Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
A1) students scheduling their day, choosing activities appropriate for their learning styles, and working with partners that bring out the best in them #LATICchat
A2 My goals this year are to better use home groups and table journals. I think they are great and I’ve see their power during workshops but haven’t really used them as effectively in my own class. #LATICchat
A3: Building in time for students to intentionally reflect upon their learning using the rubric ... application, executive function, self-evaluation... all goals! #LATICchat
A3) right now as we near the end our of 1st ALU, I’ve been asking students what next steps they need to take on their learning path based on what they’ve concluded from checking off the rubric #LATICchat
A3) Begin the ALU with an activity where students ID what they already know and what they will need to learn to be successful. Revisit often. Make the connection between the rubric and the activity list. #LATICchat
A3 rubrics are everything!!! I think showing ss what the expectations are up front drives the idea that they earn their grades based on what they did. I also think it helps show as manageable pieces of the bigger project so they don’t feel overwhelmed. #LATICchat
A4) Today I asked students which of the activities they liked best and which was the most challenging from our current AL- was blown away by some of their responses. They’re so honest! #LATICchat
A4 I like to focus my qs to help scaffold the steps in the design process. I’ll ask what the plan was? How will you model/show your thinking? What can you change or improve? I also think it’s important to let ss ask questions too and lead discussions #LATICchat
A4). I have been asking them to give a specific example of an action: use a sand timer to manage time, choose a better place to sit to focus... #LATICchat
A4) One question I always liked during math was - "Where did the problem stop making sense?" It required careful thinking and sometimes they woudl be able to problem solve on their own! #LATICchat
A6) getting to know my students as individuals- facilitating instead of “teaching” at the front of the room leads to a huge increase in 1-on-1 time with ALL your kiddos #LATICchat
A6 this is a trick question because when it feels easy it’s just contrived equilibrium and then you realize you can dig in deeper. It’s never easy it just becomes more familiar #LATICchat
A7 formative assessments guide sgmls and help you develop activies that support both learning and practice. W/o it you’re creating assignment lists and your ss will not be as engaged in their learning. #LATICchat
A7: So often we think of formative assessments to tell us what students don't know so we can make interventions. Flip the thinking: leverage formative assessments to find out what they DO know & deepen that learning, as well as using the data to intervene where needed. #LATICchat
