-
Questions starting now on ... Here we go...
-
Q1: What identifies a student to be categorized by Summer Slide? When is this analysis done by you, your team, your school?
-
A1: Good spot to start would be school free/reduced list. Summer slide starker in that category
-
, check out , going on right now.
TOPIC: Leading the decrease of summer slide
-
A1. Look at exit and entry data from various assessments. Look for changes in level/major drops in scores.
-
Universal screeners, interventionist & classroom teachers identify. Spring data hopefully shows growth...not always achievement
-
A1: We pick up on our "watch list" Ss, Essential students, Guided Academics, and then our incoming 5th graders. Also, iSTEEP.
-
Yes! What assessments? Reading, Math, all?
-
STAR Reading and Math to start. Can dig in deeper with DRA/DIBLES and Math assessments.
-
We try not to over react. We see a big jump from Sept. to oct. testing. really watch those kids we know about.
-
Lots of great topics are ready for next school year.
Follow me, suggest topics of need, let's keep building the chat!
-
Question 2 is on deck on . Get ready!
-
Evening All! Addison and I representing Region 2 coming to the chat live and in color from...Chuck E. Cheese!
-
Q2: What program or initiatives do you do now to attack the famous Summer Slide?
-
A1: always spend some time looking at the scores of students from 8th grade and having talks w/MS admin about "concern" ss
-
Do you mainly look at report card grades? Data Director info? Certain assessments?
Great collaborating w/ MS
-
A2: We have math teachers that give summer packets, online enrichment links, reading lists, Summer School, etc.
-
Doh! https://t.co/KEwCO065QH
-
-
A2.We offer a short summer school before school starts to help students get a head start on the year, but other then that not much right now
-
We are using PSAT scores this year, will also meet to discuss indvdl concerns like attendance/behavior/et.
-
A2: we are hosting a T1 Summer School for 1st, 4th and 5th graders. Very excited about this opportunity & summer camp too!
-
-
-
QUESTION 3 coming up on
We may be finishing early tonight...
Thanks to all for joining!
-
Q3: Is a balanced calendar better than the “normal” school year calendar? Do you think this would help?
-
That sounds great! All 9/10 ss take psat as well and 11th a college career readiness class. progressional data
-
-
A3: I believe it would help, but would have obstacles, esp at secondary level and may cause unintended consequences
-
A3: Learning about balanced calendar in holt with Supt Dave Hornak on June 17. Hope to gain more insight
-
A3. had to say better. In theory it makes sense, but very hard to get all stakeholders on board.
-
I would love to start before labor day, but balanced would present a big challenge to my AD brain
-
A3: I like the idea! It would certainly move some cheese & have it's challenges, but I think it'd have a positive impact on Ss.
-
-
Question going to come faster on ...
Get ready peeps...
-
Q4: How would your students benefit from extra school days per year?
-
coaches would end up w/o breaks. Already on diff. spring break and holidy breaks which cause issues
-
in terms of learning loss I agree, as well as keeping kids fed all summer
-
A4: Depends on the number of days and what instructional practices/delivery.
-
A4. Allow teachers more time to dig deep and do projects. (FUN) Not fell the rush to cover so much in a year.
-
QUESTION 5 coming up in 1 minute on
-
Q5: What would options for staffing be if the school year would lengthen by 20-30 school days? Salaries, alternative staff, etc?
-
A5: don't see many scenarios in which adding days WOULDN'T require additional funding. Whether for more staff or higher salaries
-
A5: If state wants more balanced calendars & addtl days, need to increase foundation. Schools and ts already doing more w less
-
Absolutely, the Labor Day law is very detrimental to poor and struggling students https://t.co/vdwgjbg2kq
-
-
Q3: Is a balanced calendar better than the “normal” school year calendar? Do you think this would help?
-
QUESTION 6 coming up on . Here we go...
-
Totally agree! The simply cost of utilities, busses, lunches, and staffing would be huge.
https://t.co/v06tiPAqSw
-
-
A5: If state wants more balanced calendars & addtl days, need to increase foundation. Schools and ts already doing more w less
-
Q5: balance calendar reduces need for summer school with less break lag time, so a possible savings in funding
-
A4: Extra days...consistent rigorous instruction, high expectations and blended learning everybody wins
-
A5. Not possible. Budgets are tight on current calendar. Would need funding to cover the cost of running a district each day
-
Great for teacher and admin PD as well https://t.co/vdwgjbg2kq
-
-
Q3: Is a balanced calendar better than the “normal” school year calendar? Do you think this would help?
-
Agree with this comment! So true! https://t.co/kJSu8S4rkz
-
-
Absolutely, the Labor Day law is very detrimental to poor and struggling students https://t.co/vdwgjbg2kq
-
-
Q3: Is a balanced calendar better than the “normal” school year calendar? Do you think this would help?
-
Q6: What logistics would you need to consider to lengthen the school year?
-
too many mandates and implied mandates from Lansing wo the freedom, trust, and money to make happen neg cycle
-
Q5: need data to show academic advantages of more frequent breaks and that tourism industry would still thrive.
-
A6. Cost per day for everything. is the bang worth the buck. Would need data to support over the long term.
-
A6 transportation, utilities, hourly employees just to name a few
-
A6: Air conditioning in buildings would be a must, increased utility and transportation costs
-
Hasn't the results of balanced schools been minimal to no difference in data? Thought that was what I read somewhere??
-
QUESTION 7 is on deck, get ready
-
Unfortunately a big barrier can be parents who still believe kids need long summer break https://t.co/26Go9Mj7bB
-
-
Q6: What logistics would you need to consider to lengthen the school year?
-
Q7: What can you school leverage community resources to help summer slide without lengthening the school year?
-
A4/5: Oh, we would need air conditioning too!
-
A5: Remind me of the negatives of additional time to master material, further DOK, and/or springboard into a new school year.;)
-
Sorry, . I had to take two minutes... A deer just came to our back sliding door.. SO cool for the family to see :)
-
A7: Would be great to work w local library to develop more in-depth summer reading program
-
A7 tough one, I think library reading programs, STEM fairs, and online programs are all good.
-
-
A7a I also think that as long as students are doing SOMETHING, the slide isn't that bad. Busy minds have better memories
-
Agreed. My kids take part, but I don't see many of my ss (high school) there during summer
-
LAST QUESTION coming up on .
QUESTION 8 is on deck...
-
A7: Coordinate with local rec depts and libraries to provide summer educational/enrichment programs.
-
Q8: What are some ideas and/or things you can do differently to try to decrease summer slide is your school or district?
-
I agree. An active mind is a healthy mind. Non-school learning and brain activity has benefits during school year
-
A8: We have to find ways to keep the doors open, programs running, and learning/thinking taking place.
-
Don't forget to follow me.
Starting next school year, tons of ed research and ideas from and beyond!
-
A8: online resources, set up opportunities for at-risk Ss to see staff off campus, check in system for read/math lab Ss
-
Giving students and parents online access and challenges throughout the summer on
Student incentives?
-
A8 teach less in more depth in standards allow
-
A8: Encourage use of Moby Max and RAZ-Kids during summer. Encourage/provide resources via digital comm.(Remind, Facebook, blog)
-
NGSS is actually pretty broad, especially at the middle level. Hopefully, curriculum allows for that
-
