Hi there! A bit late but I'm Natasha from Whitehall, PA!
Oh forgot to include I teach 6th grade Library & 7th grade Academic Strategies
A1: YES! Social media is where we can connect, tell out stories, celebrate successes and learn together!
I think social media is essential. I cannot use alot w/ Ss becuz of blocks but I use Twitter and FB lots to get ideas
Nan Brown Alpharetta, GA grades 6-8
A1: important part that gets overshadowed by other things. Need to be better about weaving it into my lessons & having Ss contribute
A1: absolutely!I post all kinds of info/pics & just started school Twitter acct.Need to be our own ambassadors-share the positive!
A1 It is a part of my job working with BYOD in the middle school & with weekly k-5 classes. All part of work on sharing w/community
A1 - It's important to advocate 4 your lib. You can reach Ss, Ts, Ps, Admin, and community using it. It's where the Ss r.
Right - not just for our school but our own development too! Love my !
A1--social media is foundational for helping "tell our story" in the library and school! So good to help
A1 Important, YES! Twitter has changed my library life, especially chats like !
A1 I currently in grad school for my MLS but what I notice is how social media is a great way to brand your library which is vital
A1: social media is the key to not feeling alone in my job! My supports me, inspires me, and keeps me accountable!
Agree. Chats like help reinvigorate me each month & help me establish great collaborative friends
Also I wouldn't have been able to start my makersp without Twitter
A1: Social media is vital for my own PD, but not as big for my library. Want to change that.
wish we had BYOD in our K-6 school. So many opportunities!
A1: v. Important. I connect w/ colleagues from around the world, as well as publishers, authors, & Prof organizations. Easy & Fun PD
I hadn't really thought it using it for new ideas! Love this.
A1. DIfficult to navigate sometimes with changing district rules and filters. Privacy concerns vs positive exposure
A1: I do think it's my responsibility to "tell my story" of the great things that are happening in the library on my campus.
A1 Of course most of my kids are under 13, so we start with F2F social interaction and weave in online stuff as they grow
A1: Social media is important to me in my job. Finding new ideas and sharing ideas.
So happy you are doing this with the kids. Sharing is so important.
A1: yes! I think social media is important for connecting with our students and staying up to date on trends
A1: I agree! I think that social media and being connected allows me to do my job better!
Me too...want to focus on this more.
I learn so much from Twitter posts. I get ideas and links that I would never have found on my own that I can then share back out
agreed! Trying to encourage my Ts to use more - relevance is key!
Hi . Better late than never! School librarian from Perth, Western Australia, here.
A1 my school has just allowed us this year to share on Social Media using the school's name. along with a 4 page SM policy paper
I would love to change that too. If only I could change admin's mind https://t.co/bxNQygZorC
A1: Social media is vital for my own PD, but not as big for my library. Want to change that.
YES! https://t.co/VTT3RnVi88
A1: yes! I think social media is important for connecting with our students and staying up to date on trends
Social media () changed my career as a TL. If you see it as something "extra", you're doing it wrong. It's PIVOTAL!
I agree! I find Twitter chats so energizing!
So glad to finally get the admin team onboard with letting me into Middle School classrooms.
me too! I have so many bookmarks waiting to be filed on my Pinterest just from things I found here.
What are some of your ideas for branding, by the way? Just curious since I've only seen a few examples.
Perfect way to lead into the online world. Teaching rather than banning will keep our kids safer in the long run.
yes! As the "only one" in the building it is so nice to connect online and not feel alone
yes! Ss love seeing the connections with authors - so many on Twitter!
A1 Social media is something I want to do better. Def try to share the positive and encourage Ts to do so too
So happy you are here all the way from Australia!
I have similar problem w/ district worried negative things are being said so very reserved about social media. Sad!
Right?! So many of us are an island unto ourselves. We have to have each others backs : )
A1 love my PLN, but also am able to communicate with school/parent community about the great stuff our kids are doing Very nice
This is A1 in a nutshell! From many of us on east cost US to PERTH AUSTRALIA! Love Twitter!! :) https://t.co/mwHYL7Ema2
Hi . Better late than never! School librarian from Perth, Western Australia, here.
A1 I make social media part of my job & my students help with it, too through our Teen Library Council (Shannon from MO)
definitely.tweeted msgs to authors about how Ss loved a book and they always respond. Ss love seeing the responses!
Would love to pick your brain on how you brought admin around!
A1 Can't imagine doing my job w/o Pinterest and Twitter. Least time consuming...my poor abandonded blogs
I've only got like 30 food boards. The other 20 are various fandoms. Excited 2develop my library boards
Exactly! So much this! https://t.co/7iTmZuq2nd
I learn so much from Twitter posts. I get ideas and links that I would never have found on my own that I can then share back out
took me a while to make it start to happen. Keep trying!
Love seeing the look on the kids faces when they get a response from an author! Coolest thing ever!
welcome!! You literally proved my answer to Q1 by being here 🙂🙂
There was some parent concern about SM and I had been banging at the door for a while. I'll take what I can get
Hiya Gaby from IL popping in during kids' bathtime
lol! I leave every twitter chat with a bunch of tabs open to explore!
just a request if responding to my tweets could u please use
I know when I read something on twitter I then send it to a teacher who I think might like it. Connections everywhere!
joining from Tacoma, WA where I'm an admin in Inst Tech w/. Happy to be here!
I'm always amazed & excited when authors respond to my Tweets! https://t.co/CQw2DQFsjS
yes! Ss love seeing the connections with authors - so many on Twitter!
A2: Unfortunately SM blocked in my district but kids use VPNs and/or their own data plan. Should really teach..not block
I know! I remember writing ltrs to the publishers hoping an author would see it, much less respond!
Nope! Luckily I'm encouraged to have a Twitter presence
A2: fortunate to have a district embracing social media...open for all staff. Tiered filtering so not open for Ss.
A1 social media is necessary to showcase what's up in my space for admin & community plus my personal pln + battery recharge
Oh yes, whenever I share with my tech dept they know I've been on Twitter or Pinterest
A2: Yes they are all blocked. And none of my educators use Twitter! Breaks my heart!
A2: My school allows social media for the faculty/staff, but it is blocked for the kids (PreK 3 - 8th grade)
A2: Almost nothing is blocked social media wise for teachers. Most social media is blocked for students.
Awesome! Please jump into the conversation. Talking Social Media & the school library tonight
A1 - Our TLs use Yammer (Soc media w/) as their primary platform for daily collaboration across 50+ schls.
That's a big part of how we do author/illustrator studies. Getting answers from the source on twitter
PTA has Facebook page - can be used to communicate at times. Backs of heads don't show enthusiasm, lol
I'm fortunate to be in a district that doesn't block Twitter or FB or many other social media sites. It's been gr8 4 communication
They are missing so much and the kids miss out on authentic learning connections :(
A2 Facebook is blocked because principal doesn't like the drama. Twitter is open & Instagram. We have library accounts for both
me too! I tag as many ppl as possible!
A2: Blocked for Ss & Ts if using district computers. Don't know of any Ts who use social media as a teaching tool.
A2: We're blocked! Highly discouraged to be on FB/Insta during the day. Filtered, monitored :( Twitter unaccessible on T comps even
A2: Blocked for Ss, not teachers. Have to choose how best to use SM under those parameters.
A2 vine is 🚫. I use Twitter daily. Using it for ; kinder last week defined trolls when we discussed kind online comments!
lol! Exactly! starstruck. Biggest thrill being followed by now-author -loved him since Rent!
We are so glad you could make it. We are only on Q2 so jump on in!
A2: I fear we aren't doing enough to teach Ss appropriate dig cit when social media is blocked!
A2:access to twitter but nothing else. I started a school wide insta & Facebook to showcase what's going on in school & library
To my surprise I don't know anyone in my school who uses twitter
A2: SM is blocked for Ss, but not the teachers. We have a Facebook page for school wide info and that's it!
This is really the best. Ss & Ts are starstruck https://t.co/PeWPmeTNy3
Love seeing the look on the kids faces when they get a response from an author! Coolest thing ever!
WOW! is gorgeous...oh...and talented! LOL!
That's awesome@ https://t.co/fBEVep2I9f
That's a big part of how we do author/illustrator studies. Getting answers from the source on twitter
I did a social media survey of my MS Ss- said only grown-ups are on FB & Twitter. Ss ❤️SnapChat but it's blocked!
Also late. Mind if I hang? I'm not a T or L. Work for WeVideo and trying to learn a bit more about our k12 users
A2: My school embraces it. In a PK - 2nd grade building so it is limiting by the age of the students, but encouraged for staff
is a great example of how social media can be used for connections and authentic learning!
A2- Soc media isn't blocked, but we do have guidelines re: social media and 3rd party apps. We also have Lync & Yammer internally.
Awesome idea! Will share w/ my 5th gr T who does author study - and get her on Twitter!
I know. at a conf right now with my principal and was trying to tell him bout Twitter again. Deaf ears!
I literally told everyone I knew... :)
A2 Just recently had SM opened up on our network - for all. Being an independent school has advantages
yep!! exactly how I get on during the day too! Wish we were more open to teaching them (ahem, ironically)
I see the same, so have to be purposeful about how to use my time/effort w SM
Thanks, ! Great topic! Powerful tools & lots of considerations when creating guidelines...
Super important to have guidelines!
A2 Social media is open- A few Ts, +Coaches + Admin & Clubs use Twitter primarily to communicate school news and as networking tool.
Yes! I have actually even had skyped visits all because of tweets!
I'm so surprised how many schools block! But then I do see a lot of Ts who post student work and S in action. Which always inspires
Even after I've been nudging (pushing!) it's a very small amt at my school too :(
A2 Moving target on filters and blocks. Students circumvent with phones. Clown hysteria shows dig cit deficit in application
HI! 👋🏻 super nice to see you here first introduced me to & I'm excited to use it!
For so many tools & technologies it comes down to implementation/rollout...
No time to figure out Snapchat with my library.
A2: I had students help me pick out hashtags to use for the library for the year. We use
My goal this year is to use social media in my library especially author chats..
That's so true. It's why we advocate for teaching over blocking but both have pros & cons
Baby steps. Love it when teachers share student learning
Yes, it's a challenge to get fellow district Ls to join Twitter! What amazing opportunities it provides! https://t.co/5aUwP7LDlc
To my surprise I don't know anyone in my school who uses twitter
A2 We have a marketing & development team who are great with SM and are good allies for our library
I do this all on my phone so only the app is open for now 😹😹
last year we connected with authors across the country...impossible without Twitter!
Brilliant way for Ss to take ownership! Think I'll steal this idea :)
I work for an independent private school so social media is part of how they network too!
A2: FB & Twitter are open for Ts & Ss. Many Ts use it to showcase what is happening in classroom. Ss faces are not shown or blurred.
I'm on tweetdeck and still minutes behind - don't know how you do this on your phone! :)
yay! That gives me great hope & motivation to continue to build my twitter presence
A2 Seesaw is one way around the SM filter issue, but still learning how to use it
A2: Our school has a Facebook page, but most are blocked for students during school which is a shame since kids love social media
Everything I post about library happenings is on my personal account. Creating library Twitter is causing some anxiety in others.
Snapchat and Mine love Instagram too! I've thought about creating a for my Ss.
so far this is this is the most confusing one lol 😹😹 gonna look into tweetdeck
Is your marketing team made up of TLs or ppl from your district Communications Department?
And being chair of the tech department has allowed me to be a voice for modeling using SM for the powers of good
that's exactly the answer I get. Don't know until you try!
I feel truly old when I can't figure out that app. 🙀
A3: could study trends to understand how SM has a data backbone. Data competency.
lol! Love the excitement of a fast paced chat but I'm a good 2 min behind in the feed.missed Q2 completely!
A3: would love to have Ss review books on Twitter and ask for recommendations. does this & it's awesome!
We are a private school with actual professional marketing people to promote our school to families. No disctrict!
The experience came full circle for the students involved in the project too! Too prefect!
A2--fortunate our district has an "opt-out" policy for sharing students/work so I can post student work and learning !
A3: haven't had a lot of experience with it yet but hoping to engage students using & some other similar setups
Don't worry! We'll Storify it so you can refer back.
A3: Connect w/experts, look 4 collaborative opportunities beyond 140 characters, Tweet w/authors, 140 char poems, etc
A3 SO many ideas from Twitter, love to share the RTs w my Young Mkers Club!
A3Late to conversation - my goal is to get Instagram for library - selling new books & activities in media center - be where ss r
Mine too! We are encouraged to share!
A3. Innovative teacher would like to set up Skype Classroom sharing experience. P said get parent perm for each S. Best practice?
Think about Twitter chats between characters of a book - what would they say to each other? How to do it with chrctr restraints
A3: Want students to give book recommendations using Instagram. Planned on using it during banned book week. More involved next yr
I know what you mean about moving target so frustrating! https://t.co/TQZKY3LLY9
A2 Moving target on filters and blocks. Students circumvent with phones. Clown hysteria shows dig cit deficit in application
Ahh thx! It might be cool to have a Marketing Committee of TLs & folks from the Communications Office, though
A3: slow chat on a topic. Somewhere between synchronous and asynchronous
A3: Not enough space to answer! But *Connects Are Essential!* SM has led to relationships for me, = collab beyond our district
A3: audience for writing, finding expert answers, class global connections
oops haha I am just following the hashtag in the search feature of twitter. Seems to mostly work well.
What is ? I haven't heard that term before.
A3- There's such power in bringing in "expert" voice from around the world
my friend does this with GREAT success. I'm hoping to do this in my library too!
I've done that from my phone. Now interrupted by child w/ HW problems...
A3: I've had Ss write Twitter posts about their novels but unfortunately not irl. Not sure how to change this at a district level
Great idea! I might steal it! LOL!
Love the Makerspace ideas I get on Twitter and Pinterest
A3: I showcase a book of the week on Instagram. That is usually the first book checked out on Monday's. It's like a mini booktalk
I love sending Tweets to vendors and companies that show us using their products- then I show Ss their responses.
it's like education perfection 💖💖
Love this idea! There's some basic programming that can be done from a Data Science perspective to analyze trends in SM
A3 Author interaction + spreading enthusiasm for books via 6-word book recs, book rec blog, selfies on instagram
wordnerd153 katsok my friend MrsJennKelly22 does this with GREAT success. I'm hoping to do this in my library too!
A3 with our mock caldecott in 2nd-3rd grade I use my twitter to share results and we often hear back from illustrators
I really need a list of authors who tweet. Told my Ss I would have one and haven't produced! https://t.co/P24zrOgd0s
I'm usually jumping up and down when one even likes my post let alone getting a response. 😊😊
A3: My great ideas are not my own, but those I have discovered through social media!
Think about a "paper chat" where kids actually write out tweets on paper - low tech SM but still reqs HOTS
A3: I love sending Tweets to vendors and companies showing us using their products at school- then I show Ss how they respond!
I'm going to have to tweet out the results from my school this year. I never even thought about that.
I have an Instagram for my classroom and Ss love it! Great place to share Ss work and they feel apart of a community
and my students get SO EXCITED when someone responds to our Q. Shows their learning is valued.
A3 we need to model the proper way to use the social media too - so many lesson possibilities
A3 other have said, but having an author respond to a Ss tweet is powerful! Even I get excited when I get a reply/like!
I know some TLs who have Ss create Pinterest boards of book recs and diff genres, then link to library website.
Yes! & do this. Vendors want to hear from us & our students
Was doing this to show parents and was pleasantly surprised when we got likes and retweets
This is true for me as well! I take ideas & tweek them just a little bit. https://t.co/VgzogJCyUG
A3: My great ideas are not my own, but those I have discovered through social media!
basically have S's imagine twitter convos bran characters of books to demonstrate understanding
Great idea! https://t.co/rcrJDoFUuE
I know some TLs who have Ss create Pinterest boards of book recs and diff genres, then link to library website.
just saw a site to create text messages for this but looked spammy. Must be others out there.
That really is the best! They feel like what they had to say mattered! Importance of having an audience
I've started saving screen shots of author replies to my Tweets to share excitedly w Ss! https://t.co/xcQFALiVs5
I really need a list of authors who tweet. Told my Ss I would have one and haven't produced! https://t.co/P24zrOgd0s
I'm usually jumping up and down when one even likes my post let alone getting a response. 😊😊
what a cute idea!! Gonna have to steal, https://t.co/xW3EAMOjPO
A3: I showcase a book of the week on Instagram. That is usually the first book checked out on Monday's. It's like a mini booktalk
A3: Last year we Tweeted clips of a high school S reading to younger Ss via - then other schools Tweeted wanting her to read!
Absolutely - we have to model what we expect for Ss and Ts
that will be me in a few years. Mine is currently sleeping 👍🏻
WHAT?! I absolutely love this idea! https://t.co/kGbNXb6ryb
A3: I showcase a book of the week on Instagram. That is usually the first book checked out on Monday's. It's like a mini booktalk
Yes - THIS. My daughter's school equates SM with stranger danger.
love this idea! Going to do with my book club groups!
Bad mom - can't help, I'm on a twitter chat! lol (I did help, btw...)
https://t.co/2YKDi25r0I
A3: Last year we Tweeted clips of a high school S reading to younger Ss via - then other schools Tweeted wanting her to read!
Very true! Show the positive power of social media!
It is not that hard to manage, especially through the app! Easily toggle between. I hope more Ps will follow.
do you let the students post to the timeline like a waiting/hold list?
great idea! Haven't started w/ IG - not sure what I'd post vs Twitter but love this!
Aww! I'm so happy for you and your kids! I can feel the joy from here!
Teaching digital citizenship to kids is the key!
That's a great idea and something I can share with the English teacher as well!
great opportunities for the librarian to lead the way with modeling & hosting times to share with parents!
Yes, but hard to teach if it is blocked... :(
I just started finding them thru my faves.
We have to equip educators, students, & families w/knowledge re: social media so they can be empowered
With little Ss we mimic SM tools- put "like" bookmarks in books on the shelf, compose tweets on paper, PicCollage for instagram, etc
Exactly! Modeling proper usage is key.
when I grow up I want to be like & 💪💪💪
A3: I tweet to authors, connect in GHO or Skype sessions, and share what Ss are doing on - library twitter account
That would be a GREAT list to post here!
So I don't say "digital" citizenship. We talk about being kind and responsible in RL and online
I had a great exchange with about Ss using Post-its for close reading! They quoted the book, & Ss were so impressed!
Love it! Totally using it!
Done this too - great way to show connections!
Use fb, IG and Twitter.. IG is blocked in district so I use my cellphone
Love this!!! https://t.co/Cy0MLefI7l
I had a great exchange with about Ss using Post-its for close reading! They quoted the book, & Ss were so impressed!
Well yes. Need to get over that hurdle first. LOL!
so true! Growing up is no fun!!
Exactly! Being a responsible, ethical person doesn't change in the physical or digital world
duh- why didn't I ever think to do that?! I will now.
I know many T's loved using it on Moodle a few years ago when I first heard of it
Ooooh, I never thought about tagging companies like that - great idea for me to borrow
That's fine. Not important what you call it.
Using padlet and Kidblog for
PLN power! 🙌 https://t.co/OHv1S7OIDh
A3: My great ideas are not my own, but those I have discovered through social media!
Yes! What does it mean to be "safe" physically, social-emotionally, AND intellectually?
are all great ones to follow also
love the "like" bookmarks! may have to steal!
I know teachers of "littles" (K-3) who let kids take pics, write tweets but Tchr reviews b4 they hit send
Oh, our new tech teacher hooked me up with - love it! That is my new shiny toy for modeling social media
A3 I've had generous authors share PDF previews of books (Ss reviewed!), sent signed books!! & gave encouragement. All so awesome
Kids absolutely love using & seeing what their peers have said. Try using to connect globally!
Hi I'm Leah academic librarian moving to school librarianship located on Oahu
A3: I never knew about or days before Twitter!
Love Padlet. Great tool for collaborative proj.
Kids loved putting them in books - I probably have a pic in twitter somewhere...
WOW! I love that all it really takes is having the courage to reach out and ask : )
I've seen it! I love seeing your posts! Hope you don't mind I use it as a model 4my new library
I love that too! are fantastic to connect! https://t.co/IeZbP3Cfy5
A3: I love sending Tweets to vendors and companies showing us using their products at school- then I show Ss how they respond!
phew! caught up - although I somehow TOTALLY missed Q4 - can't find it in my feed. (eye roll)
And kids don't need an account, but is acts like social media enough to make them happy
Which is why I adore you!
This! If things are blocked how can we model to our Ss? https://t.co/2KoEVpOb7K
A3 we need to model the proper way to use the social media too - so many lesson possibilities
, you will also love ! https://t.co/0UwFwMNYXs
Oh, our new tech teacher hooked me up with - love it! That is my new shiny toy for modeling social media
peeps, are you using to follow? Just discovered it using another chat--so easy!
dang where did q4 get to?? Knew I would lose track eventually lol
I learned about Global Maker Day because of Twitter. Launching our new Makerspace on that day
Exactly. You can start there talking about what is & is not appropriate to post
Used for a K - 12 summer reading challenge! Great for all ages to participate
me too! Look up at the TV for a bit of football and I missed a whole Q!
that's all it is! Being positive, promoting , and occasionally they see! reward goes to my kiddos!
my twitter here is one of the most supportive groups I've ever encountered.
Padlet great for sharing student work with parents - virtual class visit!
I watch & 4 collaborative opportunities
Q5: What is the biggest barrier to getting educators in your school excited about using social media? https://t.co/gLN2lCVJ1A
OMG - how did I miss Q4? I thought I was keeping up this time
so it wasn't just me! Can someone RT Q4 just to satisfy our curiosity? Ty!
A4: My Ts don't see the benefit. They haven't found their people like we have here with .
A4: Organize? Is that a thing? I Pin things and bookmark sites.
Q5: google survey responses said "time" - Ts think twitter will be a time sponge - don't see the benefits w/o trying it!
A5: "I don't have the time" - #1 excuse! We're all busy! Some don't see that it's worth it when it makes you better for your Ss.
Q4 they are scared to learn something new & of backlash I think
Hope it didn't get stuck in the pipeline! I have all of these timed to go out so I can concentrate on the conversation.
A4: biggest barrier is time. Ts say they don't have the time
A4: I set up so my fav tweets get saved there. Go through on Sat morning with a pot of tea:)
A5--I think until staff have a personal success they don't truly understand power of social media. They need one idea, connection...
A4 well nothing perfect yet. But Pinterest & my reading list on safari
Q4: I am always trying to tell ts. Even put it end of my signature in emails.
A5: I have made a few co-admins on pages but most still don't help. The students are the most excited to interact
me too... WAAAAAY too many bookmarks...
A5: biggest barrier is time. Ts say they don't hVe the time
A5: From what I see using social media is just one more thing for Ts to learn and spend time on unfortunately it's seen too much
A4: Organization is key! Pinterest, bookmarks, and folders!
A5: Getting them where they aren't afraid to try it in the classroom...
A5-d/n have knowledge of how/why to use. Try: Engage -> Equip -> Empower Ts, Admin, Ss, Ps re: intellectual safety & soc media
looks like it just got hung up somewhere haha
So true I am what I am because of how the community works together 2 lift up & support each other
So true I am what I am because of how the community works together 2 lift up & support each other
A5b: ...And getting them to see its relevance to Ss & edu
A4: Great Q! I need a good solution for this. I like Pinterest for this but still not organized enough. Looking for good ideas!
I need bookmarks for my bookmarks hahaha
Dipping out early - thank you for a great night & growing my ! See you soon - YAY!
A5: Time is what I hear as the biggest challenge. They have to see the value befoe they can invest the time.
Jumping into a bit late. Great topic. In my experience social media is accepted when concrete examples/references are cited
Q4: I used to email favorite Tweets to myself - you can set up Google to pull Tweets for you and store them in Drive.
A5: don't see how it applies to classroom instruction. How chats are beneficial
A4 - I have too many ways - email the important links so can put in folders, feedly for blogs- pocket to save so I can read later,
A3: Modelling good use of sm is important. Digital citizenship lessons too https://t.co/WMfSqWcapi
Q3: How have/could you leveraged social media to create authentic learning opportunities for students in your libr… https://t.co/3pm2ixHP9Q
A4 I take LOTS of screen shots & save LOTS of pics, also keep notes on topics i.e. Twitter, reading, libraries
A5: I think that most just don't want to take the time to learn it. They don't see it being beneficial.
A5: Time - I'm a mama along w/ job. I try to organize, but things get lost in my craziness.
A5: I try to use hashtags relevant to my teachers to start est connections & hope they take! LOL! https://t.co/vBM9I6OZEX
not familiar with that - will def check it out!
A4: I tend to bookmark resources using Diigo. Great for organization as well as sharing.
