Hey all! Derek, Librarian & Digital Coach at an Intermediate school in @washk12. Excited to come back to #UTedChat after a LONG break. Time to get back to learning. #TISHawks#washk12
Yeah, @washk12 uses a 6-7 Intermediate model and that's where I am, so kind of a Middle School approach for me which is something I swore I'd never do but am LOVING it! #UTedChat
A1 #MakerEd is allowing students (and teachers) the chance to create and make things using academic skills learned in classes and other skills not learned in classes. A chance for creativity to really show. #UTedChat
A1: For me it is a place for kids to create, learn, share, etc. It is a place to share their talents and teach https://t.co/wPVHyvt54Y is a place of learning in disguise. #utedchat
A1 While I don't YET have a #Makerspace in my school, I am hoping to get one started in the next year or so, once I can get a handle on what I'm supposed to be doing as a new Librarian. #UTedChat#MakerEd#washk12
A1: Working with my Innovative learning coach, we have created what we call “Tech Weeks” and choose a digital tool where teachers come down during their preps & after school to get training & then use those tools in their classrooms w/ their S’s #UTedChat
My classroom has been an intentional #makerspace for some time, but now our school realizes a true #makerspace should be in a community space - so we're taking over the library next. #utedchat
A1: I like to define maker education as any time Ss have the opportunity to build ideas in a space that allows them the freedom and opportunity to engage in authentic exploration. A goal of some kind is important!

A1:When I think MakerEd I remember the shops in Jr. High. For me it's more of a blur/blend with Genius time. Definitely, soldering, cardboard, coding, robotics, but also art, cooking, fish tank scaping, etc. I've not scratched the surface. #UTedchat
I love that you're having your teachers get involved with #MakerEd because it seems like once they're onboard they're more likely to get the students going with it. Way to go! #UTedChat#MakerEd
My #makerspace is a room in my library. It is full of cool things like robots, Legos, other building materials, craft supplies, old computer parts. It is a space run by students for students. It is a place for them to go at lunch and be creative. #utedchat
Wait a minute. Not taking it over, but adding to the awesome that is already there, right? The Library is the heart of the school and I believe a #Makerspace can be a great addition but not a replacement. #UTedChat#LibChat#TLChat
I would absolutely LOVE to do that. Who would you suggest? I am currently putting together a day of school visits on March 7th, the day before #UELMA19 so let me know who I should come visit. #UTedChat
A2 I think a makerspace is a collection of materials and tools where students can create through prototyping and more. It doesn’t have to be a physical space. #UTedChat
Yeah, we have a #3Dprinter that our CTE Shop teacher uses as well as some of the other things he's doing in class, but we don't have a dedicated #Makerspace yet. #UTedChat#MakerEd

A2: Space for me is anywhere that learning is happening. Could be a chat in the Twitterverse, a library, classroom or room dedicated to learning #UTedChat
And that's exactly why I really want to come and check out your Library! Ever since I heard about it on the @UENpd Homeroom podcast with @Covili & @DaniKSloan I knew I HAD to come see it! #UTedChat#MakerEd

No Maker Space as in a room. I wanted it infused in the room. I thought about mour transition from a computer lab to integrating tech into room. That’s my vision (granted there’s no heavy equipment). #utedchat
A2 I think a #Makerspace is very open to what space you have available. It can be a room that is always ready and left out or even a cart that makes its way into different spaces. A makerspace is more of a mindset. #UTedChat#MakerEd
#UTedChat
A3: my latest creations. Food for a low carb diet (cauliflower cheese tots) and finishing up our laundry room. (Honey-do’s)
About the only thing I’m making besides my final papers for my Masters!!!!!!
A3: My husband loves to make Halloween decor. He has made an entire graveyard for our yard. He sculpts, paints, redesigns, etc. His next step is animatronics. I’m excited for that. I love to build with Legos (esp Lego robots). I want to learn more about robots. #utedchat
I focused on cardboard this year - I'm learning there's a lot you can teach and learn about engineering, design, and prototyping. Here is one example for a project my Ss did for the school play - try and guess the play...#utedchat
A3 I am currently in the planning stage of my first podcast. I would LOVE to help students at my school create & deliver podcasts about their learning so I'm learning HOW to do it so I can better help them. Plus @MrNesi won't stop pushing me until I'm done. #UTedChat#PodcastEDU
A3: I also love making Breakout boxes from scratch. My husband and I are looking into starting an escape room business. We have already made one room and done it with 4 different sets of teachers for pd. #utedchat
Q3 I also LOVE @LEGO_Group and I know I'm not alone in that love. I'd love to help students (and teachers) open up more with their creativity and build with LEGO. Maybe even start a @FirstLEGOLeague as well. #UTedChat
I would love to hear more about this #MakerEd Conference at @RowlandHall this summer. Is there an email list we can join so we don't miss out? #UTedChat
Save the Date! Join us for a one day Maker conference for educators. June 13, 2019 @RowlandHall. Follow through on your commitment to become a #MakerEd teacher - sponsored by @ucet. Ask me for more info!
Q4: How can you envision teachers applying #MakerEd concepts to classroom learning? What are the barriers for teachers wanting to implement #MakerEd?#UtEdChat
I have a science teacher buddy who wants to start the team as well but neither of us have enough time to be the Solo coach, so we thought we'd team-coach it. It should be fun! #UTedChat

I have been DYING to get involved with @MakeyMakey and even had the chance to attend a Professional Development day with @CUENV a couple months ago but wasn't able to make it. Maybe sometime in the future. #UTedChat#MakerEd

A4: That’s my next goal. One barrier is the amount of supplies - I need more robots! I really think it would enhance their teaching. Ultimate goal: Have students teaching the classes. #utedchat
A3 My family has really enjoyed creating #geocaching containers over the years. Once made, finding the perfect place to hide a cache is the next part of the fun. We love locating old logging cabins in the mountains. #UTedChat
Awesome! Please be sure to share more as it gets closer and more fully planned because it sounds awesome! I have added it to my summer calendar as a tentative event. Thanks! #UTedChat
A4: Another barrier is teachers “ not having time.” I’m working on ways now to show them it’s not an additional thing but something to improve the Ss learning of what they are already teaching. #utedchat
I think it takes effort to bridge the gap between what teachers want to do and getting them to where they are comfortable doing it. I think sometimes it is the fear of failure. How to teach them that failure is the biggest success? #utedchat

A4 One of the biggest barriers of teachers utilizing #Makerspaces & #MakerEd ideas is not being familiar with the ideas themselves. We need to help teachers feel comfortable with the ideas before they are willing to try them out in their classes. #UTedChat
A4 I think a great way to get teachers familiar with the concepts of #MakerEd is to have them try out #Makerspace ideas themselves. Similar to what @kennyAssmus shared earlier. #UTedChat
A4: My Android Phones are dying. I'm checking the features on the pay as you go phones. They start around $26 each. Need to make sure they have gyros in them. Some don't. VR/AR, App building, Video, Photo, Google Science Journal... #utedchat
We need to take time to play together as a faculty! When teachers feel for themselves how valuable building/tinkering/exploring can be, they’ll want to share it with their kids! 😍 #UtEdChat
A5 For me, the biggest challenge is wrapping my head around the actions. I use inquiry and productive struggle for other lessons, but don't understand what I understand as freeform creation...

And when school faculties learn and play together the morale of the school increases and the culture improves. We need to enjoy working with our colleagues & our students can feel when we are happy or not at school and that affects their learning. #UTedChat
A5: Just helping Ts understand the value of it. Failure is okay, playing with things is okay, using materials in new ways is okay. Getting Ss to buy in was hard at the beginning. But having Ss run it - they know what their peers like. #utedchat
A5 Time and effort. Two of the most difficult things to overcome in any school setting. But if you have administration that is willing and supportive of the ideas then you WILL have much more success than otherwise. #UTedChat#MakerEd
Faculty meetings for sure, even just some fun cardboard building. That requires admin buy-in, though. I’m lucky to have quite adventurous admin! I also have open teacher workshops in our makerspace after school now and then. #UTedChat
A5: Challenges: Sharp edges and soft fleshed users, Heat and the desire to chase someone with the glue gun, Fast turning tools & long hair and only having two adults. #utedchat
That’s a great quote!! When folks ask what’s outstanding about our school, I never say our makerspace or curriculum or whatever... it’s our focus on social/emotional. The makerspace work we do would be impossible without rooting in SEL. #UTedChat
If you're in the area (or are willing to travel to Sunny St George) we have #EdcampStGeorge on Saturday at my school. We'd love to have you join us. Check out https://t.co/RYCtfQR5KA for more info & register to attend. it's free and will be awesome! #UTedChat@EdcampUSA
Most of our faculty love breakout box during faculty meetings, back-to-school, and such! They take forever to set up, but the smiles and team-building are so worth it. #UTedChat
You're right! I find worth in Maker/Genius because it enlists and magnifies the strengths of so many of my Ss who don't fit the traditional model. #utedchat
"That's how we've always done it" are 6 of the most dangerous words in education. Really sad for sure. We need to break out of our molds and be willing to try new things. #UTedChat
I know. It sickens me that many students today will never have the shop experience in school due to a few bad apples and politicians changing rules/laws on us. It makes me sick! #UTedChat
Funny trend in education though... other fields too? We’ve had “That’s how we’ve always done it!” pop up after only the second year of some new programs. “Well, historically...” We’ve only done it once! 😆 #UTedChat
A5: I want to learn Arduino (and code for that matter). I'm tinkering with the idea of creating a comprehensive PBL unit on the tear down and rebuild of a bike. The culminating paper will be a persuasive essay on who should get the bike! ratios, fractions, energy... #utedchat
That makes me crazy! As a new Librarian and new to my school, I hear this phrase ALL-THE-TIME and often it's something that was new last year. So maddening. #UTedChat
A6 I am looking into some @FirstLEGOLeague stuff for next year. That and seeing how I can start to bring some general #MakerED ideas into my Library. #UTedChat
Sorry to pop in and back out, folks! Have to finish bed time for my own littles...
Registration isn’t up yet, but our third annual summer teacher workshop at @EvergreenBIGLab will be June 19-21 in north Seattle. We’d love to have you join us - UT isn’t so far away! 😊
#UtEdChat
My principal has challenged me to design my make club challenges around the Global Sustainability Goals. Great starter for #makerEd challenges in the classroom! #UtEdChat
A6 I'd also LOVE to get some @RaspberryPi devices in my school for students to learn some coding and get them going with some digital making as well. #UTedChat
