Hi everyone. Jeff Petersen. APHG teacher. Might just be lurking tonight, but interested to hear what people have to say!
A1 In India I talk a lot about monsoon winds & how they have huge impact on agriculture & daily life!
Using the Q1, A1 format tonight. Jump in and share - we LOVE to hear from all of you.
A1 Some elements I have addressed in the past are monsoons, the Himalayas, & tsunamis.
Feel free to jump in whenever!
Hi Jeff! Glad you could join in!
A1:we talk about monsoons and tsunamis and earthquakes and how they affect people's lives. Lots of events in the past few yrs
A1 vastness diversity of landscapes urban issues water water everywhere climate change, popul, religion South Asia has it all!
A1 wow huge Q! Himalayas as physical barrier btwn S and SE Asia impacting everything from rain shadows, erosion, and flooding
A1 We discuss the Himalayas and the monsoons. And always the rivers - Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra.
A1 Also, after visiting Cambodia, I know the Mekong River plays a HUGE role in daily life of Cambodians.
Jeff from Colorado, lurking mostly.
A1 The climate changes in Asia are having, and will continue to have, major impacts on health, agriculture, etc.
1A and continental drift (Himalayas).
A1 I've yet to teach this region, but I think it's great opportunity to introduce landforms to Ss since there are so many!
Kristi from NoDak is here....kinda...
VERY true! It impacts everything!
A1. importance of Indus River and monsoon rains in the flourishing of early civilization in India
Rising seas is huge issue. Here is a pretty good movie Between The Tides
True - deserts, grasslands, mountains, forests
A1 trying this from iPhone. May be sporadic 2nite. In past monsoons, tsunami, earthquakes, tectonics, ring of fire, Himalayas
Will need to be moving on to question 2 in a min
You need to get a Wifi connection for your Uber car! :)
I haven't heard of that 1 I will need to check it ou!
Great point! And still essential today!
A1 - all the mountain ranges and their impacts - earthquakes, deserts, isolation as well as importance of water sources
We love it when you're kinda here! :)
A1: Waterways and climate patterns in the context of trade and other movement
A2 Two of the topics from history that I have addressed have been India’s independence movement & the Vietnam war
OK I think Q1 and Q2 are the equivalent of a college course
A1: mostly in sociopolitical context: Tibet water, India sanitation
A2 Since I teach ancient history, we cover the Indus Valley civilization.
A2: Salt March brings up so much human and physical geography --> independence, imperialism, nationalism, resources
A2 partition, colonialism, caste system, spread of rel mainly impact on current situation - try to get Ss to make connections
Q2. Divide of India. Kashmir Socratic. China and human rights in relation to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet
A2 Not as many as I should! Some on Indian independence. Some on the Green Revolution of India. not much else though...
A2 The spice trade between Europe and Asia had immeasurable impact on European history, living on in what & how we eat today.
A2 4 India we talk about Dravidians &Aryans and how segregation and discrimination is something that has been around 4 a while
All perfectly tied together!
Hi Ellie! Glad you're here!
A2. ancient- developed cities, Hinduism; modern- partition of India, Gandhi; contemporary issue- Nepali refugees to Columbus
I know that Ss get some info on the Caste system in World History before taking our class. So important.
Hi What resources do you use for your Kashmir Socratic?
2a Continue with religion _ Hinduism, Buddhism and its spread.
A2: 1 of my more obscure topics - development & revitalization of the Cheonggyecheon River
Ss always have a hard time grasping the caste system so we spend a good amount of time on that. And Indians independence
I didn't realize Columbus has a great deal of Nepali refugees. Interesting.
A2 events= Partition of India, geopolitics, current events rather than historical since they'll take world history next year
Sounds interesting! What resources do you utilize?
Definitely need to do more of this. I've been lax on Eastern Religions.
A2 also love to talk about history of world religions. Again Tibet conflict fits here too
A2 - impact of colonization, partition of India, religious conflict , Green revolution
Yes it does--that's a great reminder!
Yes, huge wave in the last 2-3 years. I believe most are originally Bhutanese who were forced out of Nepal
We spend a good amount of time looking at Hinduism and Buddhism as well. Looking at similarities and differences.
sorry chiming in late made me think about when I was in India at the worlds largest spice market https://t.co/iGKSQl8BDs
but also leave it up to students. By that point in the year they are mostly good at judging sources
A2 ancient, colonialism, Khmer, Vietnam, climate change impact& gmo on ag, pop issues. Always find Ss learn best thru inquiry
I had no clue. I saw on Real Sports something about a lot of Nepalese working in Qatar in awful conditions.
This is great! I believe incorporating food into geography allows Ss to become much more engaged
Awesome pic What parts of India did you visit?
A2b ...& region, culture & their diffusion
A2 I don't always do this but South Asia is full of ethnic & religious conflict that is often overlooked by US Media
Question 3 coming up in a minute!
Delhi Agra Jaipur not nearly enough of India
This is such an important lesson. Have to look for the news - don't count on media https://t.co/by81hCB9Hs
A2 I don't always do this but South Asia is full of ethnic & religious conflict that is often overlooked by US Media
Wow. When were you there? Why? I feel there is a story here!
A3 For this area, in the past my focus has been on Hinduism & Buddhism, yet I need to do more with Islam and Indonesia
A3 Alas, I don't do anywhere near enough. And I should.
. so true! Never knew about the religious tensions in Myanmar Mentioned in this good 60 Min ep https://t.co/I4LPqBoIbk
Good point. Easily forgotten that Indonesia has the largest Muslim population. 13% of the world's Muslims.
A3 I never taught standalone Geo, but I always tried to have students look at the lands in which we made war.
A3 Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam - compare and contrast, diffusion.
Is this the big urban renewal project in Seoul? Looks like it could be a great research activity for students
Wow. That is amazing - thanks for sharing that - I never even considered showing that data!
And where possible, those of their parents and grandparents too!
A3 - Hinduism and Buddhism mostly, but touch on Islam in Indonesia as well as Christianity in the Phillippines
Wow! I hadn't seen that 1 before!
Luckily ss in my area bring knowledge of religion from Asian areas they teach me more than I teach them
A3 I do a survey of the major religions showcasing Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity, Islam,
A3 Compare origins, practices, diffusion of Hinduism, Islam, Buddism
I LOVE a unique shaped pop pyramid. so many inferences for Ss to make on this one.
We look at "the big 3" monotheistic religions, Ss read about kids in the region, then write mini narratives.
A3 Buddhism, Hindu, Japanese religions focus but w/diffusion west rel 2. C/c &look @ cultures' influence on variances w/in rel
Hi Jen! Glad you could make it! What sources do you usually use?
Census International data site if you want to create more pop. pyramids UEA is another must see. https://t.co/3xtJ74rVHH
I studied abroad in Qatar & this is very evident in the service jobs as well.
A3 try to include Burma it is often overlooked but amazing history geography & sadly human rights issues was there in 95
A3: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism ... Mostly in a socio-political context w/ some trade history and diffusion
Moving on to question 4 in a minute!
so unlike most you see. Nice contrast to the westernized depiction.
Thanks! I've had Ss do this once before need to do again. I believe someone on this chat mentioned using legos too!
A3 Origin, diffusion, splits, influence. Compare/contrast stories & what they tell us about the place. https://t.co/7zuuzXxZjY
A3 I do a survey of the major religions showcasing Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity, Islam,
Did you see the migrants, or are they hidden from the public?
Yep!!! this Q is a college course, too!!! LOL
It was shocking. nothing at all like what I'm used to!
I love this ! Lots of cool websites Ss could delve into about Cheonggyecheon project https://t.co/DAipp7wMQz
that's the one! SS love the civic participation element. Could be a good active project or example for service learning.
Just gotta interject that tonight's is OFF THE HOOK awesome. I'm becoming a sponge, so much to absorb.
I know & I have used their report for North Korea. Great source!
We use excerpts from Bhagavad-Gita to discuss Karma, Atman, Reincarnation, Yoga's & morality. https://t.co/tWePzAIHSf
A4: I LOVE talking about festivals and holidays, food, music/art, sports, dress, daily lives, and so much more!
A4 Ancient culture usually settles on economics - trade, jobs and communication.
joining a bit late.... HELLO EVERYBODY!
A4
Population. How do different Asian nations deal with their populations.
A4 landscape, sacred spaces, cuisine, music/film, signage, clothes, pilgrimage sites, icons, impacts of isolation on culture
. had the opportunity for 6 French foreign exchange Ss to visit yesterday 1st ? my Ss had was what was school like
Construction workers and cab drivers are always out. Maids/cooks, more hidden.
This is a big part of APHG and Ss find it fascinating.
yes and things we consider rude are not even thought about because of pop ie bumping into each other common
This story from Jakarta (is Indonesia considered South Asia?) was something my Ss found bizarre.
https://t.co/lbD1n34l3Y
we use the We use the Bhagavad-Gita to look at karma and reincarnation as well.
I struggle deciding extent to which we study external markers (eg food, music, clothing) vs internal (eg values, traditions)
A4: So many
Development of language
Origins of Writing
How does democracy work with 1billion people?
Role of rivers in cultures
Yes. There is no such thing as a line in some Asian countries.
A4. diversity of languages spoken
Education (uniforms, classroom set up, expectations, tests, materials) to help Ss connect.
would asking students that same question be worthwhile?
When I was in Vietnam in 1971, 1 of the things that shocked me was driving in Saigon traffic amidst animal & human powered ...
A4 big aspects of culture I would teach was diffusion, migration, push/pull factors on groups, & evolving nature of culture
A4 have to show at least one Bollywood trailer. Ask for kids' favorites
Question 5 will be coming up in a second!
I think Ss find external markers more interesting &is useful for when they travel but I feel like it's superficial
and in many countries there are more than one language how does that work? Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati just a a few
... vehicles, pedestrians, etc. Two directions of traffic, not really lanes, weaving in & out, wow!
Q5: What current events and issues do you cover from this region and how do you address them? https://t.co/9BwsgAyGYu
What does migration look like in a caste society like India?
Great point Not an original statement by any means, but the fact you're actively thinking of balance is impressive
Yep. India is amazingly complex
A4b also cultural landscape, sequent occupance
Awesome idea! I need to build in more Bollywood movie clips as part of my India unit.
Adding this to my Pinterest board now!
A5 If I was teaching, we'd certainly look at climate change, tensions between India & Pakistan, China & its neighbors, etc.
A6 We'd also tackle economic development, labor rights, etc.
A5 Envrionmenal Refugees | Dhakar megacity
I wasn't aware of this site! Thanks so much for sharing Jen!
A4 ethnicities & language I try to have Ss understand that South Asia (all of Asia) is not ONE group but thousands
A5
-Sometimes C/Es focus on Physical Features events (Indus Flodding/Nepal Quake)
-India elections
-Bangladesh coastal erosion
. A5 Envrionmenal human beings | Dhakar megacity
depends on the caste. As migration (distance, destination, & reasons) vary significantly depending on that
A5 Terrorism. Try to combat phobias. Focus on tolerance. Ignorance is the enemy.
A5: starting to look at China building islands. Not current anymore but Fukushima comes up often.
When I lived in Asia lots of discussions about China, India & Pakistan & then of course Russia & nuclear weapons!
A5 I don't have a good answer for this Q, but we need to teach Asia beyond the Vietnam war. We don't know enough about Asia!
A5 Envrionmenal Refugees | Dhaka megacity Sorry, corrected spelling
A5. Climate change issues since they have such a huge impact on the populace. is a great resource for current events
made a GE file 2 superimpose the mouths of the Ganges over the eastcoast of USA for Ss to compare/contrast+connect
How is the Vietnam War being taught today?
A5 the island disputes in the South China Sea might seem minor to us in the US but this is huge, Palm oil production too
- grad class on Tuesday nights has kept me away- but I've enjoyed catching up on wed mornings & look forward to returning soon
India vs Pakistan and the Kashmir region South Asia
It was the best part of our trip. To see how kids are kids no matter race/poverty/etc.
How do others become global citizens? Help others around them I.e. helping make food for poor https://t.co/BIctwDmIso
iPhone making it difficult to respond much. Look forward to archives! Have to go retrieve my daughter from muddy soccer field
That would be awesome to see.
Sorkin was fired after season 4 (I believe). The show was never the same.
So true. I'm wondering how that works in India w/severe restrictions of many castes I'm fairly ignorant of it all
You're always welcome! Can't wait to have you back for our Tuesday chats!
let me see if I can find it +post a screenshot

Q6 What are your favorite activities & resources for this region?
Agreed! Tonight's chat is showing me that Asia can be taught thematically with global/local connections
Awesome! I wasn't aware of this 1. Definitely will check it out!
Good question. It's part of our Amer. Hist curriculum, but I don't know how many Ts get to it.
Tweavesdropping in invigorated & envious. Promise you'll never let the test-makers script your curricula.
