Hi everyone! I'm a high school teacher from Prince Edward Island, 🇨🇦 and thrilled to moderate tonight's #LearnLAP. Let us know your name and where your from. Tonight's topic is:
A1. Teacher Leadership to me is being able to try new ideas, tools, and tactics to get your Ss engaged. If those ideas don’t work? Try something different, get students to reflect, and help them see not everything in life works perfectly. #LearnLAP
A1: Pulling Ss together for important thoughts, giving Ss freedom to explore and make mistakes, encouraging Ss to take control of their learning #learnlap

A1. Leadership is elevating and centralizing the voices of students. How can we get out of the way and empower them to make connections, speak, and exercise their voice? #LearnLAP
A1: As a preservice teacher I have limited experience but IMO I think as a teacher you set the example for your Ss. Even if you are having a bad day, find a way to smile or laugh. Be a positive and encouraging role model for Ss and other Ts. #LearnLAP
A1. Leadership is giving Ss opportunity to take lead of discussions during our circle time, answering questions, taking lead on topic w/ lnowledge, helping others w/ prob. in clrm. in learning. #learnlap
#LearnLAP A1 Providing my Ss the best educational opportunities possible. We have made a move to bring in primary source speakers to share their stories and engage our Ss. Technology has changed the way we teach!
A1 Teacher leadership = teachers supporting each other. Ts support Ss as a rule, but it is stepping up to help others that makes the difference. #learnlap
A1. Teacher leadership in the classroom is the ability to shift one's paradigm from teacher-centric to student-centric. Students are empowered to lead the learning #LearnLAP
A2 You know what I have learned yesterday? I am wondering if..... SOmeone told me it was impossible too so i willing to test it out to see if true #learnlap
A2: Student leadership is the ability for students to take any given task, explore it, and come back with ideas on how to make it better. They’re also the one’s who are always willing to help their peers! #LearnLAP
A2 students engaged in a variety of activities in different places. Class meetings to solve bumps in the road and create norms that work. Choices and voices in abundance #learnLAP
A2: Putting the power back into students hands for how they want to learn. They need to take responsibility for their education with a gradual release of responsibility. #learnLAP
A2 - Student Leadership in our Classroom:
- Students leading mini-lessons,
- Announcing transitions,
- Helping each other with classwork,
- Making decisions freely,
- Assisting with technology,
- Doing what the teacher normally has to do,
- Modeling great behavior!
#LearnLAP
A2 Student leadership looks like students doing everything that doesn't require a degree. They create the expectations, the class mission statement, master the procedures and lead the learning process #LearnLAP

A2 we have assigned seating but it changes often. Each collaborative activity several ss choose a team leader responsible for sharing collaborative docs and providing updates to me during work time. #LearnLAP
When given the opportunity, the vast majority of students rise to the occasion and even exceed expectations. Adult paradigms are the only thing holding most students back. #learnLAP
A3 modeling that it is ok to make mistakes. Showing that when things aren't working right, you can adjust on the fly and still have a positive outlook. Don't be negative or complain, take charge to create positive change #LearnLAP
A3: Understanding that life happens and sometimes it throws a monkey wrench in the best laid plans/intentions. Just go with the flow and know your Ss so that you can be understanding, compassionate and flexible. #learnLAP#conversechat
#LearnLAP A3 My colleague @1988project! He joined our corporation 4 years ago and we have worked together to make our SS department primary source based. He is not afraid to make class to secure speakers and always puts the Ss first in his classroom.

A3. I've had a LOT of educators come alongside and teach me a variety of things. I adopted:
-empathy
-considering the WHY
-backwards design
-timely/detailed feedback
-listening
-valuing new and vet teachers
-consistency in expectations
-a more global view of learning
#LearnLAP
A3: I once had a professor tell me, “To you these will be your students but to someone else your students are the world.”
I haven’t ever forgotten it and now that I am a teacher, I can only pray that it is true for ALL Ss. #LearnLAP
A3 so fortunate to be able to meet teachers all over the country who inspire me now. It’s joy, positivity, and a growth mindset that I would bring into my teaching. #learnlap
#LearnLAP A3 @jmattmiller, @ericcurts, @rmbyrne and others. They are willing to share their expertise with the education community. I continue to learn everyday from their work.
A4 Best strategy is to step back and see if there is a student or content in front of me. Am I teaching just to teach or am I helping a student learn? #LearnLAP
Best way for Ss to learn is for it to matter to them. Problem Based Learning done right teaches Ss what they need to learn in a way that is relatable to their lives. #learnLAP#conversechat@JuliePjones
A4: Trying lessons to life skills. This is why I love technology. Everything can be a skill that Ss can use in the future. Also, Reflection. Let the Ss tell you what they enjoyed/didn’t like. #LearnLAP
A4 making the learning targets/objectives student friendly. Ss knowing what they are learning and why. They must do/learn A in order to do/learn B. Ensuring that all assigned work/reading is building towards something important. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A4 Hearing people share their stories. We have had Congressman John Lewis speak about being at Selma and the March on Washington and Mike Eruzione story about the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team.
A2 late answer, Student Leadership in my classroom is still in beginning stages, but more and more I see the Students taking charge. They're "Give me 5" is working, Mine I hope becomes broken... #learnlap

I just interviewed @PaulSolarz author of Learn Like a Pirate. It will go live next week. Paul is brilliant and this was a great interview. Please subscribe to The Wired Educator Podcast.
A5. It is incremental. Many teacher leaders did not see themselves as leaders at first, either. It is a series of steps where they realize that they are capable and, actually, pretty good at it! #LearnLAP
A5: I think if truly know your students and their strengths then you will be able to empower them to be leaders in the right setting. Everyone student has something to contribute. #learnLAP
A5 just by giving each ss the opportunity to be a leader. Maybe assigning roles early in the year but as the year progresses allowing ss to choose their roles. Recognizing the ss who lead by example but may not be vocal leaders. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A4 Mr. Philo Barnhart and Mr. Charles Moisant visited our 80s/Art Ss. Mr. Barnhart is the creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid and has been part of other Disney animations. Talked to Ss about following your dreams.
A5. It is also critical for teachers to understand that leadership looks different for different kids/adults! Not everyone is on stage and commanding. Some leadership is quietly powerful. #LearnLAP
A5 Communicate worth and potential with simple language changes, i.e., classroom jobs become leadership roles, students are routinely recognized for their strengths and contributions to the classroom #LearnLAP
A5 give them opportunities to shine, create, share and participate. This doesn’t usually happen while raising hands to ask/answer basic questions in a classroom. Projects, group and individual are so important #LearnLAP
A6 Learning this everyday, when the Ss seek out their own opportunities, and it's more than cleaning the room, it's genuine ways that they can help - Got to seek this out more. #LearnLAP
A6 - Here are 13 ways that I empower my students in our classroom (explained in detail in "Learn Like a PIRATE")... There are certainly more! #LearnLAP
A6 LOTS, ss can help one another with iPad issues. Ss are pretty much always encouraged to share ideas, talk during work time. When ss approach me with a question that I know could be answered by someone else I let them do it. #LearnLAP
A6 Student leaders are in charge of collecting notes/assignments, etc., for students who are absent and when absent student returns, those leaders help the returning student get caught up. #learnlap
Since I'm preservice my experience is more as a lead learner in my MAT prgrm bc my classes are mixed w/ undergrad. I try to lead by always being available 4 advice, help, to encourage, to listen, to motivate, & 2 show my youngr classmates that life is still fun at 40!! #learnLAP

I'm looking forward to checking out "The Superstar Curriculum: A Teenager's Guide to Success" by tonight's moderator @superstarcurric! Hope you take a look at it as well! https://t.co/yZ6W9IDcQ1#LearnLAP
A7. I saw @Meldst87 do this really well in her health class. She took the CPR test and while keeping the importance/significance of it, turned it into something super engaging and fun #LearnLAP
A7 I am so lucky to be a social studies teacher. Teaching geography allows me to always be on the lookout for a teachable moment. I constantly have my Twitter feed up and if I see something cool I show the kids. Maps/charts/breaking news etc. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP Opening the world to our Ss. Thanks to Skype and Hangouts our students in grades 6-8 have visited Sweden, Russia and Canada this year. Grades 2-3 will visit Israel in January. It’s my job to take our Ss beyond the walls.
A7 I try to not be doing tasks, (easier said than done). For example, when it is reading time, I pull out my #learnlap book (or some other awesome #TLAP book) to show that I want to learn too! When it's math, I'm working with Ss and playing the games too!
A7 sharing ss work with other teachers is great too. They LOVE staff voting on projects. Feedback from teachers that aren't me on stuff they did in my class #LearnLAP
A7 - As students accomplish the goals they set for themselves, they write their accomplishment on a Post-It and put it on our board. Once per month I take them all down and we have a mini-celebration together! #LearnLAP
Thank you @superstarcurric for moderating an outstanding #LearnLAP chat tonight! So appreciated!!!
Please join us NEXT WEEK as @Katiemc827 moderates on "The power of releasing questioning over to our students."
For now, jump on over to #tlap for more great discussion!
#LearnLAP Thanks for letting me share our story at North White tonight. Thanks to everyone who shared their ideas. I continue to learn new ideas everyday day. We are all in this together!
