Digital or Paper Portfolios?
I've been using paper and am trying to switch to digital just to try something new. Using it with #geniushour projects in EarthSpace Class. #Freshman Quality is lacking in their reflections and records. suggestions? #HackLearning#TLAP#sunchat
Good morning, Tiff! Susan checking in from the Jersey Shore - looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts on how we can ramp up today's curriculum! #sunchat
I'm working on de-emphasizing Greco-Roman empires in order to create more space for India, Assyria, Maya, and other non-Western cultures #HackLearning#TLAP#sunchat#PBL
The inclusion of other cultures will also help with interdisciplinary work with math, science, and art and allows us to #ditchbook and get out of the classroom #HackLearning#TLAP#sunchat
That's awesome. When I taught WH years ago, I had Ss open the book and choose what chapters they wanted to cover. I had a few non-negotiable chaps, but other than that, they chose. #sunchat

sounds similar! Mine choose a culture for a time period and use the text as an anchor but then branch out into other resources, they then jigsaw with other cultures to make comparisons and notice trends #HackLearning#TLAP#sunchat
Our AP Human Geography T does a lot of jigsaw like that. Ss get so much more out of the exploration. I'm trying to build that into my Modern US class more this semester. Ss choice is key. #sunchat#tlap
I LOVE writing curriculum, and truly feel that teachers, those deep in the trenches, should be a part of the process in every district. How do we take what the state mandates and make it engaging and relevant for our students? #sunchat
Both! Digital portfolios are AWESOME since they showcase ability to work with technology as well. I use Google Sites for digital portfolios. The end product is outstanding! #Google#EdChat#HackLearning
I have a similar one for Middle School: What did I do well? What did I find challenging? How did I do at citing? Did I have many grammar errors? (they highlight with help of T or S). And, what grade do you deserve for this effort? #sunchat
Okoboji. There's a location that you don't hear of often, but 3 years ago my daughter and our church group did a project at the camp there. They had an awesome week. #sunchat

Our Ts hang their curriculum on the wall & make changes as the year goes on. Then every few years departments will meet & revamp. They teach better when they own it. #sunchat
As a former SS T, my curriculum would be entirely based on thematic thru lines that have a social emotional component & social justice lens for multiple perspectives rather than teaching history chronologically #sunchat
Yes, our smokestacks should be horizontal. Any way you can do a trial group in your school to see if it is feasible? or are the rules too stringent to allow that, Carla? #sunchat
My mind goes to music curriculum, since that's the subject I taught. One thing I like about it is that it not as prescribed as some other subjects - standards are there, but can be taught through all different kinds of music. #sunchat
First thing I do is give them a writing prompt: "What I Would Do with One Billion Dollars." You will find out everything you need to know about your students. What they like, what their life is like, who's in jail; they will literally tell you everything. Then build. #sunchat
I love this. Curriculum SHOULD be a fluid thing. If our job is to meet the needs of our students, we can't rely on it as fixed, rigid structure. #sunchat

#sunchat#struggles Even though I'm creating my own curriculum having trouble with logistics. 4 small groups; each group reading different GN on rotation. What exactly am I wanting them to do?
Yes! Resume-building should be done starting in 8th grade. Kids can get their first jobs at 14, so they should be looking at how to highlight their skill sets and present them to an employer! #sunchat

To be perfectly honest, this is a hard question! We have a Midmester Academy twice a year - 15 days each time- that are totally PBL classes based on our passions & Ss interest! #sunchat
I tried to use a Thematic approach for US history 17 yrs ago, but was told that it would never work & don't do it. Fast-forward 13 yrs & my daughter's US T was presenting at NCSS & receiving recognition for thematic approach to US History. #sunchat
My current passion is ensuring the ELA classroom is an ACTIVE experience by infusing it with the concept of #STEAM. Students need to see the skills associated with reading/writing are needed in all fields. Real. World. Relevance. #sunchat
@bonnisolomon - every time they write there is an opportunity to throw in a grammar lesson. I still can't believe it's not really prevalent in all the standards - it assumes the kids know how to construct sentences! (but we know better!) #sunchat
My principal is super supportive of my crazy visions! In my ELA classroom we will be starting blogging next week, which has been on my bucket list to do w Ss! #sunchat
Then make practical examples. If you're teaching percents for tipping and tax, use their favorite restaurants. Use the local grocery stores to do unit pricing. Keep everything related directly to them so they never get to ask, "When am I going to use this?" #sunchat
Moral of the Story: Don't let people tell you that "it won't work" when they haven't tried. Follow your passion and use research to support your ideas! #sunchat

I feel the same way about LA - standards are there, but Ts can choose to teach them any novels, ind reading units, or writing genre they love. #sunchat
A curriculum that has no content borders. No straight lines. No DEPARTMENT barriers. Standards are good but in isolation they have no room to breathe. #sunchat
I LIKE that freedom, because teachers & students tend to engage more about things they are more passionate about! I struggle to know how to extend this idea to other content areas - obviously won't look the same, but how can we bring in elements? #sunchat

So, I'm thinking about this Susan. Maybe I could pilot this with my 12th grade Ts - they're all incredibly creative risk-takers... could be a cool possibility #sunchat
Yes, our smokestacks should be horizontal. Any way you can do a trial group in your school to see if it is feasible? or are the rules too stringent to allow that, Carla? #sunchat
I am going to be just like @carlameyrink when I grow up. It is also why her Ts gotta turn in lesson plans. They are not told what to do! Making me think about moving again #sunchat
Have them prepare a dinner party using a fixed budget and the local supermarket papers. They have no idea how much things cost - it is eye-opening. #sunchat
in SS we start with their interests and passions. that becomes their starting point for studying the ancient cultures. Like music? Do research on how hominids discovered percussion. Medicine? Why/how did Egyptians discard the brain during mummification? #sunchat
My fav class to teach is Economics, and if I had my way it would be a whole semester! There are so many relevant concepts and topics to discuss in that class. A semester is never long enough! #sunchat
I asked my ? bc we seem to be sharing the how and not much of the what. I am really curious what people teach at particular grade levels. Is everyone using CC? My state had to drop it. #sunchat
I revamped my course for 1st semester, and failed (a lot). I wrote reflections of what wasn't working throughout the semester. I sat down over Christmas break and revamped it again. Week 1 was phenomenal. #sunchat
Thank you for the ideas & keep them coming! I always think it's amazing to learn from other subject areas so we can all support the kiddos in a holistic school experience. #sunchat
Think about most powerful lessons / activities you had as a student (playing Oregon Trail, creating own Gov't in Civics, creative writing Fridays) - what drew you to those activities (engagement, tech in meaningful ways, student voice), and how can you encourage these? #sunchat
YES! I can't wait to see how it works! Then, you'll go on tour letting all others know that it SHOULD BE DONE THAT WAY, and we'll all live happily ever after! #sunchat#trailblazer
I have a history T who never teaches the same way from year to year. He covers the same general content, but uses different projects to do it. And in senior Science Ss choose how they'll show mastery of standards .So I think it's possible #sunchat

Carla will have to expand her school because I think we all want to work with her. lol - We'll need the population of the Dom Repub to explode to support all of us... but our tans will be great! #sunchat
That depends on how overbearing your upper admin is. We were forced to use a scripted curriculum at one point. If we deviated, we were not following it "with fidelity." #sunchat

I was drawn to lessons that gave me choice and let me be creative. I don’t remember a single worksheet I did but I remember preparing my speech when I researched and acted as Bess Truman. #sunchat S/O Mrs. Whitney!!
I like the lite!! There were so many things that had the + for math. That was just optional anyway. I like that you guys choose to do even less so that mastery is almost possible #sunchat
But they work hard. They teach 12 classes a week & have 11 planning periods, but still take work home. Trying to figure out how to improve that #sunchat
Gamifying the classroom is amazing. I'll be spending a lot more time with @mrmatera & his #xplap crew at @USMSpark in June. I've already gamified the 1970's, but it's just a start. #sunchat
We need to get together as educatos nd share curriculum/standards and determine which overlap, enhance, extend, and reinforce each other and build our teaching around that collaboration. Deep learning by focusing on big picture rather than "6.a.3.1 Students will" #sunchat
This is pretty much my worst fear. Scripted curriculum - how are we supposed to encourage our students to be independent thinkers & individuals when we are being robots? #sunchat
People who care and want to work will always do things from home. I am not sure you can ever stop that. I think having less classes than planning time like Japan is the best goal #sunchat
I also think this is an equity issue. Look at what school districts have scripted curriculums - what innovative explorations are those students being denied? Why? What type of teachers are we driving away with these? #sunchat

So glad it never happened to me in my career. I would definitely become an administrators worst nightmare if that is what they want to pursue. I would say no lovingly though #sunchat
I would add more classroom transformations embedded into curriculum;) I’ve already taken away spelling, homework and behavior chart- was sooooo worth it!
#sunchat
Exactly. What’s the point of a highly educated and motivated teacher when then their creativity and innovation is striped away? I don’t think this encourages professional development in teachers. #sunchat
When reading #ccss standard 3.OA.D.4, I interpret this as meaning that 3rd graders do not need to know order of operations and specifically where to place parenthesis. Yet I am seeing more and more "ccss curricula" enforcing this. Thoughts? #elemMathchat#sunchat#3rdchat
This (not scripted curriculum, but standing up when necessary) is basically my #oneword2018 blog post: https://t.co/OSYKWZURHk. Or at least where a lot of the inspiration for it came from! #sunchat
I see some great graphic novel comments here! Awesome. If anyone wants resources and lesson plans, I post a lot on https://t.co/DlJiUZCv4j . We start March in a week! Can’t wait! #sunchat

agreed. I don't have a behavior chart. I just tell them with a smile they are on my "list". Having a relationship with them makes them not want to disappoint me. I always forgive - tomorrow is another day. Works for me just fine! #sunchat
Yes! Please - if you are teaching with comics and graphic novels, you have to show students how to read them first. Many have never read the medium before and can get lost/confused. #sunchat
Great discussion - I think we are all inspired to think outside of the box a bit in our classrooms in terms of our curriculum. See you all next Sunday on #sunchat! See you in the morning at 5:30 on #bfc530!

I would like teachers to see the whole child/not just standards- one standard looks different for a child with disabilities- My hope is for #inclusion speaking as teacher & parent of child with Down Syndrome. No matter the disability there is ALWAYS ABILITY ❤️ #sunchat
Definitely - in our elementary it's a little easier since Ts teach all subjects. They can meld them into one project. In secondary, it's a little more complex, but I think it's doable. Have you read Soundings by Mark Springer? #sunchat

Here's a fun activity I made in cooperation with a local retailer when I found out that my kids like Yu-Gi-Oh. I make little videos with an iPhone, a cheap tripod, and an external mic. When making your curriculum, customize it! Be a YoutTuber! https://t.co/yz4KShBuJm#sunchat
