Matt from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (still Great White North) - I teach K-8 PE & just finished coaching basketball season for 3 teams #timetorelax#espechat
A1: World games are a huge part of my MS #PhysEd program. They are integrated and used as units since I share my facilities with three other teachers. #espechat
A1) I currently do not. When instarted at my school 3 years ago the kids basic skills were way behind so i have been playing catch up. Looking to add new things going forward. #espechat
A1 Games around the World is my theme for the year. I have included some here and there before but this year a sport or game from another country that my Ss have never played is the way we are learning all skills/standards. #espechat
A1 Just started this year by mixing in cricket š! Definitely want to keep it going and weave them in as I see them fit in under a #TGfU umbrella that Iām working on or even an outcome I want to include/hone in on #espechat
I love using them to both challenge my students who are athletic and engage my students who have decided they are not good at traditional sports they have played #espechat
A2: Curling would have to by mine because of how quickly they understood the rules & language as well as how zealous they are to play it; even if it's Rock & Rings (coming for a day this year) or Human Curling #espechat
A2. Contrary to my A1, I have done cricket beforeā¦love playing it indoors. walls and tennis ball keep the game lively. I love that the game is play 360* - no something seen in the most traditional games #espechat
A2: My favorite world game is brƤnnboll, a striking and fielding game from Sweden. It's the most inclusive sport I've taught and played. My 2nd and 3rd faves are ringette and Ki-o-Rahi. #espechat
A2: So far I have only taught Patintero. It was a perfect fit both for what I was already teaching and also because I have Ss from the Philippines. #espechat
I'll have to try that one day before Spring Break because I know my kids would go nuts for Sled Hockey - not sure my mini sticks would last long #espechat
A2: I have a few love the engagementI see in Ki-O-Rahi, the simplicity of Ringo is great for teaching basic Net and wall concepts, Brannbol and Pesapallo change up things for kids not interested in Baseball for striking and fielding #espechat
A2: Bocce: In Maryland Bocce is part of the Corollary sports leagues, so an international game, underhand pattern extension and an into to HS varsity sports #espechat
The best game we played this year was Kho Kho from India. A team tag game that requires teamwork to play well. The speedy kids in class couldn't beat slower kids who used better strategy. So cool to see. Used it with 3rd-5th. #espechat
A2: My favorite world game is brƤnnboll, a striking and fielding game from Sweden. It's the most inclusive sport I've taught and played. My 2nd and 3rd faves are ringette and Ki-o-Rahi. #espechat
A2: Lacrosse - it is Canada's National Summer Sport but lots of my Ss have never seen or played it being from immigrant families - they love it because it's a novel game #espechat
A2 Hmm š¤, Skyros can be fun because it teaches movement off the ball (canāt move w ball in their hands), can add loads of secondary rules (time alloted before throwing, adding skills such as punting, adding safe zones, etc.), minimal equip! 1/2 #espechat
A2b Cricket was also fun this year because I saw all of my baseball minded ss challenges in the cognitive way, striking all of a sudden wasnāt so easy, running with a bat was š¤Æ. Adding the social emotional component was huge for me, it was a big focus for us 2/2 #espechat
Q3: Do you discuss the origin and cultural significance of the world games you teach? If so is there one that you love sharing the story behind the game? #espechat
I also used a TGfU approach and invented lead up games. I am hoping to present about it this fall at @MOAHPERD convention. Can definitely share resources before then.#espechat

A2 Ampe is a quick game to teach and easy for any age group. Great for large groups and when I need a few minutes to set something up. We donāt clap, we just do theee jumps. https://t.co/nr9QnRd0TT#espechat
A3) I donāt use alot of discussion time if we do one, but I will use informational handouts for students sometimes if they are interested in the activity. #espechat
A3: I did share where Patintero came from. With later classes I was able to share that the mom of the Ss from there was so excited because that is what she played everyday from 1st-HS. #espechat
A3: I believe that all games are "world games," but, yes, I discuss the origin and significance of each game and how they relate to what we are learning. (Maybe it would be helpful to define world games?) #espechat
A3 Instead of the usual soccer unit, we learned Cuju, the ancient form of soccer where modern soccer comes from. That gave students the understanding we were starting at the beginning not just with skills but with the beginning of the game. #espechat
A3 if I taught more world games, I would. Being in nyc, we have new learners from all over. Iād like to learn more about my students cultures and teach games from there. #espechat
A3b: Last year, during brƤnnboll, my Ss and I wanted to know if the name of the game really did translate to "burn ball." So, I asked a few friends on Twitter, and @KenForde asked his Ss who are from Sweden. They were thrilled! #espechat
Use Rocks and Rings about every 3 years to keep the Ss exposed to the sport and the local college ( @UofA_AugVikings )has a junior program that I like to promote as best I can. #espechat
Agreed. We start with just jumping solo to get their feet right, then jumping with a partner, then deciding who is straight or opposite and counting points. Once someone gets to three, raise your hand to find a new partner #espechat
A3.2: Individual, dual, or team sports/activities that are new and unfamiliar to my Ss and are considered "non-traditional" or "cultural" to the #PhysEd community. #espechat
A4: I utilize the games to show how all Net and wall, Striking and fielding, etc are connected and how concepts from one can help you be successful in others. While respecting what makes each game special. #espechat
A4 only see my Ss once/wk so we are either playing the game/sport or learning skills/playing lead up games to play full version. Not really time for anything else.#espechat
A3 I shared a bit for cricket, they got a kick out of my fun facts such as the longest cricket game. Cue in ss reactions āwhat!? Did they sleep?? š®ā I think itās part of it, the tid bits you get to add so ss put on different lenses #espechat
A4: Using world games allows me to teach familiar concepts/ideas/skills through games & activities that are unfamiliar to my Ss. They make deeper connections, are more willing to accept T feedback, & see how activities from the same TGfU categories relate to each other. #espechat
A4. World Games link very well with a Standards based program. Also links well with PBL and Inquiry in school. All movements connect we just have to find links. #espechat
A4: My what for the lesson tells Ss what to focus on, and the why often ties it to other things we have done or will do to help with transfer. #espechat
A4b: games like BrƤnnboll allow runners to choose when they advance bases which provides better scaffolding for players to learn to make base running decisions. This allows for success later in other games #espechat
This could be a āturn and talkā or exit ticket moment. Have students connect to the theme of the game, how do they know it aligns with the concept, etc. #espechat
A3b A sport or activity that isnāt the everyday for my ss, itās novel and unknown to them whether itās individual/team setting but still has that still transfer very much embedded #espechat
A5: When I did, the Ss didn't know about it, but the parents were excited. Now the mom is going to come spend a day with me to work with classes. I think I might us it at my Bring Your Parent to PE Week. #espechat
A5: Two years ago my Ss visited assessment stations while playing Ki-o-Rahi. I asked if they or a member of their family at home spoke a language other than English. If I remember correctly, 32 Ss out of 60 were able to add a language to the list. Very few repeats. #espechat
A5. engaged in conversations with some Ss from India about Kabaddiā¦.they were super excited to share what they knew. Never followed through with modified version of the game. #espechat
A5: My Ss mostly are immigrants from Africa and love soccer. Other than that, there's not much they can say they played from when they lived there. #espechat
A4 I used Cricket as an activity to transfer the striking and fielding skills. It may LOOK different and require sone slight changes in biomechanics but the concept is still there. You may find success in one, yet you may also find challenge in another #espechat
A5. I really started to develop world games at school because of military base alignments. We have more officers coming to DC for work and they move into are. I have had students from all walks sand places. #espechat
A5. I did a warm up game using timer tops from @FlaghouseInc and an aide for one of my students told me about a game she played in India with tops. Bay blades were huge with the kids at the time so we talked about different types of tops and what cultures play with them #espechat
A5: I have a good sized group of students from the Philippines and when I introduced them to Patintero a student who is usually disengaged was offering to help me teach it set it up etc. He shared his sister played on the HS team back in the Philippines #espechat
A5) Yes! It's easy to get a poll from students using google forms. See what cultures represent your classroom. The buy-in is amazing. 7th grade dance is perfect. I taught Hawaiian (Hukilau), Philipino (Tinikling), Mexican (El Jarabe Tapatio), and Jewish (Horah) #espechat
Kabaddi is one I don't get. I was worried my Ss would cheat and breathe and then say, "No I didnt..." Also, looked like too much rough contact in YouTube videos I watched so I taught Kho Kho instead. #espechat
A5 I think I graded upon the surface, it activated some prior knowledge as in āhey, Iāve seen this beforeā or āhey, my uncle in such and such country plays it.ā Definitely want to dive into this at a greater extent! #espechat
One student said when we learned it she would use it instead of Rock Paper Scissors from then on so we have used it that way. Have also used it when kids are antsy waiting in a line. #espechat

And here is the Granddaddy of all resource documents....A Collection of World Games (over 120 of them!) compiled into one giant document! @smartintahoe and I started working on this in 2015! https://t.co/HKSATRE94l#espechat
