#UKEdChat Q1
How can teachers best ‘future-proof’ the learning of their pupils? Which skills will be most needed?
Pls use the hashtag & A1...
@UKEdChat
Bring more educators to this @UKEdChat session. Please RT😊
A1 | This information-loaded world makes it extremely necessary for teachers to enhance learners’ #infolit skills: in my opinion, #information literacy & information skills are crucial in any programme.
#ukedchat
#UKEdChat A1 Pupils need to be proficient at problem solving, computational thinking, and flexible at applying skills to different contexts. Empathy, caring and innovative are key skills for the future.
A1: resilience (given the competitive nature of educational pathways and job competition) critical thinking skills! Sociability and independent learning. #ukedchat
A1 I think it looks like there's a much greater emphasis on skills, so focusing in data analysis and reading graphs ect is going to be really important #ukedchat
Agree - #A1#UKEdChat Embed 21st century skills in all subjects – learn through problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, team work, collaboration, … (Future of Jobs Reports from World Economic Forum)
#UKEdChat - A1: With everything changing at the rate it is, I think it’s crucial to teach the skills of adaptability and flexibility. Encouraging this through problem solving activities will prep them well for future (unforseen) challenges
#ukedchat#A1 If the Beast from the East has taught us anything, its that learning needs to be able to take place outside of the bricks, mortar and snowdrifts of buildings. How can learning be accessed quickly when needed?
A1. We base our curriculum on developing learning dispositions at @DhoonSchool - self-belief, determination, positivity, energy and creativity. These are the 5 characteristics we hope to instil and develop in all of our pupils to help them with their #learningpower#UKEdChat
A1: Teach topics and skills which are interesting, relevant and transferable. The curriculum has some scope for schools to personalise what they teach and schools need to be willing to say 'that's no longer purposeful, let's adapt'. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q2
How should the curriculum change in (a) your subject/phase, and (b) more widely to help pupils in a future we can’t foresee?
Pls use the hashtag & A2...

#UKEdChat Q2

A1 #ukedchat for me its a buzzword but resilience...our students have been spoonfed to laziness at times so resilience will give them the skills to succeed
#UKEdChat Each current subject needs an element of problem solving and flexibility. A curriculum designed for the future, not stuck in the past, unless there are lessons to learn.
A1- by giving them knowledge that will put them in equal footing with others and the ability to gather and use knowledge to make informed decisions. We can't predict the future, but we can empower them to deal with it! #ukedchat
#ukedchat A1 - Students need to learn make sure that they are confident with not just software but hardware being used. Also resilience - too many students give up too easily
A1: ...I think the advent of life and learning skills like Growth Mindset has been a step in the right direction. These skills will carry through life with them. #UKEdChat
A1 - Can’t think of a single skill that people cite in ‘future-proof’ discussions that isn’t relevant now or wasn’t important for past generations. Knowledge, however, does need to adapt. #ukedchat
Communication. If you can communicate an idea well to someone with no prior knowledge then there’s a good chance you’ve understood it well too. Also, the ability to communicate opens up opportunities for most jobs, especially those ones that can’t easily be taken by robots!
Creating problem solving scenarios should be high on all teachers agendas - it teaches important skills and helps chn to apply knowledge - no brainer! 🤷🏼♀️ #ukedchat
#ukedchat A2 a) For History, more modern and applicable history that has had an effect on the modern world today e.g. Tudors are fun, but they not really applicable to a 2018 student b) more work skills based learning and assessing of skills formally
#A2#UKEDchat too easy for us to rely on ourselves as experts, too slow to change, need to review with everyone including students, community AND employers; evolution better than revolution to adapt in more timely way
A1. We need to keep teaching skills that will always be relevant in the job market - empathy, resilience, problem solving etc. We can only second guess the practical skills needed in the future #ukedchat
A1. We base our curriculum on developing learning habits at @LaxeySchool - challenge, positivity, failing well, sustaining effort, honesty, reflection and bravery. These are the dispositions we hope to instil in all of our pupils to help them with their #learningpower#UKEdChat
A2: I teach English and Politics. If there is any curriculum change, its being more cross curricula rather than purely being stand alone. Transferable skills. Thinking about thinking. Context informing current. Being up to date with pedagogy and digital learning skills #ukedchat

A2: Great question! Curriculum needs regularly reviewed, but without knee-jerk reactions. Primary and secondary's need to work closer together to maximise learning throughout school years #ukedchat
Great question (and I haven’t all answers)
I think it has more to do with creating a culture which models and encourages these (and other) positive learner traits
Easier said than done though
A2. I’d like to see a move away from closed book exams and a focus on recall in exams. The ability to check anything on a phone means this skill is not essential in the modern world. Research skills and the ability to evaluate the validity of research would be useful #ukedchat
A2: My main curriculum area, Computing, is a very adaptive subject and saw big changes when the 'new' curriculum came out. I think (like A1) it's important to keep an eye on trends and meet the children's interests. Reviewing the curriculum annually is key! #UKEdChat.
A2- secondary curriculum should have school wide context. When was the industrial revolution in relation to Shakespeare? Rembrandt in relation to the rise of Hitler? The brain works best we can 'bolt-on' to what we already know- we don't take advantage of this enough. #ukedchat

#ukedchat A2 - Not as a knee jerk reaction. Curric change and grade 1 - 9 change has resulted in indecision & feelings of uncertainty which is not useful to students or tchs - any change needs to be from the ground up & not a top down decision. Eg think - What is actually useful?
#UKEdChat A2: As whimsical as it sounds these days, the curriculum needs to move away from this endless pressure on English/Maths/Data and encourage opportunities for exploring and questioning from the children - encouraging inquiry and teaching critical thinking in the process
A1. We base our curriculum on developing learning dispositions at @DhoonSchool - self-belief, determination, positivity, energy and creativity. These are the 5 characteristics we hope to instil and develop in all of our pupils to help them with their #learningpower#UKEdChat
A1 - there has also been some interesting, counterintuitive research on negative impact of ‘future proofing’ students with self-belief. Students need autonomy but not misplaced faith in fairness of the system: https://t.co/rFp4Nqd60W#UKEDchat
I agree, 100%. Even when I was at school, I could never understand why I had to retain so much information for an exam when in reality I'd simply look it up... #UKEdChat
Beyond the opportunities of the gig economy, allowing young people to explore the threats and negatives #UKEdChat Hence a need to be flexible. No more jobs for life?
#ukedchat A2: let’s rethink the curriculum. Create time for non-subject specific sessions but allow students to create, explore, research & innovate. Genius hour, innovation hour, opportunities for students & teachers to explore ideas & possibilities. #FutureDriven
#UKEdChat Q2
How should the curriculum change in (a) your subject/phase, and (b) more widely to help pupils in a future we can’t foresee?
Pls use the hashtag & A2...
A2 - testing of curriculum perhaps needs to change? Five years of secondary education condensed to three one and half hour exams? Would like a lot more cross curricular applications. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat
A2 - Literacy and Maths (as a Primary school teacher) shouldn't change dramatically for future learning needs do to it being a basic to be grasped before moving on to more expert knowledge.
I agree! Primaries and secondaries working together in clusters will help avoid unnecessary curriculum repetition (I see this a lot in computing) and open up the opportunity for more new and exciting learning experiences, including some that secondaries can do better. #UKEdChat
A1 Resilience, don’t give up attitude fostered in a supportive yet progressive environment. Regular progress measures with meaningful feedback #UKedchat
By ensuring we teach students to a high standard of literacy and numeracy, so that these eminently transferable skills are embedded in young people. Also, modelling expectations, behaviours & encouraging emotional maturity #ukedchat A3 - teaching the whole student is what I mean
#UKEdChat Q4
What things that we currently teach do you think will disappear completely in the future?
Pls use the hashtag & A4...
@UKEdChat

A2 #UKEdChat Staff contribute regularly to CPD, both in departments and whole school. Works very well most of the time. Outside experts sometimes brought in for areas where staff aren’t well placed enough to deliver on that area.
Agreed. I loathe the fact that children seem to spend so little time doing things like experiments, art, design projects, etc. that they couldn't necessarily do themselves at home, especially disadvantaged children. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A1 a deep understanding of the current mathematics curriculum will develop creative resilient thinkers. Much needed for the future https://t.co/Ca3HRMmUJd
We have an issue with History teaching in Guernsey - some schools teach History whilst others don't - this means when they arrive at secondary, we cannot develop the higher order thinking skills until much much later, if at all #ukedchat
A1: Risk taking & creativity are must have skills, underpinned with opportunities to problem solve, innovate & collaborate. Dare I say more opportunities for project based learning, supported by working on real life business, community or cultural issues & problems. Make it real!
#UKEdChat A4 Things that will disappear? Could depend on the whims of politicians, but can’t see much appetite for business studies, although a re-design is needed to make it more relevant to the modern and future business worlds.
A4 #ukedchat very subject specific but the calculation of statistical tests. Computers are much more capable. Sometimes I wonder if the ability to discuss is dying out with the reliance on mobile phones
A3 #UkEdChat I’m not aware of any preparation taking place specifically for gig economy. Having said that, the gig economy is largely just traditional jobs outsourced for short term contracts, so preparation unnecessary in most cases. More focus on entrepreneurship needed tho.
Yeah, hopefully the clusters will help. Talked to an English teacher friend recently and she was amazed at the grammar etc content by end of primary. More dialogue definitely needed #ukedchat
#A4#UKEdChat Don’t think, but hope – move away from so many separate subject slots and towards more cross-curricular projects (mentioned already by a few for #A2)
#ukedchat A4 although subjects will alter (and diminsh slightly) handwriting itself will start to be less important (just think of Star Trek type PADDs 15 years ago a dream, now all common amongst most students)
Definitely, something I try really hard to resolve. Our students do lots of experiments in both Psychology and Sociology and I try to give complete independence by year 13 #ukedchat#heritageskills
A4 #UKEdChat I don’t think any of what we teach will completely disappear. Perhaps some processes taught in technology lessons? Basics of design would still apply though.
A3: Tricky one but I think earlier mentions of things like Growth Mindset and problem solving skills are part of the key to this, such as being adaptable, managing change, being resilient, standing up for rights, inventiveness... #UKEdChat
A4: The implicit way we teach some they are worth less and to manage their expectations. Also nonsense things like 'you only use 10%' of your brain', 'revise once you get to year 11' , 'you are either a kinaesthetic, auditory or visual learner' #ukedchat
So much of this comes down to the confidence of the teacher and the ethos of the school; this really should be encouraged as much as possible by SLT #UKEdChat
'Discussing reading with children is crucial in understanding the individual progress of pupils while also addressing the whole-school approach.' https://t.co/mdPdCczkIV#UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q5
With AI probably taking many jobs in the future, how can teachers remain relevant?

Yes, our SLT are very encouraging in terms of taking risk and encouraging independence. Our staff are also amazing at letting students into their classrooms to get samples for experiments. #ukedchat
I had former pupils come back to help teach programming to our junior children because they said they were repeating Scratch topics from primary and didn't feel challenged. Instead they honed their skills by teaching others. #UKEdChat
The best INSET rarely does fit all but @TeacherToolkit breaks the mould. Ross gave us an energetic morning of ideas tailored to our needs-theory, pedagogy and practical ideas to advance teaching-just brilliant.” Fettes College, Edinburgh

A4. I’d quite like to see the intense focus on neat cursive handwriting disappear @ primary.Writinh needs to be legible but developing typing is much more valuable IMO. Some SEN children have blocks about writing because the worry about handwriting #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A5 Teaching and learning is a highly social process, and we must never lose sight of this. We *are* doing, but not good for our mental health. Pupils learn much more than the curriculum in schools - a hidden curriculum - which includes many valuable lessons for life.
A5 #ukedchat I strongly believe that teaching is a skill not replicable by AI; how can AI react to behaviour, or explain a topic in 5 different ways until all students understand, how can AI understand student comprehension of a concept?
A5 There will always be a need for teacher https://t.co/rdPYSfsnbs the way there will always be a need for doctors.Teachers do a lot more than ‘teach’ in a classroom.Development of pupils through social contact is paramount #ukedchat
A5 The use of technology must be embraced in such a way that it empowers teachers to work smarter to the benefit of the student.and that the learning can take place literally anywhere at anytime! #ukedchat
#A5#UKEdchat See this more from students' viewpoint and jobs available; - teach and focus more on students learning the skills needed for modern and future society through our subjects; not focus so much on the traditional assessment strategies
A5. Teachers will always be relevant because we don’t just teach academic topics. Social skills are hugely important and need human contact and interaction #ukedchat
That's a great idea! Have heard about that sort of thing for PE through Sports Leaders but not computing. Might see if I can set up something similar.... #ukedchat
A4: Hopefully this unnecessary overemphasis on learning grammar at the level we are currently expected to in primary. I cannot think how it would have benefited me if I'd done it at their age and it hasn't stopped me getting into a great career that I wanted. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q6
What technology do you think will be used in the classroom of tomorrow?
Pls use the hashtag & A6...
@UKEdChat
Bring more educators to this @UKEdChat session. Please RT😊
#UKEdChat A6 who knows? No one could have predicted the advance in technology when I was young, and think the advance in technology will continue in many shocking and unexpected ways. Hopefully for the good of everyone, and not just the few.
I agree #ukedchat there’s over focus on handwriting and people saying that Y2 don’t meet ARE as descenders on their g (or other such nonsense) are too short!
A4: Since technology is rapidly changing, I think that handwriting will eventually disappear because almost everything can be done through technology. #EDFB4338#ukedchat
#ukedchat A4: one day alien words will be seen as nonsense. What do you mean they are nonsense words? Why do we spend hours practising reading them? Then penalising children for trying to make sense of them strom - storm
Definitely - we then have the issue of KS2 English results setting targets for Hist/Geog/RS when the assessment criteria don't match up (which for me has always been an issue with transition from KS2>3)
Ridiculous! Legibility is all that’s important in my opinion. It’s something we don’t focus on as much at secondary I know but the low self esteem created by having poor handwriting and it being scrutinised creates such barriers #ukedchat
A6: It's already here but virtual reality has great promise and I expect to see it go from strength to strength. We had a @Google Expeditions day at school and the pupils absolutely loved it. It was very immersive and has application across the curriculum. #UKEdChat
A6. I hope to see a lot more reader pens and voice to text technology to aid our students with Dyslexia and other barriers to accessing and producing written texts #ukedchat
Loved hearing about the made up countries the Milepost 3 children had created as part of their @The_IPC units on a School visit. What a great idea and such great #learning#edchat#ukedchat
A6 - Own devices linked in with smart voice controlled classroom based technologies. Students on there own learning paths following curriculums at their own pace. With learning platforms as the assessment model and teachers as the facilitators. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q7

A5: I'm currently doing a cpd online course all about blended learning. Human is and always will be relevant however utilising technology to enhance learning and widen experiences is the way forward #ukedchat
Interesting. Whilst we don’t pinpoint learning styles of children these days, visual and kinesthetic approaches are very much a part of practise. Teaching primary maths it’s practical then pictorial then abstract #ukedchat
In reply to
@c_sillett, @LukeCHale, @TGolightly, @ukedchat
#ukedchat A7: Interesting one... I think primary schools will for sure, but with the potential for ‘virtual classrooms’ perhaps we’ll see a change in Secondary/FE? Teachers teaching multiple classes in different locations (around the world?!)
Are they? #UKEdChat was speaking from a local perspective, but am fascinated that there is a demand in Scotland for Business Studies teachers. More innovative thinking, if supported by good and relevant curriculum 👍🏼

A7 - As learning could take place anywhere at anytime, I had a vision of students signinging in to their own personalised learning curriculums controlled by regional ‘hubs’ that could be visited for more in depth seminars led by teaching specialists. #UKEdChat
My school, and authority, actively encourage the use of own devices within a classroom setting. Some classes are even taught as a 'Virtual Campus' via online learning tools. It definitely has its merits but there are a number of downsides aswell.
A7- Yes. 99% of the time knowledge provides the foundation for other skills likely considered 'more desirable' in the future- innovating, critical thinking, evaluating, creativity etc. can't happen without that foundation which schools provide #ukedchat
#ukedchat A6: I hope more collaborative software will come into play (things like Padlet etc) for children to collaborate on learning and encourage more classroom discussion
A7: As I said in A6, blended learning may well see the traditional school building and classroom disappear however I hope, the collective element, the human gathering, doesn't. I'd hate for us all to just learn alone, via tech, at home. #ukedchat
#a7#UKEDchat Agree. I teach teens and older, so andragogy is my pedagogy; students could get more responsibility sooner; recognise their prior experience/skills; pick n mix course content (for learning) with + for them, but assess against full award
A7 #ukfechat there week always be a need for schools and 'human' learning environments as opposed to 'electronic'. Should not be either/or conversation.
#ukedchat a6: I think about this a lot! I want projected images of dinosaurs that children can walk through. Like a step on from FX guru so you’re truly immersed in it!
#ukedchat A7 schools as physical places will still exist, although independence and new technology useful, the social aspect of schooling is still important. Students still need to know how to interact and socialise professionally
#UKEdChat Q8
In any aspect of learning/education, what will always be true?
Pls use the hashtag & A8...
Bring more educators to this @UKEdChat session. Please RT😊
I guess the primary move has been away from the labeling of children or choosing certain activities to make sure you 'hit' those learning styles. Making it more a recognition that all benefit from all. #ukedchat
In reply to
@Kezmerrelda, @c_sillett, @TGolightly, @ukedchat
Ah, see we actively seek to remove this assumption from our practice. We favour dual coding, explicit instruction, interleaved curriculum etc. #ukedchat
In reply to
@Kezmerrelda, @LukeCHale, @TGolightly, @ukedchat
#ukedchat a6: would also like to project famous people from past into classroom that would talk and interact with us. We use role play live web chats - this is a step on!
Yes #UKEdChat And may need a shift in the role of a teacher to more of a facilitation position, but remain experts of pedagogy, support and signposting.
Yes I totally agree with that. All benefit from all but we still embrace various approaches, practical, hands on, visual for all. Not like I was at school when it was almost purely auditory! #ukedchat
In reply to
@LukeCHale, @c_sillett, @TGolightly, @ukedchat
Speaking anecdotally I would say so. I know of some instances in which the NQT is the only person in the department. I do think it is on the rise in Scotland at least #UKEdChat
A7. Definitely. Although I would love to see a move a way from a standard formal curriculum and schools facing the freedom to focus more on the needs of their students and teach skills that meet the needs of their communities. Very ideological I know! #ukedchat
#UKEdchat#A8 Learning means needing guidance/instruction to get going, mentoring to develop; space to make mistakes; objective advice and feedback to aid more progress
Tests annihilate opportunities to give the most knowledge deprived chn a multi-layered curriculum. I'd love to see us move to project based assessment in primary. Chn need to develop core skills through practical and meaningful application that tests their logic and creativity.
I totally disagree. Handwriting will always have its place. It’s a vital life skill and connects the human and the emotion to learning and life. Could never imagine typing a card of condolences for example. #UKEdChat
A8 - 1)pastoral care and support. 2) use of teachers to facilitate learning and subject knowledge. 3)Technology has a place to support teaching to save time, money and enable teachers to work smarter #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A8 Our innate desire to learn more about the world and universe around us. This desire will always want stoking - education needs to fill and excite that innate curiosity.
