The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Yep. And paperwork not filled out and my next day where I get some preparation time is probably next Thursday... and then people wonder why we take work home #bfc530
Oh I totally will..it will completely freak them out. Lol #bfc530 Our spring doesn’t start until the end of March..I am actually surprised our seasons don’t line up in the opposite way.
Good morning! Taking advantage of one more morning of mild, calm weather. Heading out for another run now. We’re expecting heavy snow tonight. I know I was kidding myself thinking we would quietly (and quickly) slide into spring. 😄😄😄 ❄️❄️❄️#bfc530

We don't have in hs, but Ss and I have crafted emails together. As part of #LATIC authentic units, parents are certainly an option for sharing work. #bfc530
Great question! We have mid-semester e-portfolio reviews that the students lead by presenting to a group of teachers, other students, and parents (including their own). It's SO much better than the old P/T/S conference! #bfc530
Happy March! and Happy Thursday! Starting some poetry today - going to play "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and then analyze. After that, Billy Joel's "Allentown". Hope they enjoy seeing how songs are poems set to music! #bfc530
A: we try and have the S in all parent / teacher conferences. I encourage the S to air any grievances in front of us all. I then ask what we all can do to make the S more successful. It seems beneficial to me. #bfc530
A school, its students, its staff... it’s all about community, isn’t it? In what ways are you fostering and nurturing your community through all of the work you do? @gcouros might have said it best in his book #InnovatorsMindset :
Student-led conferences are not something we are involved in at present...but I'm intrigued how this works at the high school level.
Perspective? #bfc530
We only have one conference scheduled a year. We did a student lead conference in 5th grade once, and most students were not well prepared, so it was awkward. I spent most of my time promoting things we did so students would talk. #bfc530
"In the Northern Hemisphere, the meteorological beginning of spring occurs on the first day of March"-not exactly sure what that means but sounds good Donne! Happy meteorological spring everyone! #bfc530
At our school we have a portfolio night where parents are invited to come in and check out their kid’s work ... kids explaining what they are doing. #bfc530
I haven’t had to do conferences in Media, but if I did, I would have the student share their work and talk about what is going well (mastery) and what they are working on to master. #bfc530
Students attend their family conferences. The values-based portfolio becomes a springboard for a collaborative conversation about empowering the student. #bfc530
Read how to ask questions that help students notice how their behaviors match their values—rather than telling them how their behaviors match ours—and choose for themselves what they want to do next: https://t.co/L3AOzQmoyf@LaurenPorosoff#studentengagement
Holy cow...I’ve been tossing since then, but kept falling back to sleep. I pulled some muscles at water aerobics last night. I’m walking like my feet aren’t attached to my legs. #bfc530

I will spend the week before having the students prepare and gather information. I am hoping to have a script for them as well. It is hard to try something so different so fingers crossed! #bfc530
Have a conversation with the student prior to the meeting, talk about the points to be covered, let them ntroduce their parents and listen to what they have to say, they are the reason for the meeting! #bfc530
We actually stopped doing it for a time last year and our alums came back to tell us we had to bring it back . Their reason? It was too important a process for them to develop skills they needed in college and the real world for us to drop it. #bfc530
The rest of us don’t use that term, and in New England spring is a magical and rare creature anyway, like a unicorn that gallops in between weeks and weeks of cold rain and mud for a day and leaves blistering heat in its wake. #bfc530
Our students are not involved in the current P/T conference structure. Have thought about it, but run into logistic, buy-in, and meaningfullness issues. #bfc530
Before the P/T night I have Ss analyse their evidence record to find which expectations they are strong & weak in. Also self-assess their learning skills.
Then at P/T night I can turn to the student & say "tell us..." to get the conversation started.
#bfc530
Yeah, I’m thinking it requires a lot of prep. A friend of mine did it beautifully with her 1st graders. She spent a lot of time w/each kid discussing their performance. They could always tell you where they were & what they were doing to get to the next level. #bfc530
Love this question. We are just starting student led conferences using portfolios & we're struggling with how to organize it in secondary. In elementary (1 T, 1 S) it's easier. #bfc530
We do that with art and technology each year. More like a showcase. I jumped in last year with my gamers. Kids love to show their work to their families:)

Some Ts at my school have their advisees lead the conferences, but few kids can speak about academic struggles in front of their parents and advisor. So some Ts have the student prepare a slideshow or speech, but then it’s not an authentic conversation. #bfc530

I’m trying to prepare myself. I always want sunny, warm days in April and May but the disappointment can be soul crushing when mud season is gray and bleak. Also, no coffee in the house today. #bfc530

DM me Brian and I can send you a link to all our protocols and rubrics. We've iterated the process for ~7 years now and have it down to a well-oiled process. The parents love seeing their children do real "public speaking" as well! #bfc530
It is in a singular location divided into two nights at two different times of the year ... Sem 1/2 ... one focuses on Science/Math other one ELA/SocialStudies ... no classrooms just kids + Parent +portfolio #bfc530
We do 3 progress reports; 3 report cards; Parent Orientation, Open House, fall and spring conferences. This is before extras like Art Show, International celebration etc #bfc530
When I taught middle school we did. We had two sets; one in November and one in February. We always had the student come and talk but we were not at the point where they were student led. #bfc530
I have mixed feelings ... low turnout in middle school ... great concept but many don’t take advantage ... free food can’t get them through the door. #bfc530
We are implementing them next year. One might imagine we’d be working towards it this year, but one would be incorrect. Many competing agendas instead. #bfc530

Kathleen, I remember so well. I’ve been in NC for 13 years. I still feel like I’m cheating during winter. Last night I swam and came out of the gym with sweats on. I thought up North I would have needed heavy coat, too. #bfc530

@deem_ellen Pic of Darling Harbour in Sydney! One of the must visit places, lots to do it is off Sydney Harbour, around the corner from the Sydney Harbour Bridge! #bfc530#VisitAustralia
We have a sign-up for slots over a 2-week period. 3-4 students per session covered by at least 2 teachers to facilitate. Students do a ~8 minute review of each class and their projects, highlighting artifacts. We then debrief/Q&A each at the end. #bfc530
My daughter led her own 5th grade conference and it was powerful to see what she had picked for her portfolio and for her to talk about what she wanted to work on. I just wish there was another conference past November. It seems so early! #bfc530
At the end of this year, we're piloting this with Ts who are on board. We'll learn what we can from it and then implement school wide next year. #bfc530

We’ve had some glorious days lately, warm and fragrant, but we can’t let our guards down yet. I sort of love that about us. Flinty New Englanders, always skeptical. #bfc530

Our Ps come in to get progress reports each trimester and have a 20 minute meeting with the homeroom teacher. Having Ss there with portfolios should make this so much more meaningful. #bfc530
Glad to David! Glad to share what we've done with anyone it will help. Just shoot me a DM and I'll compile all the links together. #bfc530 The power of #opensourcelearning!
Between the entire team we saw everyone at least once. I did not see every parent though. There were times where we did team conferences if the child’s needs warranted that intervention. #bfc530
I am at a K8 school ... K5 parents are in there for everything ... their kid hits 6th grade they disappear. Has similar phenomena when I was at a 6-12 school ... MS parent there for everything their kid hit 9th ... they’re gone. #bfc530
It's admittedly a lot of work. But seeing how they grow over the years in confidence of speaking to a group of adult strangers makes it all worth it! (I get emotional just thinking about it). #bfc530
Yes, it’s DEFCON 10 around here today. I had no idea, but the new bag of coffee is whole bean, no grinder anymore, someone (cough cough) forgot to grind it at the store. #bfc530

One year, for student led conferences, we co-created a checklist. This included introducing the parent to me, taking the parent to their seat in the classroom and beginning the conference with some highlights of student strengths and ending with next steps.#bfc530
School stopped the practice as a whole ... many parents not in attendance and students were presenting to teachers. Parent engagement was key to its success about a dozen years ago. #bfc530
I’ve loved SLCs for awhile now. Some students in middle grades had only been present at conferences to hear adults speak to each other before their first SLC. I used choice menus so that I could do 4 at a time in my room. #bfc530
Our choices always had to include: something the student was proud of, working a current math problem, and goal setting with parents right then before leaving. #bfc530

These are designated nights/days where we have all parents come in. They sign up for a time at first and then we reach out if they don’t. We also did them by request if needed. #bfc530
This sounds amazing! Do these happen during the school day? We're trying to figure out how to do this next year and I'm looking for different models. #bfc530
Yes, although i love an in person conference...it may be possible to get more participation virtually. We can even call in for doctor visits now—seems like some of those same options should be available at school. #bfc530
A: Because my Ss are younger, I had them record on @WeVideo and share with parents, telling about their strengths and opportunities for growth. It was a less intimidating way for them to talk to their parents about school. #bfc530

Sounds very interesting. Would be especially great for kids whose parents seldom attend or able to attend. Ss still get to validate learning #bfc530 Wonder how that would work in #SiglerNation#siglerlearns ?

I used to do them. Ts have rubrics for areas of class. As compile work that can be shown to Ps to define how they’re doing and explain next steps. Good idea. Does take a longer conference time than many places have, though. #bfc530
Omg. Love all of this! I have PT conferences tonight. Trying to show projects and reflection sheets to start. Those of you who do true SLC, what times of the day work best? Do parents and students sign up to schedule still? #bfc530
I have seen them effective when Ss and Ts prepare ahead of time. Ya need to guide the Ss reflection in writing so they focus on both current levels of performance as well as realistic goal setting. #bfc530
Morning, #bfc530. Last week was my school's 2nd go-'round w/student-led conferences. Prep Ss w/slide deck (1 slide per class w/talking points). 1 grade level w/ 4 stations per room. 30-minute slots. Teachers float & can be flagged down by families to drill deeper. 1/2
Given conference prep for all students, I ask those who choose not to attend f2f after school to chat about class w/family at home. Then, either email me how it went or record it via Flipgrid to share my way. #bfc530 2/2 Sample slide below:
I've been in cattle-call situations where families line up for 5-min convos & float from teacher to teacher in cafeteria. Also been in scheduled settings, both 10-min traditional T-led & 30-min S-led conferences. I like the last the most. Always 3:30-6:30 window. #bfc530
