#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Welcome #FLedChat Pals and Happy New Year! Tonight we will be referring to this article from ISTE to discuss Ed Tech Trends for 2018. https://t.co/wJReXwKiAt

Yeah it’s a six (well 7?) step process. Research, examine situation, generate challenges, find underlying problem, generate solutions, write criteria by which to judge solutions, rank solutions based on criteria, use best one to make an elaborated plan. #fledchat
A1: I have become quite intrigued with #TeachingSDGs so I would say global learning for sure. That has always been my goal, but want to enrich it. #fledchat
A1. I am working on the Global Learning through collaborating with teachers in other countries on the #SDGs, helping their students develop their English speaking, & through #mysteryskype sessions. When I am not testing that is! #FLedChat
A1: I definitely see digital citizenship and global learning continuing to be relevant in my class. Social media is a powerful tool and connects with global learning and creating an awareness of what's going on outside of the USA #fledchat
A2: I believe that HAS been our push....to see it as a tool for the Ss....not the focus. Ss need the skills to collaborate, learn to live in a world with TECH...they need the skills. #fledchat
It's always been about the students, really! We've gotten to a plateau stage of technology overload - and there are only so many shiny objects that one can consume at one time! It's what you do with the tech that matters! #fledchat
A2. Because tech became the focus for a while & not our students—the only reason we should be teaching. Ts & admin became so focused on the bells & whistles that we lost sight of meeting our Ss where they are. #FLedChat
A2: Without some meaningful application by Ss, the tech just becomes a cool gadget/app/toy, etc. If students can’t use the tech to enhance their learning, then it’s no more useful than a worksheet #Fledchat
A2: I think while we were adjusting to using tech more the focus is more on the tools, but now we realize that good strategies is what counts with or without tech. The new ISTE standards help too. #FLedChat
The problem is we have allowed technology to replace good teaching ... blinded by the bells and whistles not realizing that we have stopped generating anything truly magical. #fledchat
It's always been about the students, really! We've gotten to a plateau stage of technology overload - and there are only so many shiny objects that one can consume at one time! It's what you do with the tech that matters! #fledchat
A2: Not every kid/school/community has the same access to technology that others do. Trends can focus on what the individual student can do, regardless of what technology is available to them. it can be used to enhance trends/instruction though #fledchat
I disagree. The teachers I know who were already excellent use tech to enhance the class experience. Many teachers use tech at substitution level which is not helpful but also not magic-reducing. #fledchat
#fledchat A2 I forget the Florida tech rubric but it talkes about the difference between using tech as a tool vs using it to create a new type of learning or new way of showing learning.
A3: We are moving toward PL, but still have work to do. We have some ongoing trainings (mostly in the elementary), and do try to differentiate as needed. #FLedChat
A3. It will take a total mind shift. And I’m not being negative—even when we did mini EdCamps, participants still wanted others to present something rather than discussing things. We need to seek out strengths in all, not just a few. #FLedChat
Was part of #CAGTI2017 where we create augmented reality maps at the Googleplex. It takes a LOT of time to set this up (drain on planning) but once done, the potential to share, augment and reuse is high for sustaining over time! #fledchat
What could you do with an #Alexa in the classroom? We're about to start pilot 2 of #ClassAlexa - Classroom help with just your voice. We'd love more Ts to try it. Please share to other Ts. Reply, DM or visit https://t.co/MwuSuwG0H0 to learn more.
#fledchat A3 Here in England rather than planning every day, they group it together so you might have 2 hours one day. However, we had a good hour lunch. I think that is key. It gives you time to 'think' during planning. 40 minutes is not enough to process and really develop.
Q4: Referring to #8 in the article, what are some ways we can help Ss leverage the power of digital media to work toward social justice and equity? #FLedChat
#fledchat I didn't think I would at first..but I got so much more done and could 'relax' and do. The longer lunches helped. In Fl I had 30 from drop off to pick up...and if drop off took 10...
#fledchat q4: I go two ways with this. Yes..they need to learn how to move away from just digital socializing to digital impacting. But, I think the age matters. I think Ss need time to interact with others face 2 face.
A4. As Ss learn about social justice, they can use digital media to create projects to educate others, or to design potential solutions to social problems. #FLedChat
That makes sense. I think elementary it would be more "class" blogs and websites, rather than individual student sites. Balance is important though! #FLedChat
A4: Got a great resource for this today https://t.co/wAVZm5d1bx - sent by my software guru husband @c_d_stephenson - working my way through! A good resource for our upper school students for sure! #fledchat
A4: I’d like to start with kids just learning to share appropriately online. Perhaps taking the focus off of themselves and directing their intention to social justice/equity, they would become more conscious of their own digital behavior 🤔 #FLedchat
Q4: Referring to #8 in the article, what are some ways we can help Ss leverage the power of digital media to work toward social justice and equity? #FLedChat
Q5: Which of these topics do you feel the most comfortable implementing in your classroom? Which do you need more help with? #FLedChathttps://t.co/wJReXwKiAt
A lot of secondary students already have access to social media. If they're given the tools to determine how to use digital media effectively, I believe this generation could do a lot to work towards social justice and equity #fledchat
A5: As an @ibmyp educator through and through, Global Collaboration flows in my veins and as a #geographyteacher with #edtech addiction, this is so easy in any subject area! Our students will live in a global society - understanding each other will be key! #fledchat

A5. I feel most comfortable with student-centered & global learning. Need more help with computational thinking. Thinking of taking a #MOOC dealing with that. #FLedChat
#fledchat A5 I would like to develop (oddly enough) better Global Learning and VR skills. I would like to see deeper GL collaboration. Its hard to match curriculum goals sometimes with all the standardized test emphasis.
Brill job tonight, @KristinCHarr - rockstar leadership and what a brilliant reflective chat! Sharing this article with my faculty this week to come...when we all thaw out in Flordia enough to read it ⛄️#fledchat
I feel good about DC with my own students, but I'm struggling with my own children. They got their first phones for Christmas and it's a bit overwhelming. I'd love to learn more about AR/VR with my students. My boys could probably teach me a few things! #fledchat
Many thanks to @KristinCHarr for moderating this wonderful #FLedChat tonight! Thanks to everyone who joined in! 2018 is already starting with great promise! See you all next week!
