We went 2 Denver for MIE forum and then a short vacation to Pike's Peak and Rocky Mountain National Park. Remodeling kitchen now

Q2a: How long before school starts for you?
Q2b: What have you been doing to prep for this coming year.
A2a: August 15th, same day I close on a house. It's going to be crazy.
A1 I've been to Florida to see my son and to NY twice to get my daughter settled in for grad school at syracuse.
Q2. I am all year around and have been doing a lot of reading and trainings
A2b: I have so many things I want to do, but not enough hours in the day. I have been pinning ideas on Pinterest though.
Q2a: A little over a month....
Q2b: Doing pacing and setting up first 3 weeks of school
A2: two weeks! I've been doing lots of planning and research!
A2: Less than 6 weeks before teachers officially go back. I've been working on math pacing for 2 grade levels.
A2a 8/2 1st T day
A2b been to a few PDs. New school so moving into new classroom.
Two weeks! Year round school?
A2: Also working on three PD sessions to present first week back.
A2a 5-6 weeks
A2b reading like crazy lots of good titles. Trying to improve myself and narrow my focus to best help teachers
A2a: August 11. Teachers go back on the 2nd, though. I want to set up routines and plan assessments for the first few months.
A2a. Schools starts in two months A2b. Been prepping, reflecting, consistent PD with my APs/support staff. Having honest convos
Q2 follow-up. What are your principals doing. I know you are out there.
A2a: I go back 8/1. Kids start 8/17.
A2b: I've been thinking about what is inspiring that can start and last the whole year.
A1: Lots of PD on ICT integration. Preparing to use iPads in literacy instruction. A2: T-minus 5 weeks. Yikes!
charter school runs on a different schedule. Starts sooner. Aug 17th is the normal school calendar.
Hello everyone in land! *sneaking in late and sitting in the back row.*
Sounds like many of you get to go ahead of your kids, I have 2 days between when I am required back and the kiddos start.
A2- went to the model schools conference in Orlando! Just finished the book Moving Beyond Quadrant A- so good!
Wow!! That doesn't seem like enough time to get everything done. We have 7 days before Ss this year.
constant PD/conferences/reflection. Driving my support staff crazy.
Michele...from Ontario but spending the summer in Newfoundland. I'm reading and learning about assessment.
Join us, there are no back seats in
We have a "week" before. Ss start Tuesday after Labor day.
It isn't! Thankfully I was allowed to leave most of my stuff up last year.
A2B: As part of my Grad program class that I'm currently in, I have been working hard to expand my PLN.
Q2: follow up...mine is working right along with us. She has been helping with pacing along with her other duties!
Just started summer break...I go back in 9 weeks.
That's nice. Are you at least allowed back earlier if you choose to come in?
Yes, though my wedding is 7/30 and I close on a home 8/15 so I am super busy.
Most of our days are optional. I'm going so I can get paid.
Q2 follow up- that's me! I've been "off" about 3 weeks:) reading and prepping. I head back on July 26th. Going to try chillin'
Q3T: Are you thinking of changing your classroom design?
Q3P: How will are you to let your T's change their classroom design?
We do have a couple days of optional training the week before we go back.
A2 follow up, we're working hard Dave
A3: I definitely want to focus more on what the classroom looks like this year, since I'm staying in the same grade level
drove by SJV the other day. Didn't know if your were in or not.
Q3T I'm changing schools. Last year I taught ENL and this year 3rd so big changes!
A3: Not a T or P but I do encourage teachers to think differently about classroom design. Encouraging flexible seating.
Q3T: Yes!! I am going deskless. Trying to find cheap alternative seating. Need to rethink classroom set up.Open to suggestions
A3: I am thinking of swapping things around but my room is so tiny, I'm left with few options.
A3T: The admin building is actually being remodeled right now!
A3P: Ts in the Re-Imagining Learning Cohorts are redesigning.
A3P. Trying to encourage instructional risks for our Ts. I am thinking of having contests for most innovative class designs
I'm going to use more self and peer assessment.
Considering trying alternative seating. I have K Ss tipping chairs over all the time.
Q3- I hope that we will all study together this year to create more engaging instruction. We have new MAand ELA curric this year
That sounds like a fun challenge.
A3: I changed my room last year, but I have a fluid design. We move tables and chairs as needed. Students move them frequently.
Deep understanding of learning environment, pedagogy & authentic assessment help make classroom design effective.
don't be too quiet in the back room. You might get called on.
forgot you were a history teacher. :-)
Q4: Do you do any self directed PD that you can get credit for in your district? Does your district allow it?
A4: I am taking a course requiring us to use Social Media for PD, not sure if I can get any credit for it from district though
I am toying with flipping my classroom this year. At least for one unit.
A4. Yes, MOOCs and we can get credit as long as we upload the completion certificate.
That's the best way to flip. Start small.
A4: Yes, as long as the PD is tied to my professional learning goals. I like to do mostly math & science leadership PD.
Q4 I'm not sure but I think they would be supportive of it. Some people are doing online book studies through our state DOE.
My division encourages this. I take full advantage of it
I haven't formally decided but my P is VERY supportive. Have a book in mind tho!
Our district is trying it out for one PD day this year. One in the summer will count for one in the school year.
A4: What do you mean by "get credit." CA doesn't require proof of PD anymore.
Are your teachers allowed to too?
A4: Professional conferences & publishing in a professional journal is as close to self directed PD I can get for credit
We heard that at a forum that I was at in Denver. Any reason CA doesn't care about PD anymore?
A4 part 2 My district offers so much pd that I honestly have not thought of it. Great idea though.
Q4: Our district has offered a few book studies that we can take part in.
Yes- PD in the district is pretty self-directed, but aligned to district vision.
Do you get the personalize your PD since they have so many offerings?
CA assumes that teachers are getting all the PD they need through their districts.
It varies by district/contract. Our Ts can get paid for PD or units.
A3 Prof Susan in IL back with tonight. Wish we could design classroo.s at univ ... Labs are great. Most other rooms sterile.
Q5: What is one thing you really want to do or try this school year?
A5: Get more parent involvement. I have had little to none in the last 2 years.
I do, yes. I'm a highly motivated lifelong learner & see all PD as a learning opp.
probably since so many diff profs use them
A5 more intentional teaching of metacognitive strategies. Integration of 's FIT teaching.
A5: I really want to incorporation more GAFE and more math stations that promote creative and critical thinking.
A5: I want to do more with content area eReading. I learned that Ss need extra practice in this area. https://t.co/wxKNFwoOpc
I am excited to integrate a coding assignment into my physical science class. Students could use Tynker to create simulations.
many think teachers don't do anything but they do
A5: Still thinking about that, but probably something schoolwide around NGSS.
A5: I want my students to take ownershi. I want my classroom to be more open/fluid. Not sure what that looks like yet.
A5 Emphasize social responsibility more. Assign univ students to contribute/improve wikipedia page in an area of their learning.
A5 Get more colleagues to use Twitter for professional growth, use Number Talks in my math classes, advocate for PL
A5 oh yeah and I really want to hit my observation goals to help support teachers
A5. Effective student surveys that drive programming
A5 This is my 1st year teaching 3rd so improving and strengthening my reading instruction is my focus.
Yes, exactly. BUT could schedule select rooms to depts to outfit them for heightened learning ...
https://t.co/wz1bqTMPKU
probably since so many diff profs use them
it's hard to have parents involved in their child's life
Yes, it is. Especially in a school where most students are bussed and there is a language barrier.
Q6: What one thing would you like to do for yourself before school starts. Plus Jill's topic will drop at 8:55.
thats our struggle too https://t.co/OllNgiVjd4
Yes, it is. Especially in a school where most students are bussed and there is a language barrier.
A5 as a grad student Twitter is apart of my curriculum internet usage is recommended
A6: I am going to Disneyland 2 weeks from tomorrow, looking forward to that. And try to relax a bit.
A6. Going to conf in July. Hope to learn as much as possible and collaborate from those in attendance.
A6: I want to go to the beach for some self-care and relaxation. Nature's tech can do wonders for the mind and body.
Q6: Because i cant answer that question..that tells me my answer.
I like how they allow for all types of thinking to get into the conversation, so important.
A6 not Ed related: go back East and see family. Run a race well.
your hard work goes goes unseen in my eyes
A6: It's already planned....Vegas! π²ππ²ππ²
A6: I want to get my house organized before school starts.
but how do do their parents understand FB?
A6 I would β€ a day @ the pool but I don't think that is going 2 happen. I've had a good summer w/ lots of traveling so it's ok.
Remember us if you win big! ;-)
A6: Before school starts, I would like to spend one week doing nothing but reflecting on what I've learned this far.
yes! Creating unity & clarity
Join next week as we discuss: Education Podcasts w/ & I.
Bradley University in Peoria.
A6: I also would like to hang out at the movie theatre and see all of the big blockbuster special effect movies.
Thanks for a great chat everyone. and I can't do it without you. Alway feel free to carry on after we are done
Can't wait for the new Jason Bourne at the end of the month.
Looking forward to a big fishing trip in northern Minnesota.
It's also nice because it gets the answer "out of the way" to allow for deep discourse on student thinking.
Remember all you grad Ss and readers you have to go out an play now. Get some fresh air in those lungs.
I will try to stop by before school starts.
Thank you and for hosting an awesome https://t.co/Ovn2slx4A6
