Kelly - AVID Teacher from Laurel, MD. Memorable interaction: LIt club today -Ss who had a horrible day today, still had the strength to stay after school for tutoring and engage in our book tasting. #mdeschat
Rian here from #LaurelHighSchool. I teach Special Education and English 10 Team Lead. My memorable moment from today was knowing that a black male student at ABC (Awesome Books and Cereal) could not put the Book option I brought down. #mdeschat
Hey #mdeschat leaders! Greg- K, #TeamFelegy. Checking in for a moment to say hello. Special choir rehearsal tonight. Hope all are well. Will play catch up later.
Q1: We are at the end of the Q3. If the school year was a race, are you leading the field, in the middle of the pack or sucking wind at the back?
#mdeschat
A1: I think I am in the middle of the pack easing closer to leading the field! Paperwork in Special Education sometimes takes away from collaborative planning! #mdeschat

A1 Middle of the pack, for sure. It's a marathon, not a sprint though. Got observed 3x today and no A/C, air circulation 10th period. It was not bueno. #mdeschat

HI #mdeschat! Bonnie, 4th grade. I got a huge hug from a student in my after school PARCC prep club and she told me she loves our math in the afternoons. ❤️
A1 I think I’m in the middle. Towards the front of the middle group. Student teachers are in full takeover so that’s a nice little water break in the race. #mdeschat

Hi! Little late. Steve from Laurel, MD. Got a chance today to talk to a student about how scared he is that his dad might have cancer. He’s not okay, but he’s letting me into his world for the first time. I’ll just be there. #mdeschat
A2: One big fat goal is assisting the AVID Ss w/ reversing the trend toward academic attrition as the school year progresses. Developing academic stamina. #mdeschat
A2: Help my Ss build a sense of urgency to stay engaged in learning- HOW: sharing graduation requirements and providing positive feedback when the are engaged in their own learning process. #mdeschat
A2 Working with new teachers and listening to them advocate for themselves and their students today made me so proud. We are stronger together and when we refuse to stay silent. #mdeschat
Q2: seeing how much my students have progressed since the start of the tear and making sure they keep that progress going keeps me very motivated. #mdeschat
A3 I’m having the opposite problem. I have ss who traditionally haven’t had great school experiences, but I work and work and work so they do and the back slide is starting. #mdeschat
A2: seeing how much my students have progressed since the start of the tear and making sure they keep that progress going keeps me very motivated. #mdeschat
A3 I really try to take it one day at a time, but also openly acknowledge the "elephant in the room" e.g. no A/C, prom distractions, concerns about graduation. #mdeschat
A2b: My PLN keeps me juiced. Don't want to disappoint. Also, the thought that "I 'was that ______ (fill inthe blank) child "when I was 11-14 y/o. Trying to be the teacher I had during this time. #mdeschat
A2 Not so much inspiration, but often just listening and assuming they are capable goes a long way. We can loan Ss confidence until they acquire their own. #mdeschat
A3: Resetting each day with them, sometimes multiple time per day. Acknowledging their hurt, frustration, fears and offering to assist where I can. Catching them winning #mdeschat
A4 I thought this just happened to me! I’m learning that sometimes less is more, that we all need a break. Longer recess, day of brain teasers, yoga every now and then keeps us more sane than increased test prep. #mdeschat
A4: Harder nut to crack. I think a key is making sure students completely understand how their grades work and how their work impacts these grades #mdeschat
A4: Consistent instruction! How can we organize the testing schedule to ensure that testing is not taking away from instruction? NOTE: Testing is different than Assessments #mdeschat
A4. Ensure alignment bw instruction & assessment, data analysis at the S lvl to drill down to support & strategies needed for improvement, on-going PD for staff to support goals #mdeschat
A4: being more intentional about targeted interventions (schoolwide and student level) much earlier in the year. Focusing more on growth and success mindset/habits as opposed to final grades. #mdeschat
A5: Cannot say enough about this. Started w/ @cultofpedagogy#marigold article about two years ago. Bunch of Ts at our school read it and rolled up our sleeves and determined we were gonna be difference makers DAILY.#mdeschat
A5b: Helps when you enjoy working WITH one another. My PLN brings resources and challenges my thinking. We are at #NoLookPassLevel now, but it took time and trust #mdeschat
