Hi everyone, I am Adam Llevo; Currently based in the UK and a lecturer of PriPE and SecPE along with being a workshop presenter. Also co-mod of #whatisschool for this evening. Please introduce yourself, your location & role #whatisschool
Kevin here a Teaching Principal with Irelands first and only Primary School STEAM Room.I announced my retirement last week after 32 years as a Teaching Principal #whatisschool
A1: ability and confidence to participate in a variety of physical activities both low intensity and high intensity in a variety of environments (inside and outside). #whatisschool
A1: The Dictionary Definition is: the ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person #whatisschool
A1: To me, physically literate would mean one is versed in aspects of keeping physically fit, and being healthy. (Something I need to work on!) #whatisschool
A1) not sure, health is a combination of physical and emotional literacy and action towards it. So can I say physically literate means knowing ways to keep physical body fit? #whatisschool
A1: The Ss who rides his bike down the slide when no one is looking. My buddy who struggle to read but could make 1800 wood joints and create a cabinet that would last 100's of years. #whatisschool
A1- To me physically literate means that you have good control of your gross and fine motor skills and know how outside stimuli (or lack there of) influences your body. #whatisschool
Parent in Connecticut USA joining #WhatIsSchool for a bit. Feared PE growing up. Many PE teachers are changing the experience and I’m grateful. #WhatIsSchool
Curious how much ability should play into it. I had and have lousy motor skills (particularly fine). Isn’t it more about physical fitness of any kind? #WhatIsSchool
A1- To me physically literate means that you have good control of your gross and fine motor skills and know how outside stimuli (or lack there of) influences your body. #whatisschool
I think the social domain is key...building relationships, teamwork, collaboration, communication are all important - it is more than what you can do on your own - how can you contribute + to your team? #whatisschool
Haha! Not sure! My Daughter gets written PE homework sometimes on top of math, science, humanities, language homework’s and we hate it for sure #ditchhomework#whatisschool
A1: understanding skills and concepts behind a certain task. Being able to move your body in a way that will help you achieve the task, and also being able to think head (move to space etc) #whatisschool
I think the social domain is key...building relationships, teamwork, collaboration, communication are all important - it is more than what you can do on your own - how can you contribute + to your team? #whatisschool
A2: They inspire me on a personal level to lead a more healthy and active lifestyle. My school has a gym for staff members as well as various workout sessions, mostly led by our PE staff before and after school. #whatisschool
I would think the "literate" part means that you can speak the lingo, and understand the lingo as well (What we in ELA would call a "tier 3" words - domain specific..), am I close? #whatisschool
A2: They are active learners and active sharers - PE teachers in my experience do their best to promote the fun in schools - we need more of this #whatisschool
I never skipped class, but if I had it would’ve been gym... Maybe that had something to do with it. 🙄 But seriously, I’m grateful for this discussion.
And sorry to say I’m just here till daughter’s ballet class gets out at the bottom of the hour. #WhatIsSchool
A2: Our first one, my friend Mark, fitness freak (in a good way), and our sensory integration specialist. Talk about a spectrum of assistance. #whatisschool
A2: I know they get to wear much more comfortable clothing than the rest of us! (I'll have to ask my PE teacher colleagues to see if they can do what they do in heels one day...) :) I wish I could find ways to combine PE and ELA! #whatisschool
A2: Their energy, commitment to bringing out another area of learning in our children, their passion, developing a healthy mind through the physical and great ideas/activities for team building for all faculty. #whatisschool
A2 Our PE teachers go above and beyond for our students. They host students during study hall periods so that they have an extra gym period every once in a while. They also do a "color wars" at the end of the school year which kids love. #whatisschool#sbpdchat
A3: PE assessment is getting more and more diverse - integrating technology can make assessment in all subjects more authentic, purposeful and efficient #whatisschool
In 7th grade I got gym homework that I remember as sports trivia. (And the learning goal of that is...?) I had no interest in sports and knew nothing. Recall my uncle answering most of the questions for me and still not handing it in. 🙄 #WhatIsSchool
Just this week, my 6th grade students had to run a mile in hot humid weather, right before they came to my class for an 80 minute ELA period. They stunk, but I was so proud of them for completing that assessment! #whatisschool
A2: coaching students in sport is one of the best ways to get to know your students and build rapport. PE teachers get the most opportunities for these priceless moments #whatisschool
A3: While we are an IB school, we still have some standardized assessments mixed in with some excellent and authentic formative and summative assessments #whatisschool
A3: assessment through learning goals and success criteria - use tech to record skills as well as to have Ss reflect on their growth and next steps. #whatisschool
A3: @Seesaw is a great tool to ask specific questions that target skill knowledge and address specific standards, while allowing for student reflection #whatisschool
A3: We are starting to use lots of different apps for the kids to use as a tool to show their understanding. @Flipgrid is a beauty, but even good old #imovies and @PicCollage are great. Even using the slow mo function on camera to show kids throwing action.. #whatisschool
Going to throw a quick response in as a HPE teacher. A great HPE program and teacher thinks about the holistic approach to teaching. Exercise is universally shown to improve mood, increase energy and provide incredible social benefits. Also, kids need to move! #WhatIsSchool
A4: definitely! I read the research as well as conducting my own research - I have a 3-5 year plan of the studies I want to conduct and get published. #whatisschool
A2: #whatisschool in the #physed world there is always a great discussion about this...@SchleiderJustin prefers the term brain boost as exercise boosts learning rather than breaking it
I have to go but just want to say that this is the part that sounds really valuable to me—setting them up for a lifelong habit of monitoring their health and fitness. I’d be in much better shape now if I’d had this! Want to find out what my kids’ schools are doing. #WhatIsSchool
A3: assessment through learning goals and success criteria - use tech to record skills as well as to have Ss reflect on their growth and next steps. #whatisschool
A4 - Besides lots of reading and providing PD, I think that speaking with students about what they like is huge. The various opportunities for PE activities are endless. What we can’t do is force every kid into the same small circle of skill based learning. #WhatIsSchool
A4 This summer we will talk again about assessments and review our practices. Need a whole-school shift from traditional assessment practices to that related to career and lifelong learning. #whatisschool
A4: Yes - all the time - data driven learning is crucial in today's day and age. Although there is nothing better than having your nose in it & learning from the best in classrooms #whatisschool
As much as I do love data, sometimes I feel like we spend too much time analyzing numbers and not watching the smiles on the faces of our students. In the end, PE must be enjoyable for lifelong habits to occur. Doing 10 push-ups won’t inspire a kid if they hate it. #WhatIsSchool
A4: Everything I learn directly impacts decision making at my school - our whole new model is based on our new learning as a team & is BEST practice #whatisschool
A4 yes I absolutely try to. It is always changing though and so we are all always learning, right?! Which is awesome. I feel like every time I learn something new and try it I want to learn something else! #whatisschool#sbpdchat
A5 - Conferences, PD, journals, watching others and mostly tons of reflection with students. If we ask students to be risk takers, we must also move away from a fixed mindset of teaching. PE should rarely look exactly the same every single day. #WhatIsSchool
A2) I admire PE teachers and their level of energy, plus in our school we’re lucky to get many activities that they offer after school such as get-fit program or yoga. #whatisschool
A5: Twitter helps me for FREE and targetted learning opportunities with people that support me and drive me to be better each and every day #whatisschool
A5: we don’t do to much PD that’s linked to physical education but we do have a great EdTech department who are always willing to educate us. As for me my PD will start in July when I start post grad on athlete lead coaching and coaching athletes with disabilities. #whatisschool
A3 digging into @JoeyFeith thephysicaleducator website on this and @TerriDrain podcast, love the strategies suggested and the descriptive feedback #whatisschool
A4. Teachers should always be in constant research as education is in a process of change! I love twitter and social media and what it has to offer but still put first scientific magazines and educational publications for my own research and future PhD #whatisschool
A5 #whatisschool support is important but also to question is as equally important...to refine practice as educators we must be open to feedback :D (not aimed at you!! :)....talking in general)
A5: We do some observation of one another. I spent some time with my PE HoD and learned lots. Enough that I used some of it in my class. Just little things like the way he taught concepts. And then reinforced them. We can all learn from one another! #whatisschool
PE is one of the few school activities that has the ability if done correctly to truly enhance the mind, body and social skills of many students. #whatisschool
A5: #whatisschool....totally agree....worked in one establishment where we had to do 2 peer obs a year and they couldn't be from the same subject and you could only pick out +ve things from the obs.
Going to throw a quick response in as a HPE teacher. A great HPE program and teacher thinks about the holistic approach to teaching. Exercise is universally shown to improve mood, increase energy and provide incredible social benefits. Also, kids need to move! #WhatIsSchool
Twitter, learning communities, casual chats with department colleagues (can be actually a huge PD), TeachMeet events offer so many good ideas to grow as an educator, but specific PD opportunities about 21st C language teaching were very inspiring for me in the past #whatisschool
#whatisschool I attended @learning2 twice! The ignite talks are So inspiring, loved unconference sessions , met so many passionate innovative teachers in person that have been following on Twitter
A6: If money was no object I would spend it on people - give people better pay, less contact time, more professional learning opportunities and more staff to make a greater impact on student learning because PEOPLE is what matters in schools #whatisschool
More highly qualified and experienced #physed Ts and more young, energetic and creative newly trained #physed Ts. Great teaching has largest impact on S learning - if money was no object keep hiring and training amazing Ts. #whatisschool
I was greatly surprised seeing some students reflections in Seesaw, when they know their audience will be real their potential grows so much! #whatisschool
A6 - State of the art fitness center, spins bikes, rowers, hiking trails, indoor track, Olympic pool, rock wall, anything that will inspire a love of movement. #whatisschool
A6: More highly qualified and experienced #physed Ts and more young, energetic and creative newly trained #physed Ts. Great teaching has largest impact on S learning - if money was no object keep hiring and training amazing Ts. #whatisschool
Bummed I missed this chat! If you want to follow some amazing HPE teachers check out @CoachRussellHPE and @AdamHPE the work they do at #AISGZ is the best HPE Program I've seen! #whatisschool
I’ve been researching systems thinking & teacher leadership. If the system doesn’t change to support creativity/innovation, my practice can only improve so much. By understanding how schools work, I improve both efficacy and efficiency in my department and beyond. #whatisschool
A6: interesting question. You can have all the whizz, bong and bounce, but if you don’t have clear purpose, the pedagogy, then is it value for money? Which comes first the environment to create the learning or the pedagogy? #whatisschool
A6: if money was no object I’d spend it on more productive PD for physical Education (and home room) teachers. A lot of people moan at the thought of PD because it generally boring. This wouldn’t be the case if PD was fun and relevant. #whatisschool
Twitter. I find more progressive and innovative ideas here than at a conference. Also, re-reading The Sabertooth Curriculum one in a while to question what I’m teaching, how, and why. #whatisschool
A6: I don’t think I’d use the money for a tool or program necessarily. I’d hire more teachers and bring in a more frequent co teaching model so that the teacher to student ration is less and we can focus more on targeting specific needs in small group settings #WhatIsSchool
A6. More teachers to be able to create more content and differentiated assessment & to reduce the work load. One specific PD opportunity per year directly linked to the area of interest and research of every teacher. #whatisschool
