Tonight we are talking engaging parents in our schools.
-
Q1: What does parent involvement look like in your school?
-
A1: I try to increase parent volunteers and involve parents in their children's education.
-
-
A1: I started at my school to invite Dads onto my campus as parent volunteers. Very successful.
-
A1: I also started bi-weekly math classes for parents and students to provide content and strategies for parents.
-
A1: We had very little when I arrived outside boosters. Have spent the year building parent voice.
-
Q2: How do you use technology to engage your parents?
-
BCPS launched Parent University 4 years ago. All is online, but provides an avenue for learning.
-
A2: Weekly emails to parents for upcoming week. Next year adding quarterly video newsletter and podcast.
-
-
-
I think the power of our P U is parents being taught by the students' teachers focusing on upcoming content so parents can help.
-
A2: I send emails, text messages and phone calls home with upcoming events. Also Twitter and our website with video announcements.
-
Q3: Where would you like to see greater parent involvement in your school?
-
A3: I would like to see parents take a greater voice in improving our schools. Parents are more than just fundraisers.
-
Q4: What barriers stand in the way of parents becoming more involved in your school?
-
A4: Biggest barrier is that many parents do not have a fond memory of school. Need to work to change the mental narrative.
-
A3: I'd love to see more parent involvement in supporting students with mental health issues.
-
A4: Perception that our school doesn't want their help. Listening to and feeding into negativity
-
Q5: How can you work, beginning tomorrow, to increase parent voice in your school?
-
A5: Continue engaging, listening, honoring, and responding.
-
Thanks for joining tonight. Be better every day in every way - our students deserve it.
