-
Hi all! I'm Kristin from Lansing, MI 6th Grade ELA and SS
-
We use the Q1, A1 format, but feel free to add questions/insights as you think of them. Our chat will join our growing archive.
-
Hi Kristin! Great to see you!
-
Question 1 is on its way in one minute!!!
-
-
Shanda Andover ks I teach 5th grade
-
We are on break April 1-10.
-
Hi Shanda, we are happy to have you join us tonight :)
-
A1: The 2 link VERY closely, not only for Ss, but for me as well! The more we can choose & steer our learning the more engaged!
-
Empowerment provides ownership, which in turns increases engagement
-
A1) I think empowerment impacts engagement because with choice Ss feel excited to learn
-
A1b: However, Ss aren't comfortable/used to being empowered. Sometimes, they are LESS engaged, as they aren't sure what to do.
-
Just a little longer :) Tomorrow is our last day, and then we are off until April 4.

-
It is REALLY important Ss own their learning! When they don't, Ts and Ps become rather exhausted!
-
That is exciting! We have parent teacher conferences next Tues and Wed. Lots to do before break
-
Question 2 is up in 60 seconds.
-
-
Absolutely! We had ours last week and although great, they can be tiring :) I need time to plan some great stuff!
-
A2: I've been using 's A LOT! We have Class Meetings, lots of choice, Ss help run the day, flexible seating
-
-
A2) I provide choice in assignments wherever possible. Also, I will sometimes put a "work plan" up for Ss to choose work order
-
It's awesome that having the choice in what order the tasks are done can help focus a S so much! Simple things WORK!
-
Yes! This works well when Ss are at various places in their work. When I forget, Ss ask for the work plan list.
-
A2: I think the most important strategy I've used is that I REALLY try to listen & I ask for Ss feedback often. They really notice!
-
Question 3 is up in just one minute!
-
We have a "Mustard Day" about every 2 weeks for catch-up work & this work plan is SO helpful!
-
Hahaha...love that name! I will look into a catchier name once I finish gamifying my class. Love yours!
-
Thanks :) I thought I was pretty clever ;P The kids groan every time, so it is a keeper!
-
I'd love to hear what your gamification plans! I tend to gamify little parts of every day. Our Sci. unit is a game!
-
.It's pretty quiet at the , but it's never to late to join us! We're talking about empowering & engageing Ss.
-
I want to blend , habits of mind, and curriculum into a larger game platform; I will keep you posted!
-
Half way there! Question 4 in just 60 seconds!
-
-
HOLY! That sounds AWESOME! I can hardly wait!!
-
-
-
-
-
A3) I measure engagement by listening (enthusiasm) and results. Tried today for first time. Rematches showed improvement
-
-
It's my summer project! I am so excited! I will be asking current students for ideas and feedback before they leave
-
A4) Goal setting helps Ss focus on what they need to do to improve. It can help with motivation (especially if it is gamified!)
-
A3:Ss are focused & excited to talk about what we are learning. Their work is well done, they ask ?s & help each other
-
What a great idea! It is quite ambitious, but there are SO many possibilities!
-
Are you ready? Question 5 is coming up in the next minute!
-
-
A4: Goal-setting helps Ss focus, gives them a target & when they reflect, it helps them id their strengths & places for improvement.
-
It is ambitious but I'll start with the framework (thinking Amazing Race w/superheros as charac.) & add elements as I go
-
A5: Games, fun, meaningful challenges, giving choice, using a variety of tools, backchannels, discussion, tech
-
I would love to be in your class to try it out :)
-
A5) Ask Ss how they want to "show what they know" and then sprinkle with some purposeful tech applications
-
A5b: Creating, demonstrating, videos, simulations, role-playing...so many ways, so little time :)
-
I love challenges. I like the idea of side quests, and love backchannels, too.
-
Question 6 in 60 seconds!
-
-
It seems you have been reading some :) I REALLY love what you are thinking!
-
Finished it on Sunday. It's all I'm thinking about now as I plan forward. I keep writing down ideas.
-
A6: I've been surprised that many Ss don't always want/like the power, it's uncomfortable for them!
-
A6) Biggest surprises: Kids saying "I feel like I am smarter today than I was yesterday." Better recall & integration of concepts
-
It's so great to hear that, as so many Ts get turned off of the idea of gamification.
-
Hello friends! Jumping in very late! I forgot about being on SK time tonight.
-
EXACTLY what we want to happen! It works!!
-
Happy to see you Michelle! Darn daylight savings time ;P I like your time better!
-
Question 7 is right on deck!
-
Do you have the "spring forward" thing too? Wasn't sure if Canada participated in this crazy activity
-
Not ALL of Canada. It's messing me up, as I'm not sure which timezones are affected!
-
Time again? I will be home close to 8 tomorrow from a meeting.
-
I see. We only have a couple of places that opt out. Unnecessary disruption to the pace of life!
-
LOL...are you on the Remind list? Here's how you can get a reminder text. Text to (587) 333-7873
-
Final question coming up already!
-
Will try to be there then. It should work!
-
-
-
A7: It's challenging that Ss often prefer comfortable to engaging. & working as a team does help!
-
A7) Ss who have personality clashes at time dramatize activities that suck some of the fun out of it;
-
A7 I find it challenging to engage all types of learners at the same time.
-
Yes, often have Ss who say things that infer they want to be told what to do
-
YES!!It's not always easy to help them learn to collaborate & think "we" over "me"
