Join us for our district's monthly twitter chat focusing on "Integrating the Arts" on February 1st from 7-8 pm. Come and chat about how to integrate music, art, and other specialized areas into your classroom to build learning across the content areas!
To start, tell us a little about you! Share your name, where you work & your favorite Arts Discipline (music, art, drama, etc.). Don’t forget to use the hashtag #CCSEdChat!
Heather - AIG consultant/teacher at NCIES & CMES - thrilled to be here for another #CCSEdChat - No way I can pick a favorite - I love all the arts! You should know that @twkellyMRES
A1) About a 4 on incorporating the arts. I love the arts and love to incorporate modeling and creating, but I know I could do better. @twkellyMRES#CCSEdChat
Q2A2 My perfect arts integration would be allowing students the choice to demonstrate whatever the content learning is through the arts - they are much more talented than I could ever be #CCSEdChat
A2) One of my favorite examples is the integration of arts and science (ie: making music w/ bottles of water or building instruments out of recyclables) #CCSEdChat#artsed
A2: My perfect integration would be seeing music (that's my discipline) infused with learning outside of my classroom, authentically. Such as music and math with fractions. #CCSEdChat
A3) Same old same old - time constraints. But sometimes it really is simply my forgetfulness to consider it like I should. (full disclosure) Occasionally finding good materials and getting organized can get in the way too. I guess there are lots of barriers. #CCSEdChat#artsed
Integrating the arts takes skills I don't have! Finding time for collaboration with the experts would be a barrier for me if I were still in the classroom. #CCSEdChat
A3 effective classroom mgmt, personal arts limitations (in my case my visual arts skills are limited), possibly limited mindset of school admin #CCSEdChat
Sounds like we need to be able to have a #growthmindset and feel like it is ok to not know how to do something because the students will find ways to do it if we just let them. #CCSEdChat#artsed
A3: Time to plan with general education teachers is a barrier. There are multiple opportunities for collaboration, if we could sit and do some thoughtful planning. #CCSEdChat

Not to derail the conversation, but 5/4/2018... VSA... find a self contained EC teacher in ur bldg and ask about it and to volunteer that day. May the fourth be with you! #CCSEdChat
A3- time constraints are the biggest hindrance to integrating arts into the classroom. It can be done though if it is well thought out. Students are creative and need to be given the appropriate time to show that. #ccsedchat
A4) Worked w/ art teacher to extend our OREO project - kids built sculptures with the cookies & filling after we stacked towers and submitted our average to the global @ProjectsByJen#CCSEdChat
A4 Helping our Art T plan for her National Boards. Brainstorming ways to integrate what she needs to do for them, her curriculum, and 4th grade SS. ALWAYS helping the music T with grade level performances! #CCSEdChat
A4) Students created Google Logo/Doodle using Scratch with art/music themes earlier this year too #CCSEdChat The art teacher received $$ to use on @DonorsChoose and 4 of our designs were featured by Google/Donorschoose
A4: Designing service-learning projects that engage students to be civically engaged. For example, painting a mural at a local park as part of a broader community beautification effort. #CCSEdChat
Keep in mind...Visual arts, dance, even theater are always of incorporating the arts into your classroom. Great ways to supplement text sets and overall literacy as well. #CCSEdChat
A2. I liked creating units in my middle school general music class. I did a geography, economics, math combination by having students create their own "band" and plan their US tour. #CCSEdChat
Q5 It allows them to build on their interests and strengths and promotes acceptance and recognition of various gifts, talents, and intelligences. #CCSEdchat
Q5) We know the research. The brain makes loads more connections when there is music involved, visual stimulations, and movement. It's just a fact! #CCSEdChat#artsed
A4 our pk teachers do it all in class. Core instructors, art music pe teachers, we are nurses, food service, and parent coaches too. However we need to work even more with the other experts in our bldgs too #CCSEdChat
A3 A4 I think google docs can help connect with educators you can't always physically meet with. I used to always get copies of grade level plans so I could support them. #CCSEdChat
A5: It also helps to reach those students who may need information presented in a different way. Our job is to use every tool we have and the arts can be one. #CCSEdChat
You are so right. We do need to use every tool. I may not be really skilled at the tool but that doesn't mean I shouldn't put it in the hands of someone who might be. #CCSEdChat
A6) Well - the coding project I mentioned earlier was one way. Digital photography & green screen open doors. Software like audacity lets kids record podcasts & overlay music. Just so many many ways! #CCSEdChat
Gotta go! My Lego man needs to be put to bed for school. Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise. Check out our students art on walls of ERC next time u all are there. #CCSEdChat
A6) Our students all have iPads with apps like Garage Band and iMovie (and many more) that can be incorporated to create songs and videos @twkellyMRES#CCSEdChat
A6: Tech tools like online music mixers or even apps can help in math with color coded rhythm patterns. Creating book trailers with soundtracks can help in ELA to convey mood. #CCSEdChat
For sure. I came across a bunch of bamboo tablets that Ss can use to create. Checked them out from the media center. Ss created backpack designs using Tynkercad and we printed some on our Makerbot 3D printer. #CCSEdChat#EDEx
What a great tip! Love the idea of conveying mood! In fact, listening to mood music right now. Tuning out the TV so I can Tune In to our discussion. LoL #CCSEdChat

Hearing these great ideas makes me think of seeing a video about a low performing HS in another state that got $$$ to put in a recording studio and what that did for attendance, behavior, academics!!! I want that for our HS students as an option! #CCSEdChat
A7) Gotta give this some more thought. Looking for ideas from others. Maybe incorporating math skills with design processes that encourage students to create technical drawings. #CCSEdChat
A8: Even if we can't build them into the lesson, give students connections to explore in their free time during class or at home. Using @edmodo or Google Classroom can be great for this. #CCSEdChat
A8) My favorite question is how can we work together to blend what we are doing in both the art/music classrooms and the gen ed class. Coming up with projects like the OREO one I mentioned earlier where we collaborate is really the BEST! #CCSEdChat
I just want to thank you all for making my first twitter chat a success and I hope to collaborate in the future! I have gained great new ideas and insights -Thank you #CCSEdchat
