the students when they are working toward a goal. Certainly can be done in many ways! #fcsvanguard

  • jeevans Jan 17 @ 7:51 PM EST
Exactly - the student conference is the driver of flexible pacing. No technology needed. Just a commitment to helping kids learn at their own pace. #fcsvanguard

  • FCSVanguard - Moderator Jan 17 @ 7:52 PM EST
Yes @JillMoniqueEdu. That is the best part of Choice Boards. They can be altered to meet any need. Tech or none, regardless, students are offered a variety of choice and voice (among many other PL principals!) #fcsvanguard

I think we could really utilize SMF for this. 3.0 demonstrates 80-90% mastery of the standard so if there are student who have demonstrated this they can tell us how they would like to show us 4.0. Such as a mini projects all paper of course. #FcsVanguard
    In reply to @jonathanadel
  • McClarinGrahics Jan 17 @ 7:56 PM EST

A3: For coaching, we have quite the toolbox of strategies, and most are technology agnostic. Modeling, co-planning, collaborating all get the job done. A personal favorite is modeling while the teacher monitors a checklist and ticks off each element as the see it. #fcsvanguard
