Hello everyone and welcome to tonight's #P12Leaders Chat. We're very excited to have @RACzyz with us to discuss his book @4OClockFaculty. It's time to Revolutionize PD! #4OCF
Excited to learn with the #p12leaders leaders group tonight from @RACzyz His book has been vital in the growth of my staff this year! Look forward to tonight's discussion!
Yes! Make the extra efforts to engage them in professional learning opportunities .... professional development is done to them.... professional learning engages them #P12Leaders
PD is as useful and relevant as you make it. If it isn’t then you must step up and make it better for yourself. Ex would be twitter chats like this 👍🏼 #P12Leaders#4OCF
A1 - sometimes the facilitator doesn’t know better or haven’t been a part of meaningful PD so they stick with what is comfortable. Sometimes I’d say time constraints play a part as well...#P12Leaders
A1 I don't like this answer but compliance often = bad PD. Some PD just has to be completed because of mandates... It's the non mandated bad PD that is worrisome! #p12leaders
A1 Because not everyone is willing to take a risk to do something different. We complain about bad PD but don't want to take the effort to make it better. This isn't true of everyone, though. #P12Leaders
A1. I think bad PD continues to exist b/c some leaders are scared of the change. Others do not have the capacity or willingness to shift the way of learning. #P12Leaders
A1: It's because we don't start with they Why enough. People don't understand why they do something. We need to own our learning #StartWithTheWhy#Mywhy#p12leaders
A1: Unfortunately there isn't always a reflective piece to PD. Asking people whether the PD is useful is crucial. Choice is a critical component for successful PD. If there is no choice it becomes about compliance and less about collaboration and impact on students. #p12leaders
A1 I believe in many cases people see it as easier. Giving 100 people the same thing rather than giving each of them what they really need to grow has to by easier but not what is best. #P12Leaders
A1: It’s much easier for everyone involved. Easy to plan. Most likely no follow through. Quick and easy with no change as a result. Low pressure. #P12Leaders
A1: Cultures that value compliance over commitment. Leaders who feel the need to control. Fear of being vulnerable. Lack of risk-taking. Ugh. Can we just get away from all of this?? #4OCF#P12Leaders
I’d assume each admin knows better and equate it to @gcouros thought about teachers. There isn’t a T out there that wakes up wanting to be “that” teacher. As admins, we have to “want” to do better and then follow the “want” w/ actions. #P12Leaders
A1: laziness. Many facilitators do not understand adult learning theory. Also do not understand what teachers need today but rather perform PD relevant yesterday. #P12Leaders#4OCF
A1: Personalized PD is hard. Not every leader has the skill set to deliver relevant content to everyone. That’s why collaboration and growing leaders within a building is so important. Shared Responsibility! #P12Leaders
Yes! Just like w teaching, more front-end planning but the pay off is SO worth it. We're in the business of changing lives and being lazy just isn't an option. #P12Leaders
We've implemented video training for many of the mandated videos to mixed reviews. Nobody likes mandated training regardless the format, though doing it when I feel like it helps. #P12Leaders
Completely agree. While the responsibility to grow teachers ultimately falls on the admins shoulders, it doesn’t mean we need to do it alone. Empower teachers along the way and let’s grow each other! #P12Leaders
A2: hands down @burgessdaveand his #tlap sessions and message.
His philosophy on engaging learners by focus on our own passions and building relationships with kids #P12Leaders
A2 it was PD where I could choose different sessions to attend that were in smaller chunks....and so my quest to change the face of professional learning began.....I created the Professional Learning Institute at my school....all the way back in 2006 #P12Leaders
A2: hands down @burgessdave and his #tlap sessions and message.
His philosophy on engaging learners by focus on our own passions and building relationships with kids #P12Leaders
A2: I don't want sit and get where I'm talked at. I ❤️ PD where a tool or strategy is introduced & time given to determine best use for my Ss. #P12Leaders
Yes! Build capacity and the growth is exponential. This takes perseverance & lots of clarity & coherence but its doing it the right way, not the easy way. #bettertogether#P12Leaders
A2: a PD that spoke about how to talk to everyone in the room with creativity. The passion the deliverer @Snehalstocks expressed the message made you want more and made you feel you could do it and use it now in class #P12Leaders#4OCF
If we are going to present content to our staff it should have the components of an amazing lesson and be as engaging as we expect classrooms to be. Amen!!!
A2: Best PD are ones that I go into knowing a specific goal I want to improve. Instead of thinking the conference is going to make me better, Focus on ares I want to improve. Math Collaboration, students owning their learning, formative assessment, ect. #p12leaders
A2. All of the best PD sessions are when Ts are leading other Ts in topics that require deep learning like data analysis, curriculum revisions, etc. #P12Leaders
A2: We had a district wide Skype PD on Mastery Learning at the end of school last year. It was awesome to have the same message pushed out to 25 schools simultaneously. #P12Leaders
A2 The best PD for me was when @maryiwanski did JEDI (Journeys in Educational Design and Instruction) training for our teachers. It was the best because she is one of our teachers! #P12Leaders
A2 I don't like this question or the term "session." PD should be ongoing and embedded. Session implies the "spray and pray" (rural) or "drive-by" PD delivery method, which doesn't have lasting impact! #p12leaders
I like breakout sessions, but if there are too many back-to-back I lose time to process what I've learned. This leads to all info being lost in overwhelming quantity. #P12Leaders
A2: The best PD for me is always relevant to my current needs but inspiring enough to challenge me. I want to be pushed in my thinking. #P12Leaders#4OCF
A2: I agree @mrsgregory03 the best PD I attended involved choosing my own learning, as well - often it’s the PD I do for myself as a learner #P12Leaders
A2: Presenting at @EdcampNJ was a great experience because you got to learn from people like @JayBilly2 and @Rigor_Relevance Sharing ideas and collaborating fosters ideas and innovation. It is what true PD should be.....#P12Leaders
I don’t disagree. When teacher are talking with teachers great things can happen. Just be sure the teachers leading are simply filling in for admin. Sit and git with teachers leading is still sit and git. #P12Leaders
A2: When I was in the classroom, the best PD was relevant content presented by my peers where i had choice in what I attended. I remember this every time i am planning PD. #P12Leaders
I think the key to any conference or breakout sessions is to be ok with not attending each session. Take one off to allow for reflection time. #P12Leaders
A2. Meaningful learning took place because there was follow through. Ts continued conversation beyond the meeting with goals & plans. They collected data and reviewed results with further conversations. It was a continuous cycle of improvement. #P12Leaders
A3: I add it to my workday like Homework. It makes me better and my classes as well. We shouldn’t have to take things off the table that make us better overall #P12Leaders#4OCF
A3) make the mandatory stuff flexible. We can all learn about FERPA, RTK, and blood borne pathogens at our own pace and on our own time schedule. Offer the good stuff during our time and the experience will change! #4OCF#P12Leaders
A3 Once a month I have a 30 minute assembly with all of the students while staff does PD. PD is 8-9:15 and our assembly is 8:45-9:15. No change in start time for our kids. #P12Leaders
A3) anything that is one way information can be an email or posted to the faculty Google classroom. PD time is for teachers to learn with and from each other. #P12Leaders
Our next assembly is on Wednesday. We'll be talking more about the movie Wonder which we saw as a school. Great time for character education. #P12Leaders
A3: One instructional focus at a time• personalized needs and reflection for 1:1 PL• and use of Twitter PLNs to build capacity- then implement! That's my goal! #P12Leaders ❤️☠️
A3 I struggle with mandated paperwork like lesson plans or unit maps. If we feed our staff and grow them into greater teachers we will not need to collect everyone’s lessons, just the few that truly need help growing in that area. #P12Leaders
A3: I'd rather put things on the table....like covering a class for a teacher so they can do PD with their colleagues. We model what we get! If PD is truly valued then as an admin, I must make it a priority..... #P12Leaders
A3: #DitchGrades, keep first things first, and focus on the positive. I spend way to much time on the 20% that goes wrong instead of focusing on the 80% that went well. #p12leaders
A3: I think admins need to look at work-flow process (i.e., attendance, forms, policies) & evaluate the value-added of individual tasks/mandates. If it is inefficient, redundant, or adds low-value, it should be removed to free up time in the existing school day. #P12Leaders
A3: Host voluntary learning sessions outside of mandated PD. Give those interested a chance to take responsibility for their own learning! #4OCF#P12Leaders
A3: I'm always amazed that we spend weeks decorating for Homecoming but never seem to have the time for meaningful professional development. All about priorities! #P12Leaders
A3. School leaders have to be creative with the time they already have. If they are able to modify school day, schedule, or requirements of staff during the day to provide short bursts of meaningful PD. Little things over time will change the culture. #P12Leaders
A3: the notion that PD happens during faculty meetings, in services and PLC... PD can happen the whole day and in small intervals of time... classroom pineapple observations, 15 minute power PD sessions, a twitter chat or coaching conversations can all be PD #P12Leaders
A3 Working on setting up a digital academy so my staff can choose their own PD whenever they find time and interest... If we can't take much off the plate at least we can make the menu flexible! #p12leaders
But don’t get me wrong! We are on the same page. Teachers will replicate what’s been done to them, just like admins do. Gotta break the cycle. #P12Leaders
A4: Find your online tribe - twitter, online groups, EdCamps... get a group together for Margarita Mondays & talk shop for 1 hour and NO SHOP for another! #4OCF#P12Leaders
A4 I went to twitter and Voxer but I also share edcamps with my teacher peeps and honor the extra time they put in by subbing out other days. #P12Leaders
A4: This where you PLNs come in to play! I have connected with the most ELITE educators on the planet via reading ExExExCellent books and PLNs! Doing an AWESOME study now with @smgaillard on #MomentMakers#P12Leaders
❤️☠️🌟
Love anything "flipped". Other than an EdCamp format, how can we "flip" PD in our schools? How about we let our students teach the adults (technology). #P12Leaders
A4 twitter! Podcasts! @ASCAtweets has lots for #schoolcounselors I like to leave articles in random spots around school, post stuff on bathroom walls!! #P12Leaders
Made this shift in our opening day staff meeting this year. Sent a long email ahead of time with business items and warned the staff it would be the only long email I sent all year. That way we could focus on more important, engaging activities as a staff. #p12leaders
A4) I have a PD committee of 2 admins and 3 teachers-teachers can make requests to attend out of district PD and we discuss/vote. The group has a small budget but at least it's an avenue for teacher choice beyond our menu days. #P12Leaders
A4: Find your tribe and expand your #PLN. They will support and challenge you in so many awesome ways. Twitter & Voxer are both awesome tools for this. #P12Leaders#4OCF
A4 Almost all of my personal PD starts from Twitter. Connecting with the right amazing people. Finding new worthwhile books to read. Chatting with people I would never have a chance to talk with otherwise. Twitter closes the PD gap!! #P12Leaders
A4. However, there are other ways besides #edcamps like chatting on @Twitter, joining a book club, Google+ educational community, @voxer groups, etc. #P12Leaders
A4: Twitter gets the ball rolling, voxer creates the conversation, and meeting educators F2F, at a conference, develops a collaborative colleague. #P12Leaders
A2- I went to a new principals training 14 years ago at my NASSP affiliate , Clas, it was really informative about things you don’t learn in college. Nothing like this pic! #P12Leaders
I've officially declared email dead. I used to send to hundreds of people in an email blast and would not get a single response. I started making short, 5-minutes video messages and vastly improved engagement. #P12Leaders
The PD is run by a variety of educators in our district. I still am part of the PD, but only the first 45 minutes. I run the assembly with limited assistance from other staff. #P12Leaders
A4: Combine social time and PD time with a local #PLN@ice_il chapters are using a #patiopd model & they’ve been productive AND fun! And most are FREE! #p12leaders
A4: TWITTER. We have no excuse for not being able to learn and collaborate with others. I have been inspired and learn so much from this little bird. I still remember sharing something and getting feedback from @SaiaStacy that changed my lesson for the next day. #p12leaders
Me too! I've started w a small group of social media interns. It's gone more slowly than I was anticipating but everytime I collaborate w them, they amaze me w their ideas. #P12Leaders
A5: We have embedded tech leaders in depts give feedback as to what is needed - then we offer a variety of sessions for staff to sign up for #4OCF#P12Leaders
A5 At our #peqsummit the Ts lead a large number of sessions, to the point that As are almost entirely out of the presentation rotation! Ts teach their interests and select what they're interested in (though with more prep than edcamp)! #p12leaders
A5) Say what you want, but the power of post-it notes are infectious. It keeps people organized, allows to write thoughts, and stick to ideas and questions. #4OCF#P12Leaders
A5: I send out "One Cool Thing" email weekly - short, easy, no commitment ideas & info. Pick & choose what you want to try... delete the rest #4OCF#P12Leaders
A5) I survey and each online evaluation form has an open ended question asking what the teacher would to learn and/or what the teacher would like to present. It's my way of knowing how to guide our learning through the year. #P12Leaders
A5: Switch up your staff meetings. I do bring and brag activities where teachers share with each other about various topics like assessment, PBL, etc. I use @Flipgrid to share out ideas as well. Teachers should expect the unexpected for any meeting! #p12leaders
A5) I was once told that sharing best practice is not an option but rather an obligation and it changed my perspective on professional development and my role as an educator. #p12leaders
A5: Go edCamp-style and give the agenda over to the Ts. Also, be in touch w what your Ts need & want so you are offering relevant & meaningful options. #P12Leaders#4OCF
A5: We do gamified PD that allows Ts to choose PD Tracks and provides input form to ask for specific types of PD. The PD track always has some classroom application which looks different for everyone! #P12Leaders
A5 needs assessment and then send out a call for presenters who are strong in the areas others want growth! When Ts feel heard they are more invested! #P12Leaders
A5 As a part of my growth plan this year I am doing quarterly staff surveys. We cant give staff options if we don’t know what they need or what they are thinking. Listen to your staff first!!! #P12Leaders
I ❤️ the picnic idea. A great end of the year activity. Teachers could take new ideas home for the summer, rework, and implement in the fall. #P12Leaders
A5) Create the culture that PD is not about perfection but rather taking risks so that learning will enhance our ability to ensure #LearningForAll. #p12leaders
We have a huge campus with about 20 staff bathrooms, but more opportunity to differentiate! Bathroom PD for kinder teachers is different than for 5th grade!? #p12leaders

Another great place for PD is the @TeacherCast Network. Be sure to check it out at https://t.co/hDMOSfz9i3. Great podcasts, blog posts and timely advance for educators at all levels. #P12Leaders
A5: have teachers observe each other and ask reflective questions - also have teachers share about awesome things they are doing or learning about #P12Leaders
A6 I would love time to have a #techslam during PD so everyone can get a taste of new #edtech, but w/ time dedicated for followup and actual training on interesting techs! #p12leaders
A6: More time is needed for teachers to observe each other. I help cover classes and try to accommodate with scheduling. Great exercise for teachers to see each other! #p12leaders
A6) I'm working on mindfulness and teacher wellness this year. I'd love more time to dedicate to their wellness. I ask a lot of my teachers and I want to acknowledge their need to be okay while we all strive for our next best. #P12Leaders
A6 I really need growth in school/education finance. Very little of this in my masters admin coursework. I think the best way for this to happen is to find a mentor willing to share the do’s, donts, and best practices. #P12Leaders
A6: Be creative & find ways to sprinkle PD in - often have PD brain breaks. Also explore online opportunities such as school twitter chats. #p12leaders
Thanks to @Laura_Jennaro I want more educators to experiment with #Voxer. We might do a scavenger hunt to introduce it to everyone and then incorporate it as a feedback tool. #p12leaders
I agree! I don’t currently work in a culture that even if there were time, this would be the focus. The value of learning from other admin is invaluable. #p12leaders
Q7 If you have a question or would like to share an idea, make sure to reach out to your PLN and give them a call. I'll be doing that tomorrow. Right, @McLane_Ryan? #P12Leaders
A6) I want to create the opportunity to have transparent conversation about the equity and opportunity gaps within our school to help shape the future. We are on that path. #p12leaders
YES! We are in our 3rd monthly twitter chat - all T-led and it rocks! #TMGeniusChat I'd love to collaborate at some point bc that would just be #awesomesauce#P12Leaders#4OCF

If you want to join the #P12Leaders Voxer Group, just send me your Voxer handle. We have an amazing group of school leaders always eager to share new ideas.
A7 I want to explore pineapple charts and #observeme more. There are great things going on in every school. We just have to find a way for everyone to see it. #P12Leaders
Thanks everyone for an awesome chat! Thanks @RACzyz for moderating and everyone for getting us trending! Don't forget to follow those with ideas that interest or challenge you! #p12leaders
A7) I will continue to grow my #PLN as they extend beyond the artificial boundaries that once had the ability to stagnate our growth. My #PLN is my my #JusticeLeague. #p12leaders
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas from the #P12Leaders Chat & Voxer Group. Thanks for making our group one of the very best for sharing great ideas and best practices in school leadership.
