to get ALL the details you can add columns for each answer a2, a3
Get students to ask the questions. "Whoever does the most questioning does the most learning" -
Good evening everyone, I am Kim and I am planing to be a math teacher. I am bilingual . Vietnamese is my first language.
A1 Inquiry-based learning means asking the right questions to find answers that really matter to the STUDENTS
A1: Student-centered learning. Teacher is facilitator.
A1 I don't know for sure but I'm thinking very personalized.
A1: When I think inquiry-based learning, I think "lightbulb moments!"
A1: It looks like Ss asking the ?s that matter to THEM
I keep waiting for the that never transpires in Southern MN
A1: Inquiry based to me means there is a question, typically based on student interests.
A1: inquiry learning needs freedom for students to choose a topic that makes it easy to go "down the rabbit hole" of information
A1: I think about essential questions that Ss help create.
Shirley from lurking tonight - looking forward to learn more about inquiry based learning!
A1 Teacher as participant instead of curriculum deliverer.
A1 - Pose a general question and have students take off on their own to answer
A1 a lot of us were introduced to inquiry learning through - it was that one right?
A1 Mental image is a lot of students diligently working in small groups. Not necessary probably, but it's a cute scene
A1 I think of figuring out something in your own way when I hear inquiry based learning
I have so many questions about this topic!
A1 Encouraging questions. Modeling pathways and seeking larger answers together.
A1: It looks like kids being kids- at any age. Curious, interested & looking for answers to their ?s
A1 Helping students question their assumptions
Same here in Central MN. Pulling my bike down in lieu of XC ski tomorrow .
A1 To me, it’s getting the students involved with what they want to learn & how they want to communicate.
I dunno I think in WL the teacher has to be an event organizer--arrange everything intricately for maximum enjoyment!
lol. crazy mean "Dien". That is how you write it.
Kim from Seattle here - Japanese!
A1 essential questions for sure but also a path for the student to find their answers & create product to show them
A1 I struggle with having 'all' Ss find an interest. I don't want to ask a question and jump to next questions.
I confess I do a lot of the question designing at first--but they're questions about THEM
A1 real-world question, real-world problem, real-world answer, real-world product, real-world audience
Thanks! I agree that is a great one!!
This, I will need to learn more about...
WL Ts need to scaffold, but I agree that Ss interests can guide the curriculum.
for baby parrots we created all the essential questions ourselves ... ?
Grown-ups and kids might not always see eye-to-eye on what to teach, but we can still help them learn FUNCTIONS more than topics.
are you thinking Genius Hour/passion projects? There's also inquiry united by a common theme, eg self-improvement
A1 I love love love content-based lessons. We're doing a unit on cell phones now - and kids are so motivated!
Q2 coming shortly, as it sounds as if we all have a pretty similar baseline understanding
A1 - Students are not empty vessels! Allowing students to be more involved in learning process- their questions and interests
I wonder if they need Vietnamese language teacher.
To be able to ask ?s Ss need to hear questions. Speaking a new language =being a parrot at first!
THIS is Inquiry-Based Learning! https://t.co/trJRwnioTd
I agree. Allow for freedom of discovery, but set up cool things to discover!
Our district is investigating 20% Time, Genius Hour implementation
I agree. For me, inquiry based can have teacher generated ?s for Ss best interests
Quote of the night so far: Freedom of discovery, T sets up cool things to discover https://t.co/wG0GQpJ8qG
I agree. Allow for freedom of discovery, but set up cool things to discover!
A1- Ss exploring their interests, working harder than the teacher.
yeah, I generally do except for passion projects too. I still have input on those too for baby parrots
A2 To be honest this is where Inquiry Based Learning sounds EXHAUSTING, as a T with 4-5 preps.
This is what I thought IB learning was--the main question being generated by T. https://t.co/eJu3ndMZjH
I agree. For me, inquiry based can have teacher generated ?s for Ss best interests
I LOVE for hooking kids at the beginning of Spanish 1!
A2 - I'd love to see what this looks like in IPA formatting...
A1) Inquiry based learning is driven by students' questions, interests and connections, not coverage of any kind.
A1: I see inquiry based learning in the WL classroom, as students acquiring info triggered by their interests while using L2
Yes - that's why I only create one at a time. The rest of the preps have to be something I've taught before.
A2: This is where I would love to hear tried and true ideas from experienced teachers.
A2 I’ve done “match or scrap” with my Ss—write out your ideal objectives, then match/scrap w/the curriculum document.
How do you start? Do their projects have to be Span based?
How do you get them to not shut down though with such little language?
Hi ! Sorry I am late. Amy from DFW here. I teach Spanish 2/2H.
I'm working on an IPA on sustainability for my Master's. Lots to like, but man oh man is it WORK.
hola cherie from nj. First time joining u
hola cherie from nj. First time joining u
when I have 2+ preps, I seek ways to teach the same (sorta) unit at multiple levels--similar goals, varied texts
A2: it would be fun, with a real world audience, to have them assess.
A2: I work on design &evaluation WITH the Ss. They are a part of the whole process.
A2: Personally, if students are choosing the topic I think they should be able to choose how they demonstrate understanding.
Plus level up the texts & functions of what they can do.
Hi Karen, from NC. Writing about Twitter chats and realized was missing one!
I think it might be cool to do an IBL class as an AP alternative/post-AP course.
A2: Not sure for inquiry-based lessons, but I use proficiency scales as much as possible for evaluation
A2 I try to be flexible with some projects by giving them a general idea and then telling them to be creative with their formats
A2: I designed my Spanish culture Genius Hour project to be VERY open ended - TONS of variety in topic. https://t.co/O2qcl2YZxf
started new curr w span4H new theme today . Any ideas?
A2: I like the idea of helping students do Inquiry based and evaluating on 3 cultural aspects. But how to do that best?
verrrry carefully constructed tasks, especially with Pinterest
A2: I tend to get not much variety in end product. Would love some pointers.
A2: let Ss evaluate. What better commodity than the opinion of their peers?
A2: let Ss evaluate. What better commodity than the opinion of their peers?
Sorry - broken hot water heater at grandmothers - had to help. Laura from NC French
Maybe it's me but I think I need more specific examples...
A2: could students write a proposal of how they'll show their learning?
A2- So excited to do this this week! Going to let my students play all period and see where it goes
hello Jessica from Miami Fl 1st-4th Spanish teacher
Thanks to ’s suggestion, I use to organize tags for articles/videos, etc for my classes.
Sometimes Ss need a few ideas to start. Pics &brainstorming techniques can help too.
Do they do this in English? Just curious.
I think I'm going to institute a PowerPoint/Prezi ban in my classroom for that same reason.
Lots & lots of review, looping through lots of CI to get the new vocab & expressions.
An inspiration to continue learning languages throughout a lifetime to connect with others
Great idea. Maybe even a reflection component in L2.
A2: I like this idea of having students write proposals for how they want to be assessed. https://t.co/qnEiLOimp2
A2: could students write a proposal of how they'll show their learning?
A2: Struggle with ss wanting specific product rather than open choice
A2 it's great when they can share their project rather than simply turn it in
I put pop culture in everything. Ex: How would Darth Vador do a French cooking show? =more creativity https://t.co/WfpPydpJfG
A2: I tend to get not much variety in end product. Would love some pointers.
yes using the same sentence structure over and over again
- how many who do inquiry based project do it in TL versus English?
A2 In we hammered reality hard: kept asking, but WHY would they make this product?
Coming next Tuesday on https://t.co/5IbdFyqPYr "What do you do if you are teaching a novel and it is FAILING???" Don't miss it!
A2) ramp up ways to build & demonstrate understanding-then let Ss go to work: video, podcasts, infographics, tutorials, skits...
If you give the students choice do they typically know what they want to do?
A2 i thk u have to find what works best for u & ur Ss. Every grp if diff
is great! Curating resources is really important! https://t.co/ZLc8BCmdea
Thanks to ’s suggestion, I use to organize tags for articles/videos, etc for my classes.
give a list of options- drawings, videos, postcards, etc - i steal a lot from elem Ts& English Ts
A2: IBL encourages student choice- i think this is a great way to give them choice in assessment! https://t.co/DWHUctj66j
A2: could students write a proposal of how they'll show their learning?
This is a GREAT Q... and a good seque to Q3...coming up shortly... https://t.co/R4lsIQjS5C
- how many who do inquiry based project do it in TL versus English?
heavens no! I have to spend at least a day or 2 pulling out of them topics they care about! And they STILL switch!
A2 Paolo, what topix did ur ss come up with?
choice board of types of products (with empty spots for Ss input) make three in a row by end of year? Unit? Semester?
great structure! Thanks for the visual!
Oh I've definitely provided options - but most seem to default to PP. No more!
A2 it wasn't enough for us to have a product, inquiry-based learning has to solve a real-world problem
I do it in the TL. I might explain tasks in English, but they discuss, research, write it up in TL
Our theme was science & tech, so they came up with things like Apple vs Android, PC vs Mac, tech advances in cars etc
A2: novices, students can brainstorm what they want to know about a particular theme. Adapt "I Can" statements to lesson
are great! Just have presentations change. How @ a create-your-own-adventure story?
I have a level 4 grp who’s talking about climate change!
Some struggle with choice-they would rather Ts just tell them what to do.
Honestly I think that most kids need lots of modeling to know what should even go into a proposal first
Raising the bar, allowing them to be REAL-WORLD solvers! BAM. https://t.co/74A0ccbKFz
A2 it wasn't enough for us to have a product, inquiry-based learning has to solve a real-world problem
You are welcome! The students have really embraced this & are coming up w/some great ideas to talk about!
A2 if our students are making a poster, it's to post at local cafe to encourage support of fair trade coffee
Has anyone attempted IBL at the elementary level in the TL?
Has anyone attempted IBL at the elementary level in the TL?
My kids were less concerned with real-world, more concerned with THEIR world
I find kids are afraid of the authentic audience- but forcing it is difference between now & forever I think
Really like that idea! Stealing to survive the semester!
agreed that it wouldn't happen right away, especially depending on age/maturity!
Has anyone done IBL with MSers?
interesting thought - does inquiry based need to solve a real world problem? https://t.co/7zfPeO8sfy
A2 it wasn't enough for us to have a product, inquiry-based learning has to solve a real-world problem
A2 if students are developing disaster-relief skills they need to connect with local Red Cross
I was thinking of using Google slides for students to learn their new vocab. I'm glad I saw this
Also do most teachers combine inquiry based with IPA assessments? Sorry if I am being too basic!
I was so gung ho about CHOICE when I started that it made my kids feel unsupported!
I do it in TL b/c that’s the purpose of the communication. But I scaffold so they have the bckgrnd to do research.
the way it's proposed in broader education, there has to be a real why to the question
Yes! Well said; we are learning for a reason, not just "because I said so." https://t.co/ZCsQy95K4E
A2 it wasn't enough for us to have a product, inquiry-based learning has to solve a real-world problem
Ideas for authentic audience in rural town with few local opportunities?
Do they all choose their own topics? How can you prepare for that?
the authentic audience is still a big motivator to get it right for my kids. Saving the world? Not so much
I have the same problem. The internet is really our only gateway to a large audience
I gave the overall theme, but they came up with the topics. I also met w/them as they “pitched” their ideas.
I'm not sure it's a big problem... the internet is a very large audience! :)
my kids generally don't find current events compelling either
A3 I am terrible at this, hoping to learn a lot from everyone else!
I want to know about this, too, Maris. https://t.co/pAwiMU3LPZ
Also do most teachers combine inquiry based with IPA assessments? Sorry if I am being too basic!
On the internet! Blogs, YouTube videos, twitter..we were mentioned by the Louvre. Ss were super happy.
A2 if students are reviewing restaurants & tourism sites, they're posting about their region on https://t.co/jwrgyoiA1k
Sorry I am being smothered by a 2 yr old...what was Q3?
yes, they're very self-centered, but they want to talk low-stakes topics--videogames, hunting, makeup
I certainly am. That’s how they’re going to show what they’ve learned.
A3 I feel like my scaffolding is either too much or not enough. Tips, please!
A2 So how does a WL class prepare something for an English-speaking audience while still using their lang skills?
Q3 is where I get lost on the whole inquiry-based model.
Our project was to help Red Cross with local Spanish-speaking population in natural disaster
Ok, that is just AWESOME!!!
is interpersonal hard if they all know different words?
A3 low language skills is definitely a problem with the inquiry model!
#1 scaffolding tip: focus on a few essential verbs that work for questions, answers, everything
A3 I struggle with this bc we have native speakers to almost non-speakers in the same class
A3 CI in context, at elem sch thematic to tap into prior knowledge of content and schema
A3 Anticipate what structures Ss may need to accomplish tasks. Talking about childhood hobbies? Imperfect. Potential jobs? Future.
A3: scaffolding= making sure Ss know which ?s to ask and where to ask them
I use different levels of mediation - start open, keep narrowing in until they get it
How do we keep at 90% TL in novice-level IBL scenarios? It can't be a paradox... right?
A3 my opinion is you have to give serious guidance, limit choice with novices. I create questions. I guide product
From what I've learned about IPAs I don't think you can mix it with inquiry-based. Maybe I'm wrong?
I’m only having them do interpersonal w/in their groups so they’re on the same page.
that is what I am thinking but I am trying to picture how to fit inquiry based in a bigger picture
A3 inquiry learning IS the 21st-C direction but language classes cannot sacrifice their primary goals
A3 I GIVE novices questions to copy and rephrase. Intermediates can come up with their own questions
catching up and wondering how many projects each quarter/semester/year?
A3 I will almost never ask my novices to find their own sources. Endless frustration and/or descent to English.
But I still want them to present out to the class next week so we all can learn. I’ll provide support for that.
I do 2 IPAs per 6-week unit: one to inspire early on, one to reflect toward the end
A3: I give a lot of guidance, probably too much
A3 i often set up of essential terms to study&practice before topics so they feel more prepared
A3 Am eager to hear this - Ss will stay in TL while I'm directing the conversation, but don't like doing it in pairs or groups. ??
Novices do need more guidance but can still have lots of choice in vocab & teach each other https://t.co/TFVWYkVKvP
A3 my opinion is you have to give serious guidance, limit choice with novices. I create questions. I guide product
On a related note, I'm curious about everyone's pacing with this.
I can see negotiation of meaning, but seems like my kids would present and not discuss in level 1/2 esp!
A3: I use inquiry-based with IM and above, probably should learn and implement with Novices. Just worried about too much L1.
EXAMPLES: How do you want to improve your life? How can we help an impoverished school in Colombia?
This is my fear, too. https://t.co/yaGdhLi6DI
A3: I use inquiry-based with IM and above, probably should learn and implement with Novices. Just worried about too much L1.
How do you handle such a huge gap?
I would love to ask you ?s. trying to do this w/ my IM Students https://t.co/fGkHuqOEat
A3: I use inquiry-based with IM and above, probably should learn and implement with Novices. Just worried about too much L1.
I give novices a curated list of good-fit resources for them. Helps them find info & feel empowered https://t.co/dFp5xQXffs
A3 I will almost never ask my novices to find their own sources. Endless frustration and/or descent to English.
1) too cool for Twitter (strictly Instagram/Snapchat), hated People en Espanol
I agree! I think it would be difficult for novices to negotiate a lot of meaning
I think the answer is a compromise between tons of input and student-directed learning
A3: No answers, but our HS WL Ts focus on summarizing & inferring & we're starting 2 look at vertical alignment of this skill
maybe we should get away from presentations and instead have the presenter be the discussion leader
Right. I understand. They could use sentence starters or even word clouds to help extend thinking.
We do style work: one group presents to another. Grp 2 presents grp 1’s work with additions
I did that, but now as long as they search 'infografia" or "para ninos," they usually find accessible stuff!
Oh I totally agree! But a level 1? Even my best would struggle to lead interpersonal discussion.
It works well when they have questions prepped but present 1st to frontload potential answers!
Might be old hat (Im relatively new), but I feel like we could make a whole spinoff topic on novice teaching strategies
Yay! I bet they feel so good about that!
for us it was more of a progression into more student-direction. Begin: lots of input, very small Q
That would also be a great way to work in some interpersonal talk with classmates!
A3, fused with some A2: I honestly wonder what the "product" looks like at the Novice level. Concrete example, someone?
I think it has to do w/ how we set up discussion too--common goal, different sides/sources
Then they swap w/a partner and continue the thought. It works even in level 1!
so I guess my answer is the essential question starts simple, gradually gains complexity
A3, me too! This whole conversation feels way too wild n' wooly for a MS teacher of French 7 & 8 only.
seem to be doing great! They're pinning to group boards & picking their favorites to interpret! https://t.co/rG6ax15six
I just make hyperlinked docs or use our LMS but Symbaloo is a great resource too! https://t.co/7jUGZgs6La
Jumping in late-I create a Symbaloo with pre-selected resources-Make all the difference when SS go to investigate something
That could really help with the issue of unknown words in presentations at the end! Love it!
I sometimes just post a Pinterest board to Classroom!
a3 examples of effective inquiry questions for novices?
I'm having my novices produce promo videos for our school: intended audience = exchange students
I gather that a Symbaloo bookmarks groups of resources for students?
I so want to do more with wordclouds!
You are welcome! I love the collaborative spirit of !
one of ours was simply S-chosen format to show preparation to discuss pop culture w/TL audience
In TL? Whole sentences and connected? This seems more than Novice
a3: does having students leave book review on Amazon for a book we read in class count?
I can DM. Since a creepy renegade Spanish tchr corrected my Sp1's blogs viciously no more example tweets :(
This is a GREAT idea! Writing for an audience is very powerful
Time flying...Q4 coming at you...
A3 How can sports improve a community?
Our Hebrew Ss created pamphlets to explain our program to incoming Ss- it was awesome! https://t.co/4q32k0AYI6
I'm having my novices produce promo videos for our school: intended audience = exchange students
This really takes me back! A mis estudiantes siempre les encantaban las aventuras de Lola Lago. https://t.co/WmWZxW6JcZ
RIGHT?? I can barely remember when I had to download videos to a thumbdrive if I wanted to show them
A4 If it's something they want to do and are excited about, 99% will stay on target
A4: I haven't done inquiry based as much but I know you have to have specific end goals for each class period
A4 I like daily exit cards for Ss and a chart where I'm tracking daily progress for me (with clipboard)
A4 It's kind of old school, but time limits and deadlines. Keeps the fire lit, if you will.
A4 I’ve had my students write blog posts about their progress each week. Plus we’ve had “business mtgs” where I check in.
A4: Have ss keep a blog of their progress/problems/questions/resources/etc. Share on LMS or school website
A4 I'll say it again: a select few master verbs. They glue questions & answers together, & kids can pick vocab to flesh out
What is the average time grame for a IBL project?
Great idea. Sometimes can still teach us things. Daily accountability important.
Oh yeah. Gotta have a timer!
Keep it of high interest, cognitively engaging, personally relevant.
YouTube lists are my fave for this. I share w/ Ss & embed on LMS. Also allow Ss to add to it.
LOVE this. Having structured "reporting" time works well--We have, we need, we're going to https://t.co/4zTsmfd6jy
A4 I’ve had my students write blog posts about their progress each week. Plus we’ve had “business mtgs” where I check in.
In my upper levels, I’ve given 3 weeks. I’d def cut it down for lower levels.
A4 w/ another Q: Do students stay on task better with explicit goals in IBL? Is a more open format better?
A4 - Exit tickets or tracking progress in a journal can help keep students accountable
me, I go 5-6 weeks, mostly because of how our grading periods break down
in the service of , say I. https://t.co/6xu0EwsIAj
A4 It's kind of old school, but time limits and deadlines. Keeps the fire lit, if you will.
for our novices we're doing 5-6 days - the projects are that small
And I have a doc to keep track of the classes & tasks.
A4: If the Ss are answering a ? they are interested in, they stay on task & go above&beyond
A4 idea from .. Google spread sheet...students track progress and answer questions- Tt can comment back
A4 Time limits can even be really short - 1 min to start with. When the "sound" changes (less focus), then rotate partners.
I would love some examples of projects that you have done. Im so motivated, but I don't know where to start!
A4 the majority of authentic resources are full of distracting, too-high language. Focus Ss on comprehensible key parts
A4: My Ss are off-task when the task is too easy or too hard. If they direct the learning, this might solve the problem
A4-Use tool like to have ss share progress with whole class. Have them take accountability/pride in work & sharing
not just deadlines, but checkpoints--have this this week, that next week
Time for maybe one last Q, ?
We are trying vlogging right now- have you done this w/ Ss?
Thank you! Mine are testing tmrw, so I’ll let you know. But the best thing is to talk to Ss to find out.
I like that focus on preparation for continued progress the next day. I'm going to use that!
I'm still skeptical of novice's ability to direct a lot of their learning
oo yes! is great for getting a quick read of class's progress. I like to share work samples too!
I highlight problems, but give them credit for going through the steps
A5 Um... get a prescribed curriculum that's inquiry-based...?
A5: Dying to know the answer to this!
ABSOLUTELY! They’ll come up with some amazing stuff! https://t.co/7NOs9QSdVx
A4: If the Ss are answering a ? they are interested in, they stay on task & go above&beyond
Learning Management System, i.e. google classroom, moodle, ebackpack
I made kids submit 1 blog + 1 vlog for a project last semester. It was...eh...
A5 I think the only answer I have is to see if you can insert an inquiry-based unit once a semester
A5: Use the prescribed material as ONE of the resources to which Ss can refer. Maybe?
A5 I go rogue and add these units in. :)
No I haven’t. I suggested they do it & post to their blogs, but I’d love to try more. How’s it going?
Having a textbook doesn’t mean you need to follow it page by page ;) Skills =most import & that’s what Ss use in IBL
Hi, Pilar Munday from CT. Just lurking tonight and learning from all of you. Thanks!
The environment is a good one - everybody can relate & lots of resources available
A5 Comes down to teasing the theme out into engaging questions. Why would they NEED that tense/vocab list/etc?
Noted. We have a shiny new iPad thanks to so we may try in house again.
A5: I feel very tied down by curriculum. I am concerned that I wouldn't be able to add IBL and cover everything else.
they mostly just read the same thing they would have written.
This was a FAST hour. Takeaways????
Right?! I always tell mine “This is a SPEAKING test, not a READING test!”
A5: Use textbook as springboard,,, to infinity and beyond!
So far the Ss are pumped @ it. We are doing film noir & nouvelle vague: helps Ss to reflect @ films& discuss in class
Woah, WHAT? This was awesome! I can't wait to dig back in Saturday morning!
A5 thinking about last week's I am trying IBL a bit, but fear judgement & that I am not 'teaching' what Ss need in 5 next year
Ah shoot missed tonight ... Gonna have to look through the archives and participate on sat instead
