    A2. I think it would be helpful to have bilingual community liaisons that the school could work closely with to address issues or help with the initial transition to American schooling. It would build a connection & give insight into specific cultures when needed. #ELLCHAT

    Newsella and other ELL-friendly publishers simplify language for ELLs to provide access to content instead of providing access to disciplinary language in grade-level texts. I use genre pedagogy (eg., Derewianka) Lmk if you want to learn more. #ellchat

    Counseling services in languages beyond English & Spanish has been an unmet need in my area. Often wish we had better access to Chinese speaking counselors especially! #ELLChat

    A2: We have Settlement Workers(SWIS) on site at our Welcome Centre to ā€œwrap aroundā€ our immigrant and refugee families. Each family is pared with a case manger who provides interpretation, community information and is the liason between home and school. #ellchat

    I was community liaison for Spanish speaking families at our school. I brought in local key contacts to inform them on health, safety, financial & educational issues. It takes coord effort to bring the information to these families who often wouldnā€™t have access to it #ELLCHAT

    So true! But I have to say that our multicultural potlucks once a month are making connections so that our families feel comfortable coming to us for services. It's important to make friends. But you're right, it needs to be more. #ellchat

    A4) Iā€™ve seen schools that have posted ā€œschool tourā€ videos in multiple languages on their homepages- different scenarios (early dismissal, late arrival, cafeteria routine, etc) . #ellchat

    A5: In our newcomer program, we are doing a parent as educational partners piece where we are trying to get community partners to come in to work wiht our families. Our local Lakeshore store taught families about stem. This month we are working with an area doctor. #ellchat

    We give our own parent English classes. @AAFS_IL a local agency does English classes, citizenship classes, and advocacy for families in our community. #ellchat
