You STILL haven't made that happen yet??
Hello George! Welcome to . Thanks for joining!
9:03 Tonight will be an abridged version of . We will be finishing up early...thanks for hanging out with us tonight!
Oh man!! It's going around...hope you are much better soon!
Q1: If colleagues wrote an IEP for you to hang in classroom, what hilarious, but scary-accurate, goal would they write for you?
A1: "Kelli will not clown around in class for 5 seconds."
I've got my dancing shoes & sparkle pants cued up for the big event!
Hi from Brenda, River Forest, IL, Art and SpEd teacher, First time on sped chat!
Angie Boone middle school and high school Resource teacher
Hi Angie! Thanks for joining
Hi Brenda!! So glad you are joining us for . Make yourself at home...we are all friends here! :)
Pleasure crossing your path
Welcome to ! Art and SPED teacher?? That's a perfect combination!
A1: when given instruction in cleaning her desk, Angie will leave at least 1 sq inch clean!
A1: lol. Kevin will respond to nonverbal signals to not talk out & dominate classroom discussions, allowing others to participate
I agree...you and PE teachers are the accommodation ninjas!
Late Laura here from Indiana π
THIS is the exact reason that I have keyless entry! :)
Hello ! Jodie, HS reading IS from Ohio! Sorry I'm late!!! π³
A1: Oh dear....this one is a doozie... does it have to be just one goal? πππ
Hi Jodie! We are glad you are here...just jump right on in! :)
I'm giving you the T stare down
A1. When frustrated or disappointed laura will control her facial expression's on four of five occasions
A1) When given any amount of free time, Jennifer will consistently find 2-3 things to fill it up with instead of relaxing.
You aren't late.. but I feel like you should be packing or weighing bags! HA!!
A1 Eric will not trip over desks or fall off his stool while being over enthusiast while teaching
You know you always wear them!!! https://t.co/vHCuKidvDn
I've got my dancing shoes & sparkle pants cued up for the big event!
A1: love it!! Jodie will not juggle too many tasks at one time!
Q2: Goal-setting: do you write goals & step-by-step plans for self or just "yep, that's a weakness" and stab at it when you can?
A1: Danielle will finish her coffee prior to students walking in so she is prepared to handle the "I need a pencil" requests
A1: Tonya will not try to work her cat into general social conversation 4 out of 5 opportunities....
A1. When angry George will make positive statements 50% of the time across all settings.
this could be a Goal for me as well https://t.co/uxxoGquwxu
A1: love it!! Jodie will not juggle too many tasks at one time!
A2: Def have long term goals I'm constantly working on. Day to day - have to be flexible, but striving for goals
A2: I'm pretty much a stabber, although our teacher evaluation system has a new professional goals component.
I leap out of bed singing shake it off with my sparkle pants
usually spend hours contemplating weaknesses then forgot them til they happen again, rinse repeat
A1: Same goal for me, but I don't know how to go about making that happen!@jodiepierpoint
May I witness that? I'll even write that IEP up for you. ha ha
I am over here dying at how hilarious this is if you don't know the context https://t.co/ZRUN7VCQw0
A2: I'm pretty much a stabber, although our teacher evaluation system has a new professional goals component.
I usually have the same goals: be happy, have FUN, smile, appreciate others, build confidence & ignite a joyful spark in others
Q3: What does goal setting mean to your students? A nice idea or something they apply to real life? Are their IEPs legal or life?
A2: I write specific objectives for the students but not always for myself...I should work on that so I can improve, too!
A2) I have Goals and they are written down; but I am lucky if I get time to breathe or take a break let alone β
them off the list.
A2: I wrote goals that I wanted to work on, I think I need to display them so I am mindful of them
BAHAA!!!! It's why I love
I almost need that though. It's weird. Lack of consistency isn't good for me!
drinking coffee & teaching the ultimate multi task!
A2 We use a locally developed system, not RISE
A3: All goals should apply to real life. That's what makes them realistic and achievable. Oh and grounds for celebration too!
A2: My favorite goal: Have Courage and Be Kind. Every day.
those are all great goals! Thanks for sharing https://t.co/MZSxW6N3wm
I usually have the same goals: be happy, have FUN, smile, appreciate others, build confidence & ignite a joyful spark in others
good luck with progress monitoring
A2:Tough becuz most of u hve 2 make things happen on the fly becuz of constant unexpected; but the GOAL of the fly has 2 be great!
A3: For my Ss, we use a daily personal goal journal to address behavior or social skills. We always evaluate success, never judge.
Great idea! Do you do that with your Ss?
A3: Goals need to be "real" to the S. I don't write fluff. Students have to benefit from them. I include them in planning!
A2 What timing! My professional and student growth goals are due this Friday! Yikes!
thanks! My goals are also communicated to the students, so they can progress monitor & provide feedback β€οΈ
A3: Legal AND life. Student input when developing IEP helps them take ownership of their goals
Ohhh..I love this! Daily. That's so powerful for Ss.
Whoops... may have answered that wrong. Yes!!! I have my students set goals - we reassess quarterly! Celebrate too! π
I like this a lot: "legal or life" Now THAT will make one reflect in IEP goal writing
Q4: How do you think we could better use goal setting with students? How do we make them compliant, yet meaningful to them?
A3 honestly most of my Ss have no idea what their IEP says .the goals I set In class are for learning which equals life
A3: goals should be part of their lives, not just legal. It's one important piece that drives our instruction
I think it's important to include students!
A3) I would hope they are both legal and life! We must make sure they are relaxant to the student or they will never be achieved.
I remember u mentioning this before & I still love it the second time around
A4: Goals should address needs, but also prepare them for the future- what do they need to be successful?
A4: Listen to your Ss esp. transition age. They give better ideas than what I come up with on my own. It's their life, not mine.
A4: We must scaffold goals & objectives. Ask students daily "what is your goal for the day, how about the week?" & build up to em
A4: My Ss hated goal setting, but because there is no judgment for 'failure', they no longer resist. Motto: Celebrate or try again
A4 ask them for their input .What is important to them.
A4: Goals are more meaningful when we see the data. Use it to inform, take risks, and try again...our Ss are the same.
A4: Allow Ss to be actively involved in the goal setting
A3)I would hope they are both legal and life! We must make sure they are relevant to the student or they will never be achieved.
hi I'm Lindsay. MS sped T in SW Iowa. Sorry I'm joining late...
What a great point! Sometimes it is even "this hour" ...that's a victory and something to celebrate
A4: include in setting the goal, when possible. Ss are the ones who have to do the work, buy in important
Hi Lindsay! No worries...we are a great bunch....just jump on in!
Whether we have an IEP or not...we all have goals for ourselves and it's OK to revise them.
yes like in my history class. We have essential questions, this is the goal to learn .What is your personal goal
what a great motto "celebrate and try again" https://t.co/FnGGTEmHB7
A4: My Ss hated goal setting, but because there is no judgment for 'failure', they no longer resist. Motto: Celebrate or try again
Hi Better late than never :)
A4: Involve students in setting their goals when possible & work towards them gradually, celebrating small victories along the way
Q5: What are your students' 10-year goals? How do students know when they have achieved the goal? How do they know their plan?
Love it! Celebrate risks & attempts towards goal too!! https://t.co/3yDmNr2o4W
A4: My Ss hated goal setting, but because there is no judgment for 'failure', they no longer resist. Motto: Celebrate or try again
A1: Lindsay will not Trip over herself while teaching 50% of class.
let me know if you need anything! Noble journey!
yes it is expected that they will change as we/they learn & grow , constantly changing & learning
Q5: For me this one is all about relationships. Do you know what your Ss truly WANT and how are you helping them get there!
A4 I think data and measurability is the hard part of goal setting.
Q2: acknowledge and reflect then forget π
A5 I Teach a class Success 101 we the entire course us constructed around Ss devising a 10 yr.pkan
A5: Have you seen this? U could have them write their goals, set date & auto email. I think it's cool. https://t.co/7tBXSSMvXf
agreed. You want to build trust so you can be realistic with their 10 year plan
A5: For me this one is all about relationships. Do you know what your Ss truly WANT and how are you helping them get there?
A5: HS students struggle with long term goals. I try to help them envision college, work, life. These are my fav convos w students
A5: My ultimate goal for my students is for them to know and feel that they are a gift in this world and they have much to offer.
WHOA. Mind Blown. Thanks for sharing this.
yes but it certainly depends on the students age
Takes US almost completely out. Huge student centered which equal meaningful.
Engaging in these conversations is inspiring. We often don't give Ss enough credit. They WILL change the world!
A4: make Ss part of goal setting so they have ownership & it's meaningful.
A5: 10-year goals? We do good to address daily & grading period goals. But we try to connect what they are doing to the longterm.
Very good point! Thanks for that reminder.
Q7: What is your professional goal for yourself in 10 years? Admin, additional endorsement? Do you have a plan? Have you started?
WHAAAAAAAT??!!! My students need this. And maybe my teachers. And maybe everyone I know. https://t.co/EvROcXqneB
A5: Have you seen this? U could have them write their goals, set date & auto email. I think it's cool. https://t.co/7tBXSSMvXf
yes. We envision a "normal day" 5 yrs after HS. What do they want that day to be like?
Q6: What is your professional goal for yourself in 10 years? Admin, additional endorsement? Do you have a plan? Have you started?
A5: my Ss are planning for after school, we need to do more celebrations of reaching goals!
yes that's our job to get ready to be the next generation of citizens !
We need more opps to talk to Ss about their goals. Help them search resources (work, college, etc). Love these convos with kids!
Q7:finishing up admin endorsement but leaning towards sped leadership. I β€οΈ sped!
YAY! Music to my ears....Good Luck in whatever you do.
A5) Sorry, but most of my kiddos are lucky if they can set and achieve a goal for today let alone planning 10 years ahead!
A6 easy for me got into teaching late can't see every leaving classroom but would love to mentor young Ts as well
What a great place to start! One day at a time...leads to long term goal setting! You have got this.
A6: I want to be able to inspire others to be sped teachers & to create curriculum frameworks to support all S's
A6: I want to be able to inspire others to be sped teachers & to create curriculum frameworks to support all S's
A5: So much of this is about showing my Ss what options are out there & showing them the way to get there
A6: I have professional goals, as an educator I hope that in 10 yrs they'll even be different than what thinking now!
A6: I'd love to do some writing and presenting at conferences. I tried the admin thing...no thanks.
A6:My goal is to keep learning through the eyes of a child, stay passionate for special education, and inspire others to be kind.
Me too, Me too! and I love presenting...We should all present together! :)
A6: I love teaching, but in 10 years hope to retire, will have spent 30 years as a teacher!
Congratulations! What a gift you have given to the world!
not a doubt that will happen!!!
A5 and A6) I'm with your kiddos! I'm lucky to set a daily goal, let alone a 10 year plan!
TOTALLY agree! Done and Done. :)
Me too. Let's do that together. :)
As education changes we should be changing too! We always need to grow! It's what's best for our students!
πππ teaching is a blessing in life!
A6: 2 find means of communication 4 every S I work w who doesnt hve means YET. I want 2 meet THEM ¬ filtered intros thru others
A6: maybe sped admin. maybe research. maybe teaching. definitely advocacy.
ALL the feels on this one! is changing lives--can't wait to see you reach this goal!
A6) In 10 years...Hmm...I have often considered SPED ADMIN but right now am happy making a difference in the lives of my students.
to me, the most powerful form of communication is a smile.
Okay, last one for tonight. Q8: What is your goal for special education? Where do we take this field and profession?
A6: HS Admin, but working w sped population/advocacy. There's few admins w sped backgrounds.
A8. better mental health support services
A7: Stay passionate, share our joy & knowledge. Most of all be advocates & voices for our students. π
Ss are just a important as other Ss; inclusion, understanding, no stigma
I think we need to write and present together. ha ha
Oops A8: https://t.co/zg7ehAFXF0
A7: Stay passionate, share our joy & knowledge. Most of all be advocates & voices for our students. π
A8: to give each Ss the skills needed to be successful in their world
A8: My goal? For sped Ss to no longer see school as a waste of time, which means we must change what we do as sped teachers.
A8: Inclusion for all students. Improvement in understanding of mental health & disability in schools.
Oh my goodness. Yes, please.
A:8 more co-teach, more collaboration (across districts & states) more input to state & fed gov't, less paperwork!
A:8 more co-teach, more collaboration (across districts & states) more input to state & fed gov't, less paperwork!
I had someone one say if you believe in Inclusion there is no "but....." after that. Just Inclusion.
A8: I would love to see special education goals & objectives tied to technology and 21st century skills beginning at elementary
I had someone once say if you believe in Inclusion there is no "but....." after that. Just Inclusion.
a8) To help make all students successful in life they want to live.
YES! Inclusion IS our real world daily experience.
YES....in the life THEY want to live!
ABSOLUTELY! sped S's need to feel valued & that school is a means of adding value to their lives!
Time to wrap up tonight! Thanks for the great dialogue & collaboration. Continue to use the hashtag as you finish your chats.
A8: Better awareness of special ed. and true respect for kids w/ special needs, not giving up on them, stopping bullying, etc.
