Q1. How is digital citizenship taught at your school? Is there an emphasis on Acceptable or Responsible Use of technology? What does that look like? #P12Leaders
Jeremy in Connecticut here. Parent and #digcitsummit alum. Excited for one of my favorite topics by one of my favorite experts on it! #digcit#P12Leaders

Good evening @JCasaTodd and #P12Leaders Jon Bartelt, Supt from the western burbs of Chicago (the great Bloomingdale SD 13 for those in the know). Digital citizenship is integrated through the work of our tech coaches and teachers.
A1. Love how Kayla Delzer @TopDogTeaching has a Digital Citizenship Boot Camp at the beginning of the year, but then kids use their skills to be the Instagrammer of the Day & Tweeter of the Day @TopDogKids! Her kids understand responsible use because they practice it! #P12Leaders
A1) All I know about digcit at the middle school level (not sure about our elementary school) is from a PTO meeting I happened to attend. Their focus is on dangers, although it wasn't presented in an overly negative way. But I'd like to see a focus on the positive. #P12Leaders

Q1. How is digital citizenship taught at your school? Is there an emphasis on Acceptable or Responsible Use of technology? What does that look like? #P12Leaders
A1: Digital citizenship is taught as part of using the tool (in our case, the Chromebook) through projects in the classroom in a manner and method that is understood by the students. SD13 is a Pre-K to 8th grade district. #P12Leaders

A2: The consent of parents, the presence of trolls, the maturity level of the student all play a role. But I agree that it is our responsibility to teach the skills to be successful, even with social media. #P12Leaders
A2) The biggest barrier is a negative attitude and mindset about social media, particularly from adults. Overcome them through #digcit education of everyone, adults and students, and establishing a school-wide goal to #UseTech4Good. #P12Leaders
Social media is about who you follow. I have rarely had any issues because I follow people and organizations who inspire. I spend lots of time sharing this with parents--they don't know what they don't know #P12Leaders
A2.2: Dry runs on non-electronic platforms (bulletin boards) help students understand the process, the risks, and the promise without the Nasty (yes, that's what I calling it) #P12Leaders
A2: Teachers may not feel equipped to help students because they don't know alot about platforms & tools. Support for their learning is important as is Admin modeling & leadership #P12Leaders
A4 Show students and teachers that social media isn’t just about entertainment. Invite Ss to solve a problem, connect w/ experts, other classes. Check out @MathInTheNews for Math learning, @HelentheShark a tagged White Shark to name a few #P12Leaders
A3) Recognize it may take time for their audience (families, others in the school) to become accustomed to these accounts if they aren't already. Relentlessly push the positive but don't push them. #P12Leaders
A4: The Hashtag helps curate great content and allows for teachers to report out the accomplishments being made in the classroom. D13 uses #ilbsd13 for reporting out and #BSD13Learns for sharing great strategies with each other. #P12Leaders
a4 Social media doesn't have to be entirely public. When I present, I use interactive tools like Nearpod, Peardeck & Padlet wherewith participants begin to appreciate the interaction w/o immediately going public. #p12leaders
Totally agree / trying to avoid connectivity or even control it to a great extent doesn’t keep kids from being connected - we need to be in the digital “playground” to help kids learn to use the tools and be safe themselves and caring to others #P12Leaders
Some of those who aren't on here hear the negative from the media and think Twitter is a political hellscape. It's important to emphasize that you shape your timeline by whom you follow. Make it about what matters to you. #P12Leaders

A4 Love how @ONEDSschat explore issues of #digcit and other topics via twitter chat for students! It’s a perfect example of showing kids how to use social media differently AND learn about others #P12Leaders
A5) It begins by trusting them -- letting them use these tools in the classroom. Allow them to choose what they'd like to focus on. Everyone cares about something. #UseTech4Good#P12Leaders
A5.2: The @LPInteract club through @rotary6440 promotes several important local causes through their Twitter account. I follow them and support their work in the community. #P12Leaders
Yes, and I like how you've said "entirely," as it may be most effective when there's some degree of public audience. But it's great for students to get accustomed to online norms through other, more private means. #P12Leaders
Q6. Digital Leadership is about making a positive difference in someone's life (both on and offline). What are some of the ways we can (or you have) used technology and social media to have a positive impact on others? #P12Leaders
A6: Our Book Club worked hard to raise funds for solar-powered speakers, MP3 player. Recorded favourite stories for @COHU_Official to promote #literacy#P12Leaders
Q6. Digital Leadership is about making a positive difference in someone's life (both on and offline). What are some of the ways we can (or you have) used technology and social media to have a positive impact on others? #P12Leaders
A6: This platform is made to build people to be confident, caring leaders willing to share their expertise with one another to benefit the children and families we serve. #P12Leaders
A6: When Ss at our school learned about a refugee at our school seeking asylum they wrote letters, made her video go viral, shared and cared. #P12Leaders
A6: We must find ways to model the use of social media with positive shout-outs and uplifting quotes to maintain positivity within our schools. A school hashtag is a great place to start. #P12Leaders
Agree! Yes so many people would argue that it does the opposite! Such a testament to the inspiring educational community we have built here! I feel like it's time to empower our students to see how different social media could be as well. #P12Leaders
Definitely!! I also think that we need our kids (and families) to interact with us in positive ways. Love @GustafsonBrad 's #booktalks as an example of this #P12Leaders
Yeah, and at the same time I wouldn't limit it by where they already are. A goal here is to grow everyone in the process, families included. Maybe start where they are, then lead them. #P12Leaders
https://t.co/jOD7TvnJ0U Leadership happens when students follow their passions or become passionate about a cause or idea. What has moved your students to action? #P12Leaders
The while idea of "branding" your school is more about "celebrating success" and "telling your story" and less about staging the perfect environment. Be authentic and real when you use social media to interact within your school and community. #P12Leaders
A6: This platform is made to build people to be confident, caring leaders willing to share their expertise with one another to benefit the children and families we serve. #P12Leaders
Q8: How might we invite parents to have conversations with us about the role of social media in school today? What are some strategies you have used? #P12Leaders
A6: We must find ways to model the use of social media with positive shout-outs and uplifting quotes to maintain positivity within our schools. A school hashtag is a great place to start. #P12Leaders
Now that's the conundrum of the century! How do we help others to see this "other" world and to help create it. I know I shout it from every rooftop! #bettertogether#P12Leaders
A6: When Ss at our school learned about a refugee at our school seeking asylum they wrote letters, made her video go viral, shared and cared. #P12Leaders
A7: I think a conversation about screen time is appropriate at all age levels. But social media does not have to be the root of all evil. It's also a valuable learning platform as young people are turning to social networks as their primary source for news. #P12Leaders
It is easier for educators as there is a strong presence, but perhaps if you organize the chat with another district's PTO at the same time, you build the connections that ultimately benefit communities. #P12Leaders
A8) Invite parents to chats like this! If you're a connected teacher, you're in a great position to bring others with you. Think of a #PLN as truly encompassing all stakeholders in the educational realm, not just fellow professional educators. #P12Leaders
Q8: How might we invite parents to have conversations with us about the role of social media in school today? What are some strategies you have used? #P12Leaders
A9: My former school district had a student EdCamp and spent one whole day talking about cyber bullying and issues important to kids. Student voice is very powerful so let them be part of solutions. #P12Leaders
A9: Roleplaying helps in the classroom and demonstrating how important it is to treat others as you wish to be treated using social media tools is another responsibility of schools. #P12Leaders#LovePublicEducation

A9) Online spaces provide a prime opportunity to model positive interactions with others because we're all in the same space. That modeling becomes just as relevant offline. #P12Leaders
Yeah, we're preaching to the choir here. The toughest challenge may be getting school leaders on board, because once they are, they can lead the effort. #P12Leaders
