Trick or Treat #edtechchat Our Halloween page https://t.co/oPHIoOkdna has links for Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science with many learning activities, lessons and videos. Enjoy!
I am Jordan, an Elementary Education major at Trine University. I am also a high school varsity wrestling coach in my hometown! I am excited about this chat because I am in an Education Technology class with @mltolin and trying my best to be able to integrate tech! #edtechchat
@susiegronseth There are lots out there. #Edtechchat is going on right now. #Formative is another great one. I'm sure since you posted to #ISTETEN you'll get other responses.
Hello everyone!! I'm Leanne and I'm a sophomore at UW-Platteville! I'm currently taking an edmedia class at college so I'm excited to see what others have to say about the topic! #edtechchat
A1. I think the best method would be too show them all of the benefits tech can bring to your classroom. Also show step by step how to use the programs. #EdTechChat#CCED334
A1) The best way to deal with these "zombies" is a triple head-shot of professional development with actionable tips, sample lesson plans, and validation/proof of the value the tech tools bring to the classroom #edtechchat. Also, Rule #1: Cardio ;) #Zombieland
Q1. Expose them to all of the technology that they could possibly use and be sure to show them how beneficial and effective it can be to what they may do! #edtechchat
A1: Just as I would a student...Scaffold, introduce tech in a minor part of their lesson (try @quizizz, present with @PearDeck, or record a 5 min lecture with @Screencastify) & show them how it will benefit THEM..Ss will follow right after #edtechchat
#edtechchat A1: Stay patient and walk them through controls and how to do certain things. Give step by step lists of instructions or to-do's to let them become familiar with everything.
Armed with a barbed wire baseball bat named Lucille, I gently encourage them to take a risk in their teaching and try to use Tech to change one thing they hate about teaching or their curriculum!
#edtechchat
A1 Let the zombies stumble into the room and feast their loosely fastened eyes on student work. Modeling is important as well as connecting reluctant adopters' curriculum to #edtech tools. #edtechchat
A1)

#edtechchat
By showing our educators how they can appropriately incorporate technology (of all different kinds) into their activity lessons. This keeps it modern and fun for students #edtechchat
I am not seeing intentional Zombies ... what I see are ignorant Zombies ... slogging through their day unaware of what is out there, but when they sniff out something good the attack it like fresh brains #edtechchat
A1) Slow down the process and make the content easier for students to understand, and encourage them to have a try on different kinds of technology tools.
#edtechchat
A1) I would expose them as much as possible and give the zombies the opportunity to experience tech for themselves. Professional development! Itโs Importnt to utilize tech, and by giving the zombies an opportunity to experience it aNd Its Positive components #EdTechChat#CCED336
#edtechchat You try to get them to share little bits of information at a time. Then pieces can be put together. Don't make them give info all at once, then they definitely won't.
I have also found that a lot of these zombies really are not. They have a few tools they use really well. The challenge, for me, is to get them to expand their horizons a bit. #edtechchat
FREE downloads of many elem math materials- here: https://t.co/FCmc2xFU6v โฆ โฆ โฆ Follow me on TPT - I add new ideas and materials all the time. #4thchat#edtechchat
A1) I would say spend a specific class with the students and help anyone who needs help. You could also spend time with specific students before/after school or during your free period if needed! #edtechchat#teacherbytrine#ED463
#edtechchat You try to get them to share little bits of information at a time. Then pieces can be put together. Don't make them give info all at once, then they definitely won't.
A2. I would use open communication with them and see if there was a way that we could work together. I would try to form a partnership. #EdTechChat#CCED334
A2) Sharing is Caring! A conversation needs to be had to see why they have it all and how they are intentionally planning for it. We don't want it to become a baby sitter where there is no intentionality behind it. #edtechchat
A2: I like to specifically name Edtech users to let others know who emulate. If we put "blobs" in leadership positions, they can model and shine! #edtechchat
A2) Is hogging the tech a bad thing...LOL? As we both have the same level of enthusiasm, I would approach them about collaborating together to get the leadership interested in purchasing more tech!
#edtechchat
Blobs like slugs tend to shrivel when you throw a little salt their way. Speak up, or write a grant and fortify your own shelter with tech #edtechchat (https://t.co/fT472oLZUL)
A2) I would just be open and honest and collaborate with that individual and ask for some of their favorite tech stuff and the content that can be taught. I think it is also important for people to share their ideas. People can learn from one another! #EdTechChat#CCED336
I am sorry I have a Windows Laptop Cart and a MacBook Air Cart ... no I am not... my kids use the crap out of those tools on a daily basis. just call me Dillio the Hutt #edtechchat
A2) Hmm... not an easy one. Access to edtech hardware is a problem with no easy answer. As for software and best practices, providing and even incentivizing resource sharing can be effective. Encourage the techno-philes to be revered thought-leaders in this space #edtechchat.
I am sorry I have a Windows Laptop Cart and a MacBook Air Cart ... no I am not... my kids use the crap out of those tools on a daily basis. just call me Dillio the Hutt #edtechchat
A2) I feel like this definition of โtechnology blobsโ is similar to the smart kids in any class. And I hate when somebody grasps on to a specific topic and doesnโt help me out! Try to instill โhelping othersโ into their role as a student! #edtechchat
I work hard to acquire the tech I have - fund raisers, grant writing - I'm not a coach so mine gets used routinely over the year, I teach 2/3 of the students at our school. #edTechChat
A2) Let them share a little bit from the very beginning, and encourage others to praise and learn from them, like using a promotion way to let them share more and more.
#edtechchat
A2... now Iโd never want my peers to be mad at me but I hope to use the tech deceives as much as possible in the future๐ฑ๐ป #sns#edtechchat#hoggingthedevices
A2: Blob free this school year...so far :-) I try to avoid this by centrally positioning tech in schools - for sign out or to be scheduled. We have someone who is responible for making sure its accounted for, but available to anyone. #edtechchat
I might be the technology blob. Iโm always open to sharing but i sure do have all the tech. Open invitation for others to come in anytime. #edtechchat#resourceful
A3: My favorite frankenstein activities are the ones where the students get to choose what parts to put together. Sit back and watch the monster come to life #edtechchat
... hopefully at set schedule. As in high school are librarians were kind enough to make a โshare chartโ for what was available to keep it fair and on track for teachers #edtechchat
Design 3D-printed video game controllers in @tinkercad, wire them up with @makeymakey kits, and use them to play video games coded in other platforms. #edtechchat
In reply to
@nathan_stevens, @tinkercad, @makeymakey
A2) Many find it difficult to tell quality edtech apart from tech for tech's sake. These "blobs" can be useful resources for establishing best practices or evaluation criteria. Have them partner with the aforementioned "zombies". #edtechchat
A2: That person would become someone I would spotlight for what they are using/ doing. When people feel appreciated for what they are doing they are more willing to share. #edtechchat
A1: A good way to engage with teachers who are wary of new tech is to show them how the tech would make their lives easier or complete a mundane task. Or how the tech can be effective substitution. You have to start somewhere! #edtechchat#TWS_F18
The biggest Blog I usually see sucking up all the tools is our data fetishism....the more a school needs digital experiences the greater the assessment blob attacks. #edtechchat (https://t.co/YjGpayChDG)
A3. Personally, I love technological activities that incorporate a smart board. It is really engaging and meaningful for the students to be able to physically touch the board to complete an activity or to further guide the teacher's instruction. #edtechchat
A3- Good ole power points projects. iPads for research. Computers for typing. Desktop and overhead tools for presenting. Combines everything! #edtechchat
A3 #edtechchat I think the best I have seen is a Nuclear Meltdown problem one of our HS science teachers uses each year. The tech is used for research, collaboration, presentations, etc.. So not a tool, but a project.
A2: Ask to collab, first. If that doesnโt work, come up with a really great lesson idea using their tech tools and ask to share tools & resources. Or, see if team teaching is an option so your students have access to the tools (even if you donโt). #EdTechChat
A3. I am not a teacher yet and I am not that familiar with tech that smashes everything together. I am looking forward to hearing your answers and getting some ideas. #EdTechChat#CCED334
A3) Having a great LMS is a great asset. @D2L and @moodle are two of my favorites. With great integrations and easy content authoring, they are great for facilitating #blendedlearning#edtechchat
A2: Form relationships that way they feel confident enough to share their ideas with their peers and just keep constantly sharing my own tech finds to help them feel more comfortable collaborating with others! #edtechchat
Flipgrid is great! My Elementary Methods professors have had us do many flipgrids! Even at the college level, it is a good tech resource! #EdTechChat#CCED336
In reply to
@lisaannrisch, @WeVideo, @Flipgrid, @Seesaw
A3 I like to use https://t.co/cm0xiuySmK as a presentation tool because it allows me to embed a Padlet as an iFrame. It's a dynamic way to include other people in your presentation without needing to have another screen. #edtechchat
A3) Being new to educational technology I hope to get many great answers from #edtechchat I want to broaden my horizon with all sorts of FUN tech ideas ๐ ๐ก
A3: That idea that @Dontworryteach shared recently was a good Frankenstein tech activity...I would share, but I donโt want to leave anything out... #EdTechChat
A4) I love to use Google Slides, Storyboardthat, and screencastomatic to have the kids create films to post to their Google Site for a variety of projects I assign!
Slides and screencasting has so many possibilities!
#edtechchat
A3) A4) I love to use Google Slides, Storyboardthat, and screencastomatic to have the kids create films to post to their Google Site for a variety of projects I assign!
ALL FREE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES!
Slides and screencasting has so many possibilities!
#edtechchat
A3) Agency over learning is a powerful beast. Ss are tech-natives and when given the opportunity to select their own means for demonstrating learning, you'll be screaming "IT'S ALIVE!!!" #edtechchat
For me the first step is getting a blog and reflecting on your learning. Model the type of learner you want your students to be. If you ever need help launching a site on any platform, or better yet your own domain just ask. #edtechchat (https://t.co/bbWQU5fhlj)
A3: Anything that engages the students, too. Many Ss get more value by being hands-on (multiple learning styles), not just watching the Ts be interactive. #edtechchat
A2 Our own FrakenAppSmashHits would be screencastify tours of Minecraft creations and book creators filled with student video (they love lego stop motion) and voice. #edtechchat
A3) As a student as well as a teacher, my favorite Frankenstein tech activities include 3D print stuff and VR-designed activities. Students can have much fun and learn new things faster.
#edtechchat
A4 Even though I've never taught, I would imagine students would be really excited with something they can create or even play games on. Only educational ones, of course! #edtechchat
Q3: My favorite technology activities in the classroom are smart boards! There are so many activities you can use with smart boards and it's a fun way to help keep the kids engaged. #edtechchat
A4- Giving kids choices makes them thirsty for learning. Some like video production, some like writing with @bookcreator, others simply like the tech of a pen and paper. #edtechchat
A3: We have started playing with Microbits and programming Arduino to move servo motors. The kids have created some pretty cool projects with those. #edtechchat
A4: Having the 3d printer running in the classroom is sparking lots of interest right now. They act like they want to learn but once I start them on the tutorials, they skim and jump to the gallery. ugh! #edtechchat
A4) I am not a teacher yet so I do not have a lot of experienceusimg tech in the classroom. However, one of the ones I have used in the classroom is @GetKahoot ! Another thing that I think would be very effective is the cardboard virtual reality goggles #CCED336#EdTechChat
A1: Show them examples of how awesome #edtech can be for student learning! Also re-emphasize that it's not about the tech; it's how you can use it to enhance learning! #edtechchat
A4. I am not a teacher yet so Iโm not sure which tech would be the best but I know that I like tech that is engaging and makes them information fun in creative ways. #EdTechChat#CCED334
Student Agency is soooo clutch! Tech has really provided an opportunity for us to provide that in ways that weren't available five years ago!
#edtechchat
A4: My Ss LOVE Quizlet Live, Quizizz, and any tech that creates competition. They are hormone-fueled 7th graders so the competitive aspect really motivates them. They are always asking โwhat do we get if we win?โ...I hope to change that in the future though #edtechchat#TWS_F18
A4 Minecraft. Currently kicking off a mill city project as we study the Industrial Revolution. Students also ask to create book presentations/tours using the platform. #edtechchat
A4. Games! Especially ones that involve technology to increase their tech side and their knowledge on the subject. Not to mention it makes them feel independent and responsible for their learning. #edtechchat
A2: ask them to demonstrate how the tech is being used in their classroom. I try to avoid being a technology blob by blogging ... hopefully, my blog can help others see how tech can be used intentionally in the classroom #edtechchat
I actually used a Kahoot for a 7th grade Halloween party I hosted for my son...lol! I was like...I'm so lame and they are going to hate this...they were like...what do you mean there are only 20 questions...lol! They LOVED it!
#edtechchat
A4 Minecraft. Currently kicking off a mill city project as we study the Industrial Revolution. Students also ask to create book presentations/tours using the platform. #edtechchat
A4) Anything that fosters Ss natural curiosity and allows them to explore new ideas on their own terms. Avoid the chocolate-covered broccoli....or in this case, the blood-covered garlic? #edtechchat
A4: Our students seem to be more interested in gamification and game building lately. We are about to test some integration of basic programming skills and storytelling with @BloxelsEDU to see if our students like it. #edtechchat
First, just play with it. No project. Maybe challenges. This challenge was to find a different way to use the green screen. See what the students did.
#edtechchat
Yes I have! The issue with Kahoot is that itโs timed.
Iโm secondary math, so we emphasize accuracy over speed when solving problems. Also really thinking deeply about our explainations and the methods we use to solve! Self-paced is best in my situation. #TWS_F18#edtechchat
A5 I still use youtube videos to introduce reading skills even though I have been doing it for years. Students are still really engaged by that even though it isn't the newest technology #edtechchat
A5: Donโt recycle those โobsolete devicesโ just yet. Create a space where students can take them apart, possibly harvesting parts for another project #edtechchat
A5) PREZI...lol! I use it when I'm screencasting lectures for my virtual course & blended learning opportunities. I know there are haters...but I am so much better at graphics now so I can really create a much better lecture that has a multi-sensory spatial vibe!
#edtechchat
A4) Technology games are loved by elementary students! Anything that allows them to compete with others while learning. If they are on the smart board, they seem to be excited to learn! #edtechchat
A5 #edtechchat I had a teacher resurrect the old smart clickers this year. I thought I had recycled them all two years ago, but she found a set I had missed.
Kahoot is great for practicing recall and drills of simple facts in math. But yes Kahoot is addicting ๐ I use to play with ASL class! #edtechchat#TWS_F18
#edtechchat A3: I tried using Google apps with students collaborating on docs, doing a presentation, but TBH they weren't very enthusiastic (this was in an alternative HS so they weren't enthusiastic about much)
A5 Stumbled back into Nearpod and was pleased with improvements. Never have lost track of @Socrative (student vote is awesome) @padlet and @diigo. #edtechchat
A5: Google slides isnโt exactly old but there are so many ways to use it beyond just presentations: stop motion, ebooks, creating apps and more!#edtechchat
A4: Kids love green screen activities, even us kids in college! iMovie is something they would go crazy about and it makes them collaborate with others. #edtechchat
As a math teacher for every level from middle school to doctoral students (not at the same time!) can I just second and double-down on the for accuracy not for speed? #edtechchat
In reply to
@ms_calabro, @MadisonValley4, @GetKahoot
A5. I started using google docs again. I used it a lot during high school but took a break from using it and recently have discovered how beneficial and useful it is. #EdTechChat#CCED334
You are about to enter The Matrix my friend...a whole new world of teaching and classroom/behavioral management is waiting you!
Google it...it's a total game changer!!!
#edtechchat
A5) Classic games are excellent case studies when teaching 21st-century skills like investigating STEAM opportunities and design-thinking. Not to mention the Pharoh of spatial reasoning - Tetris. #spatialreasoning#mathisvisual#edtechchat
A4: My students LOVE #breakoutedu activities. I create them using Google Sites, Google Maps, Google Drawings, Google Earth, etc... heck, I throw in Ottendorf ciphers sometimes for extra collaboration and fun! #edtechchat
Okay I actually have a non-fake answer to this one. I do a note-taking unit based on the computer game Riven which is older than my students ๐ #edtechchat
Social Media Tip: Changing Your Twitter @ name โ You can change your account user name without losing followers or messages. The name just changes. https://t.co/j1MgHUoNLx | via @TwitterSupport#edtechchat
The beauty of Quizlet Live is that if they go too quickly and make a mistake, they get the question incorrect and their score starts back over at zero ๐๐ MAKES them go slower ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ #TWS_F18#Edtechchat
In reply to
@annmariastat, @MadisonValley4, @GetKahoot
They have recreated battlefields when studying wars, when introducing colonization they create their own colony, made Roman coliseums and such. #edtechchat
A6) Google Calendar..."Why yes...that has been posted for over a month now..and no...you don't have a good excuse as to why you didn't complete it"
insert evil witch laugh now...lol!!!
#edtechchat
RSS is all the magic of the ancient web. Freaks my kids out that I have everything they write without touching the LMS #edtechchat (https://t.co/JPaBRyLwTH)
#edtechchat I don't think there's a particular kind of technology, but I think when students have to come to their teacher to figure out how to navigate technology, the teacher has finally won.
A6: Honestly, I wasn't Ss and Ts to feel like the magical ones! If I look like the witch with all the power, some are intimidated. #studentengagement#edtechchat
A6) Effective game-based learning is a great way to meet students engagement needs. #RealityisBroken by @avantgame (Jane McGonigal) is full of ideas on how to use gamefulness. QR codes are great for creating blended learning quests #edtechchat
A6. I think that smart boards are very impressive and all of the different ways you can incoperate those into the classroom so I believe that students would be impressed by that as well. #EdTechChat#CCED334
A6 #edtechchat Being more in the back of the classroom, than the front, it is the management tools of the network. The kids find it hard to believe all that I can find out about their computers/activity from my chromebook.
I paid for it. I don't have a district that values the use of technology for educational purposes. However, I have a husband that doesn't keep a watchful eye on our bills...lol!
#edtechchat
Aren't they great?! Coupled with a great digital resource and some class-participation, it's a powerful experience. We often see Zorbit's Math Adventure being played on the SMARTboard as part of a number talk and collaborative lesson. #edtechchat
A7) All things Google...especially for my special education students. I love finding ways to create the Least Restrictive Environment by using these free tools and extensions to help my most vulnerable students achieve learning independence!
#edtechchat
A7) chocolate-covered broccoli! (YUK) Too many digital resources gamify learning by putting game mechanics AROUND it which positions the content as a barrier to the fun bits of the game. Look for tech that puts learning at the core of the tech #edtechchat#growthmindset
