Rian here from #LaurelHighSchool. I teach Special Education and English 10 Team Lead. My memorable moment from today was knowing that a black male student at ABC (Awesome Books and Cereal) could not put the Book option I brought down. #mdeschat

Q1: We are at the end of the Q3. If the school year was a race, are you leading the field, in the middle of the pack or sucking wind at the back? #mdeschat
  • juliaerin80 Mar 15 @ 8:11 PM EDT
Success smells sweet, doesn't it? #mdeschat

A1: I think I am in the middle of the pack easing closer to leading the field! Paperwork in Special Education sometimes takes away from collaborative planning! #mdeschat

A1 Middle of the pack, for sure. It's a marathon, not a sprint though. Got observed 3x today and no A/C, air circulation 10th period. It was not bueno. #mdeschat

  • BonnieRaz Mar 15 @ 8:14 PM EDT
HI #mdeschat! Bonnie, 4th grade. I got a huge hug from a student in my after school PARCC prep club and she told me she loves our math in the afternoons. ❤️

A1 I think I’m in the middle. Towards the front of the middle group. Student teachers are in full takeover so that’s a nice little water break in the race. #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:15 PM EDT
    :) This is exciting! #mdeschat :)

Hi! Little late. Steve from Laurel, MD. Got a chance today to talk to a student about how scared he is that his dad might have cancer. He’s not okay, but he’s letting me into his world for the first time. I’ll just be there. #mdeschat

  • DeniseFaidley Mar 15 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A1 Middle of pack, gaining momentum and seeing benefits of PD and supports #mdeschat
  • stpmellen Mar 15 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A2: this time of the year I’m always thinking ahead to next year already. Makes me think about possibilities and keeps me motivated. #mdeschat
  • DingleTeach Mar 15 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A1 Sorry I’m late. Proud middle-of-the-pack-er here. Been through challenges, but will never quit. #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2: One big fat goal is assisting the AVID Ss w/ reversing the trend toward academic attrition as the school year progresses. Developing academic stamina. #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A2: Help my Ss build a sense of urgency to stay engaged in learning- HOW: sharing graduation requirements and providing positive feedback when the are engaged in their own learning process. #mdeschat
  • DeniseFaidley Mar 15 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2. Efforts of staff, Ss progress and reaching goals, and the Crew spirit w/in the school. We're in it together. #mdeschat

    Q3, coming up shortly... #mdeschat
  • DingleTeach Mar 15 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A2 Working with new teachers and listening to them advocate for themselves and their students today made me so proud. We are stronger together and when we refuse to stay silent. #mdeschat
  • BonnieRaz Mar 15 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A2 Mentoring! You have to stay strong and motivated when you have such an important role. Plus my ss have so much left to learn! #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:25 PM EDT

Q2: seeing how much my students have progressed since the start of the tear and making sure they keep that progress going keeps me very motivated. #mdeschat
    In reply to @kscottburgess
  • BonnieRaz Mar 15 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3 I’m having the opposite problem. I have ss who traditionally haven’t had great school experiences, but I work and work and work so they do and the back slide is starting. #mdeschat
  • reinaag Mar 15 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A2: seeing how much my students have progressed since the start of the tear and making sure they keep that progress going keeps me very motivated. #mdeschat
  • juliaerin80 Mar 15 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3 I really try to take it one day at a time, but also openly acknowledge the "elephant in the room" e.g. no A/C, prom distractions, concerns about graduation. #mdeschat
    • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q3: How do you inspire students, for whom school has not been a positive experience so far, to regain their stride and finish strong? #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A2b: My PLN keeps me juiced. Don't want to disappoint. Also, the thought that "I 'was that ______ (fill inthe blank) child "when I was 11-14 y/o. Trying to be the teacher I had during this time. #mdeschat
  • DeniseFaidley Mar 15 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3. Find ways to celebrate small successes or effort. Find ways to help Ss become leaders, tap into interests and build relationships #mdeschat
  • stpmellen Mar 15 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: First listen. Then listen more. Just be there. #mdeschat
  • DingleTeach Mar 15 @ 8:31 PM EDT
A2 Not so much inspiration, but often just listening and assuming they are capable goes a long way. We can loan Ss confidence until they acquire their own. #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A3: One-on-One chats! Building relationships is an ongoing process! #mdeschat
    • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:27 PM EDT

  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:32 PM EDT
@stpmellen and I had a principal a while back. Favotive mantra: "The 4th Quarter is the start of the next year" We live by that truth #mdeschat

  • BonnieRaz Mar 15 @ 8:34 PM EDT
    Awesome ideas here! #mdeschat #takingnotes
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A3: Resetting each day with them, sometimes multiple time per day. Acknowledging their hurt, frustration, fears and offering to assist where I can. Catching them winning #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:36 PM EDT
So good to have you here Marian! I love that phrase "loan them confidence" Priceless. #mdeschat

  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:39 PM EDT
    ooops Q4! #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Q4: There is a trend for academic achievement to dip Q2 and Q3. What can schools do to reverse this pattern? #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:42 PM EDT
Question 4 is up! #mdeschat Join in!
  • DingleTeach Mar 15 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A4 I thought this just happened to me! I’m learning that sometimes less is more, that we all need a break. Longer recess, day of brain teasers, yoga every now and then keeps us more sane than increased test prep. #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:44 PM EDT
Q4: There is a trend for academic achievement to dip Q2 and Q3. What can schools do to reverse this pattern? #mdeschat
  • stpmellen Mar 15 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A4: Harder nut to crack. I think a key is making sure students completely understand how their grades work and how their work impacts these grades #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A4: Consistent instruction! How can we organize the testing schedule to ensure that testing is not taking away from instruction? NOTE: Testing is different than Assessments #mdeschat
  • DeniseFaidley Mar 15 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A4. Ensure alignment bw instruction & assessment, data analysis at the S lvl to drill down to support & strategies needed for improvement, on-going PD for staff to support goals #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4: being more intentional about targeted interventions (schoolwide and student level) much earlier in the year. Focusing more on growth and success mindset/habits as opposed to final grades. #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A4b: Much tighter relationships with the household earlier in the year too. Looking for innovative ways to address Ss needs across contents. #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:50 PM EDT
Great input on Q4 everyone. I am learning a lot from this brainstrust #mdeschat
  • stpmellen Mar 15 @ 8:50 PM EDT
    A4: Stronger Relationships. #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:51 PM EDT
Q5: How does your PLN assist you with finishing strong? #mdeschat
  • stpmellen Mar 15 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A5: well, THIS PLN energized me! I can’t wait for Thursday evenings anymore. #mdeschat
  • DeniseFaidley Mar 15 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A5 innovative ideas, reflective thoughts that provide diverse perspectives, & laughter when needed #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:54 PM EDT
Question 4 is definitely a post you should re-read and retweet! #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A5: Cannot say enough about this. Started w/ @cultofpedagogy #marigold article about two years ago. Bunch of Ts at our school read it and rolled up our sleeves and determined we were gonna be difference makers DAILY.#mdeschat
  • DingleTeach Mar 15 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A5 So thankful my PLN is growing with more and more I can learn from and with. Constant source of encouragement and possibility! #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A5b: Helps when you enjoy working WITH one another. My PLN brings resources and challenges my thinking. We are at #NoLookPassLevel now, but it took time and trust #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:56 PM EDT
A5: My PLN is an idea powerhouse to keep my instruction innovative! They also send positive vibes my way! #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:57 PM EDT
I could go on about the PLN all night...just two more quick Qs... #mdeschat
  • kscottburgess Mar 15 @ 8:58 PM EDT
Q6: If your Principal or Dept Head came to you and asked "What can I do to help you in Q4?" how would you respond? #mdeschat
  • missreed - Moderator Mar 15 @ 8:59 PM EDT
#mdeschat is going into overtime tonight! Can't wait to engage in the remainder of the questions!
