  • TNording Apr 20 @ 9:11 PM EDT
    Hello, Tina here! #sstlap
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1 Clearly Ts. MC tests require no thought, or at least no need to present evidence of thought. #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1) There are good MC questions out there that require higher level thinking but they are hard to write. Easier to grade for Ts. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:11 PM EDT
was always better for me - easy to grade- quick feedback- not really good measure of ss knowledge depth anyway-but can be formative #sstlap
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1 If one needs to give MC tests, then s/he should require students to write justification for answer to each question. #sstlap
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1: teachers because it makes grading idiot-proof but not a true repres. of what sts know. You could totally guess on every ?#sstlap
  • flipping_A_tchr Apr 20 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1 neither really! Students don't really learn from them and tchrs must develop good distractor items -- what did kids really learn? #sstlap
  • Ryan7Read Apr 20 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1: I have used @kahoot Gforms and @quizizz so to me it was the quick feedback and assessment. #sstlap
  • book_techjunkie Apr 20 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1 Depends on what the goal of it is. Student quick understanding and able to eliminate wrong choices. Quick checks good for both #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1a) A benefit to Ss, such that it is, is that it gives them practice for state assessments. Ugh. #sstlap
  • EduGladiators Apr 20 @ 9:14 PM EDT
    🔥#EduGladiators is BACK this SATURDAY! Is failure a choice?🤔Don't miss convo! #moreedu #forsythchat #sstlap #ChristianEducators #G2great

I suggested my gifted/divergent creative brains do that anyways because often their logic made sense so I counted their A right #sstlap
    • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1 If one needs to give MC tests, then s/he should require students to write justification for answer to each question. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:14 PM EDT
good point- only thing I could find positive is quick formative check - but not summative measure of depth of knowledge #sstlap
    • flipping_A_tchr Apr 20 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1 neither really! Students don't really learn from them and tchrs must develop good distractor items -- what did kids really learn? #sstlap
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:14 PM EDT
I thought that with Common Core assessments, this was no longer true. #sstlap
    In reply to @CHitch94
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:15 PM EDT
I think there is more writing expected and allegedly deeper thinking required but there are still MC ?s. Open to being corrected. #sstlap
    In reply to @classroomtools
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:15 PM EDT
I like the point of immediate feedback- that is true and your first point used correctly- #sstlap
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:15 PM EDT
And it's a benefit for those kids that hate to write! #sstlap
    • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1a) A benefit to Ss, such that it is, is that it gives them practice for state assessments. Ugh. #sstlap
  • flipping_A_tchr Apr 20 @ 9:16 PM EDT

  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:16 PM EDT
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Uggh is right- where is the dislike button- sad but true we have to prepare students for that type of test #sstlap
    • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1a) A benefit to Ss, such that it is, is that it gives them practice for state assessments. Ugh. #sstlap
  • MrStricklin Apr 20 @ 9:16 PM EDT

Matt from MO., 7th grade Am. Hist. jumping in late for a bit. #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2) More work for T but great for Ss. In real life, do you really only get one chance to "learn" something? #sstlap
  • MrStricklin Apr 20 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A1-Personally feel that multiple choice tests are better for the teachers, not students. Especially when dealing with the bubbles! #sstlap
  • JoanneDuford Apr 20 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A1: I say neither. I believe it is better for the Ss to apply their knowledge & to have choice on how to show.#sstlap
  • Ryan7Read Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2: better for the Ss, they learn from their mistakes and grow as learners. #sstlap
  • TNording Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Depends if used correctly.75% of the time easier for Ts when it comes to grading. But using an LMS, Ss like to see immediate feedback #sstlap
  • MrShindorf Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A1- I think it's easier for both sides! It makes it easy for teachers but gives students more options which helps them #sstlap
  • book_techjunkie Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
So true! We get more then one chance. so why can't they? #sstlap
    In reply to @CHitch94
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
    #sstlap
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A1. Def. better for me for quick formative--did like more difficult M/C Q's when I taught dual credit. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2 - found it good for ss if I helped prep them ahead of time like any assessment we want them to do well. redos allow 4 reteaching #sstlap
  • Daniell622 Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A1)It depends on what will be covered on the test btw some people are not test takers so it can go both ways #sstlap
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2: Def students, more work for the T and I think sts should explain their thinking. 1 redo, not multiple until all have an A. #sstlap
  • flipping_A_tchr Apr 20 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2: good for both I think, perhaps better for the student to show more learning ... states allow multiple chances on driving tests! #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:19 PM EDT
great to have you join tonight- looking at topics and debating better for T or S #sstlap
    In reply to @MrStricklin
  • MrStricklin Apr 20 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2-I'm a huge believer in second chances! When u give the student a chance to study more, they prove knowledge on a higher lever! #sstlap
  • MrShindorf Apr 20 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2- I believe that is better for students because it gives students a second chance and I believe in second chances! #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:19 PM EDT
hey matt great to see you again #sstlap
    In reply to @TheShoe_CMS
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2 Definitely better for students, at least those who want to learn rather than get a grade, or have a ticket punched. #sstlap
  • JoanneDuford Apr 20 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2: I say both. Ss get to learn from mistakes, & Ts can reflect & reteach #sstlap
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A2. Think they benefit both. Is the point to show where they are? Great, mission accomplished. But, let them keep practicing #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Agree it is more work T so I would actually have them turn in early for feedback then final date for grading- eliminate many redos #sstlap
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: also if it was the majority of the students on a particular assignment we know it's prob the task or the teaching....#sstlap
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:21 PM EDT
    Thanks, Ben. #sstlap
    In reply to @Braz74
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Wonder if this has actually been carried through? When I was in OH, were supposedly transitioning to CCSS asmnts but still had MC. #sstlap
    In reply to @classroomtools
  • TNording Apr 20 @ 9:21 PM EDT
Tough call! I continue to flip flop on this issue. If I feel reteaching or more in depth explanation is needed, I allow. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:21 PM EDT
good example- and you were given multiple chances to learn to swim, walk, and many other real life skills #sstlap
  • book_techjunkie Apr 20 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2 Better for the Ss who really need to show their growth. but def. more work for Ts #sstlap (ahaha first time I used wrong hash & sent)
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:22 PM EDT
yes I remember scantron tests- now we have Google Forms, otehr tech to auto score #sstlap
    In reply to @MrStricklin
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:22 PM EDT
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:22 PM EDT
Good point. I think alternate assessments over the same skill/learning target helps. #sstlap
    In reply to @runitrunnels
  • cheffernan75 Apr 20 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2 best for everyone. We all learn at different rates. Good for parents & Ss to see success. Good for Ts for differentiate. #sstlap
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:22 PM EDT
Here are sample questions from Smarter Balanced tests. https://t.co/9afyTOFFUz #sstlap
    In reply to @CHitch94
  • book_techjunkie Apr 20 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Our tests still have some MC ?s. but there are also problem based questions and times they have to write #sstlap
    In reply to @CHitch94, @classroomtools
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:23 PM EDT
    especially with ELLs #sstlap
    In reply to @TheShoe_CMS
  • Ryan7Read Apr 20 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Have to leave early. Tyler needs to go bed. Night all. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:23 PM EDT
can be easier for ss than writing an essay, but does it demo real learning or important learning #sstlap
    In reply to @MrShindorf
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:23 PM EDT
It seems MC are a component, but not dominant. #sstlap
    In reply to @CHitch94
  • cheffernan75 Apr 20 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3 Both again! Ss learn from each other. Ts able to work with each group and offer better feedback. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:24 PM EDT
we have tools to do it quickly doesn't mean best practice- but if used for formative then can be best practice too #sstlap
    In reply to @runitrunnels, @MrStricklin
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3. Can be a nightmare or benefit for both. Have to be structured appropriately & Ss have to be taught proper roles/responsibilities #sstlap
  • TNording Apr 20 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Both. More for Ss. I just toured colleges 4 my son. Ss are in semester collaborative groups. Need to teach collaboration skills! #sstlap
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3: students for sure-it gives them a chance to use talking for good not evil and to learn life skills! #sstlap
  • cheffernan75 Apr 20 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Good point. Some kids HATE it. And their reasons are legit! #sstlap
    In reply to @TheShoe_CMS
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:25 PM EDT
agreed not all are test takers- is anyone? should anyone be good test taker or good at creating products- demo learning #sstlap
    In reply to @Daniell622
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Yes, think there are efforts to have less %age of assessments be MC ?s but still there. In IN, state tests being adjusted every yr. #sstlap
    In reply to @classroomtools
  • MrStricklin Apr 20 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3-Better for the students. Collaborative projects will prepare them for the real world and job force! #sstlap
  • JoanneDuford Apr 20 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3: Both - Ts can gain much insight from observation & guiding groups, & Ss learn content & soft skills #sstlap
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3 It depends. Ss prob need a mix of both collaborative & individual projects/assignments. College & life & employment require both. #sstlap
  • book_techjunkie Apr 20 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3 Better for the Ss. Def. more work for both. #sstlap
  • Daniell622 Apr 20 @ 9:26 PM EDT
I think there should be more than one way of testing some ones abilities #sstlap
    In reply to @Braz74
  • MrShindorf Apr 20 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A3- I think group projects make it easier for the teacher but collaborative projects help prepare the students for the future! #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A3 like many things depends on situation- if groups structured well become collaborative- for Ts harder to assess indiv knowledge #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:28 PM EDT
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:28 PM EDT
YES! Ts have to watch out for the slackers who mooch off everyone else-or the bossy mini me's who don't let anyone do anything #sstlap
    • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A3 It depends. Ss prob need a mix of both collaborative & individual projects/assignments. College & life & employment require both. #sstlap

Tyler from MI joining late (writing sub plans 🙃) APUSH, WHAP, Teacher Ed. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:28 PM EDT
yes- good points about rates of learning and differentiation-- so true #sstlap
    • cheffernan75 Apr 20 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2 best for everyone. We all learn at different rates. Good for parents & Ss to see success. Good for Ts for differentiate. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:29 PM EDT
thanks for joining- have a great night #sstlap
    In reply to @Ryan7Read
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4. Public speaking is an under-practiced skill, but it's tough. Can be too passive. I prefer small group presentations #sstlap
  • SHUedtech Apr 20 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3: Mixture of both, allows for performance grading (TS) and collaboration/communication, and team work (ss) #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Seeing so many great points- and yes these aren't absolute T or S - so great points of view tonight #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4) Great opportunities for Ss to develop communication skills but have to teach GOOD communication skills. #sstlap
  • Daniell622 Apr 20 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A2)Student redos should be acceptable because some students may have had a bad day and that can throw students off #sstlap
  • cheffernan75 Apr 20 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4 I struggle with this 1. It's better for the presenter, not necessarily for the Ss watching. Rarely are S presentations engaging #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:31 PM EDT
yes so much of life is working together- sharing responsibilities- why aren't we working on more life skills than content #sstlap
  • TNording Apr 20 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Both. But, learned gallery walks from Student teacher. I like that method better. More Ss are engaged. #sstlap
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4) The ESOL-certified me says Ts not kiddos. I think gallery walk type presentations are better. Or short book talks #sstlap
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:31 PM EDT
I agree. But, that's not a standard, learning target, or whatever that every district has. Tough to fit in the schedule. #sstlap
    In reply to @CHitch94
  • SHUedtech Apr 20 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4: Ss, though it creates elevated anxiety, it does prep for the next level! A reason I took seniors to a collegiate version #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:32 PM EDT
yes- front of class - like 3 days worth of presentations #sstlap
    • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:29 PM EDT
Do you mean where kids stand up 1 at a time and present something?
  • MrStricklin Apr 20 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4-Public speaking is HUGELY underpracticed. We must prepare our Ss for further EDU and the real world. #sstlap
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4: I know speaking and listening standards are impt but I think you should vary your pres. types #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Right but it is often cited as common set of skills that employers want. Asked HS Ss what made good pres. Got them thinking. #sstlap
    In reply to @TheShoe_CMS
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:33 PM EDT
I had ss create screen casts or voice over of their presentations then ss audience watch a few examples to then synthesize/do task #sstlap
  • Daniell622 Apr 20 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A3)Group work is best for both it shows teachers which students may need more help or understanding of a topic and students will be #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:34 PM EDT
  • MrShindorf Apr 20 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4- again I think this is easier for the teacher but I feel this is worse for the student! It is more stressful for the student! #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:35 PM EDT
yes was at a meeting tonight and discussing alternative assessments- students perform, create, draw, etc. to show mastery #sstlap
    • Daniell622 Apr 20 @ 9:26 PM EDT
I think there should be more than one way of testing some ones abilities #sstlap
      In reply to @Braz74
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:35 PM EDT
For sure, I'm with you. These are skills that should be in every class, every year. It takes a village, and all that. #sstlap
    In reply to @CHitch94
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:35 PM EDT
hey Tyler- great to see you as always #sstlap
    In reply to @SHUedtech
  • JoanneDuford Apr 20 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A4: Both on a limited basis. Ss need to learn presentation skills & share a passion Ts can learn from their Ss. #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A5) Depends on what purpose is. If S needs reinforcement & HW directly targeted to that skill & S has ability to do it, has value. #sstlap
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:36 PM EDT
It depends. If topic is engaging enough, student presentations can be riveting. In this class, all were. #sstlap https://t.co/6NvB2hsXBB
  • Daniell622 Apr 20 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A3 continue) Students will be able to see how their peers views are different from theirs and also be able to gain new information #sstlap
  • CHitch94 Apr 20 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A5a) If just busywork, then not good for T or S. #sstlap
  • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A5. Too much depends on the Ss, the content, timing. NO BUSYWORK! #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:36 PM EDT
not against public speaking but short presentations- 1-2 min - can also be topics they are experts, interested if about speak skill #sstlap
    • TheShoe_CMS Apr 20 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4. Public speaking is an under-practiced skill, but it's tough. Can be too passive. I prefer small group presentations #sstlap
  • cheffernan75 Apr 20 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A5 better for no one in too many cases. Still too many Ts w/ busy work. #sstlap
  • classroomtools Apr 20 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A5 Again, it depends on the assignment. Homework does not need to be make work. Some things are best done out of class. #sstlap
  • MrStricklin Apr 20 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A5-Gutsy subject, better for both? Beneficial for both I believe, serves as a great measuring stick! #sstlap
  • runitrunnels Apr 20 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A5: If it is meaningful and relevant and within reason then Ss bc they do need extra practice on some things, Math more so than SS #sstlap
  • cheffernan75 Apr 20 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A5 But... if it is the right assignment that Ss are excited about, it can be great for both. #sstlap
  • Braz74 - Moderator Apr 20 @ 9:37 PM EDT
yes- but set them up for success- short, important topics that ss can be good at - do more frequent and this builds skill #sstlap
    • MrStricklin Apr 20 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4-Public speaking is HUGELY underpracticed. We must prepare our Ss for further EDU and the real world. #sstlap

A6. Both. Eases subjectivity for Ts & lets Ss know expectations. Not a fan of rubrics for everything. Let Ss have voice & freedom. #sstlap
