Hey #fearlessedchat! Michael A. from #122edchat in Chicago. Cars in the future should be able to serve me pizza. I don't know. I really have a hankering for pizza. And they should fly, like the Jetsons.
Hi #fearlessedchat! Megan, 8th Science and co-founder of #122edchat. Hoping some of the #rowvastrong family will pop in for this chat about being #futureready! Cars will absolutely be like the one in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I hope.
Phil Strunk from Northern VA signing in. I teach 7th grade US History II. Still hoping cars will be replaced by YT-1300s (Millennium Falcons). #fearlessedchat
Amy! 6th grade reading teacher from Texas! Cars in the future...The thought terrifies me! Will it improve driving and people's ability to stop at stop signs? lol #fearlessedchat
Adam from Cincinnati, 7/8 grade history - I don't know what to expect about cars, but a lady I know owns a Tesla and it's pretty cool! It gets updates like a an Iphone #fearlessedchat
A1: Collaboration. Screens have diminished the ability to communicate face-to-face, so we have to make sure we are providing BOTH digital and "live" collaboration opportunities for our students. #fearlessedchat
A1: Critical thinking. I think that is an essential, timeless skill. Especially now that you can google pretty much anything, students need to be able to apply what they googled to decipher meaning. #fearlessedchat
A1 GROWTH MINDSET. Nothing says you’re ready to tackle the future quite as much as not being discouraged by every single road block that you will inevitably hit #fearlessedchat
Q1: Just one skill? They need to be INNOVATIVE thinkers. (I can think of so many more. My Ss were just talking about this this morning!) #fearlessedchat
A1 I agree with @MrMac_Walker about growth mindset and being a self starter. When a kid gets a new phone they have it setup in a matter of minutes. They need to apply that to life #fearlessedchat
A1: Collaboration. Screens have diminished the ability to communicate face-to-face, so we have to make sure we are providing BOTH digital and "live" collaboration opportunities for our students. #fearlessedchat
A1: Critical thinking skills are as vital now as ever before. Navigating and analyzing the information thrown at them from multiple sources in multiple formats is crucial. #fearlessedchat
A1: being able to collaborateon projects. This is a skill that many companies say ppl are lacking. Everyone would rather just do it themselves but then you miss so many opportunities and different perspectives #futureready#FearlessedChat
A1: Communication. So often, students get stuck in the ways of technology. Face-to-face communication is so necessary to succeed in the real world. #fearlessedchat
A1 Self advocating is a huge future-ready (and a need-it-now) skill for students. How can students admit, ask for, and find the right help when needed? #fearlessedchat
A1: Continuing to build assignments that force them to apply knowledge. Tasks like my Teddy Roosevelt Museum project, Roaring Twenties websites, RAFTs, and others have helped me students figure out how to apply that. #fearlessedchat
A2: In the @SmartLab_tweets Lab, the opportunity to innovate, collaborate, create, discuss, and problem solve are on display daily. Our hope is that this mentality will permeate the rest of the building. #fearlessedchat
A2 to get Ss to collaborate and communicate we just need to get out of their way! Student Centered classrooms are a must! #fearlessedchat#transformprosper
Q2: Students need opportunities to be creative, collaborate with others, and get messy with their ideas. They need to plan, reason through things, and redesign based on flaws and problems they forsee. Challenging in ELA...but possible. #fearlessedchat
A2 Sharing your own struggles in life, sports, teaching, can really help the Ss see how you have used a growth mindset to get where you are today. Sharing examples of what would’ve happened if you stopped and said I can’t... #FearlessEdChat
A1: Critical thinking is the skill that makes the student is future ready. Being able to think critically allow one to make decisions which shapes one life. This allows one to take risk, and be a free thinker. #fearlessedchat
A2. Just yesterday... Great example. Stopped to work with partners working to create infographic. Growing frustrated (not easy process!). We stopped to reflect on what it takes to learn a new skill! Make mistakes! Risks! #GrowthMindset#fearlessedchat
A2: Give them texts to read that make them question and reflect. Discussion, discussion, discussion. Ask them hard questions and allow them to collaborate to find the answers. Illustrate how to assess for bias. #fearlessedchat
A2 I 'encourage" self advocacy by putting the onus on the kids to find solutions to their problems/answers to their Qs...I also teach through #inquiry wherever possible which has this skill as an integral part of problem solving. #fearlessedchat
A2 providing opportunities for Ss to learn/explore through #pbl and pushing their thinking, when they shared essential Qs, other Ss wrote down their Qs as well, expanded their thinking #fearlessedchat
Hey, all! Excited to join #fearlessedchat for the first time this evening. I'm Linda, elementary AP, from Winchester, VA. I imagine - and hope - we will no longer be dependent on gasoline-powered vehicles #AGirlCanDream
It is so important for them to know that FAILURE is not the end - you pick up and keep going!!!!! Okay now what? Should be the response not "I'm done.". #fearlessedchat
A2 Sharing your own struggles in life, sports, teaching, can really help the Ss see how you have used a growth mindset to get where you are today. Sharing examples of what would’ve happened if you stopped and said I can’t... #FearlessEdChat
A2: I try to come up with different things for Ss that have them get creative - for example, we discussed Feudalism, then I gave them an Oreo and said create something with an oreo that shows Feudalism - explain your creation. #fearlessedchat
And... This answers the question because... I find students often want to stop when the thinking gets tough when problem solving. Need to encourage them and keep plugging until they succeed when going gets tough!
#fearlessedchat

Hi #fearlessedchat Vanessa Heller: #inquiry#PBL and #GiftedEd trainer and humanities teacher from Southern California. Just jumping in for a second....seriously busy chat night!
From what I’ve seen it also appears that they are given a learning environment that if they fail, it’s not the end of the world it’s just trial #1. SO important to be able to make mistakes! #fearlessedchat
A2: In the @SmartLab_tweets Lab, the opportunity to innovate, collaborate, create, discuss, and problem solve are on display daily. Our hope is that this mentality will permeate the rest of the building. #fearlessedchat
I think our students need more face to face time in the classroom! Although I’m big tech fan, in every job you will ever do, you have to be able to communicate! #fearlessedchat
A3: Convincing them that they can & will change the world. Had that conversation with a group today when discussing climate change & global warming. They walked out truly believing that they WOULD be the difference between repeating history & making a difference! #fearlessedchat
A3: TBH, teachers with fixed mindsets who believe that students cannot grow or that a particular student just "can't learn." Makes me so frustrated when I hear that. Maybe if we prepped students for THEIR future not OUR past, you could see they can learn!! #fearlessedchat
A3: The biggest hurdle for students is overcoming the fear of struggling with the text and of being incorrect at times. We have to show them that it is okay to have a wrong answer from time to time. It is how we grow. #fearlessedchat
A3 Sometimes we are the biggest hurdle. If we don't get over our fear of failure, how can we teach our Ss to thrive in a future of unknowns. I try to help Ts feel safe as they try new things and make sure they focus on what went right #fearlessedchat
A3 The misconception that future ready means being proficient with technology. Share with students all of the non-technology-based tools that they already have in their tool belts that they are going to use in the future #fearlessedchat
A3: The biggest hurdle for students is overcoming the fear of struggling with the text and of being incorrect at times. We have to show them that it is okay to have a wrong answer from time to time. It is how we grow. #fearlessedchat
A3: The biggest hurdles are getting Ss to critically think/reflect, effectively collaborate, and realize that failure is ok - these frustrated me at the beginning of the year, but they are making small strides! #fearlessedchat
Q3: The biggest hurdle would be teaching them to persevere. It IS easy to give up, it IS easy to let the struggle take over, and it IS tempting to take the easy way or make excuses. But the results when one doesn't give in are priceless! #fearlessedchat
A1 - Our Ss need to be able to find a healthy balance between technology & interpersonal skills. Many of our youngsters are so absorbed in their technological "relationships" that they aren't developing the skills necessary for healthy, meaningful relationships. #fearlessedchat
I have to name two "skills", or characteristics that make someone "future-ready". They are HUMILITY & TENACITY. Without the first, one would believe there's no room for improvement, and without the second, one would give up when life showed them otherwise. #fearlessedchat
agreed, it is not about the tech, the tech will not be the same in the future and Ss need skills to be prepared for anything, so collab, communication, prob solving, #fearlessedchat
A3: parents, parents keep looking for the ways they were taught in school but modern research says those old practices were bad! Yet parents hate group work, love direct instruction, worksheets, etc. #FearlessedChat
A3 Biggest hurdle is teaching like we did decades ago! Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, but constantly assess what works well w/ kids you have in front of you (not the ones you had 20 years ago). Customize as needed & stay up to date on #BestPractices#fearlessedchat
A4B: Be ruthless in your pursuit of greatness for yourself, and it will translate into a passion that your students will be unable to avoid. #fearlessedchat
A4: Being here tonight. We are doing our part to put on a better show tomorrow. Actively seeking to improve on what we are already doing. Not being satisifed with average. Always learning. #fearlessedchat
Q4: Embracing technology, trying new things, accept the "same old way" may not be effective anymore (if it ever was)... This list could also go on and on. Generally, everything we ask of students, we must be willing to do also. #fearlessedchat
A4: Seek out other professionals and learn from them. Read books and blogs! My favorite thing to do right now is to participate in Twitter chats. I have been learning so much from my Twitter plns. #fearlessedchat
A4 don’t be too proud to ask for help. Don’t forget to listen to the people that came before you and those right behind you there’s a really good chance they know something you don’t. Learn something new every day. #fearlessedchat
A4: have a growth mindset, never stop learning and looking for new ways to reach your kids. Try new things, don’t be afraid to fail and grow. Utilize your PLN! #piratepln#FearlessedChat
A4: I'm preparing to be future ready by pushing myself to take risks, pushing myself out of my comfort zone - I expect Ss to do these things, I should expect this of myself. - participating in twitter chats, participating in #IMMOOC etc.. #fearlessedchat
Teachable is my favorite quality. It’s so versatile. From being coachable in sports to teachable in every day life it really is an invaluable skill #fearlessedchat
A4 by staying connected with PLN and continuing to learn and reflect, co-learn with Ss, so important to keep pushing ourselves to try new things, share our stories #fearlessedchat
A2 - Ts can help Ss develop interpersonal skills by providing opportunities for collaboration & communication. Find a way for Ss to present info to stakeholders (staff, admin, parents, community members) and let them see the benefits of sharing their voice. #Fearlessedchat
A4b: Don't forget to learn from your students! They can teach us a lot too! They are always showing me new technology that they would like to use in the classroom! #fearlessedchat

A4. Don't stop growing. As fast as the world is changing, we can all learn at least 1 new thing daily. That's why I love Twitter Chats. I have learned so much from Y'all! #fearlessedchat
A4. For me, it has been connecting on Twitter and Voxer by keeping in touch with brilliant minds via social media. I hate to say it... Many are going to be "left in the dust" if they are not connected. #fearlessedchat
A3 - Getting some Ts on board with trying new things. Even when "given the green light", Ts are resistant to take risks. "We don't have time" or "When will I have time to do that?!" is often heard. My thoughts: We don't have the time to NOT try new things. #Fearlessedchat
Thank you so much to all of the #fearlessedchat and #122edchat families for making each Wednesday night such a blast! I am sad to go on hiatus, but it is what is best for family and I! Can't wait to show you all baby Miller!
@gcouros loves to talk about how we have exactly as much time as we make for things that are important to us. Literally could not agree more! #fearlessedchat

So often, I ask students to Google something because I am not the gatekeeper of info. It's become easier and easier. Such an important future-ready skill for them, anyway! #fearlessedchat
Ryan. Seriously. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. I know I say it all the time, but you have unknowingly saved me so many times. You're one of my heroes. Your students, and your own children, are lucky to have you. THANK YOU for all that you do. #fearlessedchat
The feeling is mutual my friend. Thank you for all your support and wisdom! I will pop in #122edchat over the next few months too. Grateful for you. #fearlessedchat
Without you, I don’t know @_on11@megan_hacholski@DMooreSpanish , theres no Flipgrid for me, I probably don’t make breakouts. You made me, and those around me, SO much better. Thank you, truly. #fearlessedchat

They will come around eventually. For a long time, I didn't really see the point with Twitter, & now I can't get enough of it. :) Maybe if you present what you have learned from the Twitter chats at a staff meeting, they will get into it. Good Luck! #fearlessedchat
A3 A huge hurdle is traditional factory model of public schooling... 50 minute periods and other constraints butt heads with the #inquiry#pbl model (which i advocate for strongly) #fearlessedchat
A3. Jumping in late. So many chats, so little time! I think one hurdle is that most Ss havent been taught how to use or navigate specific tools/tech/internet. I try to create lessons for Ss to explore, create, cite, etc. There is so much we think Ss already know. #fearlessedchat
A5. But I just found you...you can't go away! ;-) Nah, I totally understand...I have baby #4 on the way. I am thinking a lot of this is in your future. Congrats! #fearlessedchat
