Good to see you, my man. Welcome!
Q1: When you think about perseverance, resilience, and grit in education, what comes to mind? Do you have an example to share?
A1 Sometimes sticky with an initiative that has been started and not jumping to the next great thing.
A1) I think of teachers who are just so exhausted mentally going into the last couple weeks of school, and saddling up still!
A1: Seeing something through. Not changing initiatives or ideas because something early went wrong or not as planned
A1 The S that drives you nuts w behavior, but you know that something great is in there.
A1 The work some of my challenged Ss put in everyday! Amazed at work ethic and tenacity.
A1: When a S takes hours to complete their MAP test. They are determined to answer them all correctly. Designed not to.
A1 continuing to keep kids first above all else
This is key! Make the days count to create a lasting impact! https://t.co/SUqNaZHhyS
A1) I think of teachers who are just so exhausted mentally going into the last couple weeks of school, and saddling up still!
A1: Overcoming obstacles with a learning attitude. Knowing that all experiences help us grow- defeat and failure aren’t options.
A1: I think about kids and adults working really hard for long periods of time on goals, assignments and projects that matter.
A1: I think of Ss that overcome obstacles has a Students 1st Banquet that exemplifies P,R,&G https://t.co/jCK2yFZSJY
A1: I think of Ss that overcome obstacles has a Students 1st Banquet that exemplifies P,R,&G https://t.co/9MStTdQqYV
A1- regardless of what the state chooses to do for funding, I am so proud of the effort my staff gives to educating our kids!
A1 Kinderland any day of the week...those kiddos persevere w/ everything they do. We demand so much & they perform, it is AMAZING!
Hello . Looking for a school admin that wants to connect and talk about digital citizenship. DM me if you have an interest. Thanks
Efforts should always be celebrated! https://t.co/QZ2mhERFuc
A1- regardless of what the state chooses to do for funding, I am so proud of the effort my staff gives to educating our kids!
Using Hattie's research as a filter to distinguish how & what to focus time/energy
A1 I think of a couple of students who have lots going on outside of school, yet continue to come, work hard with no excuses
A1: There is always a lot going on in schools and there is always going to be challenges. Keep making a difference everyday.
A1 I immediately think of what we are putting students through starting in 3rd grade. Test grow in rigor annually. Bar moves $
A1.2 I also think about how hard our jobs are, and then I think about how hard some of our Ss lives are. Perspective. Empathy.
One day at a time, Josh. Slowly defining culture. https://t.co/Ama6rwnOZL
A1: There is always a lot going on in schools and there is always going to be challenges. Keep making a difference everyday.
A1: it is amazing to watch Ts and Ss hang in there the last few weeks to get things accomplished with so much distraction around.
A1: It's the triumph of something that was once thought insurmountable...seeing the path when once thought lost in the dark...
A1 When I have those Ss who will come in for retakes and REALLY care that they get it.
A1: I love it when the teacher says "All students getting an 'A' on this assignment cause I'm not grading it till it's an 'A'"
A1: watching a student struggle through decoding a long tough word...followed by a proud grin one they get it
A1; I think of projects where funding had to be secured; needed to be built. Then completed by hard work and never giving up.
This is awesome...it shows that all a kiddo needs is additional time and support to achieve success! https://t.co/9Okm4M1jkO
A1: I love it when the teacher says "All students getting an 'A' on this assignment cause I'm not grading it till it's an 'A'"
Nick Proud, principal Checking in while I wait for our carry out from .
A1. . S's that have all the obstacles imaginable, yet smile, work, learn, and just want loved everyday.
I think of a Sped S who struggled to read; would read the story, ask me 2-3 words after he was done; then answer the ?s correctly
Welcome, my man. Good to see you.
Q2: Angela Lee Duckworth has said that grit is passion and perseverance toward goals and the key to education. Your thoughts...
A1: I think of ELL students and their families working on classroom content and language challenges
A1: Not grading paper until student makes sure they have all their capitalization and punct needed. Not letting them slip by.
Hopefully the assignment is meaningful and relevant. Worksheets suck? https://t.co/vTgymmV1Lj
A1: I love it when the teacher says "All students getting an 'A' on this assignment cause I'm not grading it till it's an 'A'"
Absolutely inspiring. https://t.co/10Krz5Du1j
A1: I think of ELL students and their families working on classroom content and language challenges
When both the Ss and Ts buy into that no-fail attitude…. great things will happen! https://t.co/Dq6XOH2vtn
A1: I love it when the teacher says "All students getting an 'A' on this assignment cause I'm not grading it till it's an 'A'"
We have this going on at the moment too--their hard work and that of their teacher, amaze me
Allison, 4th grade teacher
Welcome, Allison. Good to see you again on
A.1 . T's & S's putting it all on the line to achieve end of the year goals for S's. But then seeing S's faces when they make it!
A1: I have a framed poster in my office of Jordan dunking from FT line. I inscribed the caption: "What are you rising above?"
A2: Passion leads to purpose...without both, it is tough to hold onto perseverance...
A2: I agree...I would also add dedication & commitment towards that goal. Grit is an essential component to success at all levels
A2: If our kids have grit and the tenacity to work hard to achieve goals, it is my belief that success will come their way often.
A2: Goals and persevering are the imperative driving forces to help us grow and change to better our Ss and ourselves.
Q2: Grit is not only the key to education, but life. Teaching students how NOT to give up may be our single most important lesson.
A2: the difference between average & extraordinary is that little but extra. It's working harder & smarter at the same time
A2 unfortunately often times in education, as a student, the goals are not your own
A2: Perseverance is not a taught skill, but it is a developed skill. We must allow kids to struggle and Ts must embrace the mess.
A2: Love the sound of the word grit. As you say/hear it you just sense the amount of hard work that gets put into those tasks.
Q2: Such a great reminder as we get bogged down. We are models for our Ss - some see us work hard - so they work hard too!
A2 Passion, not for the subject or assignment, but for the effort in learning. It's a choice, everyday, do that.
A2: Having a common goal in mind. Need teacher/student buy-in. Use UbD-Start with end in mind, use all time allotted. No waste.
A2 I think it goes to the growth mindset that will determine outcomes for Ss. If they understand how they think good will come.
The idea of grit is great. But how do promote all teachers to practice it? This is where I see schools struggle.
I don't even need an answer for Q2...DITTO! https://t.co/C3fC1C26Ec
Q2: Grit is not only the key to education, but life. Teaching students how NOT to give up may be our single most important lesson.
A2 I can live with her definition. Beyond that, it's a NEVER GIVE UP attitude rerrgardles of setbacks. They will come!
A2 Without passion, without purpose..there is no learning. Walk into a passionate room w/ purposeful work & learning is inevitable!
A2: add stamina, focus, & self efficacy to the list of what shows grit
A2: Beginning with "passion" for Ss & Ts helps them develop the perseverance to reach goals. Really tough when passion is lacking.
Absolutely goes with a growth mindset! https://t.co/Vw7hRzCNla
A2 I think it goes to the growth mindset that will determine outcomes for Ss. If they understand how they think good will come.
A2: what will I need to get to where I'm going so that I won't give up
A2- agreed, grit to me is the courage to resolve that which has not been accomplished!
A2: Grit is digging-in, keep going, giving more than you thought you could b/c you want something so bad https://t.co/WHFL8cNhfA
This is a great thought. Whose bar are you rising above!? Make what you’re striving for relevant to you. https://t.co/Qzg5ZMIWqg
A1: I have a framed poster in my office of Jordan dunking from FT line. I inscribed the caption: "What are you rising above?"
A2: only place success comes before work is in the dictionary... Gotta roll up your sleeves... https://t.co/keKY7l1ezt
A2 We need to encourage perseverance. I see many Ss with a passion but they don't work towards a goal. Just want it to happen
I think getting a staff who's committed to your building goal would help. Not onboard then kick them off the "boat".
This chat is rolling along very well. Q3 is right around the corner!
I like that line. but Ss probably wonder what a dictionary is.
A2: Grit, passion, perseverance is not just key in education; these are the keys to success in LIFE! https://t.co/FZeH4sfuEG
Q2: Angela Lee Duckworth has said that grit is passion and perseverance toward goals and the key to education. Your thoughts...
I've been showing my students my master's hw recently to give them an example of my perseverance. ;)
A2: Passion and perseverance is very key and Ts need to be role models to show their student to stick towards the goal.
Jumping in to a bit late, but looks like a great discussion going on. :-)
It’s key to model this for Ss. Show them our struggles so it’s not foreign, it’s a part of overcoming. https://t.co/cusWAyaIla
Q2: Grit is not only the key to education, but life. Teaching students how NOT to give up may be our single most important lesson.
A.2 It's inspiring to see staff be on setting goals with S's and working tirelessly to achieve those goals.
Q3: Quality relationships are said to be the cornerstone of resilience in Ss. Talk about how you build relationships w/ all kids.
I agree, sometimes Teachers have similar behaviors. Want successes with the Ss but not willing to work for it.
hahahaha yes, sadly you're right
Nice. I think sometimes they believe a magic fairy comes
A3 Try to get to know something besides school related topics. Show an interest in them outside of school.
I like being one of the first and last they see when arriving and leaving school. Genuine conversations.
My students stopped complaining about writing one paragraph when I showed them my 50 pages of writing. ;)
I agree--and see it happen. Education is hard work on everyone's part
Great strategy, Jason. I am the same way. https://t.co/kxcIpT1DSB
I like being one of the first and last they see when arriving and leaving school. Genuine conversations.
We should all stand together and not allow blanket goals! :) Ownership in personalized goals is needed! https://t.co/dCXwcsWKmE
A2 unfortunately often times in education, as a student, the goals are not your own
A3 Relationships are built through consistency, trust, and authenticity in the relationship. Gotta be real.
A3: Make time to attend extra curricular events
Yikes! I'll quit whining about blog posts too :)
Can we kick kids out of classroom if not on board with learning? I don’t think rejecting Ts a solution.
I used to show them my thesis as well. It definitely made them stop and think.
A3: We need to be there for our students each and every day. There to greet, listen, and support them in their daily endeavors.
A3: Be where the kids are...play at recess, read to them in classrooms, dance with them at drop-off...
A3: I listen to their story & I end every conversation with 2 questions: did I treat you fairly and do you think I care about you?
A3: Call them by name and take a personal interest in them! Talk to them like the spectacular little humans that they are.
A3: Ask genuine questions, truly care. Follow up, and compliment them. It's the little things
A3: Talk WITH them. Smile. Get to know them, let them get to know me. Ask them Qs. Give them all the chances that they need.
We not only meet students where they are academically, but socially and emotionally as well. Tough conversations go along way!
Q3: Invest in students and what matters to them - ask about the game last night, their work schedule, & how they learn best. Care.
I agree that conversations much match practices. Create a culture of growth mindset through PD. https://t.co/xwwoDS2uQ5 .
A3- Greeting each student every morning& saying goodbye every night also like to talk to each student about their books
A2 I think teaching Ss not to give up is a huge challenge as many have been trained not to by too many “helpful” adults
A3: Don't be the judge/jury/executioner, listening to your students is key!
A3 keep remembering this S is someone's #1 someone's heart & soul if you remember that you will build genuine & solid r'ships
A3 First five days are the most important in my room. We work on bldg comm during that time.
A3: Our teachers signed up to be "lifelines" to students identified "at risk" at the beginning of the year. Extraordinary TLC.
A.3 S's will be all in when they know wout ? that you are consistently for them. Everyday. All day.
This is so important to infuse into learning about how to achieve goals. The hard work has to be included. https://t.co/WiJWOZqrfh
A2 We need to encourage perseverance. I see many Ss with a passion but they don't work towards a goal. Just want it to happen
A3: I also try to go to different events in the community they are taking part in.
A3: If I know something is important to my students such as school play or rival bball game, I'm there
A3: be present, be visible, listen when you ask them a ?. Make it clear that they matter every day.
A3: using "extra" time to get to know them & let them know me. Not every minute needs to be scripted. Talk to kids. They respond.
RESOURCE:
Perseverance, Resilience, and Grit. A post about the best example that I have ever witnessed: https://t.co/991Ph7Ji86
RESOURCE:
Perseverance, Resilience, and Grit. A post about the best example that I have ever witnessed: https://t.co/t8tARoXN1f
A3 1st 5 days we also talk about expectations, how to succeed, being our best
A3 Making as many events as possible to support their interests. Visibility throughout the school is also critical. Lunch Duty!
A3: Genuine conversations about them and what they like. Perfect opportunity to do that in the library. ❤ excitement about books!
A3: taking the time to move away from the lesson to get to know what is on their mind
A3 I try to connect with them on some level with their interests beyond my classroom
A3- must admit, all kids tough. Those accelerating in academics or extra curriculars & those struggling easy. Those in the middle?
A3.2 be involved in your community...show your passions and interests and how to contribute!
Late to the party at tonight. Ready to catch up!
A3 begin each day with a morning meeting greet, share, build our 5C family. Can see it working when Ss will share 'the hard stuff"
A3: Seek conversations, solve problems w/ Ss, connect Ss w/ community, get involved in Ss clubs/groups, teach class here or there!
A3 I'm lucky that I teach upper classmen mostly and usually have them several times. Makes relationship bldg easier
It is so key to make everyone in the school setting to let them know that they matter! https://t.co/4aVFkDDEy0
A3: be present, be visible, listen when you ask them a ?. Make it clear that they matter every day.
Yeah I didnt mean to come off harsh. I'm just thinking of t's who constantly complain about trying new things.
Starting off and ending their day on the right foot is so important! https://t.co/RQSqsOMCOM
I like being one of the first and last they see when arriving and leaving school. Genuine conversations.
A3. Do not underestimate that you empower students when you know their name and remind them their presence in school matters.
A3 We write and talk a lot about our lives . It's important for ALL of us to remember that there is life out of school
A3: I stayed up late coloring a # naruto poster I drew for our wall so that one student had one thing he could connect w in class
A3: I love walking around lunch room & talking with kids as they interact with their peers. Every conversation reinforces Ss value
A3. Schools that prioritize relationships have won half the battle.
These things seem so small but will move mountains! https://t.co/CLdfqJJKC9
A3: Ask genuine questions, truly care. Follow up, and compliment them. It's the little things
A3: There is absolutely no substitute for authenticity when working with kids ... or any other humans.
A3: Build relationships w/ kids is no different than adults. Must connect w/ them on different levels, academics, personal, etc.
Q4: Grit is not just having resilience in the face of failure, but also having deep commitments. Reflect and respond.
A3: I really enjoy solving problems with Ss, in school, community, or any level. Power in working with them to improve things.
Why than is it not in more focus or purpose statements? Always amazes me when key tool is ignored. https://t.co/q4UsGt24C3
A3. Schools that prioritize relationships have won half the battle.
A3: we build relationships every day. Spent ten minutes talking wrestling (sport I don't get) w a student on Friday. Make time
This sounds fantastic! https://t.co/KhyvU4wr3o
A3: Our teachers signed up to be "lifelines" to students identified "at risk" at the beginning of the year. Extraordinary TLC.
We’re all going to fail many, many times in what we do. This doesn’t mean we can’t be committed towards our goals.
A4 Commitment is a huge piece to any topic not just learning. As I say a lot is this the hill you want to be on.
A4: If we’re true to mission, purpose, we work to live it each day, even when difficult/unpopular. Attitude reflects leadership
A4: Grit is what helps pull you forward and not give up when perseverance and resilience begin to waver.
A4: I do think we consider grit only when times are tough. Important to remember to set goals that matter to us and stick w/ them.
A4: I agree..without commitment the goal or goals may never be reached. I think reflection is an important aspect as well.
A4 Commitment is sooo intrinsic. Important to build that ability.
A4: What do you value? Do you communicate your values? Through your words? Through your actions?
Q4: For students to develop grit, they must see purpose in what they are trying to achieve. Let them set goals that matter to them
Love this https://t.co/r2xYqX55VK
A4: I do think we consider grit only when times are tough. Important to remember to set goals that matter to us and stick w/ them.
And do your actions match your beliefs? https://t.co/5aGZRXLeQo
A4: What do you value? Do you communicate your values? Through your words? Through your actions?
A4- I believe character is defined by what we are committed to.
As leaders of our buildings, it’s important to show students grit and that it doesn’t have to knock you down.
A4: Commitment is important. But what about Ts who find it hard to commit to top>down initiatives?
A4: focus on your WHY for teaching. Most likely it wasn't teaching content as much as it was the kids.
THESE QUESTIONS! So reflective. https://t.co/BzOAWuhimy
A4: What do you value? Do you communicate your values? Through your words? Through your actions?
This is so important. Same with adults. If the goal isn't personal, why would you work hard? https://t.co/FLdI5Pwtnj
Q4: For students to develop grit, they must see purpose in what they are trying to achieve. Let them set goals that matter to them
A4: Coming together for a vision, the ultimate test of our grit, challenged in new ways, grit will determine success.
YES!
https://t.co/qAFPrvwpxT
Q4: For students to develop grit, they must see purpose in what they are trying to achieve. Let them set goals that matter to them
A4: We honor our committment to our our goals - preserverence builds character right? :)
A4: grit is that reminder that you need to keep going to get to that goal...in good and bad times
A4:I teach, coach, am a father, husband, son & getting masters in Ed Leadership. Model to the kids the grit it takes to balance all.
Right! Own what you are committed to and commit to what you own. Live it! https://t.co/ciZ9aSDzEF
A4: What do you value? Do you communicate your values? Through your words? Through your actions?
A4: When we stay connected to our core values, we are able to transcend discouraging circumstances. Eyes on the prize!
A4: Commitments remind us of our goals and purpose. Such as our commitments to our students.
A4 Deep commitments allow failures not to destroy the willingness to be vulnerable and take chances. Support is critical.
A4 commitment lets you live out your purpose, it makes your goals more than actions, it is a mindset and livelihood
A3: Surveys, talk time in the morning, a couple of minutes of class, just finding spare moments where Ss interests are in front!
Just about ready for Q5. Keep bringing it,
That sounds like a killer t-shirt quote!!
A.4 To me it's all about, "Why are you in education? Get back to your foundation of choosing edu as your path. Kids, Kids, KIds!
Beautifully said, Kim!
https://t.co/lwNGtBetHk
A4 commitment lets you live out your purpose, it makes your goals more than actions, it is a mindset and livelihood
A4: Grit is doing the day to day stuff well, knowing it's building towards something bigger and better.
This! https://t.co/wxEb6xvsOQ
A4: Grit is doing the day to day stuff well, knowing it's building towards something bigger and better.
Q5: What have you used in your classroom, school, or district to instill perseverance, resilience, and grit. How has it worked?
A4 LOVE the use of "minigoals". S sets goals for math, posts on postit. Then reflects at end of day on why or not achieved.
A5: seldom have one and done assignments. Ss who don't do work get to do work again. I don't quit on them. They can't quit on me.
A5: I hold Ss to high expectations and expect them to meet me there and we celebrate everything along the way.
A5: book study w/ staff is one example. Topic directly relates to grit.
A5: I have tried to create the conditions within our culture for people to achieve more than they ever thought they could.
A5: Being there for Ts just to chat and have adult conversations & support them in any way I can: shoulder, ear, or suggestions.
A1 We have a T who has S do over because they're "not quite there" w/ writing. They love her AND learn! https://t.co/iOOyOKsmVN
Q1: When you think about perseverance, resilience, and grit in education, what comes to mind? Do you have an example to share?
A5: Having Ts go through Research, Integrate, Reflect, and Share practices growth mindset thru PD. https://t.co/AzKPhztrdg
A5: We created the "Aspire Higher" club to showcase students who have made progress on benchmarks. https://t.co/YFnOBOTTGC
A5 the Maker Movement has really allowed teachers to push Ss out of their comfort zones while learning and problem solving
Sounds like a great process for kids to monitor and own their progress. I love it.
A5a: We keep pushing the idea that hard work, working through the "stuff" that happens, that it will lead to good things!
A5 All money we have is spent on In-school tutors to reinforce skills/objectives for struggling Ss. We invest and it pays off!
A5 working through ST Math; daily looking at what Ss accomplished. Sitting with a S; trying a puzzle over/over till get it
It is great. Stole form someone on here! Reflection is the key that sets success.
A2. Imagine if we gave up when learning to ride s bike? Life is not about giving up- neither is education. https://t.co/bOHxLDcGHY
Q2: Angela Lee Duckworth has said that grit is passion and perseverance toward goals and the key to education. Your thoughts...
Grit means working when you don't feel like working, overcoming failure, and not worrying about what people think.
A5: Being an ear to bend for other T's and Ss just listening is sometimes all that us needed.
A5: The maker movement has given Ss and Ts more opportunities to these acquire mindsets. Ts are modeling what it takes.
A5.2 Ss tracking their own progress monitoring scores with goals in mind gives them ownership AND teaches grit
Excellent analogy, Karen. So important that we instill this within our kids.
A5b: How has it worked? Eh. It's hard to keep Ss focused on the bigger prize. They get distracted by life.
A5: Provide more PD opps & invest in Ts learning, SMART Lunch (needs work), SBG (needs time), At-Risk/Success Team (almost there)
A5. As principal, I have shared with Ss a time that I failed and what I did with that failure to persevere. Model resilience.
A3 I don't think they are but you can't implement a "gray" policy w/out educating parents and trust https://t.co/XKSIL9tSX5
Q3: Please explain the benefits and challenges of “black and white” discipline policies. Are these realistic?
Another way to showcase the different things Ss feel successful with as well as struggle with.
https://t.co/oBrNvbx5Z1
A5: The maker movement has given Ss and Ts more opportunities to these acquire mindsets. Ts are modeling what it takes.
A4 Not stopping...so exciting! We are opening the district with an Ed camp, are exploring .. https://t.co/mpwclqUrv0
Q4: What trend in personalized learning do you want to know more about? What’s stopping you?
dove in 2 taking all Kinder standards & creating goals for her S's. When met I had face 2 face 2 sign goal sheets.
Q5: Student target trackers: Students set goal, monitor progress, & know exactly how far they have to go. Powerful.
A5.2 diving into the goal setting process and communicating consistently w/ families has really paid off for S learning this year
Q6: How have you modeled what effort looks and sounds like to students, staff and stakeholders within your setting?
A5- we will have the largest Ss population but had to cut back on hires. Keep promoting the fact we are good enough to handle it.
A5 Revised grading policies and PD on differentiated assessment. We're getting there but a long way to go! https://t.co/58VrPluxk9
Q5: What have you used in your classroom, school, or district to instill perseverance, resilience, and grit. How has it worked?
I believe you have to personally model with your actions and behaviors what effort looks like for everyone to see.
It’s important to model this with students AND teachers! Model resiliency, not "perfection". https://t.co/PzR5mxCVXz
A5. As principal, I have shared with Ss a time that I failed and what I did with that failure to persevere. Model resilience.
will be starting in 15m, stop on by
A6 Leaders must model. I use committees often to seek the voice of opposition, hear all stakeholders https://t.co/zX3uNv8WdF
Q6: How have you modeled what effort looks and sounds like to students, staff and stakeholders within your setting?
A6: I have never called into work sick and I have never been a person that works bell to bell...I am always early and work late.
A6: Admit to failures as ways to learn and move forward. Don’t try to know everything, but empower others to use their knowledge.
A6: I try my best to model setting goals that impact our system. I do my best to show that I'm willing to do what it takes.
A6 Through providing immediate and meaningful feedback. My S's know my effort is there through our convos.
Absolutely. Such a high-impact practice. Well said, Jason. https://t.co/jtbXaruI5P
I believe you have to personally model with your actions and behaviors what effort looks like for everyone to see.
A6: Try to tackle this a little bit with the blog that I write, the conversations that I have, and the information that I share
A6: Model with words and actions. How easy are your to give up? Children see this. Our students and the ones who live with us!
A6: I like to work along with Ss to show that we all have to put forth our best effort in order to do things well.
A6- keeping positive attitude no matter the struggles we face. Each problem is an opportunity to make a difference. PROBLITUNITY!
