Hey Della - so cool to see you back at
Debby from NY, excited to be joining !
A1: I've played flute since I was nine and have been hooked ever since. I now get to teach middle school band every day!
Hi Della. Welcome back and so glad you choose tonight!
A1: As a Ss, I was in all the groups (band & chorus). As a Ps, I supported my kids as a member of PoPS (Ps of PerfArts Ss).
A1: I have always been involved in Drama and Dance at schools - I enjoy exploring culture through them
A1: I began my teaching as a instrumental music director. I am also a jazz musician and played 29 years in a symphony.
We are a Lead creative school in Wales. We are researching the impact of drama on literacy skills. https://t.co/41DHqYFYX1
A1 for 6yrs i've been a music, art and physical education T, ive been with the ARTS til now, i must say an advocate of it
Hello fellow flautist! Thats' one of my instruments as well...! Do you play outside of "work"?
A1 Lots of musical instruments as a kid; viola, guitar, piano, flute, clarinet..
A1 I took guitar lessons when I was in MS and was part of the chorus in HS musicals. Lip sync mostly.
A1- undergrad degree in music. Just a love of the other three.... Feel strongly abt their place in education but need more pd
I was involved in music mostly band. Took oil painting lessons and did a lot of cartooning.
A1: I took dance throughout school and participated in musicals all through high school.
A1) Tap & Jazz, Greek folk dancing (Opa!!) performed in school musicals, solos for choir, loved to draw, paint & create as kid
Not nearly as much as I'd like. Used to play in a community group but grad school & kiddo made it hard to keep up. U?
When you say love them, does that mean as a spectator or do you "try them out" as well?
A1) Attended a performing arts middle school-- felt like the show Fame. Best experience ever! Dance and musical theater.
A1: I'm a cellist. What started at 10 paid for some college & forever cemented my love for the arts.
A1: I plaved the violin for about 15 years when I was young, now I support the arts' programs where I teach
A1: I have never loved Music and Visual Art, probably because I am terrible at both, however I always have a go!!
Got it ✋ Chn' with MH issues, benefit hugely from access to skilled creative nurturing teaching DO/SAY/QUESTION/MAKE
I hate how the arts are always cut first when it's time to trim the budget!
A1 I was one of those unfortunate cases where when you are forced to do something, you no longer love it
Hi . Dropping in briefly on the way to work -teacher librarian from Perth, Western Australia
Wow! Thats a lot of musical skill!! What about the other Arts? Do you dabble in them?
So cool seeing so many with arts backgrounds here! Many creative minds in education!
A1: When I left the classroom (band room) I became a principal of a magnet school for technology and the performing arts.
danced as a kid; loved art of all sorts except for theater; too shy!
Hey Sarah... great you can drop in. Have a terrific day at school
SO great to see you here Sarah
It seems that a lot of music ed Ts make the transition to admin. Many parallels to running performing groups.
Agreed. Art was play to me and not a technical skill that I acquired.
I am a huge advocate of the growth mindset
Yeah! Tell me more about your school!
Cool Good point to mention the programs A1 https://t.co/nNoKcxrvwH
A1) Attended a performing arts middle school-- felt like the show Fame. Best experience ever! Dance and musical theater.
Amazing connections between technology and the arts. Creativity in both.
Seems a made a deal with mom...buy me the flute I wanted and I'd play forever. Flute lasted longer than joy
Grew up in a very musical family, which is where my love from music derived.
- we are talking about arts in education in tonight.
A1 I also love to dance, but not professionally. My favorite is salsa and Cuban music.
I wonder if you just needed a cognitive break. Hope you can find that joy again :)
RT https://t.co/N3wNOJxnEO Hi . Dropping in briefly on the way to work -teacher librarian from Perth, Western Australia
Hi . Dropping in briefly on the way to work -teacher librarian from Perth, Western Australia

Andrew kauffman stopping in, steam coach teacher love photography and design, do it as a hobby on the side
Q2 coming up in 1 minute ………..

A1: I did one year of ballet as a child, I was too clumsy for dancing!
Thanks for joining Andrew - always a pleasure
It was the quietest instrument as the reason my parents bought me the flute for the band.
Give me the librarian job at a & I'll never complain about work again! Lol! https://t.co/iODvqOLWga

I played in the pit orchestra for one year!
Teacher during school year Music drama director several years at daycamp/ " wrote and directed simple productions MUCH fun A1
A1: although I have never enjoyed many elements of The Arts as a student I always adopt a Growth Mindset which is so key
Ha! I picked flute because they got to sit in the front row. :)
Played violin and trombone, enjoyed the visual arts more than playing music, still greatly beneficial
one of the things about music is that it became therapeutic once you learned to play chords and melody
Such a great experience.Had the lead in Once Upon a Mattress my senior year Pit is a huge part of a performance
A2: I think that students need a break from all the constant core subjects and allowed the chance to be creative!
Hello everyone! Guess that's why they call tech "state of the art".
A2: So many students are artistically minded and it is a great avenue to let creativity shine
Me too! Slid across entire stage thanks to my tap shoes
You found your passion... thats the great thing
A2: Try reciting the ABCs without singing them. When we teach through music it cements the learning in.
Hey buddy! so good to see you here
A2) We have to engage both right and left brain thinkers. Creative expression can lead to innovation.
A2: It mattered to me b/c math became much easier reading musical notes divided into eighths, sixteenths, quarter, whole, etc.
Art is a lifeline for students.

My passion for The Arts...through my daughters...Arts school graduates...Arts school and Architecture pathways postsecondary.
I can empathize! I played the cello from middle school through college & w/Houston Youth Symph.
We have music, but no art. :( It's tragic.
A2: SomeSs need to recharge their creative side. Others need to explore their creative side. This is where the magic happens
What is a magnet school? The term is Greek to me. Thanks.
This is why I am a huge advocate for over . Fostering creativity and the Arts is critical in our schools.
proud Papa! What part of The Arts did they carry with them?
A2) it's fun, able to retain, understand , make connection to info better w/ movement, art, creation,
A1 I was in dance clubs from elementary through high school.

So glad the ed community added the A!
A2: 21st century learning skills are absolutely learned, realized and lived through The Arts! Huge student engagement!
A2 the arts teach children to take risks and problem solve
A2: Arts classes often give Ss a place to "fit" when they might not in other subjects or activities.
We could start an online orchestra with this crowd :)
A2: It is a way to unleash the creative students and to learn in ways that are different to the 'norm'
A2 Arts communicate through variable mediums. Arts express w connotations.
Encouraged my kids 2 try the arts. Now DD is a Theater DesignTech major in college and DS won an award 4 his performance.
Plethora of sources f/all skills being taught via music/song A2 and our music teacher's grade level shows taught diversity A2
A2: Some of our most 'disengaged' students actually engage enthusiastically because of The Arts.
A2: Students need self expression through the arts. It is imperative for our students to learn about their passions/strengths
love that, there is a role for all in the Arts
It was cut from the budget years ago.
A2: Ss need to realize art is almost anything, origami, cartoons, etc all help build amazing connections
Why does learning thru the arts matter? Then write after your answer, you got this my friend!
A2: Arts are centered on freedom-the perfect brain brk! Like , digital art expr. I wish I kept my cello in my office!
Pacing is always challenge, but I work hard to keep up pace & avoid much down time for others.
Ugh! Origami Yoda has taken over my house! Reading, art, and Star Wars all in one!
A2: the arts is not an extra in schools. It is the core of some of our humanity. It's how some of us express ourselves.
A2: Power of Pictures excellent resource for using art to guide the writing process
A2: The arts provide a great way for Ss to collaborate and expressive themselves in diverse ways.
https://t.co/bGQO6mV8B9
A2: the arts is not an extra in schools. It is the core of some of our humanity. It's how some of us express ourselves.
As a principal, how do you share that thinking with other non-Arts Admin?
Go team ! I know dorky! Lol!
A2: Through the arts, students are able to ignite their creative passions. The arts enhance learning

My youngest...drama, dance, vocal now at performing arts school...my oldest in architecture...visual arts.
I couldn't agree more. We need to embrace and rally for more arts in public education
looking for answer to this great ?
The arts have helped my kids be creative, express themselves, and be very well rounded.
Yes... and especially when you go through the cognitive struggle of learning and come out on the other side
A3: More often than I think people realize. I wish non-arts Ts would approach us to collaborate more often.
Were the arts a way for you to release your energy & express your ideas?
A3: 2B honest, at any age. I used music to teach my preschoolers procedures.
Della! Long time no see!! Will definitely check this out!
Amazing example of learning success...real passion!
Band is a team activity that you kind of have to expect you move with the slowest member.
After you help them unlock a student's mind through music or art or graphic design they want to know more.
A3: when can't they? If we are creative!
A3: easy answer, Arts can be integrated everywhere
you just can't underestimate the power of enquiry. Every day is a school day forever! Out the box talk.
Integration! Muscle memory.. so many great things in that. Isn't singing with little ones the best?
A3 All the time as away of demonstrating learning, passion, story.
A2: The arts encourage creativity which leads to creative problem-solving!
Technology, like learning and music, is an art in itself.
A3: ALWAYS! The ARTS can ALWAYS be integrated! Teachers must recognize the strengths & passions of ALL students
Sorry I have to leave Ss coming into class. Great chat. thanks
How so? Can you give me your favorite example?
In Wales expressive arts are an integral part of our new 3-16 curriculum that is being developed. https://t.co/moQV9Cm82W
Much more likely to remember things. Taught my kids their address and phone number this way too!
A3: We integrate Arts across as many subjects as possible to give creative students an avenue to demonstrate their learning
Anyone using Aps in classes and all classes? A2
and graphic design is a melding point between the two, as is video production.
A3: Anytime, all the time & every time! Art appeals to every facet of learner types! Just find various mediums & go for it!
A3 I had a great discussion with who integrates a lot of her art with social studies.
A3: As and when students desire.
A3: The arts filter into everything! Creativity, confidence, poise, and ability to express oneself!
Are we integrating the creative process, the Performing Arts or both?
A3 as early as possible, why not in kindergarten?? I don't see why not
A3: When given the chance Ss will often choose really creative ways of demonstrating learning. Need to give them the chance.
A3: Really try to get Ts and Ss to see how art is in storytelling, math, science, you name it, it's there, definitely a need!
A3: Arts are part of the fabric of meaningful learning in any subject discipline...singing, dancing, acting, drawing, etc.
A3: Socratic Seminar is a great opportunity to Incorporate the arts. I've used music, poetry, & art for Ss to analyze/discuss.
A3 Our art dept head integrates Mandarin learning into her art. U can see in her tweets.
A3: Look at this graphic from my website. What doesn't the arts encompass? What is important? https://t.co/WrK1NO7bw7
in Math designs using translations and reflections, in language amazing diorama of a scene in a novel
Hey all! Gabe from PA, 9th grade student, son of
Music for language, Play & Drama for social skills is powerful
A3: my daughter is 2 and loves Music, Visual Art and the aspect of play - she rocks! Any age is a good age for The Arts
A3 Reply? When can arts be reintegrated? Ss read, write, draw, sing, dance w/o boundaries.
Can't imagine industrialisation without learning thru doing. preferred learning styles V important. Arts
I agree... our little learners bring so much of their understanding about the world in to school through arts
A3 marching in lines to a beat on the way to the classroom is often started in kindergarten.
of course! You rock and so does
Really have shown Ss and Ts how you can using coding to make many diff styles of art, inspirational and eye opening!
A3) Any time, any where, anything and everything, the Arts are everywhere, include them in there!
so agree with that and that choice can help to deepen the learning as Ss engage with the task
A1) I am currently a trumpet player and have participated in Jazz, Marching, and Concert band.
True.. But not everyone should feel the pressure to use arts. Some are not that competent.
A3 Also our art teacher teaches visual thinking strategies which aligns nicely with
good advice and I think Ts should model this too
Absolutly. Do you see the adults in the school modeling this joy or skills?
Great to hear. You must be good at song writing :))
Who doesn't LOVE dance, painting, music, etc???? The ARTS rock!
A2 E. Jensen: inspire creativity & critical thinking & enhance improved social, emotional, physical, academic,& cultural outcomes
Jumping in, Love this! It depicts looking at the
It doesn't have to be T led though. Let Ss be creative and learn with them.
A2) Learning about the Arts is a way of unleashing your inner creativity and exploring subjects you've never seen before
..... but it shouldn't be about wht the T is good at, but rather about what is good for S
welcome to the chat Gabe. Remember to slide your 3rd valve slide out just a bit when you have 2nd valve down too.
Not really, just knew it would be an easy way 4 them 2 remember at a young age.
some people that aren't comfortable should be allowed training & professional development to improve
Q4 coming up in 1 minute ………..
This is great - helps to make learning real for learners https://t.co/netnXCP3MP
A3) Our district is working to integrate the arts into other areas of the curriculum through and .
Love this. Our art T uses printmaking as part of the reiterate process which aligns to coding.
Yes! I couldn't agree more!
is royalty free music to integrate in projects
Yes, my young Padawan learner https://t.co/peq8RBXbPj
A2) Learning about the Arts is a way of unleashing your inner creativity and exploring subjects you've never seen before
Thanks! It's one of the reasons why I love being a librarian! I can incorporate every facet of art/literature.
Not always but that kind of passion can be contagious...even if it's slow-moving! 😊
Join us @ 8pm CT/ 9pm ET for as we chat about how to use in ...
That's also something teaming can address. Maximize strengths!
yes, it should ALWAYS be about the students. Students need voice & choice!
Yes, but not being good at arts wouldn't make anyone a bad teacher. Use your strengths to teach..
we have wellbeing sessions for Ts at school and all of these feature highly as means for Ts to switch off
A4: It allows different avenues of thinking and encourages students to think outside the square in order to be successful
Great point. That thinking along with 6Cs and co-constructing would go a long way to support student learning
Seems a contradiction not 2- Maths & Science-related subjects explore the arts embedded in our everyday existence.
A4: Creativity is learning, we take content and then we make sense of it by relating it to ourselves and our world
thanks for sharing Jennifer
A4: CP is based on inspiration! The arts provide that & b/c of it, dedication & creation follow suit! https://t.co/OpPwiebKT7
A3) the Arts are integrated in every thing imaginable, Ts just have 2 make a point 2 integrate it
they are speaking our language on https://t.co/4LVFwkT53K
yes, it should ALWAYS be about the students. Students need voice & choice!
A4: the use of the creative process helps to make content easier to remember and understand for some Ss.
A4: Creative process is ultimate formative assessment by Ss and Ts. Constantly reevaluating, revising, improving toward goal.
A4: The creative process encourages innovation! Allows Ss to think outside the box and demonstrate learning in various ways.
A4: We want Ss who can problem solve, collaborate, and be creative -skills are in the perf. and visual arts and move to class.
A4: Learning through creative means makes learning fun & sticky
A3 the arts can be integrated into any subject area. Write about it, create story describing, tie 2 math/science concepts
A4: Truly understanding the creative process helps me to make links to any curriculum area... https://t.co/DmTJIpoX0P
A4 It enhances cognitive connections between subjects. ie Renaissance history understanding deepened by learning the art
adding on... that the process is where we can assess the learning- important as Ts. Not just product but process too
I don't think that there are any "bad" teachers. I just think that Ts need to meet the needs of their students.
A4: In a time when we're constantly discussing 21st Cent Skills, arts provide pathways to reach those w/ all Ss.
A4 Creative process like arts allows variety within form, novelty within the predictable.
Yes indeed! https://t.co/6hvMHywPMC
A4: The creative process encourages innovation! Allows Ss to think outside the box and demonstrate learning in various ways.
A4) Creative processes can let the Ts and Ss think of how they remember certain details & can help Ss think outside the box
--- get's it!! https://t.co/aKq63qesqo
A3) the Arts are integrated in every thing imaginable, Ts just have 2 make a point 2 integrate it
A4: Enjoy using the arts as genres to teach rhetoric. Every artistic creation is an argument, with a purpose for an audience.
in circle its amazing as Ss take a response and add, or use "creativity" to link it to their own thoughts
Using the arts to play on strengths and mitigate weakness
True.. Cross neural connections is added bonus besides it being fun
I am a bit late, sorry ;)
A4 the creative process unlocks the magic ... Like giving kids permission to really live
As an instructional leader, it is my job to coach, train, support, & encourage teachers who struggle
agreed where creativity may lack in some disciplines the arts allow this area to flourish.
Welcome! We're talking about the Creative process...
'Outside the box' thinking/doing inspires that creativity and innovation...risking-taking can lead to great things!
A4 Encourages an "I can" mindset. Reinvigorates excitement for a topic/subject and gives ownership back to Ss.
We always have to remember importance of arts for sake of art. Cannot only let it become a way to reinforce other subjects.
A4: Giving students the ability to create, also gives them a voice. It opens up the ability to express thinking.
Q5 coming up in 1 minute ………..
Indeed! https://t.co/HnETgu2JJP
'Outside the box' thinking/doing inspires that creativity and innovation...risking-taking can lead to great things!
Thanks for a great chat everyone! Family calls. See you next time.
I find the more creative a kid is the easier it is to understand 21st century skill ... The arts is the key
sorry to be Tardy, Matt, K-5 Art
A4: Creative process connected to deep learning. When Ss become creators rather than consumers of content, they invest.
I agree. But for our friends who don't get that... tell me more
Great point! The Arts can most certainly stand alone!
Teaching is too important and impactful to just be an OK teacher. Kids deserve better. https://t.co/fTAct8Napm
As an instructional leader, it is my job to coach, train, support, & encourage teachers who struggle
And giving Ts permission too! To be creative in their teaching and think outside the box. https://t.co/JHNku4hHTx
A4 the creative process unlocks the magic ... Like giving kids permission to really live
I find it strange that we have to teach kids to be creative after we take the arts away from them bcuz of testing
Currently some of our Ts r incorporating which is like an art in itself.
Three chats in a week, all tackling creativity in schools - a delightful coincidence & PD opp?
Do you think it has some influence on zone of development?
A5: We constantly encourage innovation as a mindset - students love to solve problems and be problem solvers
A5: This mindset helps our students to become entrepreneurs and become citizens of the future. https://t.co/3lzq24vVqr
huge advocate for the arts as it unlocks that inquisitive side ... The what if.
A5: Sure thing, artist as inquisitor analogous to Ss who pursue questions/problems they deem important, interesting.
A2: it matters bc, Ss don't do the same way. It helps Give Ss a voice & shows them their voice matters!
Fascinated with that right now! Maybe bcs I'm a creative thinker:)
Beyond strange. It's devastatingly sad. Joy of creating/exploring is discouraged in search of "right" answer.
A5: answer that Q by reversing the sentences. It is because the arts teaches problem solving, resilience, and collaboration.
A5: As a problem solver and innovator the student artist can change the world (big or small)...making is a better place.
This is so important. Totally agree.
To build on that what if we had no subject names but went with project names for S courses.
IMO it blurs the zones so that students can expand their learning beyond what's expected. https://t.co/OBmMcTQx6L
Do you think it has some influence on zone of development?
Yes. Art also allows students another (safer?) way to communicate as well.
is now trending in USA, ranking 42
A2) The Arts foster an environment of creativity and risk-taking. Invaluable skills in a dynamic job market.
A3) can be integrated at any moment of a life!
The creative process can be integrated into both ways of thinking-the process, not just the content
It is so interesting! I understand why you are fascinated.
A5: It encourages students to think in different ways & come at problems with a variety of mindsets in order to be successful
Fully integrated projects built around the big ideas in curriculum! Love it! I'll join your school!
A3: Anytime & all the time! It is not something that is forced into the curriculum, it just flows right into it.
A4) Art/creation gives all Ss expression & every modality of understanding a chance to shine. https://t.co/CLuphANY3t
A5: It takes things from black/white and allows them to be colorful and interpreted in many ways by Ss.
anyone have to assess using CRT for sts must illustrate responses? A4-5
Creative minds are always seeking a diff way to achieve goal, don't have to be taught to do so.
then we wonder where the innovation has gone ... Can't be innovative without creativity ...
Authenticity! Not always fun or easy, the process allows opportunities for innovation
and don't forget dealing with mistakes. You haven't lived until you make a mistake in front of 20,000 ppl & you are amplified.
A5 Ss learning 2 be problem solvers and thinkers helps prepare 2 find answers 2 most questions/problems life throws their way
A5) Innovators constantly change up how they are approaching the problem, and Ss can look & think "I can do it this way."
A5: As a problem solver and innovator the student artist can change the world (big or small)...enriching it.
A5: It is what we are looking for..innovation and problem solving. We can add collaboration to it as well.
A3 The Arts can be integrated in all strands of curriculum. My favourite: students creating historical raps instead of papers.
Very true. The arts can be incorporated as much as allowed or wanted. I think it enhances learning
A5: realize strengths they don't even know they have!
Absolutely. allows for a Pro-Pro discussion to work with opposing ideas.
I know, right? I equate it to the surge of ! It's ironic rebranding. Leave our arts alone! https://t.co/ZhuyVB0uC9
I find it strange that we have to teach kids to be creative after we take the arts away from them bcuz of testing
A5) There is no right or wrong way/answer, Ss can take risks & feel more comfortable doing so
Q6 coming up in 1 minute ………..
Thanks for explaining. Funny the choice of the word "magnet' for this kind of school.
A5: You cannot develop an artistic skill without making constant mistakes and reworking. Important to develop that comfort.
Perhaps the arts are the most effective avenue for Ss to experience authentic problems or issues. Produce lifelong learners.
A4) By using on WHATEVER task people live it, so THEY act, and THAT'S remembered!
Q6) Share any tech tips or tools that enhance learning throughs The Arts in your school programs https://t.co/zGaHzswrOl
So loved this chat tonight! It's so inspiring to spend time with such passionate Arts supporters! Gotta run! Thanks
We were in the inner-city and wanted to be a magnet to attract all demographics into the area. It worked too
High order skills to teach creativity.. many in psych care are creatives. We need arts to be respected.
