#sschat is a network of educators, resources, and ideas that started on Twitter, but has expanded to Facebook, an annual NCSS unconference, and more. Join us to chat asynchronously on Twitter or Facebook, or chat with us live on Mondays from 7-8pm EST.
What's up #sschat! Dwight from the beautiful Adirondack Mountains in NY checking it. I teach 7th grade social studies, and try my hand at making videos to connect with my students whether they've made it to class or not. https://t.co/5QMFWjB65N
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS affiliated w/ Indiana Univ. Also one of the #sschat co-leaders. Tonight's tweets will be coming from a few of us so look for the question cards.
Hey! I teach SS in central Maine and am Pres. of Maine Council for SS. We are looking for presenters for our conference on 10/22 in Augusta. Go here to submit a proposal https://t.co/nujuVhiywm I'm also happy to be here tonight and learn from you! #sschat
Hello #sschat. Becky Reed, Delaware. Soon to be retired. Envious of @classroomtools These last few days are hard. How do you decide what to trash, keep, share?
A1 The thing that never failed to engage students was presenting them with real world situations that required ethical thinking. See https://t.co/JcsA3wMV6I#sschat
#sschat A1 Using primary source speakers to engage our students. Honor to have my cousin, Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20, speak to our students in the History of Rock and Roll 🎸 class. Great questions and answer session.
A1) Glad to join #sschat for share-a-palooza. I teach 8th gr. US in CA. Favorite activity for student engagement has to be Socratic Seminar. It's an approach that has really grown on me and often times leaves my wowed by student response!
A1: My S’s learned a great deal from reading the autobiographies of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs then used a @Twitter format to discuss what they learned. #sschat
A1 when teaching social studies, discussing the really difficult and controversial topics. Sometimes we skirt around the issue and therefore shut students out. #sschat
A1 maps! I like having students view content/infographic maps (like @voxdotcom) and design their own w/GIS or other tools. Also games- role play/interactive/collaborative #sschat
Making comics on social inequities, studying comics as societal artifacts, making history superheroes, gallery walks, debates/trials in costume,, #sschat
A1 maps are really one of the best ways to get students to think about the unit. It makes them wonder and inquire into how places affected general history as a whole #sschat
A1 maps! I like having students view content/infographic maps (like @voxdotcom) and design their own w/GIS or other tools. Also games- role play/interactive/collaborative #sschat
A1 I love annotating text, whether it be documents, letters, maps or images. I allows Ss to make their thinking visible for deeper understanding. #sschat
A1: I really like getting students talking with one another. The more they're talking to each other, the more thoughts on a given topic they're getting. #sschat
I love inquiry/choice projects. I don’t even call them projects anymore bc that has a connotation- I call them ‘products’ bc my Ss produce something for a real audience. They just choose something they see as related to the unit of study and connecting to a current topic. #sschat
Making comics on social inequities, studying comics as societal artifacts, making history superheroes, gallery walks, debates/trials in costume,, #sschat
A1 I found sharing global news with @NewseumED FrontPages and @CNN10 engaging for my World Ss--- missing that with the Ss teacher. They ask what's going on! #sschat
#sschat A1 Also, Being able to have are students participate in two cultural conversations this year. Sociology discussed gender inequality with a class from Argentina 🇦🇷 & CE discussed current issues with a class from Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽.
I love student choice activities. Definitely helps get 7th graders more interested in medieval history (at least somewhat...). Also love a good graphic organizer! #sschat
A1) Role playing. With Ss, helps them embrace experiences of the past. Ancient Chinese Dynasties, Roman Soldiers, or Revolutionists during the French Rev. #strategies#sschat
A1: I love just trying new strategies in new ways. I like bringing in family photos, documents, & herilooms to introduce myself to classes & then have them do the same. Of course, we analyze them *before* explaining them. #sschat
A1 recently read about the social aspects of learning. This is often left out because of “control” reasons. I think using that social aspect is a great way to engage Ss #sschat
A2 when we were learning about governments, we talked about the current administration and why, despite its popularity, needed a second look -- especially since were moving to our unit on Martial Law in the PH #sschat
A1: My favorite activities involve putting students in the position to think about what they would do in historical situations. Making it seem more real and alive to them.
#sschat
A1- my students respond well to anything new! We had a timeline relay that got the kids up and moving, some amazing primary and secondary texts that gone students thinking and talking, and online “text” sets that students used to answer big q’s #sschat
A2) It's been challenging adjusting materials for the last lesson of my online world history course with regards to Iran nuclear deal and North Korea negotiations. #sschat
A2 we had this block called morning meeting, I or my students would share a news article/video they picked up and felt interested to share about #sschat
A2
In a global studies class, its relatively easy to talk about current events.
As for how I can say things without losing my job, I just remind Ss that if they said what *some* politicians said, they'd be suspended. #sschat
A2: I try to tie it in to historical events we are studying and showing the connection. I also ask questions to try to balance out the discussion & to make students think about their arguments #sschat
A2: Joe from CT joining late. I recently had Ss maintain blogs tracking current events and then discuss them w/other Ss. (Ss needed to read classmates' blogs and respond to them.) #sschat
A2 I teach a Global Issues class. We spent half the class talking about Syria. We looked at primary sources, watched documentaries, studied the history. Then wrote letters to the editor about what they thought we should do.
#sschat
A2: Sometimes it's just timing. I was in the middle of teaching about the Supreme Court today when a student pulled out their phone and showed class the news alert that had just come in about the SCOTUS decision re: sports betting. #sschat
A2: I'm really into @dianahess22 & others' approaches to deliberation on controversial public issues because it requires students to focus on texts, provide evidence for claims, & encourage all to talk (thus allowing some students to listen more). #sschat
A1: In my APUSH class, I give Ss extension credit to read current events articles related to what we are studying. Often from @TheAtlantic . Then Ss write a response. #sschat
#sschat A2 Able to bring in both of our Indiana US Senators, Todd Young and Joe Donnelly. They participated in a question and answer session. Great opportunity for our students to participate in civic engagement and ask their leaders questions.
A2 I let the students lead the way. I start every class with - “questions, comments, current events?” Comics are also a great and sneaky way to discuss current events in a non threatening way. #sschat
Q2- my 11th grade class is modern world affairs. It’s North Korea, Russia, China, Middle East. In 1 semester. This year I have hardly been able to keep up. I’m changing my lessons on the way to school listening to NPR every day!! #sschat
A2 - I like to have Ss research both sides of a controversial issue (Iran Nuclear deal today), choose the best arguments on both sides, explain why they agree/disagree and defend their position #sschat
A2 Ah, there's the rub--can't lose my mind or job! I use podcasts to talk about current events. @Newsela is also great at providing current event articles that are accessible for Ss. I also assign current event write-ups, so Ss are exposed to current events regularly #sschat
FYI: This table is from this short article: Hess, D. E. (2004). Discussion in social studies: Is it worth the trouble? Social Education, 68(2), 151-157. https://t.co/6YsSfD7rqA#sschat
A2: I also work closely with an AP English Lang teacher who runs socratic seminars twice a month. My Ss are in her class and select article related to history class. #sschat
I have Ss select historical issues that they see as relevant - I’ve had Jackie Robinson & Kaepernick, school violence in the 50s vs today, populist movements, immigration... if Ss are choosing and using @Newsela or something similar, inquiry not politics are the driver #sschat
A2 when our former president, F. Marcos, was allowed to be buried in the heroes cemetery (he was a dictator). Me and my students sat down to discuss the gravity of the actions and why people were protesting it. #sschat
P.S. had to keep myself neutral (despite opposing it).
Listening to NPR feels like work now.
That's a good thing, and bad.
I feel like it's hard to escape the real world ... but also I feel that it's my responsibility to remain tightly connected & aware of it.
#sschat
Q2- my 11th grade class is modern world affairs. It’s North Korea, Russia, China, Middle East. In 1 semester. This year I have hardly been able to keep up. I’m changing my lessons on the way to school listening to NPR every day!! #sschat
Definitely. Our US History team uses the text sets for students to build background information. And then Ss find contemporary connections to practice continuity and change over time. #sschat
A2) Also I love to read the news A LOT, so different convos come up naturally in class when discussing situations from the past and dilemmas in the present. #readmore#sschat
2B- I have Ss do national interests of the regions we study & tie to current events - and create padlet walls of current events and analysis. Also admit to losing my cool (in a WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON IN THIS WORLD??) kind of way a couple times... #sschat

A2 Important to connect news to themes/content. Also important to teach media literacy- @NewsLitProject Checkology and PBS Mediaocracy & @WeTheVoters video #sschat
Ooh, I love ending class that way! Neat! I can see how Ss could intentionally look for current events during free to time contribute to this daily discussion. #sschat
A2 We stayed local. Last August we examined a DOT map of a proposed bridge project. The construction impacted transportation to school. It opened this week. New traffic patterns. #sschat
A2 I'd like to have students look a national newspaper front page from 100 years ago today (or 75, 50, 25 or 10) and ID the articles that have proven important for their lives today. Then look at today's & figure out which will be important to them in 20 years. #sschat

Yea @Newsela has such great background articles and current articles. When I did student teaching, many of my students were ELL. It was huge to have some in #Spanish or other lexiles. #sschat
A2) Make everything relevant- Students support 1 of the following quotes about Confederate monuments on an exit ticket. If I am feeling brave, I may present the quotes on the board as a scale & students place their post it note along the scale. https://t.co/QAGhCYXurz#sschat
@Newsela has them already done. That's what's great about the resource. But we also select our own articles & Ts have different platforms for sharing: MyHaiku or Google Classroom. #sschat
A3 @flipgrid for student reflections. I was really happy with the app because I got to hear my kids speak (especially the shy ones) and get creative with the ways they present #sschat
Yea @Newsela has such great background articles and current articles. When I did student teaching, many of my students were ELL. It was huge to have some in #Spanish or other lexiles. #sschat
A3: Even some of my more challenging students have taken to the @icivics games. They've been a huge help with engagement when teaching about the Constitution and government powers. #sschat
A3: It's so simple but Google Drawing has been amazing for individual work & student collaboration. My Ss created a Top Ten List for every time period in APUSH. It ended being a great study tool at the end of the year. #sschat
A2 current events - here is a powerful online FREE comic from @Marvel and @ABC about a mother doing her best in Syria. One of my all-time favorite lessons - https://t.co/KDzdpGMmO7#sschat
A3: I have tried to integrate a tech tool into each unit project this semester: I have used Screencastify for screencasts, ELink for content curation, Google Drawings for digital posters, & Blogger for current event blogs. #sschat
A3: I also started making YouTube videos as followups to class, and they've been a huge hit with students and parents. Makes it easy to point students in the right direction after an absence. #sschat Here's today's: https://t.co/5QMFWjB65N
A3: some of my students have created some impressive things with Google drawings. I like to also use forms to student reflections and peer evaluations #sschat
A3 this year I used peardeck for the first time. I don’t do google slide type lectures v often because of engagement & peardeck transformed the few I have for background into much more engaging for Ss #sschat
A3) @Flipgrid really was a blast this year. They loved discussing things they learned without having to be too concerned with what others would say. Low stakes. #learners#sschat
A1: Giving students the opportunity to speak with experts in the field or discuss current events with other students from around the world using @Flipgrid. #sschat
I have not yet jumped into the hyperdocs pool, but I hear the water's fine.
Sounds like it connects well with #flippedlearning, which of course appeals to me!
#sschat
Random #sschat question. Anyone know how to easily add the hashtag at the end of all tweets? I know that if I'm on the hashtag and tweeting from twitter it will add to everything but wasn't sure if there was a way to do that in @TweetDeck or any other tips and tricks you all use
I had parameters: 10 terms with images. 1 answer to the time period EQ. 3 review questions. 1 link to a video. Some used pre-made images and some drew everything. #sschat
They take some time to set up, but with my school's shift to 1:1 next year... I may have to take a deeper plunge into the HyperDocs realm as well. #sschat
A3) FLIPGRID! 213 students and everyone finds their voice! Tech tool that I learned late in the school year but was able to implement the next day. #sschat#flipgridfever
A3) Google tools are great for creation, collaboration, and easily fit into Google Classroom management. Quizlet Live is a fan favorite. It’s quick, easy, and engaging for collaborative review #sschat
Washington Post has Retropod which is U.S. history focused (as far as I can tell). The episodes are really short. Could be a great way to intro a topic. #sschat
Additionally, can depend on grade-level or prior knowledge of students. Sometimes examining 2 sides of an issue is a good place to start in order to scaffold skills needed to analyze multiple points of view. #sschat

Free right now (after promo code ended), but we had our district tech coach do staff PD, our Principal was present and said he would get the site license for us next school year! #sschat
A4: We've integrated #civics into short ELA, math, science, and social studies lessons for grades 3-12. Looking for teachers to pilot test them by Jul. 20. Stipend $ for feedback. Please take a look and spread the word. https://t.co/O5vw0fUzZB#sschat
Here's one that I recently did. Ss read different articles about Israel & then created "top 10" lists of topics someone should know about Israel right now. We then discussed the lists collectively & ID'd patterns. #sschathttps://t.co/YaVyaKUXOa
A4: My Ss started their post-AP projects. The fav is creating a road trip stopping at historical sites, finding hotels, & restaurants. Teaches geography, finances, and history. And they enjoy @Roadtrippers#sschat
#sschat A4 Being able to take our Ss to ten countries this year: Russia, Canada, Sweden, Mexico, Israel, Denmark, Argentina, France, Spain, Brazil. Opportunity to learn about these cultures first hand. Opportunity for many of our Ss who will never get to travel.
I modified this activity from another teacher but for review for the #APUSH exam I did an APUSH GAUNTLET based on the avengers movie to review skills and content. It was a competition and my students were engaged #sschat
I really love starting the year off with examining pennies as "artifacts" teaching students to observe, think, infer, make a claim... and also see who can come of with the wildest evidence backed claim about the society who made the object. #sschathttps://t.co/u4BjCb1fyw
A2: @Flipgrid has been my favorite tool for providing SS with the opportunity to discuss current events. I plan on creating a new Grid for the 2018-2019 year which will invite SS from around the world to dicuss current events. #sschat
A4: Students enjoyed creating blackout poems for life during the Great Depression. We paired them with #primarysources in order to encourage analysis. #sschat
A4 I recreated 4 units in US History to be inquiry-based including inlcuding QFT and other techniques. One on social reforms with guidance from a group of awesome ME Ts led by our DOE specialist @madisonteacher#sschat#socstudme
Dan I make this point every time it comes up in #sschat. Why is it ticking you off this time. Granted I’ve been missing in action since November but why is it annoying you this time?

@dankrutka, @MsHolmesTeach, @bishop_derek
@listenwiselearn also has great shortened audioclips from podcasts and newsprograms plus suggested discussion ?s. They just hosted a great #worldgeochat last Tuesday on using podcasts in the classroom. Check out that recap. #sschat
I have challenged them to make one in my budget and I would consider it. Some come up with great themes. Had one visit haunted places. I was inspired by Sarah Vowell's book Assassination Vacation. #sschat
Sounds interesting. Have you read Walter M. Miller Jr.'s sci fi classic, A Canticle for Leibowitz? That is the question he explores in the novel. #sschat
#sschat A4 One of the best moments this year, our 2nd/3rd Graders shared the Pledge with our new friends from Israel 🇮🇱, they sang their national anthem!
A4 I feel like I finally maybe, kinda, pretty much figured out how to teach strategies for reading/analyzing/thinking like a historian this year .... but next year the curriculum will probably change to govt/civics so I can't use them anymore [sigh]
#sschat
Q5: If you could change anything about your current classes/course to improve it for next year, what would it be? What do you need to make this happen?
#sschat
A4
I told my Ss that I'd fund a $50 @Kiva loan, they just had to pick it and convince me in 30 seconds. I've never seen them so excited to work! #sschat
A4) My humble brag as of late is the cross curr. unit students are working on w/ ELA. Connects Civil War to Civil Rights, "How have people survived injustice throughout US History?" Students show learning with essay, film or art! https://t.co/s7ZTXSruDr#sschat
A5 With the shift to 1:1 next year, I'm looking forward to being able to truly plan more tech oriented projects & creation oriented assignments. #sschat
A4 Mentioned this before, but my Ss rocked a project where they researched a family member's migration story and compared it to the migration of pioneers & immigrants in the early to mid-1800's. So proud of all the work they put into that project! #sschat
A5
We've been doing Inquiry this year, but I don't think I've done it as well as I could have. What I need is more PD to help me implement it the best way possible! #sschat
Q5: If you could change anything about your current classes/course to improve it for next year, what would it be? What do you need to make this happen?
#sschat
Oh, I certainly plan to use a history-based approach to this new curriculum (whenever I finally get to see the final version!).
Even when I taught ELA for 8 years, I was still really a history teacher ;)
#sschat
Q5: If you could change anything about your current classes/course to improve it for next year, what would it be? What do you need to make this happen?
#sschat
A5 With the shift to 1:1 next year, I'm looking forward to being able to truly plan more tech oriented projects & creation oriented assignments. #sschat
A5 more field trips, more resource speakers, more research time and less teacher talk time. I've been telling myself that for the past 8 years already #sschat
A4 One of my favorite things has been having students “live tweet” during a lesson. Some of the ones they shared were hilarious and kids remembered the info #sschat
A5) Want to build more choice into my online world history course in terms of sources, how Ss can show their learning, etc. Need TIME (rolling enrollment so no summer break). #sschat
Q5: If you could change anything about your current classes/course to improve it for next year, what would it be? What do you need to make this happen?
#sschat
A5 I would snap my fingers and make it all inquiry-based with all of the learning targets, scales, and common assessments done and aligned with standards and Marzano approved #sschat
ELA & History go together like peanut butter & jelly! I spend just as much time teaching writing skills in my SS classes as I do teach history. #sschat
A5) I would love to focus more on ensuring my end-of-semester units don’t end in a rush simply due to time...need to be more purposeful in their conclusion #sschat
A5. Don't forget to read, relax, rejuvenate. I recommend The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt's New World. Did you know he spent a week with Thomas Jefferson? #sschat
Oh, my. That must be hard. That is the hardest thing for me with teaching world history even after so many years (figuring out what examples to use to best illustrate different concepts, trends, etc.). #sschat
I've used @RemindHQ to send short audio recordings to reach out directly to my students. Because of the increased communication they have ben more informed and I believe overall it creates more of a class community. Want to involve the parents more next year too! #sschat
A4) To introduce myself to my Ss I created a box of artifacts from life. Ss used them to make a claim, corroborate evidence, and debate to come up with a description of me. Then we flipped it and they came up with their own artifacts to introduce themselves to me. #sschat
A5: I would like to bring in professionals from the outside to give my students a better understanding of the real world, and the connections history has to modern day #sschat
A5: My classes ended last week & a new semester started today so I'm already implementing changes. I put in a lot of work (re)packaging my strategies to encourage engagement. Did a 20 Qs activity for students to get to know me today. Doing a Syllabus Excavation tomorrow. #sschat
You see the NY Times headline: "All we want to do is eat junk & watch each other play Fortnite" Only the article was talking about people in their 20s & 30s... #sschat
Very cool! Interesting way to bring family history into class content! We did something similar when studying the oral history traditions of Africa and the griots. #sschat
A5 After listening to Visions of Education Podcast #77 this morning on Teaching Equity v. Teaching Tolerance... I want THAT! https://t.co/RocGlMBer7#sschat
A5: I am taking a thematic approach to my US history class. I also want to provide my SS with more opportunities to speak with experts, to go on field trips (mostly virtual), and providing assessment choices. #sschat
Great question! Right now I'm stuck on trying to decide how (if at all) to define active/engaged citizen as so many different ideas for being involved in our democratic process. Maybe I've been looking at the wrong half of the term. #socstudme#sschat
I've gone through that one. I really love one that I can't remember the name of but @MsIppolito recommended to me years ago. Easy to follow, but so hard to find in the states! #sschat
How do current events
*Kids pick their own events.
*Must pass grandma test, impact the world test, interest test.
*They read and answer 4 questions. Summary, connection, opinion, question.
*We then form the "avocado of trust" (circled desks) and discuss every other week
#sschat
A5- I’m continuing to build literacy into my curriculum. I added excerpts from the March books, the Warmth of Other Sons, and plenty of primary sources. I really want to keep providing authentic experiences, instead of just textbooks/articles #sschat
I'm going to try the thematic approach in my APUSH class and work with the AP Lang teacher, I'm hoping this helps my students gain a deeper level of understanding of the content. Best of Luck! #sschat
A4: helped with GREAT simulation led by @sarahhottle71 for global trade and barriers - kids were so amped on day1 that 80mins flew by, no1 asked to go 🚽 and not a 📱 was seen. Summative will be a letter to a Sen/Rep or even @POTUS with trade recommendations #sschat
In reply to
@MsHolmesTeach, @sarahhottle71, @POTUS
A5 Telling Ss why we're learning what we're learning. Posting "Driving Questions" for each unit & chapter and explaining what soft or academic skills we'll focus on that unit. Plus, I want to be better about using formative activities to inform my summative assignments. #sschat
I need to work on Inquiry. This summer's goal is to dive deep into the C3 Framework and figure it out.
I'd also kind of love a year-long story/game situation...like time travelers or something? #sschat
Q5: If you could change anything about your current classes/course to improve it for next year, what would it be? What do you need to make this happen?
#sschat
Thx. A colleague recently convinced me of the power of packaging our activities with metaphors. Asking students to find the most important items in the syllabus became the "Syllabus Excavation." It's working well. #sschat
A5 I want to integrate more Ss mastery of learning. Time to plan, integrate, and wish license for some tools. Would also love flexible seating! #sschat
A5- I want to foster deeper inquiry based learning in AP government. Planning on incorporating my 20% Project (Genius Hour) into the AP course. Has been wonderful in non-AP levels; can't wait to see it take off in AP! #sschat
A6: My APUSH Ss have a choice. 1) Road Trip 2) Write Alternate History 3) Historical Music Video 4) Presidential/Historical Figure brackets. https://t.co/tfHHNCC3Dt#sschat
A6 I do some version of a Civil War pseudo-simulation [https://t.co/3aCr3q22pm]
Students learn to salute (helps my self-esteem too), gain some general knowledge of military ranks etc., and get to play educational games
#sschat
A6: Heard about an activity where students don't create something new, they have to summarize/make connections using the portfolio of work from this year. Anyone done this?? #sschat
A6: I'm finishing up my first year in middle school... Haven't decided yet on how to finish out the school year. I have a bit of curriculum I still need to finish, but want to get them excited about continuing to learn, even outside the school environment. #sschat
Don't forget that for some Ss their strongest "voice" is written so make sure they have the opportunity to share that way even during discussions and debates. It makes a big difference for some kids. #socstudme#sschat
A6: I often try to finish semester's by helping students find the meaning in our studies for their lives. Post-AP test we used to choose and complete community projects. In my ed classes, I often ask students to create something they can use in their classroom. #sschat
There's some good advice in this @edutopia piece about closing out your room in a way that's efficient for being ready to go in the fall: https://t.co/Xm6LsMKXDU#sschat
I saw a fidget spinner in class last week and it was like an artifact from an ancient civilization. We all stared at it till someone poked it with a pencil. #what#sschat
A6 another important element: surveying students about what worked, what didn't, what they think they learned, etc.
Don't let these surveys be anonymous: you need to align their responses with their performance!
#sschat
A6: All of the above. AP exam followed by culminating project in some classes and a gradual wind-down and final exam in others. At least no EOC this year. #sschat
US Hist/APUSH teachers: Have any of you considered/tried teaching your curriculum backwards, i.e. starting the school year w/late 20th Cent studies & worked back? I feel like it might help students make those important connections better, see those threads. #sschat#hsgovchat
ELA & History go together like peanut butter & jelly! I spend just as much time teaching writing skills in my SS classes as I do teach history. #sschat
@teacherforest we'll have to collaborate sometime! Been reading up on Mystery Skype & Google Hangouts. Would be neat to get Ss together that way! #sschat
A5: After everything I have learned in the blended/hybrid classroom this year, I want to explore @YouWillLoveHistory (on @instagram) and their flipped mastery process. I need to grow as a teacher using formative data to guide the process even when knquirynos the driver. #sschat
I get to end the year at the modern world, so I usually let them choose their Top 5 Events You Missed This Year from @Newsela and make a listicle. This year I may change that up and make it a persuasive activity with an awards ceremony on the last day of school. #sschat
US Hist/APUSH teachers: Have any of you considered/tried teaching your curriculum backwards, i.e. starting the school year w/late 20th Cent studies & worked back? I feel like it might help students make those important connections better, see those threads. #sschat#hsgovchat
A6: My #APUSH students have a couple of choices, they can do a APUSH theme park, or a historical passion project where they choose the medium and topic they want to research and feel people need to learn about #sschat
You're welcome! I learned so much from everyone tonight! What a great way to start summer--my head's swirling w/ so many ideas to work into my lessons! #sschat
A6) No end of school year countdown- finishing with Socratic Seminar on Civil War/Reconstruction, and a student survey that really drives planning for next year. #studentvoice#sschat
Current Events
✅Kids pick their own events.
✅Must pass grandma test, impact the world test, interest test.
✅They read and answer 4 questions. Summary, connection, opinion, question.
✅We then form the "avocado of trust" (circled desks) and discuss every other week
#sschat
A6- I am so crushed for time with this course that we are slamming the last unit which ends w/a inquiry project. I need the world to slow down a bit so I can teach it!! #sschat
I believe that flipped mastery looks different in ELA and SocSt than it does in math (and maybe science too). That's my presentation topic at @FliptechEC next month!
#sschat
In reply to
@trgriffin1, @CHitch94, @instagram, @FliptechEC
A4: Gave my students choice of topics on major events or inventions and their impact on us. 1990-2010. They wrote a paper and presented #sschat Almost no Ss used words on their slides. (They got the message)
