Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.
Happy Saturday and welcome to #LeadLAP! So pumped to have @staci_erickson2 host today! I'm Beth, co-author of #LeadLAP and proud principal of #FMSTeach Welcome, to all!

A1- Kindness should be intentional. I try to DO something Kind daily- Love RAK- pay it forward- favorite buy Dunkin for person in front of me! #LEADlap#kindness180
A1: Kindness is an ACT; therefore it is an action! Compassion and Empathy are feelings that bring us to SHOWING KINDNESS ❤️👍🏼 #ChooseKind#KidsDeserveIt#LeadLAP
A1: It seems to me that no one would know about kindness unless it is acted upon. It's like we tell our students all the time - "Show me, don't tell me!" #LeadLAP
A1: People can't always seen how you feel, but they can definitely see how kind you are to them. Feeling without action, in this case, is nothing. #leadlap
A1: life provides so many opportunities to show what kindness means and participate in acts of kindness. If intentional, you can model acts of kindness all day long #leadlap
A1 Feelings can fluctuate and change, but we can lead them with our actions. Show #kindness, the feeling will follow. Show love, the feeling will follow...#LeadLAP
A1: I agree, kindness is a service to others. By serving others, acknowledging ones presence and treating others with respect we are creating a more peaceful environment #LeadLAP
A1: Even though kindness is a noun, it is only proven through how we treat others on a regular basis. Random acts and intentional acts of kindness. #leadlap
A1 Kindness is a belief, a way of life & an action. It is not something you do once. You live kindness daily. We can see kindness through the words we use, our interactions and how we treat each other. We need to encourage and nourish kindness everywhere. #LeadLAP
A1- sometimes we might now feel like showing kindness. Whether we have had a rough day or things are just not going well. We can still choose to show kindness even if we aren’t feeling it #LeadLAP
A1: Kindness is an intentional focus on doing something positive for others! It’s about lifting others up! Big or small... the world 🌎 needs more acts of kindness! #LeadLAP
A1: Kindness is meant to be SHOWN, whether to yourself or others. Kindness comes from the ❤️ It is inate and lies within all of us, sometimes deeper down than others. Always #ChooseKind and help your Ss SHOW IT! #leadlap
These days to me are the most important to show kindness! It helps me get out of the grumpy! I've written notes for my whole staff on my bad days so it focuses on the great! #LeadLAP
A1: I believe that kindness inspires gratitude both in the person delivering the action and in the person that is the recipient of the action. #leadlap
A1. For several years each student had their photo taken with their thank you message for whatever educator they wanted to show appreciation toward. Then all were posted on web site for community to read. #LeadLAP
A1: kindness can be shown, given,
Modeled and felt. As leaders we need to be intentional about how our actions and words reinforce a culture of kindness #LeadLAP
A1 #LeadLAP Kindness must be in our and kiddos DNA. If we can embrace the message that is a part of what we do daily, then the actions will always lead and guide us!
Holy smokes this chat is flying already! Reading all the awesome things you do to spread kindness makes me so thankful for this awesome PLN! Good morning to anyone I missed! Blessed to have you here! #LeadLAP
Kindness needs to be without strings. Kindness is because you care, kindness is because it is the right thing to do. You will find that kind people are a magnet for kindness too. #LeadLAP
A1 Goes back to the Golden Rule...treat others as you would like to be treated...and everyone prefers to be treated kindly. Kindness comes through action. #LeadLAP
A1 It means that you take an action, do something for someone else, actively look for ways to help others, spread the positive, lift others up, #LEADlap
A1: Kindness is an outpouring of doing that is rooted in selflessness and servitude. Kindness is hard. It is strength. Unfortunately, we’ve come to a place where it’s synonymous with rolling over and being passive. It’s quite the opposite. #leadlap
A1: Action is how we carry out the kindness that flows from our spirit. We can think great thoughts all day, but they do not translate to others benefiting from action. #LeadLap
A1. Also believe that young students have to be shown examples of how they can show kindness in a variety of different places and times. This chart might help? #LeadLAP
So true! Many of our students come to school and its their safe space. They haven't experienced kindness that is authentic and real. #kindness180#LeadLAP
A1 I read somewhere recently that a random act of kindness before you start your working day is good for your mental health. Send a colleague a message of support or encouragement #LeadLap
A2- A note just because, offer to help with something, bring them a treat, drop a text to say hello and thinking of you.. so many ways #LEADlap#kindness180
"School Administrator Magazine #AASAHQ called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named Man (Person) of the Year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!" #satchat#EdLeadership#LeadLAP
Good morning #leadlap! Jumping on from the playground:) A1 to me kindness is actually going out of your way to do something for others- hard to make an impact if the thought stays in your head
A2: Buy coffee for the person behind you in line, complement a stranger, smile at someone who looks sad, find a favourite "something" and leave it in their room. #LeadLAP
A2 There are so many: a surprise phone call to chat, a surprise coffee, an unexpected visit, a donation to a food bank, paying for something for the person behind you, sending a note of gratitude. No action is too small. Share kindness, share love. Make the 🌎 better. #LeadLAP
A2: It can be as simple as putting coffee in the teachers' lounge, or making sure someone who really needs it gets an anchor of appreciation. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. #LeadLAP
A2: Random Acts of Kindness are something that we really plan to implement through the holiday season and hope will carry through the rest of the year! #LeadLAP
A2: One of my favorite acts of kindness is to buy a stranger @Starbucks ☕️ in line behind me! It makes ANYONE'S day! I share the stories with my Ss and they tell everyone!! It makes us all smile! #LeadLAP
A2: In relation to staff, I put out a survey at the beginning of the year and then give them little "favorites" with notes throughout year. Matters to many! #leadlap
A2: sending or leaving someone a note, buying someone their fav coffee etc just because, sending a positive text or email thanking someone for something small or just the great job they are doing #leadlap
A2: When I walk across campus each day I am intentional about maki g eye contact and smiling. I say hi to every kid I know and show them how excited I am to see them. It makes me happy to see frowns turn upside down. #leadlap
A2. This morning @burgessdave showed a random act of appreciation toward @teresagross625 and I which was GREATLY appreciated. >SEE< the sunshine in my life??!?! #LeadLAP?
A1. Also believe that young students have to be shown examples of how they can show kindness in a variety of different places and times. This chart might help? #LeadLAP
A2: For a week I bought the order of the car behind me in the Starbucks drive through. Not sure what their reaction was but I hoped it would start their day off positively. #leadlap
A2: Whenever I can, I buy coffee or lunch for person behind me. Drive thrus are the best. But just asking someone how they are & mean it, does wonders. #leadlap
A2: An anonymous kindness is the best. A treat or picking up after someone. Doing a chore for them. Paying it forward in the drive thru. A free babysitting treat (though that can't be anonymous). #LeadLAP#kindness180
A2: When I walk across campus each day I am intentional about maki g eye contact and smiling. I say hi to every kid I know and show them how excited I am to see them. It makes me happy to see frowns turn upside down. #leadlap
A2: One thing I used to do was to pay the toll for the car behind me when crossing a bridge. Now it's all done by cameras so I can't anymore...:( #leadlap
A2: We like to find a silly holiday or two each month from the Daily Holiday Blog and deliver treats or trinkets to teachers doors. Modeling kindness from admin to T is great for Ss to learn from. #LeadLAP
A2: Something small that we do at school is have a place to put extra quarters on the soda machine. It goes a long way when someone needs some caffeine though! #LeadLAP
A2 I like randomly buying breakfast for colleagues, offer to help whenever you can, volunteer, be observant to others and their needs, help w/o being asked, just step in #leadlap
A2: Something as simple as walking a teacher’s class to their encore class to give her a brake has been my spontaneous gesture n teachers love it #leadlap
A2- Yesterday I was shopping and knew that the manager (never met him)was the dad of a 4th gr teacher of mine. I had him paged & told him how awesome is daughter. Made his day! #LeadLAP
A2: My 1st graders created a Kindness Bucket List! They each selected 1 act of kindness they wanted to do! It’s been awesome to watch them check it off once completed! #LeadLAP
A2: For a week I bought the order of the car behind me in the Starbucks drive through. Not sure what their reaction was but I hoped it would start their day off positively. #leadlap
A2: Stop by your local post office and ask if you can participate in "Operation Santa" you can pick up letters written to Santa and write back to the kids. Better yet - get your students involved - they can ALL write letters! #LeadLAP
A2 We can do as many small random acts of kindness as we can. The world needs them. Do not seek recognition. Plant a seed and watch kindness grow. Know that you played a part in it. #LeadLAP
a2 When detentions are merited, I don't put them on paper. Rather the S comes to my room & gets help with math. That takes care of 2 problems. #leadlap
A2: Surprise people with your commitment to truly understanding. Take the time to know them as both an individual and as part of a culture and context. Too often we operate from the claustrophobic confines of our own culture and context. Seek truth beyond yourself. #leadlap
A1. Also believe that young students have to be shown examples of how they can show kindness in a variety of different places and times. This chart might help? #LeadLAP
A2: Stop by your local post office and ask if you can participate in "Operation Santa" you can pick up letters written to Santa and write back to the kids. Better yet - get your students involved - they can ALL write letters! #LeadLAP
A2: I'm trying to catch RAK's/positive behavior on our "character cam" and posting on our school FB/twitter page. It makes the students', parents', and teacher's day! #leadlap#momauguinproud
A2: we’ve done #thankfulthursday for staff this November.... provided room service with hot cocoa and snacks for teachers, left fresh fruit and water in lounge... left notes of gratitude in mailboxes #leadlap
Some big post offices let you take it a step further for families in need. You can choose from their selected letters and actually Be Santa - purchase the gifts they want, wrap and take back to post office. #LeadLAP
I love they are making their own. I have our leadership students do a Character Strong Challenge in class every day. @careacter I will add making this calendar to the list for Dec. #Leadlap

@APKRentz, @MsMichiesClass, @careacter
A2: I randomly tell people how much & why I appreciate them. They usually don’t know what to do w it. 😳 Wrote about it: https://t.co/e1qDV4c7Ti#leadlap
A3: Rest, Rest, REST!! Sometimes, as I encountered first hand this week, we do so much for others that we neglect our own bodies! Remember to take time for yourself... rest and RECHARGE! One can not run on empty fumes! 😉 #LeadLAP
Getting ready for tomorrow's chat. Set an alarm on your phone so you don't miss it! #LeadLAP#leadlapmass Sharing questions in advance. Have an awesome Saturday!
A2: Last year our classroom was visited by the Kindness Elf...and this year the Kindness Elf is coming back! Each day the Elf brings a message for the students- it’s a special Kindness message for them to complete that day! #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP As a grade-level team this year, students wrote letters of gratitude to members in our community. We also took the perspective of characters from books we read and pair shared what they would be thankful for. @WDeVicaris@Delran_Super@JenniferPenna@DMSTeam6A
Holy smokes this chat is flying already! Reading all the awesome things you do to spread kindness makes me so thankful for this awesome PLN! Good morning to anyone I missed! Blessed to have you here! #LeadLAP
A3) I like to look for places to add fun, whether in conversation with someone or just in life. Walk down the hall and smile at someone. Visit recess or lunchroom or classes. #joy abounds. #LeadLAP
It’s really great to listen to the kind words as staff write the cards. “He’s such a great kid.” “She really makes me laugh.” “Such a talented artist.” #LeadLAP
A2b: I always get up out of my office and talk to parents and tell them how I appreciated their child and what amazing parents they are— huge relationship builder #LeadLAP
A3: Disconnection. Allie myself to be present and mindful in the company of my wife and kids. Avoid the temptation to carry my work into my family time. #leadlap
It's really cool. Had so much fun doing the letter writing with my students. The gift giving option is only available in big cities. The list of USPS locations will be out 12/1. #LeadLAP
A3: I get anxious in the car on way to work, thinking about everything I have to do. So I've started either listening to relaxing music or just enjoying some silence during my commute. I also stop for a tea if there's time. Much safer than getting upset while driving! #leadLAP
A3: when the day is not as expected I love to drop into my Kinder classrooms and just hang in the back of the room or sit next to them while working. The S will always put you back in the right track. #LeadLAP
A3: An afternoon nap followed by family fun time or vice versa. Both recharge differently and both are needed. Rest for the body and sunshine for the soul. #LeadLAP#kindness180
A3: Sleep 8 hours a day and walk 10K steps a day. Won't cost me anything but time and will make ALL the difference in the classroom and at home. Getting better at both but not there yet! #leadlap
A3 This is hard but the most impactful kindness I can give myself is freeing myself from worrying about what others might think- when I do that it's amazing the happiness it brings #LeadLAP
A3: Disconnection. Allow myself to be present and mindful in the company of my wife and kids. Avoid the temptation to carry my work into my family time. #leadlap
A3: Engage with colleagues throughout the day! Yes, work always has to be done, but, take some time for yourself and walk to your neighbor teacher and ask how his/her day is going! It will recharge both of your energies! #LeadLAP
A3: Feeling overwhelmed? Treat your body to a 10 minute walk! I do this with my students for our daily brain break and it truly has made a world of a difference! If it's raining... check out @GoNoodle 👍🏼😁 #LeadLAP
A3: to make sure I touch base with my own family when they get to school often they are asleep when I leave. My son has a job in my office daily which forces the checkin! #LeadLAP
A3: I stop whatever I am doing and go watch the sunset. Even if I have to drive in my car - done. It is my favorite thing on the Oregon Coast (and doesn't happen every day). #LeadLAP
A3 Everytime I go to the gym or treat myself to a coffee, I am taking care of myself. This is important in true life balance.
It is important however to make room to help others as part of taking care of ourselves. #LeadLAP#bekindEDU
I once asked a very sweet friend of mine why this is so. She said she didn't do it because to her it seemed phony. So sad! I'll take my chances anyway. #leadlap
A3- I started running again! I forgot to take time and do something for me and I was a little on edge. Running helps me to decompress and relax. #LeadLAP
A3: Naps, walks, sleeping in, coffee dates with friends, time with family disconnected, reflecting and writing...things that help me recharge. #leadlap
TBF, it does have to be genuine and it may take a bit of time to phrase what you mean. Saying the same thing to everyone does come off as cliched. #leadlap
A3: I walk down to my own kids classrooms to see them learning and enjoying their days. Being prinicpal at my own kids school, I still miss many things they do, being intentional is important. #LeadLAP
A3: I loved when @Joe_Sanfelippo asked us to all text, email, DM etc someone that has had a positive influence in our live's. Instant Gratification. #leadlap#kindness180
A3. I could NOT seem to get myself to start walking again. Then I purchased these headphones and I am addicted. No more stupid earbuds falling out. I use MapMyWalk and compete w/ myself! #LeadLAP
A4 Loving on a a Ss and showing positive rewards even in the face of less than desired behavior. When was the last time that S had a positive interaction? #leadlap
A4: Absolutely love this concept. Isn't that the most challenging? Easy to show love and kindness to those who give it. Essential for those who do not. #Leadlap
A4: I feel like if we are looking for ways to be kind, we will find them. I won't not tell the truth in an effort to be kind. But, if I look, there is always a way to be genuinely kind. #leadlap
A4- when someone is having a bad day and takes it out on me I work to not take it personally. Sometimes an act of kindness towards them is exactly what they need #LeadLAP
A4: Regardless of the person's mood or mindset, if we don't push #kindness180, then we are going to stay in a slump. Make it happen to the misbehaving kid, grumpy teacher, mean food server etc! It will have a wonderful ripple effect! #LeadLAP
A4 Great question! I have had negative co-workers in the past that tried to bring everyone down. Encouraging discussions didn't help. Had to encourage through notes and other means. #LeadLAP#kindness180
A4: If someone is not showing kindness towards me, I try to take on their PERSPECTIVE! It's so important to communicate with open dialogue. If you get hostile, they will get hostile. #LeadLAP
A4 We should never assume someone is undeserving. We don’t know their struggles. Always show kindness & generosity, even to those who show tough attitudes. Our sole mission is to spread kindness. That is how we will change the 🌎 No limits. #LeadLAP
A4: Not sure that anyone DOESN'T deserve kindness, but I like the tip idea...or just reminding stressed people "Do me a favor...have a great day" or "don't let the bastards get you down" :) #leadlap
A4) This happens all the time when people are upset & uninformed about something. Takes time, true listening & genuine caring to hear them, let them diffuse and then problem solve together. #LeadLAP
A4 Being truthful can be unkind and finding something to be nice about is hard. It can make a huge difference though and turn the situation around. Telling someone how nice their top is can be a good place to start. #LeadLAP
A4: an easy 180 act of kindness is to assume positive intentions. The rude behavior or absence may be a symptom of a much bigger issue and by treating the person kindly regardless may just be the act needed to turn them around. #LeadLAP
A4: True kindness is blind. The person(s) receiving it should not weigh in at all. Pick up a Ss trash. Model how to be kind ESPECIALLY when receivers don’t “deserve” it. Mindset should be-all deserve it.#LeadLAP#kindness180
A4: I think of this quote and have it printed and on my desk. It helps me to remember to presume positive intentions and that there is always a reason that someone acts the way that they do. #LeadLAP
A4. A smile and ‘hello’ goes a long way. Some people seem surprised by it but you never know who needs someone to let them know they are ‘seen’ and cared about #LeadLAP
A4: The simple act of smiling and showing appreciation can go a long way to show kindness. Sometimes it is a secret challenge I have with myself to see if I can get the grumpiest of people to smile. 😜 #Leadlap
A4: I model for everyone in my building how I expect everyone to be treated - even those people who don't necessarily deserve it based upon their actions. Just because someone made a bad choice doesn't mean we yell and scream. #LeadLAP
A4: Unkind individuals sometimes NEED someone to show them the opposite, challenge their way of thinking, alter their state of mind. I take a stand and show respect and kindness to the extreme! 😁 You will be surprised at the individuals reaction!! #LeadLAP
A4: Personal notes left on teachers' desks - letting them know how much they mean to the school. Or collect positive comments about Ts from Ss through a google form. Print them when Ts are struggling. #LeadLap
A4: I try to remember that everyone is fighting their own battles that we may not know about! We have a Stationery Station set up in our mailroom at school! I try to write a note of encouragement when I see a T having a rough day! #LeadLAP
A4 Great question! I have had negative co-workers in the past that tried to bring everyone down. Encouraging discussions didn't help. Had to encourage through notes and other means. #LeadLAP#kindness180
A4: in the moments of being irrationally yelled at, strive to find the rational worry, fear, or frustration at the root. It takes a lot of patience but the results are exponentially more desirable #LEADLAP
A4 I once had a S say that if someone was mean to her she would give them a tree because clearly they are hurting-I try to follow her example of generosity even when it takes a lot of effort #leadlap
Well said, Chris. Heaven knows I have been unkind to others at times, and it wasn't meant maliciously. They are as entitled to grace from me as I am from them. #leadlap
A4: I try to remember that everyone is fighting their own battles that we may not know about! We have a Stationery Station set up in our mailroom at school! I try to write a note of encouragement when I see a T having a rough day! #LeadLAP
A4: 80/20 rule is my goal —trying to get 80 percent buy in on school wide initiatives — I have found the other 20 percent follow because they don’t want to be left out — always a squirrel out there @mrdearybury1#LeadLAP
I like to use the word struggling instead of unkind. Most people do not want to be unkind. They often live major struggles and don’t know how to properly respond or react. Let us show them kindness, always. #LeadLAP
Going through something like this right now at work! Trying to consider what the other person might be going through that I am not aware of. I always try to remember to assume that I know less than 1/2 the story. Be kind and #leadlap
#LeadLAP A4 I heard a sermon where the preacher said “it’s easy to love the easy ones—loving the difficult ones is where the true heart comes in!” Profound!! Being kind to the unkind is a true act of faith in humanity!
A4: I try to remember that everyone is fighting their own battles that we may not know about! We have a Stationery Station set up in our mailroom at school! I try to write a note of encouragement when I see a T having a rough day! #LeadLAP
A4: In our roles, we must always put our own hurts aside and move forward in kindness. When I've been treated poorly, I still strive to act in grace. This kindness matters daily. #LEADLap
A4: I try to remember that everyone is fighting their own battles that we may not know about! We have a Stationery Station set up in our mailroom at school! I try to write a note of encouragement when I see a T having a rough day! #LeadLAP
Yes! I used to keep a daily gratitude journal. Having a very difficult year this year, and thinking I need to start doing this practice again! #leadlap
A4: As an educator it is our job to...
1. Find every student’s bright spot 💡
2. Turn those bright spots 💡 into bright moments 💡
3. Continuously foster the bright spots 💡 to create bright futures 💡!
#LeadLAP#SaturdayMotivation
Yes! I used to keep a daily gratitude journal. Having a very difficult year this year, and thinking I need to start doing this practice again! #leadlap
If you want to take this on - definitely connect with Staci. She posts a new challenge on #Kindness180 and has weekly calendars for her school. #LeadLAP
A5: Our Ss leave post-its around school with positive messages. They decorated main hall with pots of flowers. We had an "Appy Hour" with food. #leadlap
A5: I created the first poster on top and a week later the poster on the bottom appeared! My goal was to spread kindness... and it WORKED!! ❤️👍🏼😁 #LeadLAP
A5- I'm going to start with "Rudy" our Elf who returns soon- He will leave a daily Kindness challenge for the Ts and Ss! Then continue through the year #Leadlap#Kindness180
A4: As an educator it is our job to...
1. Find every student’s bright spot 💡
2. Turn those bright spots 💡 into bright moments 💡

A5). One way is we do the RAK week in February. Start with kick off assembly & then Ss turn in RAKs they see other do, or do themselves. We fill a kindness jar with them in the office. #leadLAP
A5: Every Monday, I spread kindness by passing out @growthmindset1 and #Kindness quotes to all my students and colleagues! It brightens everyone's day!! ❤️ #LeadLAP
A5-We are starting a kindness crew at school. We will have student leaders who will help create kindneneas challenges and service projects. Also, each teacher completes 1 kindness challenge a month with their class. #LeadLAP
This sounds strange, but it's true, I kind of like it when it's not returned. I like the feeling of making others feel better. I have been the recipient in difficult times. I think of it as paying it forward. #leadlap
A5 Kindness challenges can create good habits which then become part of the culture. Picking up litter, sitting next to someone who is one their own, saying hello and smiling when you meet someone new. All good habits to get into #leadlap#KindnessMatters
A5: Our school has joined in with our division. We use the hashtag #rvskind to share all the great things happening! Many classes have a calendar for Dec for Kindness Acts! #LeadLAP
A5: Everyonecan be kind, So tap into that & model/teach Ss how to show kindness daily. A challenge can help make kindness a first thought instead of an afterthought. #LeadLap#kindness180
A5: This year we knew as a staff that kindness couldn't be a lone event. We have ongoing acts of kindness throughout coupled with global school read alouds that focus on empathy and empowerment and action. We've read Wonder and now Ugly. The snowball is rolling! #LeadLAP
A5 Create a challenge to instill a culture of kindness rather than small acts. Make our school about treating others with kindness, respect, empathy and shine those values on our communities. Work on always showing kindness & supporting each other. #LeadLAP
I am currently updating the Kindness180 challenges, but here is a sharable link to a google slide doc for #kindness180 ideas. Please share! https://t.co/2I2xlkuVa8
A kindness challenge will model acts of kindness to the kids and staff and hopefully they will keep the kindness ball rolling throughout the school year. #LeadLAP
A5: We use the Character Strong app and have gratitude and kindness walls. I love the idea of having students make their own calendars with kind deeds. #Leadlap
A5- I’m trying something new this year. Going to let staff partner up and give them 30min to go out in the community to do a RAK. They have to document it and share when we meet back up. #Leadlap
A5: my office is trashed yearly by grizz fans —I know it is coming — I have FUN with staff and Ss — they know I care about them in and out of school! Win-win for me! #LeadLAP
A5: Both viruses and mindsets are contagious, but only one is a choice!
We can choose to be kind or we can choose to be mean, but always remember they are both contagious 😷 #LeadLAP
A5: We have a class Virtue Jar! Every time the Ss show an act of kindness or one of our school's virtues, they get stones in our jar. At the end, we decide as a class how we should spread our kindness in the school or beyond!! #LeadLAP
A5: I believe when we take the first step of showing kindness it does become contagious. The feeling you get when you show an act of kindness is contagious. And it’s a feeling you want to relive over and over #leadlap
A5: We participare in #thekindclub monthly challenges! It creates a ‘Culture of Kindness’ & helps transform my Ss into KIND citizens! They are ready to change the world by spreading joy & kindness to others! #LeadLAP
A5: challenges bring mindfulness and awareness to the forefront. By using them with staff and students we give them the proverbial bow around the finger in times when they need a gentle reminder. #LEADLAP
A5: Taking the idea of spreading kindness back to our students in tech team, media club, and student senate to see how we can partner to create something great. #LeadLAP
We need to model with our students how to act when we are not having a good day. We are never perfect, we sometimes struggle to show kindness. Let us teach each other how to uplift and support when we are struggling. #LeadLAP
A3: I make sure to get up and workout at least 3x a week and a day of yoga. Helps clear the mind. I also listen to some music when I’m able to be in my office that makes me happy-Christmas music this time of year. Ha! #LeadLAP
A5: One of my counselors @MegRayburn started with a simple bulletin board where Ss could choose a random act of kindness to do. This #LeadLAP chat prompts me to think how we build on her idea for #weRrhs Ts & Ss.
A5: for my students, I teach them but more importantly I model for them what kindness is, and what it looks like. Teaching them how to show kindness with their words is the key #leadlap
Be nice to them instead of being annoyed. Thank them for any little bit they do. They will not understand what is going on and it might encourage change. If not it will make you smile anyway :) #leadlap

A6- great Q- I'm always asking my Ss how they can fix it when done something wrong- it's amazing what they come up with and it's always a Kind gesture, invite to play, sit with, write a note- #LeadLAP
The same way I treat everyone else - I learn their names and talk to them as often as possible, so that they're not only being talked to when they're in trouble. Makes a huge difference. #LeadLAP

A6: I often ask the students "How can we make this right? or How can we make this better for (student name)?" Makes the kids focus on helping the other student. #LeadLAP
A5: Inspired to have our #discosmhs St leaders create a kindness calendar for to share with our students and staff so we can be intentional about spreading kindness. #leadlap
A6: often discipline issues arise when someone is not being heard (peer to peer/teacher to student). By taking the time to let those involved be heard often we can get to a peaceful and long term resolution #leadlap
When students repeatedly act disrespectfully let’s not simply consequence by having them sit in silence after school; let’s also try to teach them how gratifying it is to be kind & respectful instead. Have 4 office walls but this is by far my favorite! #edchat
A6: This is a regular questions for me: "So, what are you going to do to fix this?" Then, I don't let them off the hook until I get an answer, and I follow up with "Thanks for taking care of that." #LeadLAP
A6- Often you can link the behavior with a natural consequence. Make sure to process afterwards and connect making it right with the feeling of kindness! #Leadlap
What do you talk about to them? I find I have nothing to say to my slackers b/c no one seems to know anything about them or they don't want to be talked to in any way. #leadlap
A6- I had a student that gut punched another kid on the playground. After we talked about it and went through consequences we discussed something nice they could do for that student. The 1st grade decided to make them a Card. Things are going great for both #LeadLAP
A6: Even when dealing with the most extreme disciplinary issues and outcomes, my focus is never lost: Given this outcome, what is this child’s next best step towards graduation, more options, and a better life. It’s my guiding principle. #LEADLAP
A6: In HS, there are lots of teachable moments about how to work w/peoplewevmay not like. Ss are surprised to learn adults work w/people we may not “like.” #LeadLAP#kindness180
A6 Those actions are normally mediated with isloation and punishment. What if the consequence was more mindful and involved kindess towards others? #leadlap
A6 When students turn up for a detention have something nice for them to do if they can tell you why they are there. Get them think of a random act of kindness they can do. Encouragement helps #leadlap
A6: It’s the perfect opportunity to turn a negative situation into a positive one! Have Ss brainstorm a way to right the ask wrong! It’s a life skill they need to know! #LeadLAP
A6) Discipline IS Kindness. Ss learn how to BE in the world by understanding what flies & what doesn’t. It is considerate of Ss when we have clear expectations and reasonable consequences. #LeadLAP
A6 I once saw on a school's office refferal form a sentence at the end requiring the teacher to write something positive about the kid they were sending to the office. #LeadLAP
#KindnessMatters Thank you to the #LeadLAP crew for joining us today and for spreading kindness this season and all year long. Thanks @staci_erickson2 for leading the way.
A6 Kindness is listening to everyone & treating them with respect. Never assume the why for a reaction/event. Take the time to listen & empathize. Consequences will often be necessary, but have them come from the heart. Always show kindness in response to poor judgment. #LeadLAP
A6: how can I help you..I am ready to listen...the root of a Ss issue is usually not what they are in the office for! Give them the time and space to explain what is happening #LeadLAP
A6. Had a group of 6th grade boys who couldn't seem to get along. They began eating lunch together, under my watchful eye, and each day decided what topic they would discuss. End of week root beer floats for getting along! #LeadLAP
One of my kids likes the band Korn. One of the guitarists is my distant cousin, so we talk about that. Another kid likes to fish, and so do I, so we talk about that. And I'm stubborn, so I'll keep working on kids until I find something. #LeadLAP

A6: The way we approach kids makes such a huge difference. Don’t react out of frustration. Take a moment to connect with the kid & find out what’s really going on & put yourself in their shoes. #leadlap
Love this. Something similar happened to my students. During our morning meeting they said a student was “bullying” them &they were afraid of that student. I brought that student in and we simply talked. Each had to show kindness during each other- now they best friends! #leadlap

It was GREAT connecting and chatting with all of you! I am filled with so much INSPIRATION!! Thanks for making my Saturday morning start off a positive note! Have a beautiful day, everyone! ❤️ #ChooseKind 😁 @burgess_shelley#LeadLAP
A6: We must avoid the temptation to forget about our own brokenness when dealing with the broken. Remembering this is an act of kindness in and of itself. #LeadLAP

A7: long drive to PDX to bring my daughter back to college. Think I’m going to bring a stack of thank yous to write to my colleagues and share how much I value and appreciate them. #leadlap
Maybe that has something to do with how they see themselves? They may be separated from their peers and friendship groups. It is not all about the class unfortunately #LeadLAP

A6: With discipline I work with students to recognize the impact they’ve had on others and have the student develop a plan to repair the relationship(s). #LeadLAP
Both my sons were told they weren't "good at math," 5th grade, diff states, 7 yrs apart. Both are engineers now. It's worth a few miscalculations. #Leadlap

A7: As a future school leader I plan on doing team building skills and trust activities. In addition- the staff should know and treat each child as if they were their own. So, I’ll incorporate weekly 15 minutes kindness meetings afterschool. #leadlap
