I have seen teachers with bad attitudes for students instigate bad behavior. Of course, if you treat me poorly I might do the same.

The more you require your students to memorize in math the less math your students are actually doing.
Truthfully, most kids behave well most of the time. Considering the problems schools have it is pretty amazing.
If students are approached abrasively, they will more inclined to react poorly.

I think that providing context for lessons, clear outcomes, and energy in general can bring a culture of engagement.

In some cases S behavior are indications of a need for further assistance, but engaging instruction should limit behavior issues
I think it isn't an or situation. Both instances are guilty of the result.

I think its all about your relationship with the students, build trust to reduce "acting out." Get to the root of the problem.
When the engagement isn't there, there are more opportunities for tension between the teacher and class.

A good teacher will know how to appropriately discipline their students so it's honestly a combination. Kids will be kids.
Some Ss are dealing w/ things we can even imagine.. they act out, but not always intentionally.

DISCIPLINE necessitates respect for the person being disciplined.
What if it has nothing to do with the teacher(s) and everything to do with what's offered? Cutting music, wood shop, arts, PE, etc.

Even the best teacher (and disciplinarian!) works within a system that largely suppresess kids' naturally active, curious spirits.
How teacher REROUTES behavior is important. Sometimes tchr confuses motivation issues with mishavior.
Exactly. Putting time into lessons, and showing passion about actually teaching students shows respect to them.

I often advise new tchrs to handle their own discipline problems. Too often Admins view a new tchr w/many referrals as a weak tchr.
They are often times some of the most intelligent as well.

Therefore it is hard to be a disciplinarian to students who don't know structure none the less discipline
I think so, If lessons don't reach students they have more time for poor behavior choices.
Maybe kids "act out" because they're bored, and maybe they're bored because education is way too predictable.

Those Ss need opportunities 2 be seen 4 the good attempts they make, not always such negative (esp those tough kiddos!)
Teachers should focus on creating engaging lessons. Leave discipline to admins. No Ts should need to identify as disciplinarian.

Well designed lessons have clear meaningful goals and multiple pathways to reach these.
Kids do tend to target teachers they feel are weak or vulnerable.
Sometimes new Ts benefit from new strategies. How many T Ed programs equip new Ts with enough skill in this arena?
Power Grabbers/attention seekers seek to win control of the invisible baton (power) that tchrs possess.
One theory: Maybe kids "act out" because we started cutting wood shop in the 90s.

Boredom is one reason students misbehave, not the only reason - could also be confusion, problems at home, substance abuse, etc.
Poor lessons almost always lead to disruptive behaviors. If we don’t engage students, they will engage themselves in something else.
Yet once we know Ss, pointed content can be covered deeper.
When I'm guiding the class to more productive states, I don't think of myself as a disciplinarian, I see myself as a skilled leader.
Tchrs need a CLEAR DEFINITION which they teach/sell to students/parents. Makes for successful class.
Do you never give homework, or just specific days of the week? We do no homework Wednesdays. Everyone loves it.

Talk to your Ss and ask them whats going on? Just taking time to talk can go a long way in creating a safe, respectful classroom.

When I accepted this view of a child's nature, It was no longer about me and feeling disrespected.

I start every lesson with WHAT we're learning & WHY we're learning it. It has to be meaningful! No busywork. Ever.
Middle school is hormone heaven/hell. LOL. High schoolers I found can be reasoned with.
new teachers usually get problem Ss other teachers don't want.
Had GREAT mentors to watch, as well as books. Have had great success with Love and Logic, also Responsive Classroom
To be honest, I worry about the kids that don't occasionally rock the boat. Passivity isn't always the thing we want from students.
- Teaching ClassManagement is tough - it's either natural or is put in place one strategy at a time with guidance.
Also create a strong community of respect and kindness

as an admin I would not take that approach. We need to identify why s behavior occurs and support that development

"discipline" can come in many shapes and sizes. It can be more effective to use a compassionate discipline model, work WITH Ss
Show Ss how to fail forward with grace, determination and humor.

I don't think so. It's not fair to the teacher or the student because it doesn't create an inclusive environment.

Yes we have big emphasis on social competency & service learning, and I find that's fostered lots of empathy, positivity.

It is always a good idea to think about the student when you are addressing the behaviors that need to change. They are kids.

Start by providing positive ways for Ss to get to know you and one another.
Sometimes when I get stuck on a culture issue, I brainstorm with the Ss how to solve it and usually we find a way to fix it.

Students should be asked to help develop classroom culture. We are all learners in and co-creators of the space.

it could really be so many things but I think it's essential to establish necessary discipline from the START!

Ts are trainable. It's about adding tools to the kit and in any type of failure there are lessons to be learnt

Kids act differently when they know they are valued. Look them in the eye, really listen to what they say, ask for their input.

Generally it's in our collaboration that we're strong, but no one is the strongest in all areas.
teaching is a state of mind.
Taking the time to sit with each kid and go over their grade at least once a month changed behaviors.
Con-contruction of expectations is key I think. Shared responsibility.

best course i ever took for this was Responsive Classroom. Took it twice 10 years apart. All about community.
Barbershops, rap concerts, black church... all know how and when to reawaken their audience, which we need in the classroom.
