#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
A1 I’ve started to ask the older kids to talk to each other when I pose q’s, not me. When they look only at me it isolates the rest of the class as observers and doesn’t engage them as participants. It is a small way I’m trying to grow empathy. #K12ArtChat
A1: I'm teaching #digcit to develop good digital citizens, you should behave online the way you do in real life.
I had 5th gr students all excited about posting their work to Instagram today! Feel free to comment @SSESartists on Instagram #K12artchat
Great suggestion! I agree... students don't know how much thought goes into pairing up groups and why group work is highlighted in class! Thoughtful! #k12artchat

A1: demonstrating conversation skills, talking and interacting with students. Starting conversations at tables that are not talking. We have an ongoing conversation about kindness. #k12artchat
A2: it’s important to be intentional with the artwork you show and discuss in class. All people make art- not just those who end up in textbooks! #CobbArtRocks#k12artchat
#k12artchat A2: it's important our Ss see and connect with artists, authors, inventors and innovators of all ages, races and backgrounds. People who look like them.

A1: we create collaboratively a lot, lots of practice face to face with positive feedback so it’s not just from me, especially digitally like on Creatubbles and Instagram #K12ArtChat
A2: Perhaps we can extend the diversity of different artworks into the different backgrounds of people.
In art there isn't one correct answer, in people there isn't one correct type either... am I making sense? #K12artchat
A2 invite artists in to share their process. I have 3 artists in currently. Today 1 created spoken word poetry to inspire our artmaking, w/the line “I come from...” to begin each stanza. Helps to begin by appreciating the many paths we all take to arrive where we are #K12ArtChat
A2: I'm fortunate to teach Art History as well. My students love learning about the art of different cultures and religions, always eye opening to them
#K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A3: Choose Kind. Have you all seen Wonder yet? Love the idea of having a quarterly quote or idea to pursue in our lives and with others. Perfect for building empathy.
A3: I teach at a very diverse, low income school and I’m always searching for new inspiration but I encourage them to inspire themselves! Discover artists that reflect you physically, mentally, creatively and see where it takes you! #K12ArtChat

#k12artchat "Often we create to make sense of the world around us. We want to understand why things happen so we write, draw, sculpt, compose, choreograph, or dramatize and in doing so we explore why we humans do what we do." https://t.co/uLPZoQSzB7

A1: today our HS Ss docented a field trip for 3rd graders through our collection of TX art. Ss modeling service behavior for other Ss. No adults intervening. #k12ArtChat
A3) Not sure these are the only metrics in our culture (it can seem that way), but the arts--and especially books and movies--help us all empathize with others. #k12artchat
A4: One of the ways that our principal, @KariSampson17 is encouraging @PrairieViewEMS staff is to do a Kindness Challenge. #k12artchat Join along if you would like!
#K12ArtChat Last night I hosted Arts Reveal Night it was an evening when my students volunteer to share their journey in the studio to a public audience. Powerful!

@Artguy76 & @MiniMatisse have this chat rolling! Our little girls are ready for bedtime stories so I have to check out early! Good Night All! Have a great week! #K12ArtChat
A2) Avoid approaching everything with a me-centric perspective. Identify our own culture within a larger picture--that there are certain things we share and others we don't. #K12ArtChat
#k12artchat A4: encourage and practice observation skills. Challenge students to actively look for needs in the community that they can help serve. Then develop a project that can be used to address those needs.
Students will be participating in a program called JoyBots! The idea is to make a bot and share it with someone who needs it! It’s going to go school wide! Spread Joy! Check it out at https://t.co/CPO3DQjAql#K12ArtChat
A5: If you listen carefully in your classroom, there are easy ways to interject kind words & highlight the caring things kids do everyday! Be aware, be positive, be intentional. #K12ArtChat
A2: the lessons I have been working on this year have really been helpful in this area. We have been focusing on how your culture affects your art & how you make an impact on your community w/ your art. #K12ArtChat
A5 everyday. today I was talking @ sharing our artwork & discussing 2 common obstacles. Peers & fears. Anxious @ peer response 2 our creative minds. And fear of being wrong. We try & create a safe & brave space for creative growth. Culture of kindness/respect/empathy #k12ArtChat

A1) I share experiences/challenges/successes from MY middle school days - it’s a hard stage for everyone! This makes me seem more “human” to my students & helps me empathize with the extreme changes they are going through. #K12ArtChat
TY Nic. This was a show I put together & was on display at our District office! #K12ArtChat lots of great feedback from Parents & people who work in building!
It's not about avoiding complex conversations; it's about engaging in respectful, productive dialogue. Online participation matters. Critical skill for Ts and Ss. #digcit
A4: I am planning out some lesson ideas w/ @NorvaNivelUS abt concepts for designing furniture in small spaces. Plus working w/ my 4th gr team to create some @HamiltonMusical inspired poetry raps abt themselves. Self Perspective. #K12ArtChat
The @theartofed podcast episode “No More Dead White Guys” comes to mind! Artist examples from various backgrounds & steering clear of projects based on cultural appropriation #k12artchat
#k12artchat v late to the party, but A1 - I agree with @shinebrite71 about collaboration. Walking through what collaboration looks like and what the challenges will be and steps to work through those.

Thanks for a great chat! Definitely have to look back and take some notes! I’ve got to a bit more work done tonight... @MiniMatisse@k12artchat#k12artchat
A4 - I have never done a service project but have wanted to 😳 The most meaningful projects/outcomes seem to come from student generated ideas. #k12artchat
A4) We did a choice-based project w/ the driving question: “Can art make a difference?” Here is an 8th grade example of politicians from both sides polluting the air with their debate w/ no action on climate change. #k12artchat
