-
-
Oh you should check it out! It is a great conference… I heard there is going to be some ers next year too
-
Spark was great, what makes it cool is all of the crazy cool educators that come!
-
I love escape rooms. Glad you went to one.
-
Luke Abercromibe. High School science teacher in NC
-
-
A1: Money, we have our own silver pieces, and some power cards that Ss trade like $
-
-
Luke, you found us! YEAH! I hope you enjoy the chat on
-
A1: Games I play tend to give you items to help you later on. Getting "cash" in class helps purchase items for future use
-
A1: currency that I have is Gold and skills achieved throughout the year
-
ahhh, I'm jealous ! That is so cool. I want to do an escape room so bad!
-
A1 Bio teacher here, thinking about using ATP as currency. In some of the textbooks, it's even called "energy currency.".
-
A1: money for food truck race and XP for Masterchef
-
A1: really like skill coins. Can give them as kids for something tangible when they level up. In sight, in mind?
-
A1: Stars in Angry Birds, Elixir in Clash of Clans, The properties in monopoly are all great examples of currencies in action.
-
A1 I play Just Dance with my daughter and earn stars. I could make xp for Ss performing arts in class https://t.co/VrbTH3rT6c
-
A1: Use items such as wheat, water, etc as currency, have to collect so many to get other things.
-
A1 we have school wide panther pride tickets. I also will give out treats sometimes.
-
Love your point about in sight, in mind!
-
A1 (2): Keep thinking of all the games that only give you a star and yet they are super addicting.
-
A1: Punchcards (like at Subway) are also game like and are easier to track (unless your kids lose them like mine did.)
-
Thanks, looking forward to it!
-
A1: I always include plain old points in any game I have used. I will often give them a special name to go with the theme
-
Now you are cooking! Currencies don’t have to just be money. Nice idea and can’t wait to hear more from ya!
-
A1 I always think of monopoly money first but coins or tokens that you earn could work as well.
-
Oh, how I missed you all! Q2 coming at ya in 2!
-
A1 I also want to explore how to create/customize badges.
-
Great game engine mechanic that you are using… Collect, save, and choose an upgrade
-
A 1 . Planning to use some special Amazing Race currency and possibly wooden coins
-
These are great! We use them to award Warrior dollars. Ss put them on lanyards to keep track. https://t.co/5FLCcg4o8J
-
-
A1: Punchcards (like at Subway) are also game like and are easier to track (unless your kids lose them like mine did.)
-
thanks, thanks! I'm new to twitter so I'll probably be a wall flower for a bit, but I'm looking forward to learning
-
Super true! Does not have to always equal money.
-
-
A1 Starbucks uses stars that you earn and collect as well.
-
A!: Paper money, coins, stars, points, XP. I keep going back and forth on if I want a physical or digital currency for my class.
-
Thanks! By the end of the year Ss had created full on spreadsheets to keep track of city resources. https://t.co/0AUYobfJzW
-
-
Great game engine mechanic that you are using… Collect, save, and choose an upgrade
-
Thanks. I was scared that I didn't answer the question very well.
-
I think you are doing great at jumping right in! impressive!
-
A1 most of my high schoolers go crazy over class dojo points, believe it or not.
-
A1: I saw a teacher who used raffle tickets as class currency - wish I could find his site again. Seemed very manageable.
-
A1: players earned skill crystals to power up character
-
I love this , I use this bathroom badge and locker badge
-
Or the properties in monopoly are also examples of currencies.
-
A1: As I grew as a game designer I added currency...pts only a sub could give or pts that could only be earned for a skill/behavior
-
Badges worked for some of my Ss this year. Need to be more specific about purpose/how earn though. Jumped in too quickly
-
You will love it! Teaching has changed for me since I joined.
-
we all missed you! would not be the same without ya!
-
A2: Cards like an Ace or 8's in crazy 8's, could have specific values or powers
-
A2: GamerScore on xbox is great, I use StudentScore for my classroom management layer.
-
haha I think we are all a little crazy! It was great meeting so many people I tweet with!
-
Love the idea of lanyards
-
Thanks for participating , we are better together, all good answers
-
A2: working on a zombie game where you collect anti-virus and materials to survive
-
A2 xp points... or how about levels? How can Ss earn ranks such as boss?
-
A1: When I first started I also had currency that was as simple as cut out starts teams earned
-
I couldn’t agree more with Nick! is the way to be.
-
One of my partners did this. She had a drawing each Friday. Ss went nuts! https://t.co/oklbQM9s03
-
-
A1: I saw a teacher who used raffle tickets as class currency - wish I could find his site again. Seemed very manageable.
-
A2: Badges, stars, Stickers, the list goes on
-
that is a great idea!!! You could have tons of fun with that!!!
-
A1: I use 2 variations on currency: Badges to earn privileges, and XP is tied to Gold (10 XP = 1 Gold) to buy items.
-
A2: I've had Ss earn michelin stars in culinary in The Hundred Foot Journey and also in Amazing Race
-
A2 I'm wondering if bartering would work to build comm. in class. Ss use their strengths to help peers. https://t.co/k20IIqGU8b
-
The points only a sub can give is such a great idea! https://t.co/MuefvK9EhI
-
-
A1: As I grew as a game designer I added currency...pts only a sub could give or pts that could only be earned for a skill/behavior
-
I'm thinking about adding ap (achievement points) as a possible form or currency to my game which could be earned by earning badges
-
I am a big fan of physical. I do have digital “Gold” that is kept on my spreadsheet but the rest is physical.
-
A2: Love using XP or the like to "gate" activities. Surprisingly motivating to say "nope, sorry, you can't do that yep"
-
Haha I think I'm seeing that already. :)
-
A2: In one statistics game we used sampling to identify and measure epidemics. Currency of success was lives saved.
-
I also had Ss knock down tower pieces in angry birds. It was a beast to keep up with but Ss loved it!!
-
I love that. I am motivated to get my badge.
-
A2: Bartering and auctioning are found in a lot of games, especially MMORPGs. Not sure how I would use that in class though.
-
Yikes! Already 15 minutes in. Sandy Otto, middle school ELA teacher from Mn. Excited to have made it.
-
I use Dojo points to let the buy things around the class, like preferred seat. 4th graders loved it
-
Now imagine those points wrapped into a game you created that gives them more meaning and context.
-
I was leaning toward physical, until I learned I will be seeing 22 classes next year. Wondering how to store it...
-
A2: I print out badges the size of baseball cards and laminate. Ss keep in baseball card sleeve. idea...works great!
-
what does a power up do for characters in your game?
-
yep, having fun playing with my new toys and writing a breakout! So grateful for the swag!
-
I teach high school and the physical badges works well for them too.
-
A1: Currency really is anything our Ss can barter with
-
Loved meeting at and learning about from you, Rebeca.
-
1 binder w/baseball card holder. When 1 earns something take it out and give it to them. Have then tape it on a folder.
-
You guys are on a roll!!! Q3 coming up in 2 minutes!
-
A2: level up on skills such collaboration, communication, focus and creativity
-
I did this as well with baseball card sleeves. Ss thought they were gold! Such a good idea https://t.co/cB6Zrls332
-
-
A2: I print out badges the size of baseball cards and laminate. Ss keep in baseball card sleeve. idea...works great!
-
Wow. Another week. Great to meet you at Spark, and also to see your actual face on your profile pic.
-
-
A1: I totally stole this idea from Starbuck. Ss earned rewards pts. that equaled pts toward badges https://t.co/2vzWOMQdUW
-
-
A1 Starbucks uses stars that you earn and collect as well.
-
A2: I used spendable skill points with this tree. Need to find a better way to track it next year. https://t.co/nEWNnWbko6
-
-
This is a great place to start! Just followed you. Glad you're here.
-
Great idea… I need to hear more.
-
A2: Powers make great currency for students to barter with
-
Gave Ss random "just because" points. Did 6 at end of day. Also attendance, just 4 being there. Helped many Ss buy in
-
Cool idea Luke… I bet your students love it. Gives a lot of choice for them.
-
A3: Our Ss earn tickets for good behavior & used to spend them on items from a cart - now used for a raffle. They also earn Dojo pts.
-
Bam! that is another great answer Alisha! You are on a roll. Ss love bartering and customizing in the game.
-
I've been struggling with the character sheets I've made, how do you guys keep your atk, def, and all manageable for kids?
-
A3 Grades, averages are not effective because they may not show growth and can discourage Ss https://t.co/Hq5zbFIlJ1
-
A2) Mileage club has always been successful in our school because students get a little plastic foot for every mile they run.
-
Sounds good… What would they do?
-
Schools have pts & grades but many of these are not engaging or motivating to ss Tangable and Interesting is much better and stoyline
-
A3: Points typically, but they don't translate well. The "how many do I need to get an A?" question proves their weakness.
-
Agreed. I've been working on ELA curriculum writing w/colleagues. My plans include kicking off in the fall.
-
I hope to add an ecosystem unit game, and may use food as currency, just a thought
-
Thanks for filling my bucket. I feel like the smart kid.
-
great idea and nicely tied to your theme of the lesson.
-
A3) A school naturally has "grades"/% but because they're earned differently for different subjects/projects= not effective long-term
-
I'm 6th ELA in middle school. I have the "babies" of the building. Sweet age...not quite teenagers yet.
-
A3.2: However, our tickets are not very effective because students get rewarded randomly (or not at all) after earning them.
-
Allow students to trade items with each other and allow them to trade with you from time to time.
-
-
Hope some of our & friends can join us for at 8CT as we reflect & share resources
-
Our school is a pbis school so we give out tickets. They can use them at a store or for the privilege of cutting the lunchline
-
Congrats on the new house Sandy! Happy to have you tweeting from your new home coming back to your old home at
-
A3: Dojo points, classroom cash, awards (for almost everything at elem), all could work well with games
-
Planning some awesome twists on Chopped and Amazing Race for ELA this year, thanks to you.
-
My cost change all the time… Helps keep it interesting.
-
So many amazing ideas! Q4 coming up in 2 minutes!
-
-
A3: At our school the kids have Wows for being a good citizen and gold card for good behavior
-
It's amazing how effective counting UP instead of down is.
-
I'm sure the kids are going to love playing it. Mine certainly do! (Even if they don't love my character sheets...)
-
I agree with I use physical pts for a very very long time before I think of going digital https://t.co/WwD1jhcifj
-
-
I am a big fan of physical. I do have digital “Gold” that is kept on my spreadsheet but the rest is physical.
-
A3(2): Also have "caught being good tickets", usually given to kids picking up trash, raffle to get prize
-
A3: increased autonomy can be earned. When Ss succeed at early parts of game/course, can help to design future parts of game/course
-
that's a good idea Then items that are more valuable at the time could be worth more. Do you tell ss this ahead of time?
-
Since my technology class is career based I'm thinking about using a classroom economy to "pay" Ss for their work/jobs.
-
Love the ideas coming from this chat.
-
Chopped is an awesome theme when you have students doing similar projects. Special ingredients are fun!
-
-
Totally agree, moved to SBG and Ss care even less, Ps don't understand system
-
Done this with students and used a credit card to access an online bank. Super successful! https://t.co/FXTvpyCmaV
-
-
Since my technology class is career based I'm thinking about using a classroom economy to "pay" Ss for their work/jobs.
-
I'm also going to be tying in your suggestion about certain items being tied to the character levels, thanks for that!
-
wow bast from the past! hen I was in 4th grade we had Wows and I loved them!
-
Thx,Michael.Couldn't have said it better. I've got all sorts of plans in the works. Plus, connected w/potential gamifying T.
-
Looks cool… I would love to chat with you about this sometime. You have lots to offer us all. Thanks for sharing!
-
in my "movie theater" themed game Ss could sell / trade things at the concession stand
-
May have to get more info from you on how you set that all up. =)
-
A4: I had personal currencies play into classwide currencies for an inter-period competition. That worked shockingly well.
-
Have them not only solve the problems, but find the problems. Can they contact business' & schools to gain insight?
-
-
A4: I start out small with one currency and Ss develop their own ways of managing currencies as we progress. Love to see this unfold.
-
We do 3 a week for upper and 3 for primary, some kids waited all year long and never got a reward
-
I have all sorts of ideas for what's in mystery baskets.Character traits for profiles?Fig language for poetry?
-
-
A4: I have a store and kids are a managers of the store and their accounts
-
Oh jeez! This is awesome! I would love to hear about your theater game! https://t.co/wFomQT1lyC
-
-
in my "movie theater" themed game Ss could sell / trade things at the concession stand
-
A4: Great question. Am here to learn!
-
I'm having staff at our school send in project ideas (jobs) for the students to complete w/ 3D printer & vinyl cutter.
-
yeah we arent to SBG just yet but I would like to move to that point! Im sure it will be a learning experience for all!
-
A4: To manage my currencies, I use a spreadsheet that has formulas for XP to convert to gold. Badges are physical stamps on paper.
-
-
A3: Grades, your grade level, reoccurring challenges like quiz, test, project, has rules. No, I don’t find them inspiring.
-
I have a store as well. Least motivated Ss were made managers. Turned around their entire year. https://t.co/HHYNpvqoIg
-
-
A4: I have a store and kids are a managers of the store and their accounts
-
I like the idea of the ss managing this! More responsibility for them and less for me to try to keep track of!
-
Yes..just like my Fitbit keeps me stepping along all day! Leaderboard and all!
-
No I rarely tell them game things like that… Want to keep it a secret.
-
I like the idea of getting Ss to choose, great buy in
-
This community is all sorts of AMAZING! You blow my mind each week! Q5 is coming in 2 minutes!
-
I think that would be great in your setting and one that would work naturally.
-
Love this idea, I might have to use this
-
Thanks! is a great community that will give you many actionable ideas.
-
A4) Level up on currencies: X number of bronze trade for silver; X number of silver trades for gold,etc;
-
it can do what ever you want it to. It can multiply a power for a day, give them extra powers, give them a privledge
-
-
It was kind of like one of those "ah ha moments" when it came to me. Just have to figure out logistics.
-
that makes sense. and if your 6th graders aren't melting down because of this then my 7th graders should be OK!
-
The only risk (which I ran into repeatedly) is that it led to many kids opting out.
-
A5) Scarcity can motivate Ss to try new quests; abundance can be used to help groups collaborate on obtaining game items
-
I did! What an adventure, but all worth it to meet you and so many others from
-
can each student have a character sheet they we in charge of. They add to it as they play the game? https://t.co/Xkad7OYFWm
-
I think this is good to keep in mind. As they are new to the game keep the game simple and light. Add complexities later.
-
A5: Scarcity/Abundance are great for problem solving and understand want vs. need.
-
don't give up on them. I think you can make them work!
-
I agree! This community is awesome! Each week I get so many new ideas and resources!
-
A5 I think it has to be scarce enough to make it valuable. Maybe not do it daily so kids don't tire or feel they can opt out
-
A5: Scarcity also led to a lot of side quests for additional points. Homework became very popular!
-
A5: By limiting gold to 1 gp per 10 XP, Ss must choose wisely This also makes bonus Quests with high XP (but no grade) more appealing
-
A5: Scarcity/abundance allow Ss to do some planning and strategic play. When to use items, what their value is on diff days
-
-
for sure! It was great to meet and chat with you and so many more of the community!
-
A huge take-away from the game sessions was: it doesn't have to be all planned out! Great a-ha!!
-
A4: made a spreadsheet that does in school really well. Find it here https://t.co/qCDsJtozod MEGA pack is the 1 to get
-
A5: Scarcity also adds to the allure of things. If only level 10s can do an assignment it makes everyone excited to do it.
-
A4: I want to use XP tied to their class work/quests & money tied to behavior (as I will still have to use Dojo next yr).
-
A5: As Ss adjust to game, we can alter levels of scarcity and abundance to keep game exciting and keep Ss on their toes.
-
It was fun to see you and work with you at
-
Time is flying! Q6 coming up!
-
A5 I think this can be a motivater if only the first Ss get something it can lead to better drive
-
I love this question Tisha! Great job leading us in this discussion. Congrats!
-
and they can create their own avatar!
-
I've used them as a type of currency for Ss to earn
-
nothing fancy either. Just a place in the room where players stick their items to sell / trade! https://t.co/xgt9OwLHcS
-
-
Made it, had a kickball game that went extra innings few
-
Very much so. Staff divided on whether they like it
-
Powerful thought about real world application of what our games can teach Ss that lecture just won’t get to. https://t.co/WAGV5dctS3
-
-
A5: Scarcity/Abundance are great for problem solving and understand want vs. need.
-
this is awesome and might be a game changer for later like a game update
-
Love the idea of adding "1 Available Only" on the top level items of my reward list like on kickstarter.
-
A6: Group challenges, this dynamic always leads to morale work. Also surprise tasks/challenges boost morale
-
A5: Scarce items earned in game would lead to great bartering skills!
-
A5: you definitely need balance, this where I struggled this year. I think limiting the items at first
-
-
A6: I made a pair of boots that forced the wearer to change Guilds, but they had to pay to learn that. One kids just put them on!
-
When we put Ss in the actual game, where they must make critical decisions in a timely fashion & risk consequences, Ss become engaged
-
awww thank you!!! It is just so fun to create it all and see the Ss LOVE it so!!!
-
A6: Student choice of assignments based on difficulty contributed to our overall game score. I set a target for them to "win."
-
A5: Ss want what there is less of, willing to "hoard" to get it, others want immediate reward, good lesson for life
-
we did with a two run inning☝
-
Great idea about kickstarter… Man that is a gold mine for us… Think about a crowd funded game site in class.
-
I should have picked one up !
-
A6) I think having items that help "unlock" clues or game quests are motivating for students.
-
Absolutely!! https://t.co/BmIrtAMZEs
-
-
When we put Ss in the actual game, where they must make critical decisions in a timely fashion & risk consequences, Ss become engaged
-
Revealing my entire item list at once was a HUGE mistake. Will certainly limit it next time.
-
agree! the more ss are working together to complete a mission/ challenge the better. I need to do this more in my game!
-
A6: When using , think beyond creative mode look at ex from Birmingham Plague & refuge crisis
-
A6: Choose your own adventure or group adventure, or leave it up to chance with a roll of the die
-
That sums up the powerful core of and it is my hope more people start to see this truth! https://t.co/v7PvbuKr5T
-
-
When we put Ss in the actual game, where they must make critical decisions in a timely fashion & risk consequences, Ss become engaged
-
that is awesome gonna work on that part of it Ss could back new items with gold early backers get for less
-
Agreed… I am totally geeking out right now about this idea!
-
Can't keep up with your level of awesome! Q7 coming up!
-
Just had this conversation w/ . We cannot assume all Ss are experts. Ts must plan well designed Lessons
-
agreed! I am about 30 tweets behind the chat right now… Crazy…
-
A6(2) I have a swift track (easy), a power track (hard), and an option to choose your own adventure as Ss explore the material.
-
-
First time ever, my endyear auction, Ss passing around their "cash" so their peers get what they want
-
A6 having tools to improve or change weak items is something I want to add to my game maybe even ways to help team or whole class
-
I love that idea, too. Thanks.
-
Oooh, like on Survivor when they bid on items under the basket - could be good, could be bad..? They never know.
-
I have one called tinkerer which lets you add a feature to an item you have. However, you can only do it once in awhile.
-
This sounds really awesome. What game platform/engine are you using? Do you have examples/resources to share?
-
At 1st, I was shocked and confused, then totally proud of them, not the class I thought would do it
-
A7 trading could be with the teacher, or Ss could trade amongst themselves.
-
Thanks for sharing this picture. It helps me visualize how this can work in my game.
-
Think an anvil or an enchantment table! Ss need to be at a certain "level" to do such skills.
-
A7 I like the point made in the xlap book about not trading in class, which creates probs during a challenge
-
ss could pool their points as well like for a review or group challenge
-
A7: I would love to incorporate opportunities for trade next year. You are all giving me great ideas!
-
Ss make right choices when Ts give opportunities like these as they is more akin to their world.
-
Great advice. Keep them guessing. Plus it gives you flexibility to change and adjust items.
-
A7 I think slowing trade teaches Ss life lessons about consequence you can’t get with out giving and you have to live with the choice
-
In game, have traded wood for stone or iron based upon what needed - win/win for players.
-
A7: really wanted trade to look like ancient trade: markets, bartering, traveling, actually creating this really stuck with them
-
A7: Excited to announce here first… putting the finishing touches on a trade system in my spreadsheet. Students can now trade gold.
-
Ahhh so much from the bit I have been here awesomeness
-
Final question coming in 2 minutes! This hour is the fastest of my week!
-
I like that. Adds to the risk factor, and could be big payoff or big loss. Go big or go home.
-
One way I have kids trade to different places is with a merchant ship item. Must load the ship, risk getting lost at sea
-
Trying to keep up so many great ideas
-
I am telling you the more we share on the better and better all of our games are going to be.
-
I am telling you the more we share on the better and better all of our games are going to be.
-
A7: So much of the initial game will have been created by me, I'd like to allow the students to create the trade rules & system.
-
Awesome news, ! This is a true game changer! https://t.co/AitLvlbh8y
-
-
A7: Excited to announce here first… putting the finishing touches on a trade system in my spreadsheet. Students can now trade gold.
-
Yes...collaboration, cooperation and community at its finest.
-
A7: Trade is a powerful tool, allows Ss to anticipate future needs of self & Peers. Let Ss implement own trading guidelines
-
One of my favorites! I have special die for sea adventures! Ss love to take the chance! https://t.co/OtQ10WpTTn
-
-
One way I have kids trade to different places is with a merchant ship item. Must load the ship, risk getting lost at sea
-
I am also a fiber artist and barter for real at our farmer's market. Trading/bartering allows Ss to see value without $$
-
-
so true this is my favorite pln
-
I agree. There are so many elements I want to include next year. I need to plan strategically for gradual implementation.
-
-
That is an important key to developing a good game.
-
Looks awesome. I will certainly read the prologue and all three chapters this week. Thanks!
-
A8: good to change as you go. Ss have the best input. I always welcome their thoughts and add ideas as the year progresses.
-
it’s hard want them all but know I can’t get it all in at once
-
Q8 - Can you introduce new currency when introducing a new setting? Going to a new planet with new currency?
-
A8 I think we can introduce as we go. Sometimes our Ss come up with great ideas we never thought of.
-
A8: I like to create a basic framework, but add twists & turns thru out game. Keeps game exciting and helps adapt to diff. learners.
-
differentiation is so important as you meet your Ss and understand their needs.
-
A8 you can add it makes the game more interesting but Need to be clear and fair
-
A8 I have 5 or 6 preps, so slowly gamifying each. I would add/change currency as I get aha moments as the game develops
-
A8: It is important for your game to not get stale… allowing room for new improvements and features is a hallmark of a good game.

-

A8: Most MMOs add currencies when players hit the "end game." Maybe make those extra currencies a reward for high performers?
-
-
I have a Divergent theme. Each faction could have own currency to trade/barter. When switch factions-new currency.
-
A8: Start off small, maybe one currency and then add to it as the year progresses
-
You will become a Jedi one day…
-
A8 Ss need to experience that change and adaptation is part of life
-
A8: Holding things back at the beginning I've found helps the Ss ease into the game so they don't panic. Also surprises are fun!
-
Yeah! Sometimes it is worth it big time, but sometimes "cue Price is Right whetwhee sound"
-
Also keeps Ss and Ts from being overwhelmed!
-
Super important for us Ts to know and recognize this reality. Thanks for reminding us of this one Luke. https://t.co/2Nl89HdpII
