Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.

  • fhillmanide Oct 11 @ 8:12 PM EDT
    Question 2 #LATICchat
  • cclark421 Oct 11 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1 UDLs provide a roadmap for ways to create meaningful experiences for all learners by engaging the whole brain through differentiation #LATICchat
  • nsulla - Moderator Oct 11 @ 8:12 PM EDT
A1) UDL always makes me think of the difference between designing C&I for the "able" and then having to retrofit it vs. designing with everyone in mind, allowing all access to a rich and rigorous curriculum. #LATICchat
  • cclark421 Oct 11 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2 the principles of UDL are similar to LATIC. Find ways to engage all learners to be self motivated and seek out informations. Grow the “soft” ed skills that help do the heaving lifting of the “hard” content standards #LATICchat
  • brandonlanger Oct 11 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1) Differentiation across all facets of Learning, Practice, and Application. UDL provides an “in” for every learner. #laticchat
    In reply to @fhillmanide
  • fhillmanide Oct 11 @ 8:15 PM EDT
    Hi Brandon! #LATICchat
  • ksuding Oct 11 @ 8:15 PM EDT
To push that even further, not only a roadmap but #UDL is like Google maps...the mindset allows u to quickly & automatically reroute ur planning based on current needs & barriers of ur Ss #LATICchat
    In reply to @cclark421
  • nsulla - Moderator Oct 11 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A2) UDL is about multiple means of engagement (LATIC PBL), representation (LATIC learning activities), and action and expression (LATIC structures and rubrics w/ student choice) #LATICchat
  • LouiLordNelson Oct 11 @ 8:16 PM EDT
A1 There's SO much in that statement! (1) Framework = guidance. (2) Improve & optimize = reminds/encourages instruct. homed in variability (3) teaching and learning = it affects the entire process for both learner and teacher. #udl #laticchat
  • nsulla - Moderator Oct 11 @ 8:17 PM EDT

A3 - for my students it is the necessary push on their executive function skills. These are so necessary for kids with learning and cognitive delays. They help with compensation for many differences. #LATICchat
  • CUrayIDE Oct 11 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3: A compelling real-world problem drives students to engage passionately with learning, and provides the fuel for effort and persistence. Students self-regulate because they care about making a difference in their world! #LATICchat
  • ksuding Oct 11 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3: it’s meaningful & relevant teaching that engages ur Ss. #LATICchat
  • LouiLordNelson Oct 11 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3: Man! Thousands of ways, but let's start with (1) lrnrs need to see themselves in/connect with the topic or skill, (2) lrns need supports to keep them connected with the skill/topic, (3) lrnrs need supports to help them keep track and move forward. #Laticchat #udl

A3) Allowing students choice & voice in problems. In @RandolphSchools two students felt the lunch options were not culturally representative of the students; they made their pitch to the Food Services Director and succeeded in changing the cafeteria offerings! #LATICchat
  • cclark421 Oct 11 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A3 I think that much of this happens in the structures. Activity lists provide choice and voice. The use of boards to build effort and persistence. I also am a big believer in developing ef skills as well #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 11 @ 8:25 PM EDT

@Carrilyn09, thanks for the invite to #LATICchat about #udl! Having a great time!
  • ksuding Oct 11 @ 8:27 PM EDT
So important. Executive functioning skills need modeled, taught & supported. Never assume ur Ss come into school with these skills & take time upfront to teach them. Lack of skills result in behaviors #LATICchat

A4) Literacy matters! In every subject and classroom. To ignore literacy in any subject is to say it is not valuable to learn #laticchat

TY @CUrayIDE I'm just beginning the journey along with my Ss. I think I and they love that idea. T as S. #LATICchat
  • LouiLordNelson Oct 11 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3: We have to also remember that MUCH if not MOST of engagement happens outside of tools and structures. It happens in the relationships we have with our learners. #LATICchat #udl

A4 I think a lot of this work is done in benchmarks, sgmls, how to sheets, videos, etc. These hints help define the what we are learning and set the stage for students to get to their individual path where they start to grapple with the info #LATICchat
  • ksuding Oct 11 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A4: By keeping accessibility in the forefront. Making sure Ss are receiving info how they learnt best. We come to where our Ss are & not forcing them to one way. Important to have appropriate accommodations. #LATICchat

  • mmartino1 Oct 11 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A4 - Over the years, I have tried to provide more freedom of expression with alternate assessments. Now LATI is a great structure to really support growth and development of skills, confidence, and risk taking for my Ss #LATICchat
  • CUrayIDE Oct 11 @ 8:33 PM EDT

Agreed 💯%. Every single TEST u give a Ss in any subject, before the Ss can get to content being tested, it’s 1st a test of engagement/accessible to them, THEN it’s a test of READING, then the content. ALL subjects. #LATICchat

A5) providing diversity in communication platforms is my first thought. Traditional direct instruction will draw the same 5 responders, but world cafe and other strategies make discussion accessible to others. #LATICchat

To help improve literacy skills...comprehension & decoding...make sure u use closed captioning on ALL videos. I think it’s one of the most underused accommodations in the classroom to improve literacy skills. #LATICchat #timespentreading

A5 - So new to my students but it is removing even their desire to just sit back and follow the T. Some of my most withdrawn kids ... years of learned helplessness ... are enjoying this experience and control. #LATICchat
  • ksuding Oct 11 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A5: Allowing students to verbalize what they know, create videos, draw...paper & pencil tests r not for all ads. If u truly want to know what ur Ss know, allow them to us tools that let them speak & share fluidly & not crushed by inaccessible barriers #LATICchat
  • fhillmanide Oct 11 @ 8:40 PM EDT
    Image time! #LATICchat

  • brandonlanger Oct 11 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A6) #laticchat the play button is everything. It will show you the world or connect you to art. The ability to capture and distribute knowledge via the internet has powerful implications for what humans can do. We need to teach media literacy to ensure it is not wasted #LATICchat

  • nsulla - Moderator Oct 11 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A7) "Varying the methods for response and navigation" -- how about a tool for helping teachers think outside the box on this rather than having all students engage and respond in similar ways? #LATICchat

  • Carrilyn09 Oct 11 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A7) "Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation" What about adding a growth mindset area/learning center/resource. When students need a pick-me-up they can read inspiring messages for their T, fellow Ss, family, and/or community members? #laticchat
  • CUrayIDE Oct 11 @ 8:56 PM EDT
A7 ‘facilitate personal coping skills and strategies’ - How about a graphic organizer that guides students to log their EF goals, strategies, and successes? #LATICchat
  • mmartino1 Oct 11 @ 8:56 PM EDT
A7 - multiple media & multiple tools for expression and communication. Multitasking becomes a complex task when you have learning or processing delays. So more opportunities to 'safely' take on synthesis #LATICchat
