#TOSAChat is a chat on Twitter every Monday night at 8pm PST for TOSAs (teachers on special assignment), including all edtech and instructional coaches.
Hi all! So glad I made it home in time for this chat! Kim from SoCal, Digital Learning Instructional Coach. Ms. PacMan at the arcade. Hunt the Wumpus (Texas Instruments) at home (old school for sure) #TOSAchat
Hi my name is Sara Hill and I am also a student at Chapman University. One of my favorite games to play when I was a board game called "allowance"
#tosachat
Bhavini, Tech TOSA from Palm Springs. Favorite game was an Indian table top sports game called Carrom with my family when we first moved here from India. #TOSAchat
Steph Rothstein- TOSA with @MrOrreBiology, Dept Chair, English and Yearbook Teacher. So many game memories. My sister and I would make our own after visiting friend’s houses. A favorite was Dream Phone. #TOSAchat
Hello, #TOSAchat! Laurie, EdTech Coach, #ButteCOE. My favorite memory was playing Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers with my younger brother circa 1990. He used to get wildly upset when I would simply pick him up and cart him around until the end of the level. LOL
A1: Games are engaging and can be a great way to hook students. The real power in games is buiding a community where students feel connected to each other and can work together to create something meaningful. #tosachat
A1: Engagement, obviously. Also, when you "fail," you just get to keep going and try again. Start at the beginning of the level, and go, go, go! It's direct! #TOSAchat
A1: I find games within the classroom to be a clever way to get the point across, along with reaching students with various learning types to understand the curriculum for thoroughly.
#tosachat
A1: Few benefits off the top of my head: can strengthen collaboration, sportsmanship, strategic thinking, sparks creativity and helps with developing problem solving skills. #TOSAchat

A1 Games help to take the “seriousness” out ifbtve situation. It usually allows people to think positively first. People are usually happy playing games. #tosachat
A1 Games provide a connection to material that can excite those who may be competitive. It can also provide joy and levity. Just visited a school that emphasized “no turns and no outs” with games. All students participate so they don’t have wasted time. #TOSAchat
I 100% agree with that and love the way you put that. "It's all fun and games" is an expression for a reason. The pressure of perfecting the curriculum is eliminated when games are introduced to teach with. #tosachat
A1: I like to vary games so that sometimes it's the students competing against themselves, and then sometimes each other, and then sometimes just to achieve something together. #tosachat
A2: I love playing games with my own kids but I would not necessarily want to play with my students. I believe that it is enough to know that these games are a part of their lives and you are interested in the student as a contributor of knowledge. #tosachat
The teacher made a “twister” board with answers on the floor and repeated it multiple times so everyone could have a quadrant. When they couldn’t stay up anymore, they surrounded the board and wrote on whiteboards to help their team earn points. #TOSAchat
A2: It’s really about getting to know the things that our students are into. I remember studying what Bionicles are when I taught first grade. #tosachat

A2 I know a teacher that built a “Fortnite” like game as a digital Breakout Edu. Ss were engaged and didn’t even think they were learning because they were having so much fun. #TOSAchat
That sounds awesome. I love it when lessons also bring a physical aspect. Ss love to move lets give them the structure and watch them flourish. #TOSAchat
A2: I think it is fun to know what the trends are. You have to know what their interests are so you get some credibility...and you seem more relatable to them #TOSAchat
A2: Games like Fortnite are a great world for kids to create and jump into and build themselves. These games give them a stakeholder mentality within the digital age. Providing a game or the same mentality within the classroom would be a place to meet the students.
#tosachat
Love it when that happens. Time flies by too. As a former Math & STEAM Coach, Math games and STEAM design challenges definitely build gameplay and fun into the learning. #tosachat
A2 Games should feel purposeful. Love the idea of high school students designing digital games and growing that skill. The other part about online games is the digital community. If I bring this in for staff or students, this piece helps us connect and be authentic. #TOSAchat
A2: Paying attention to trends lets the students know that we're interested in learning more about them and what they are into. It helps build rapport and helps us reach them on a different level. #tosachat 🎮
A3: My go to was @Socrative. It allowed me to plan ahead to create games or create a quick way to gather information on what my students were thinking. If you want to go full gamification Rezzly is a great platform that lets you get into quest based learning. #tonsoffun#tosachat
A2: Some games are more easily relatable to curriculum. Ex: Minecraft was popular for creating Spanish missions & other historical buildings. Others are used for their theme; I had a Pokémon Reading Challenge for a few years. Others still are all curriculum: BreakoutEDU #TOSAchat
A3: Nothing in particular. I just love using a workshop format in all curricular areas - so I can incorporate gameplay more. Math games during Math Workshop, word searches for spelling practice, ... #tosachat

A3: We read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, in conjunction with a field trip aboard the Pilgrim ship. I had all sorts of challenges that led to earning beads and baubles ...We had so much fun. This was before techy games entered the scene. #TOSAchat
A2: Games help us connect with Ss we might not otherwise connect with; have them write or explain in a video fortnite or whichever game they like, have them teach me something; have them build a game #tosachat

A3: Kinetic games are the most fun. During the 13 years in my classroom, we played SWAT every year (two teams, each w/one fly swatter; the whiteboard had a grid of vocab words; first team to swat the correct word won a point). We loved it and it worked for all topics! #TOSAchat
A3: Today we had a scavenger hunt as we “wrote the room” finding numbers and sounds and writing them down. It was a great adventure. So it is my current favorite #tosachat thanks to YG for the inspiration!
A2 Hubby taught game creation through #Kodu and the kids loved it! They'd want to stay after school to keep working. Motivated, attentive, and ready to learn. #tosachat

Right now are kids are into Fortnite but whatever the trend might be, if we can meet them at their level they are so much more likely to connect with us. #tosachat

A3: A variety of games whether it was non-tech such as sight word Bingo to @Socrative and Jeopardy to assess learning and reflect on my own teaching the content. Students enjoyed it and they gave me feedback. #TOSAchat

We did that, too! On the Spirit of Dana Point. Those students are more in their 20s and STILL talk about that experience, especially the day sail the next morning. #tosachat
A3: I loved playing bingo & Jeopardy with Ss, now with tech, @quizlet LIVE, @quizizz@GetKahoot make a hoop for extra points 🏀: gamify by using clues, escape rooms, challenges with incentives, multiple tries #tosachat

Now Mr. You are in Another Twitter Chat! is telling me what to tweet. Lol He says when he taught #Scratch, they could use it to create a book report, tell a story, or create a game. #tosachat

A3: There are so many great tech related games/apps but some of the best games were ones we made up on the fly. The kids were always so into it too! Scavenger hunts, bingo, beat the teacher, swat the word... all so much fun! #tosachat
A3 Haven’t used too many games in the classroom. One amazing moment with games was during my Service Learning Unit. Students ended the unit with a Give Back Opportunity where they developed an idea that helped them give back where they volunteered. #TOSAchat One student created
a gaming club and used the library and classrooms. He got prizes donated and called it Gaming for a Cause. Loved seeing how he brought in his interest and connected it. #TOSAchat
Hey all- I’m Ryan. I’m an Innovation Coach from the Twin Cities, MN.
I remember staying up WAY to late playing risk with my middle school buddies.
#TOSAchat
A4 I am working on a Leading Edge Certification in ONLINE BLENDED LEARNING and I will wear that badge with honor. Looking forward to adding it to my email. #TOSAchat
A3 I have an entire unit called the Amazing Race where we read non- fiction and learned about cultures all over the world. We used Kahoot but also I included some physical challenges and logic. I used a scoreboard and they loved seeing their ranking. #TOSAchat
A3 Sounds silly, but my Ss loved when we did quiz review. Right answer meant sitting on the desk or sometimes under the desk, or backwards in the chair, etc. #tosachat

A4 - "Best collaborator, "Effective use of prep-period", "Social-media master of memes, GIFs, and inspirational quotes"-micro-credentials! :) #TOSAchat
A3) I play board games still. I work with a small group setting & you can't duplicate playing RISK w/Ss. So many social skills to learn face to face! Ss I work with now have not played board games! #TOSAchat
A4 Recently on a PD Trip, my team played the game THINGS. It involves writing statements on slips of paper and guessing who wrote what. I was pretty proud that I guessed the most right. My badge wouldbe the “You Get Me” badge. #TOSAchat
A5: Video games and board games generally have 4Cs built into their DNA. Playing games feels engaging because we are gaining mastery for something that we enjoy. If we can make our classrooms and PD this way our learners would be better for it. #tosachat
A5 In our district @AlludoPlay PBL game Ts are able to demonstrate all 4Cs and they work through solving real world problems. #tosachat Ts like the flexibility
I made them on a slide deck with a template and inserted the sight words and or images. Then printed and copied and laminated them. Used math manipulatives such as counters to cover the words. Eventually became a center activity. #TOSAchat

A5: having a problem to solve or a challenge to meet/beat. Kids creating games supports the 4 C's. Instead of state reports, the kids had to create a game for their state...so much more fun than a brochure or float. (and this was 25 years ago!) LOL #tosachat
A5 Games connect others and this brings about all different types of communication. It also allows for teams& Camaraderie. They can help someone acquire knowledge and be the application of it. My team loves using Break Out Boxes and students make them! #TOSAchat
A5 With game-i-fying a class, students work together and each team member is valued. I liked incorporating a cheer or hand clap #kagan. It is an excellent way to build a positive culture. Plus students wanted me to post to our class insta if they had a high score. #tosachat
A5 - Think of all those Mario games and their sequels (Party, Kart, and Super Smash.) Sure, they're all Nintendo & kid-friendly, but what makes them all OH-SO-FUN is the creativity + abilities that users/players have! #TOSAchat
A5: Games are engaging and meaningful in part because of the socialization and teamwork involved in playing, even when we're competing we still make bonds. Those 4Cs really just fall into place when it's a quality game. #tosachat
A6: I think it comes down to community. If students care about the culture that you have created they will want to learn so that they benefit the greater good. We can use games to build a #bettertogether mentality in the classroom. We are all in this edventure together. #tosachat
A6 I think kids move away from extrinsic at their own pace. I didn’t really ever give out anything besides points and for most, they were satisfied with that. I found they enjoyed the competition more than the rewards. #tosachat
A6 Games allow Ts and Ss to become engaged with their learning. Once they are playing the need to succeed becomes intrinsic. They want to do it for themselves. #TOSAchat
A6: We have to find the "carrot" that is intrinsic not extrinsic. In my opinion, those carrots are fun and relevant. Creating experiences that are game like where learning, relevance and fun all intersect effectively. #TOSAchat

A6 Games are a beautiful way to encourage goal setting. I always feel they get the most from game creation and game play can be great for review. We learn most teaching others. #TOSAchat
A5: Games help you strengthen you skill sets, both hard and soft skills. When you are authentically engaged in meaningful games you will learn. Collaborative games can incorporate 4 C's. @breakoutEDU is a great way to support the 4Cs! #TOSAchat
