Q1: Are there some school subjects or activities that schools engage in that really don't seem to be beneficial or make a difference in learning? If so, what ones? #resiliencechat
Tidbit: Dr. Watson had to remind Sherlock Holmes that the earth was round. He had known that, but it wasn't relevant to cases he was working on. #resiliencechat
A1: well that's a thinker.
I would say some schools and the "new" math theory. It makes math way more complicated and students more confused. #resiliencechat

A1 #resiliencechat I think that it is not necessarily about the subject, it is about how he subject migh be introduced, targeted for engagement, used to inspire, and or innovate. No matter what the subject, if poorly introduced, (#NODITTOS) #relevance lacks!

A1: sometimes cursive is easier for those w/ spec needs as it is a fluid motion, but sometimes, not so much depending on the severity of the need. #resiliencechat
A2 We must have curriculum for very age level on #mentalhealth The brain is the most important part of the body, and yet, we sometimes wait for the random kind acts to find our children, rather than ensuring that positive mental health is built from day 1! #resiliencechat#BOOM
A2: A large majority of our Ss end up being parents & managing a household. I've always wondered why we don't mandate parenting & budgeting courses for everyone = very relevant #resiliencechat

A3 NO! Because it ends up shaming those of us who lack the physical ability to write clearly. I was shamed about it all throughout my education. #resiliencechat
A3 #resiliencechat No/yes/it depends - While I appreciate the fine motor skills needed to develop -We fail to use technology to assist all of our children with self-expression, or find ways to have them engage, so that thei minds can connect-even if their fingers can't use a pen!
But the act of cursive and shaming are 2 separate issues. The act of cursive helps your skills. The shaming should never have happened. I am sorry they hurt you. #resiliencechat
I sometimes wonder if I would have had a keyboard as a child, how differently my expression would have evolved. I mean, I am verbose now, and that took years as an adult to develop with very sketchy hand-writing. Shamed as well @MissShuganah#nofun#resiliencechat
I had a professor insist that I recopy my essay exam in his office because he was sure I wrote badly to cheat someone. Asshole only gave me a C. Only one I got in my major. #resiliencechat
I've mentioned my first grade teacher saying "Seven years old and still can't fold a piece of paper." Perhaps she thought I didn't hear her. #resiliencechat
A4: YES!!! Otherwise you don't know what the person is trying to communicate. Especially in French as the tenses change with spellings. I.e. You either would do smthg or you will. #resiliencechat

This is so true! Social/Emotional learning is as important or more important than academic learning. Teaching Ss how to self regulate, manage anxiety, managing conflict etc.. can be life changing and/or life saving. #resiliencechat

A4 Spelling is important, but... As a woman with two degrees in English, I am married to Mr. MIT. While he's a genius, I am always correcting his spelling. #resiliencechat
A4 A number of our primary folks continue to teach #spelling, and yet, more and more teachers, especially at the higher grade levels are allowing the technology to support children "spell check" rather than stifling learning, and innovation. #resiliencechat
I have a few friends who are dyslexic and brilliant and their difficulties with spelling have not hampered their success in life. They developed coping skills and "work arounds." #resiliencechat
Sometimes cursive can be easier for students than printing as you keep your pen/pencil on the paper so the flow is better. Perhaps giving choices? #resiliencechat

A dyslexic is the reason why I became an entrepreneur. I created a no patented a method of learning for those who think differently and it works for those who don't as well. #resiliencechat
I think that will continue to be the case until people of my generation and those who grew up in the 70s and 80s continue to hang around. #resiliencechat
The need to change the culture must be present, and the education for all about the #relevance of any actual homework. If we truly believe that the whole child must develop, then we must invest in the whole child, and not focus on #redundancy of work at home. #resiliencechat
The homework that I used to give Kindergartners and 1st graders was stuff like taking a piece of paper home and then having them bring it back the next day. (Following directions was the life/school skill I was trying reinforce.) #resiliencechat
Or, if they are doing it wrong for an hour or more with no support, correction, guidance, it can also turn into a hour that sets them back for days. #resiliencechat So, much of it depends on the class, the structure, and the #relevance.
A5: If homework is being assigned especially in elementary, then it should be something that supports the "whole child" e.g. doing an act of kindness, engaging in a physical activity, doing something with the family, etc... #resiliencechat
That's the idea, if we can actually have parents connecting with students, creating, innovating, building on learning, actually talking to each other, then the learning extends into relevant family time! #resiliencechat#relevant
Homework is one of those activities that is meant to move kids from school to work. Leaves no room for learning what interests one or creativity or play. #resiliencechat
Wait... What?!?! Less structured time for family time? Like getting to know one another and not rushing to the next organized group involvement? Novel idea! #resiliencechat ๐
A7 I had a student tell me that learning Composition was irrelevant to him. I did the best I could to show them that Freshman Comp was relevant. #resiliencechat
A6 #resiliencechat This slide represents one version of #relevance. As #educators, I believe that if we are focused on the children we serve, we understand that what we do matters, which means that we must work to make sure that the work we ask children to do matters as well.
The game I created to decode the French language. It's highly logical, but considered new and unique. #resiliencechat makes life easy for Anglos in a Franco world.
A7 Not going to insist other's learn Jewish history, but knowing about my heritage enables me to be more resilient especially in today's climate. #resiliencechat
A5 Homework, in our experience, consists of mainly rote tasks that take up valuable family timeโtime which has many proven associated benefits for long term resilience #resiliencechat
Yes, and as a school psych I spent many years talking parents off the proverbial homework edge, and empowering them to write on the homework, "We spent X minutes on this, then read a book" Sometimes you gotta make a choice for your kids! #ditchhomework#resiliencechat

Thanks #resiliencechat. Great session as always. Small in numbers this week but great in thinking engagement.
Much love to the #resiliencechat world. Be kind. ๐
