A1: As middle school teachers, we see our students eager to write more than ever, just in slightly altered (digital) platforms #edsurgechat
  • iamvlewis Nov 7 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: Ss writing has declined but cell phone text messages may be more to blame. #Edsurgechat

It seems like my writing friends are committed to long form, my former students not so much… #EdSurgeChat
  • aneesadav Nov 7 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 I just learned this term "picting" today - is that a term #teachers know? #edsurgechat
    In reply to @EdSurge
  • theASIDEblog Nov 7 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: Students are now avid consumers of fan and slash fiction, reading and writing their own long-form extensions of pop lit #edsurgechat
  • JMaguregui22 Nov 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 As a middle school teacher their desire to write is very strong and even in this age of quick, short responses. Ts and Ss both are finding ways to keep writing relevant #edsurgechat
  • mrjtweeter Nov 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 - maybe a slight decline. The immediacy of writing with technology sometimes makes Ss want to rush through writing. But it’s all about process imo #edsurgechat
  • DrLisaPelkey5 Nov 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 Decline in interest and skill..not sure about this relationship to tech because Ts also have decline in Instruction time devoted to writing. Many Ts not teaching writing at all. #edsurgechat
  • mijosano Nov 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
It seems like the conversational tone of texting has also found its way more strongly into students’ writing #edsurgechat

Q2 What challenges do you encounter when teaching writing? How do you try to address them? #edsurgechat
  • iamvlewis Nov 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
True. Writing should be taught across all content areas but I know some Ts that push back on that #EdSurgeChat
    • DrLisaPelkey5 Nov 7 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 Decline in interest and skill..not sure about this relationship to tech because Ts also have decline in Instruction time devoted to writing. Many Ts not teaching writing at all. #edsurgechat

Yes, blogging or writing news or magazine articles with included images and other multimedia are good ways to motivate the writing #edsurgechat
    In reply to @iamvlewis
  • ApraRalli Nov 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
#edsurgechat A1. A lot of students prefer writing and submitting work online.they would take notes too on their laptops
  • JMaguregui22 Nov 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2 Almost all Ts teach some form of writing. So finding consistency with the strategies being taught amongst Ts so Ss don’t feel confused on how to write. #edsurgechat
  • aneesadav Nov 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
I can see that. Wanting to get out to the audience ASAP - maybe not spending time to revise? #edsurgechat
    In reply to @mrjtweeter
  • theASIDEblog Nov 7 @ 8:16 PM EST
Absolutely, kids enter class with a ready affinity for digital writing - texting, chatting & creating in realtime @aneesadav #edsurgechat
    In reply to @aneesadav
  • iamvlewis Nov 7 @ 8:17 PM EST
Academic writing sucks the life out of the party if Ss can't find ways to connect to it to authentically. #EdsurgeChat

Do you think they have less of an interest in academic writing? Or were kids never into that? #edsurgechat

  • aneesadav Nov 7 @ 8:17 PM EST
Is that true? What's taking the place of #teachingwriting? #edsurgechat
    In reply to @DrLisaPelkey5
  • mrjtweeter Nov 7 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2 - one challenge is stamina. Longer pieces require sustained effort. I think building stamina is all about practice and gradually increasing length of writing time. #edsurgechat
  • seanmarnold Nov 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
It depends on what ‘academic writing’ means-any writing that doesn’t appear outside of a school environment (5 paragraph essays, etc)always seemed meaningless to me #edsurgechat
    In reply to @aneesadav, @EdSurge
  • theASIDEblog Nov 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
We try to keep a line between private & "school" writing, but we reference it & channel the energy to other forms #edsurgechat
    In reply to @aneesadav
  • iamvlewis Nov 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: I teach Ss with IEPs so naturally they are years below peers and sentence structure, diction, voice are lacking #Edsurgechat
  • AmandaZHand Nov 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
Do you have some suggestions for how teachers could align writing instruction strategies? PLCs, maybe? #edsurgechat
    In reply to @JMaguregui22
  • ApraRalli Nov 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
#edsurgechat A1 I have started giving task online using a lot of Google classroom and onenote notebook. @MicrosoftEDU #MIEE
  • mrjtweeter Nov 7 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2 - another challenge could be the “I’m done” mentality. Investing students in the process of continually improving their writing is important. It’s rarely ever “done” but rather ready for the next phase of revision. #edsurgechat
  • aneesadav Nov 7 @ 8:19 PM EST
Maybe they are finding their voices! Or maybe they are getting lazy. #edsurgechat
    In reply to @mijosano, @iamvlewis

A2. Understanding how to transfer their outline/ideas to a full finished product. There is only so much scaffolding you can do, eventually they have to think on their own. #edsurgechat
  • DrLisaPelkey5 Nov 7 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2 For me, the biggest challenge has always been the number of students who need 1:1 help and the grading load (doesn’t always provide for immediate feedback) #EdSurgeChat
  • iamvlewis Nov 7 @ 8:20 PM EST
Agreed that common language and strategies is key! #EdSurgeChat
    • JMaguregui22 Nov 7 @ 8:16 PM EST

  • aneesadav Nov 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
At first I read "stigmata" and I thought that could really impede writing. But also this is a good point. It speaks to the reason why my novel is only 1/3 written. #edsurgechat

I teach computer science. I think it is essential for students to be able to explain and articulate how they created their code. Ss script out their explainations and present to peers and adults. #edsurgechat

  • theASIDEblog Nov 7 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3: No matter the course, students are writing in projects, labs, etc. Need to find alternate, digital ways to publish & share #edsurgechat
  • mrjtweeter Nov 7 @ 8:27 PM EST
A3- in my #STEM classes I always had students write formal lab reports, which comes with new sets of writing rules, style and purpose. I think Ss writing in various styles in important. #edsurgechat
  • seanmarnold Nov 7 @ 8:27 PM EST
I think it helps that now I can write with more than #140characters, so I can expound at length using overly verbose vocabulary that previously would have been a non-starter in the old Twitter World-I could continue…but why push the limits now #edsurgechat

A3 - Also in #STEM classes persuasive writing and the ability to defend a stance on a topic is essential. Lots of writing went into Socratic seminar discussions. #edsurgechat

Q5 How do you use workshops, revision cycles or other methods to give feedback and teach the iterative process of writing? #edsurgechat
  • mrjtweeter Nov 7 @ 8:39 PM EST
A4 - graphic organizers of all sorts are like gold during the pre-writing process. ORGANIZE your thoughts kiddos! #edsurgechat
  • theASIDEblog Nov 7 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4: In pre-writing, we try to get students thinking about high-value digital styles of writing, such as commenting & feedback #edsurgechat
  • DrLisaPelkey5 Nov 7 @ 8:40 PM EST
A4 prewriting always starts as oral discussions / brainstorming sessions about the assignment and topics then we move into a KWL or quick write depending on the type of writing. #edsurgechat
  • iamvlewis Nov 7 @ 8:40 PM EST
Yes..they got a preshow mix, are inviting guests for perspective, and went deeper with research for podcast but saw similarities in writing. #EdSurgechat

That was my original reason, but I’ve found it helps all the students (which is often the case with #differentiation ) #edsurgechat

A5 - I really think peer editing can be incredibly beneficial. Both the editor and original writer have an important role to play and peer editing rubrics help students to invest and see clearly how both can be successful in the process. #edsurgechat
  • theASIDEblog Nov 7 @ 8:43 PM EST
A5: We have kids give us & each other regular feedback. Shouldn’t be a “Them v. Us” mentality; instead a collaborative network. #edsurgechat
  • michaeltwright7 Nov 7 @ 8:43 PM EST
@MrsLSchmitt12 #edsurgechat about writing process tonight.
  • iamvlewis Nov 7 @ 8:43 PM EST
A5: Ss look for opportunities for more beautiful words, figurative lang., & other aspects to improve writing. Not always quick & fun but screenwriters & authors suffer this slow process too #Edsurgechat
  • EdSurge Nov 7 @ 8:44 PM EST
    Q6 coming up in 1 minute…#edsurgechat
  • mrmacer Nov 7 @ 8:44 PM EST
A3: Always be reflecting! That is what I always taught students in the science classroom. Make sure that you write your observations! The trick now is to make sure its detailed and thought out! #edsurgechat
  • EdSurge Nov 7 @ 8:45 PM EST
Q6 What technology tools do you use to teach writing? Which features do you love? Which do you wish for or wish worked better? #edsurgechat

A6- @NotabilityApp let’s me send worksheet templates to my students and they can annotate with the pencil feature, and then write their full ideas with the typing option. Best of both worlds, and everything from the whole process is in one place. #edsurgechat
