Silent Day Video 1:
The bell rings and I'm forced to be silent until 3:35! My kiddos think it's pretty hilarious that I can't talk any more! Thanks to our daily rituals & routines, they know how to direct each other and listen to each others' directions!

Hello. My name is Susan, and I am a soon to be 1st year teacher from IL. I will be the founder of #newteachertribe which will be a chat geared towards new teachers. #learnlap
Paul! So glad you're here! I totally saved pictures from your silent day posts! Can't wait to try it one day! Thanks for being here to share with us. #LearnLAP
#SilentDay 2018 Final Update:
Being silent from 9:05-3:35 wasn't easy. Keeping my nose out of my students' business from 9:05-3:35 wasn't easy. Not having things go EXACTLY my way from 9:05-3:35 wasn't easy. But my kiddos ARE LEADERS and they've earned my trust! :)

A1: I have recently started doing the "Ask 3 before me" strategy. I have found that students have been able to help each other and grow together in the process. #learnlap
A1: I used @nearpod frequently to foster student collaboration, and I had Ss work in groups on math problems. This way, the Ss were able to work together and discuss what they did. #learnlap
#learnlap A1: Collaboration happens when Ss enter the classroom and sit with their "team." They start on their own and go over hmwk Qs together. ONLY Qs that they ask about, and only Ss answering. Multiple voices, all Ss, relevant Qs. I supervise quality + kindness of responses.
A1 Setting the expectation that Ss share their reading with peers through peer conferences and presentations. Guided conversation prompts for conferences and choice of platforms/tools for book talks. #LearnLAP#MeLit
I wanted to figure out Google Slides to use this year, but didn't get around to it. I have in on my list to figure out this summer so I can introduce the use in the fall. I have read good things about using that. #learnlap

A1: I was working with a group of 5th grade reluctant readers & we were analyzing NF organizational patterns. I knew they enjoyed games, so I found an article about marbles. I told them that if they collaborated well, we would actually play the game. It was AMAZING! #LearnLAP
A1: With my kindergarten and first grade students, I used buddy talks at different times during the day, and I had students work in pairs or triads during stations so they could collaborate.
#LearnLAP
It is a great platform for Ss to use to spark discussion, take notes, share thinking, and make learning public. We used slides to capture progress during our Genius Hour adventures. #LearnLAP

A1. #LearnLAP I offered challenges and the children worked in groups to solve them. Having a challenge motivated them to collaborate so they could succeed.
I'll be teaching SPED K-5 next year. So I need to step things up and see what I can do to help support classroom teachers and their learning also. I will be contacting you when I get stuck. Thanks. #learnlap

A1: I implemented literature circles for the first time this year. My students could not wait for Thursday! We did literature circles on Thursday and Friday. It replaced two of our Daily 5 rotations. #learnlap
A1. Giving Ss time to reflect upon what they read and share with their peers their ideas and how they can relate to the topic of discussion or poblem solving issue. #learnlap
Q2: #LearnLAP Let's talk about the classroom setup that is needed to create student reader leaders. Does your classroom allow for independence and collaboration? Share with us!
Is there a way for student voice for speech to text? I have a couple of kiddos who really struggle with typing and spelling and speech to text really supports them to more independent. #learnlap

A2: I believe all teachers are teachers of reading, but as a middle school math teacher, I know that incorporating student voice is important along with student choice. Ss oftentimes are able to make smart decisions in regards to who they would work well with. #learnlap
A1 speed dating! Move desks into concentric circles to discuss, and rotate every 2 minutes until you've talked with about half the class. Odd number of students means I'm in the rotation!
A2 - My students loved sitting (bouncing?) on yoga balls this year. The balls truly helped my kiddos concentrate, persist for long periods of time, and helped them get the jitters out! They also loved our comfy office chairs and being able to sit anywhere in the room! #LearnLAP
Oh my goodness. Tonight I got two new Twitter followers from #LearnLAP and now I am only 1 follower away from 2000! (Not sure why that matters to me. I will tell my teen!)
#learnlap A2: Ss have trapezoid tables that fit together in hexagons. 4-6 at a table. As soon as they sit down, they are face to face. Also, my desk is NOWHERE NEAR the dry erase board. Ss need uninhibited access to the "sand box." It's THEIR room, not mine.
Q2: #LearnLAP Let's talk about the classroom setup that is needed to create student reader leaders. Does your classroom allow for independence and collaboration? Share with us!
A2 My students love to find little spaces around the school to work. They are great independent learners and I am working on letting go to allow more of this especially for those students that are more than capable. #learnlap

A2 i think for us it was allowing noise in the classroom. Ts were so use to rows and silence throughout the whole class period. Where it was mostly teacher driven and independent work. Reminding ts the noise is okay helped move it to student centered. #learnlap
A2 Sometimes the cards just fall into place and the kids take the lead. These 1sts were just ready on this day. Leaders for sure

A2: In @KidsDeserveIt by @TechNinjaTodd, he mentioned book proms, and I was intriqued by it due to it giving Ss a taste of many different books. #learnlap
A2 I have several tables around the room were Ss can work. I also have clipboards available if the choose to sit on the floor or in the hallway. Our desks are in pods/teams. Yet, I give Ss freedom when I can to make a choice that is right for them #LearnLAP
A2 Adding a couch and a coffee table creating a reading corner that faces away from the classroom. This corner is near the classroom collection of books and invites reading and discussion. #LearnLAP
A2 #LearnLAP We got rid of boundaries and said all sharing of ideas was allowed. It was stressed that copying was not bad as long it it was used for building upon.
A2: As a reading specialist, when I go into classrooms, I have to work with the classroom setups that have been already established. However, my kids know that we use anchor charts and do jigsaw activities which encourage collaboration and discussion for all involved. #LearnLAP

Q3: #LearnLAP We want to give students opportunities to take risks in our classroom. What was one of your most successful risk-taking adventures this year?
I have a very small space so I got rid of my large table for a smaller round one that sits less than a foot off the floor and pillows. I did this the last 2 weeks and my Ss LOVED it. I'm interested to see how well it goes with summer school, the real test. #LearnLAP
A3 allowing student choice in how they respond and show their knowledge. Don’t have 30 of the same projects it’s okay for work to look different. #learnlap
I did a small book prom this year with my students to try it out. It was FABULOUS! You should totally look into doing it - any scale is great. #LearnLAP

A3: I took a risk when I did an escape room with my Ss. I was inspired by @RaeHughart and @hopekingteach. I turned off the lights and tried my best to set the scene. My Ss bought in, and I learned a lot from it. Although I have room to improve, I took a step forward. #learnlap
#learnlap A3: Letting Ss take roles of "author, editor, or publisher." (Or "industrial thief!") They take a role, work on the board in separate groups as they try new problems and pick up the "lesson" of the day in math.

A3 Creating an atmosphere of respect and "we are all in this together." We practice letting everyone take their turn to share so the more boisterous students do not bowl over the quieter ones. #learnlap
Q3: #LearnLAP We want to give students opportunities to take risks in our classroom. What was one of your most successful risk-taking adventures this year?
A3 Creating an environment where students have choice but within a comfortable framework/scaffold. I ask my Ss to read a certain number of books by the end of the yr, one from each genre. Within that framework they have choice. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A3: Letting Ss take roles of "author, editor, or publisher." (Or "industrial thief!") They take a role, work on the board in separate groups as they try new problems and pick up the "lesson" of the day in math.
A3: One year, after reading Stella Luna, I asked my students to make a bat or a bird out of paper. To do this, they had to tear the paper with their hands and figure out how make the bat/bird hang upside down. Their doubts turned to amazement when they figured it out.
#LearnLAP
A3 We all do projects together, me included. It is good for them to see me struggle, make mistakes and try to solve problems right along with them. #learnlap
A3 We just had our Olympic events and I think this oath works here as well #learnlap It’s in the trying, the challenge and how you handle the triumph. It’s the class culture where kids know they’re safe to try.
Q4 of #LearnLAP is next. Reader leaders maximize their learning by presenting and creating. How do you create opportunities for this in your class/school?
A3. Allowing Ss to use their voice and choice and creativity in projects and activities, by doing different things, you encourage risk taking! Let them know you believe in them, it's ok to fail, first attempt in learning, and so on. #learnlap
A3 I model my rdg throughout the yr. At Open House, before the yr starts, I have a slide show of the books I read over the summer. During the yr I lead book talks to model expectations. I also share the books that were "reaches" or not a perfect fit for me at first. #LearnLAP
A3: You have to give Ss time. Not everyone is comfortable taking risks, however, given time and proactice than most are willing to step out and try anything. #LearnLAP
A3: (jumping aboard)..This year I implemented #GuidedMath with #PBLs to supplement enrichment activities. I also took my teaching "hooks" to a new level. Lastly, Everyday I tried to compliment at least four staff members, and provide feedback to ALL of my students. #learnlap
A4: Probably our Turn of the Century Shark Tank. Students took an invention from the turn of the 20th century and had to make a pitch to a room of sharks about why it was such an impactful invention. Can't wait to do it again next year!! #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal@PHausTech

A3 Writing in the voice of a character, staging scenes, prepping and then staging mock trials, debates - all present ways for students to put to use what they're learning in an engaging & active way. #learnlap
A4 - My students LOVED creating things in Passion Time and during Imagination Club activities like Global Day of Design & Cardboard Challenge! They also enjoyed presenting to adults & students about our unique classroom at our Second Annual #TLIM Leadership Day Fair!
#LearnLAP
A3: 5th Ss & we needed to analyze AP to include a variety of NF text features in order to help readers preview & make better sense of text. We also had to determine which ?’s could be answered in each text & locate evidence. Ss determined the best way to set this up. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A4: Ss asked to make videos in math. So their final exam entry ticket was to make a video lesson of something in the year that could be added to our class Haiku page.
Q4 of #LearnLAP is next. Reader leaders maximize their learning by presenting and creating. How do you create opportunities for this in your class/school?
We're talking about this in
#LearnLAP...
TOPIC: "Flexible seating and its impact on self regulation & academics"
Please join @theresaklambert TUESDAY (Tomorrow) at 7pm Central for #5thchat! All grades welcome!
A4 by allowing choice in how they show what they know. It should look different for each student by what they choose to use to show off their knowledge. #learnlap
A4: Love having students create sketch notes, use their imagination and tie the content to topics that are relevant to them. I give students an opportunity to create in which ever way they prefer (sketch, slides, infographic, etc.) #learnlap
Q4 of #LearnLAP is next. Reader leaders maximize their learning by presenting and creating. How do you create opportunities for this in your class/school?
A4 Give them multiple opportunities of show what they are learning while they are learning it, not just the finished products. I think this also helps them all step out & take risks too. Encourage to share their thinking. It’s all about the process, isn’t it? #LearnLAP

Good grief, sorry for using the wrong hashtag for my first 2 A's!
We start the year reading The Book of Mistakes, we all write down something negative we've said when we've made a mistake on a Sticky note& have a funeral for them. Lesson- we all make them&it's ok.
A4: Probably our Turn of the Century Shark Tank. Students took an invention from the turn of the 20th century and had to make a pitch to a room of sharks about why it was such an impactful invention. Can't wait to do it again next year!! #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal@PHausTech
A4: I gave my preschooler voice and choice by letting them choose the songs for the End-of-the-Year Celebration. The top three vote-getters are the ones that we did for their families. #LearnLAP
A4 Genius hour was at the top of our list. We just finished a Creativity Project based on the book edited by @colbysharp The students are having fun listening to what was written using the prompts they came up with.#learnlap
A4: I started using @Flipgrid with a group of 3rd graders. They loved being able to share what they learned. It was interesting to listen to them after they listened to anothers video & some points where missed. They learned how to share appropriatly. #learnlap
A4: I used @flipgrid this past year, but I want to use @buncee more. I am planning on using @thegridmethod for one unit this upcoming year along with the #teachfurther model, so I am taking it one step at a time. #learnlap
A4: I try to give ALL students 5-10 minutes to teach a "mini lesson" that they created. In addition to this, I have different events to end a unit to promote collaboration & student voice. #learnlap
A4. Designing and planning out their volcano project. They made posters to represent what they learned about before creating a 3D representation of the phenonmena! #learnlap
A4 Every student is expected to lead two books talks based on their independent reading. They choose the visual to support the talk. Some choose digital, others analog. This yr many have selected #MinecraftEDU to share a setting and narrate via screencast. #LearnLAP#StuVoice
Q5 of #LearnLAP is up. Let's chat about student growth. Reader leaders always have a goal (or two) and are working hard to reach it through tracking their progress. How do support this in your class or school?
A3. Creating a FAMILY culture the 1st day of school! We respect each other, cheer each other on and take risks together-
We succeed and fail enthusiastically together as a family!
A4: We encourage “star readers” where students who have gained more confidence in reading are the guest readers in different classrooms and for Ts during collaborative planning. It means so much to our Ss and really gives their self esteem a boost of confidence. #LearnLAP
A4: #LearnLap - choice boards; Flipgrid, Seesaw blog, Google Slide shows, songs, raps, poems, reading to the class with our microphone; when they were Surgeons, Chefs and Construction workers and had to share in teams.
A4: In one of my college classes, a professor had us read a passage and highlight. Then, she made us read it again but this time with a purpose so that we knew what we had to highlight. The activity taught me the importance of reading with a purpose and being selective #learnlap
A4 So often when I sub and it’s #Geniushour in the class schedule I don’t know who’s more excited, the kids or me! #learnLap I often blog about it. Kids are amazing with choice/action
A2 classroom setup is often out of my control but I do use flexible grouping and activities that require teams/partners to move around the room 5 gr has to read experiment scenarios and teach others how to fix the scenarios to be fair investigations #sciencepalooza#LearnLAP
A5: This is an area I would like to grow in. Thinking next year I will have students select one assignment from each unit that shows their mastery and place it into a folder for a portfolio that we can reflect on throughout the year. #learnlap
A5 I sit with each S after each book is read. We talk about the book and what they enjoyed. We use these moments to set goals. I also use a more formal reflection sheet twice a year. Looping with my students helps continue the growth over an extended period of time. #LearnLAP
A5: I tell my students that all I expect from them is their best. I go on to explain that everyone has different things they are good at, so one person's best may not look like another person's. We talk a lot about "The Power of Yet." https://t.co/ajXLbEeqjh#LearnLAP
A5: my students create #SMART Goals bi-weekly. We progress monitor our goals every other Friday. Students hold each other accountable through their work w/their goals! #learnlap
Q5- we have set goals and tracked individual reading stamina. We have tracked if we have moved from surface conversations about our reading( snorkel conversations) to deep conversations( scuba conversations)#LearnLAP
A5 - I created SMAARTER Goals (a revision of SMART Goals) for my kiddos. We work on goals every week, making a plan, citing evidence towards our goal & making new goals.
Feel free to use them yourself: https://t.co/bfVQnOvd8m#LearnLAP
A4: On Fridays, my K Ss worked in small groups to create presentations (story retell, info presentation, etc) based upon our readings from that week. When they finished preparing, each group presented their presentation to the other students who were the audience.
#LearnLAP
A5: My CT had the Ss write their goals on a post it note and place them on the bottom of our classroom door. When they obtained their goal, they were able to move their post it note so that it went above the door handle. It was powerful. #learnlap
#learnlap A5: "Mathacognition." Ss have google-docs (shared w/me) on which they respond to prompts about their emotional relationship w/math and the class. Once we establish a baseline, next is goals and methods of accomplishing them. Ongoing dialogue all year long.
Q5 of #LearnLAP is up. Let's chat about student growth. Reader leaders always have a goal (or two) and are working hard to reach it through tracking their progress. How do support this in your class or school?
A5: My students have their own data folders. We discuss their goals during individual conferences. We celebrate when a student reaches a goal! #learnlap
A5. Saving a folder with samples of Ss work to share and discuss with parents and Ss. Have Ss use a form where they can set a few goals for themselves, and the teacher sets goals , too. Then, we meet, to see how things are going! #learnlap
A5: Mirrored assessments (pre & post) for reading units could provide a formal monitoring growth in students' literacy skills and their depth of analyses. Students appreciate their teacher's feedback as a way to monitor their literacy growths as well. #LearnLAP
Q5 of #LearnLAP is up. Let's chat about student growth. Reader leaders always have a goal (or two) and are working hard to reach it through tracking their progress. How do support this in your class or school?
A5: #LearnLAP - Like Phil, I want to work on this more to perfect a system. We talk after guided reading about next steps/goals; S's record themselves reading on Seesaw and leave themselves a compliment and something to work on.
Q6 of #LearnLAP - Get your Amazon wishlist ready! Reader leaders develop their social-emotional skills with engaging literature. What are some titles you use with your students to build empathy skills?
#learnlap A5: "Mathacognition." Ss have google-docs (shared w/me) on which they respond to prompts about their emotional relationship w/math and the class. Once we establish a baseline, next is goals and methods of accomplishing them. Ongoing dialogue all year long.
Q5 of #LearnLAP is up. Let's chat about student growth. Reader leaders always have a goal (or two) and are working hard to reach it through tracking their progress. How do support this in your class or school?
A6: My favorite to use with my students is "Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot" when I teach about the Berlin Blockade. Brings chills to my spine and tears to my eyes. It is a powerful story that always leaves the class smiling. #learnlap@HistoryislifeDC@burgessdave
A6 August Pullman was our hero this year. My students always love the book and this year the movie just added to the magic. Opens up many long lasting lessons and discussions about empathy. #learnlap
My favorite thing to use is the procreate app! It’s a lot to get used to but after you get the hang of it, it gets easier. I love @wterral- she’s who I learned from! #learnlap
#learnlap A6: Not a title, but my dept chair has a policy of "no 'comma dumb-ass'" It means you shouldn't say anything in a manner that sounds like there is a silent ",dumb-ass" after it. Gets HSers to think about their tone when helping others and answering Qs in class.
Q6 of #LearnLAP - Get your Amazon wishlist ready! Reader leaders develop their social-emotional skills with engaging literature. What are some titles you use with your students to build empathy skills?
A5: conferencing with Ss & not only discuss academics but also what goals Ss have & more importantly, how will they work towards that goal? How will they know when they’ve accomplished it? We have to be careful with data because our Ss are more than numbers. #LearnLAP
I love reading this book to classes, too. I’ve always thought I would have the 5th graders design candy parachutes to drop down the stairwell. #LearnLAP

A6 For a number of years Auggie from Wonder has been a well known character. The movie has helped extend the character's reach. Ss empathize with his struggles and we use the story to discuss how to create a supportive & safe learning env. #LearnLAP
A4: My students have always enjoyed creating their own Animoto book trailers as book reviews. Students can share their book trailers just like a movie trailer to promote their books in such a fun, digitalized format. #LearnLAP
Q4 of #LearnLAP is next. Reader leaders maximize their learning by presenting and creating. How do you create opportunities for this in your class/school?
A6: #LearnLAP - Such a tough question because there are so many but Auggie from Wonder! Other books I always read to discuss empathy(for the characters and for those who might have experienced the same feelings)include: Thank you Mr. Faulkner,When we Were Alone, Don't Laugh at Me
A4. Here’s some pics of rubric which included qr code of their @Flipgrid where they reflected on their @geniushour presentation and also pics of them presenting;) #LearnLAP
Q7 of #LearnLAP Student reader leaders are responsible and have opportunities to use their leadership skills. How do you facilitate or create these experiences in your classroom or school?
A6 Save Me A Seat was a big hit this year. Ravi and Joe are two great characters that sparked rich discussion during our read aloud time. Read it? Try Flying The Dragon. #LearnLAP#elemchat
A7: When students say, "Can I have all the work I missed?" I've stopped looking it up for them and have them go back and check their PowerSchool. Helps them take responsibility and helps them keep better track of what is owed. #learnlap
A6 Each Kindness by J. Woodson, The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig Last Stop On Market Street by Matt De La Pena just to name a few. SEL with books my favorite #learnlap
#LearnLAP A4 Using @RealComichead & smashing it into @Seesaw was a true blast for my readers to produce authentic products. Storyboarding and conferring first is a must to create the best experience possible!
A6: a few years back a group of my 6th graders loved Flying Solo. They related with the characters and noticed how they were like the charaters. They experienced empathy as well. It was a great learning expereince for all of us. #learnlap
A7 #LearnLAP Our makerspace activities lend themselves to leadership opportunities. The leaders change, too, because the activities highlight and build different skills.
A7: So often the Ss I get are used to having the Ps do everything ffor them. We teach them to be more independent. If you got it out, you put it away. If you spilled it, you clean it up. #LearnLAP
A7 I was able to step back and allow them to make decisions and have more choice than I ever have before. We all loved it. They just celebrated with our version of a "Solo Day." #rockedit#learnlap
A5: My kids created goals for the beg. of the year on @Flipgrid -
They wete on shirts and we showcased them in hall for others to hear;) we also reflected and set new goals throughout year;) #LearnLAP
A7 A year long independent rdg project. Ss manage on their own and work with me to schedule conferences, book talks, etc. Time management, self advocacy, record keeping, and learning to learn are all skills developed along with rdg. #LearnLAP
A7: Let the Ss have a chance to show what they know! Some students ‘test out’ of units. I let them share their knowledge with the class during our reteach. Sometimes, struggling Ss are more able to learn from another voice! Clean the slate and utilize the small groups. #learnlap
A7: I was just reading #disciplinewithdignity, and it emphasized getting the Ss to think about better choices while getting them to reflect on their own actions. #learnlap
You're right, we have to be conscious that we're moving them towards independence in SO many different ways, especially in the younger grades. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A7: Back to earlier answer about collaborating when going over homework problems. Leaders both ask Qs and answer Qs. Ss find leadership in both. It's all THEIR discussion. If they don't take responsibility to ask or answer, it goes unaddressed. They gotta own it!
Q7 of #LearnLAP Student reader leaders are responsible and have opportunities to use their leadership skills. How do you facilitate or create these experiences in your classroom or school?
A5: My kids created goals for the beg. of the year on @Flipgrid -
They wete on shirts and we showcased them in hall for others to hear;) we also reflected and set new goals throughout year;) #LearnLAP
It is working on projects based on their passions. It is a great opportunity to fit in all kinds of digital citizenship, planning, researching, presenting while they choose their own path. #Loveit#LearnLAP
A7 My Ss establish norms for their new book clubs every time we begin a new cycle, approx every 5-6 weeks. When doing projects, they establish their timeline - T then approves. #LearnLAP
We read Save me a Seat for Battle of the books and my 5th graders loved it! Then, my 4th graders wanted to read it because they heard me always raving about it! #LearnLAP
Q8 of #LearnLAP Let's talk tech! There are so many great resources at our disposal to give students creative freedom. Which one(s) do you prefer to use with student leaders?
A8 anything google!! Students created google sites, slides, podcast, game shows, @WeVideo, @PowToons, @Screencastify, stop motion videos, and so many other edtech tools. #learnlap
A8: Can I just get a hallelujah for our usage of laptops and Chromebooks! What a change it's been this year so we're not all crammed around a desktop! I hope districts will continue in this direction 🤓 #LearnLAP
A7. Ss will ask what they missed, if activities can be redone and made up! If multiple things, they have options to choose from. Getting Ss to demonstrate knowledge of subject or idea, challenging them to show me how you know something or can do something! #learnlap
