#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Tonight we will be discussing screen time. We will be using research and guidelines from the USDOE Early Learning and Educational Technology Policy Brief. #FLedChat
Good evening y’all. Elyse checking in from Katy, Texas. I’ve had screen time on and off for instructional purposes but not much personal today. #FLedChat
A1: My answer is yes. My work requires me to be connected almost constantly but also gives me lots of opportunities to do a lot of #f2f work. #FLedChat
I think so. There's a huge difference between binge watching a series and using video to learn. Our brains process the two differently. (imho) #FLedChat
There's a lot of differing research on this, particularly for younger children. The USDOE Report compiled lots of research to come up with these guidelines. #FLedChat
I think it is about opportunity cost. Do Ss have meaningful experiences where they learn self-awareness, negotiation and the nuance of interpersonal relationships. #FLedChat
I believe we can promote good use of screen time for collaboration, creating, consuming, and entertainment. we need to teach Ss how to use tech for all aspects of learning and life #FLedChat
A2. I haven’t seen anything in print. That being said, I believe my district wants the screen time to be used for learning or demonstrating learning. #FLedChat
Because it is all about getting the tech used. After all, tech is going to make all the difference. The teacher has nothing to do with it. (Imagine Extreme Snarky Font). #FLedChat
A2 we focus on learning strategies and engagement (tech & Non-tech methods) what ever best serves the purpose from Google Drive to Kagan Structures #FLedChat
We also ask Ts to be mindful of how long Ss sit whether they sit in front of textbooks or a screen, find time for movement and opportunities to stand/stretch #FLedChat
Great point! The home school connection is an important consideration. We have to be aware of the explicit and implicit requirements for using devices in both settings. #fledchat
A3 I think recommendations can be recommended but every family has to choose what works for them. Same in ed. Don’t use tech for everything & it works for my Ss. #FLedChat
A3. I agree with it to a point. If I just let my Ss have a full 45 minutes on iPads, they will just play games. They won’t create a thing. They need guidance. #FLedChat
A4: encourage dialogue between the digital natives and the immigrants by putting forth challenges that ask for parent and student involvement. #Fledchat
Since I teach in a Title I school, here’s a thought: put together a family field trip to the zoo, museum, etc. take iPads. Come back and create using pics taken. #FLedChat#breakoutthecreditcardadmin
A4: We can't assume that everyone reads the reports. Just because people are born in the "digital age" doesn't mean they understand tech or appropriate usage. #FLedChat
Q5: The USDOE Early Learning and Educational Technology Report recommends that technology should not take the place of play time. How do you provide "unplugged" play time in your classroom? #FLedChat
A4 Create flexible personalized tasks for Ss & Ps to work together that are based on their interests...all assignments don't have to be the same #FLedChat
Q5: The USDOE Early Learning and Educational Technology Report recommends that technology should not take the place of play time. How do you provide "unplugged" play time in your classroom? #FLedChat
Q6: Screen time affects older students as well. What are some tools or strategies we can use to encourage secondary students to limit their screen time? #FLedChat
