No class will be 100% perfect. Learn to roll with that.
Think outside the box. Sit and get style learning does not work!! Use the curriculum to teach 21st century skills.

I wish I had had more opportunities to get to know the staff my 1st yr. Improved my 2nd yr, and that really helped.
You don't have to know everything ... it is ok to ask for help ... teaching can be fun!
To go boldly, believe in yourself and not worry about the other teachers down the hall.

Embrace the awesomeness of the kids sitting in your class you do them a disservice when you wish you had better kids ...

If you make a mistake to your Ss, apologize. They won't respect you less; they'll probably respect you more.

That it is OK to go off plan to engage and inspire your students.
What advice would I give myself as a first year teacher? Teach Less, they'll learn more.
Actively listen to all your students
Get to know your students ... build a positive relationship ... that is when something magical happens.

Find the teacher whose kids run to their classroom and ask them why?
As in many of our conversations, this advice is good for a new or aging heart. I know I have benefited!

shake their hand and get to know each one as an individual. I now ask how they are with the hand shake it has increased trust.
I love listening to other teachers ... getting that Whoa! that is cool moment and asking How'd you do that.

Good teaching does not come from a textbook or even a good teacher. Good teaching happens in memorable student experiences.

I was isolated my first 2yrs-it made it hard to find good ideas-but there was also no one to tell me no! I do wish I had a network.
