Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
A1: In my experience, UDL provides powerful lenses to reflect upon individual student needs and differentiate to ensure each student is engaged and learning. #LATICchat
A1) UDL always makes me think of the difference between designing C&I for the "able" and then having to retrofit it vs. designing with everyone in mind, allowing all access to a rich and rigorous curriculum. #LATICchat
A2 the principles of UDL are similar to LATIC. Find ways to engage all learners to be self motivated and seek out informations. Grow the “soft” ed skills that help do the heaving lifting of the “hard” content standards #LATICchat
To push that even further, not only a roadmap but #UDL is like Google maps...the mindset allows u to quickly & automatically reroute ur planning based on current needs & barriers of ur Ss #LATICchat
A2) UDL is about multiple means of engagement (LATIC PBL), representation (LATIC learning activities), and action and expression (LATIC structures and rubrics w/ student choice) #LATICchat
A1 There's SO much in that statement! (1) Framework = guidance. (2) Improve & optimize = reminds/encourages instruct. homed in variability (3) teaching and learning = it affects the entire process for both learner and teacher. #udl#laticchat
A3 - for my students it is the necessary push on their executive function skills. These are so necessary for kids with learning and cognitive delays. They help with compensation for many differences.
#LATICchat
A3: A compelling real-world problem drives students to engage passionately with learning, and provides the fuel for effort and persistence. Students self-regulate because they care about making a difference in their world! #LATICchat
A3: Man! Thousands of ways, but let's start with (1) lrnrs need to see themselves in/connect with the topic or skill, (2) lrns need supports to keep them connected with the skill/topic, (3) lrnrs need supports to help them keep track and move forward. #Laticchat#udl
A3) Allowing students choice & voice in problems. In @RandolphSchools two students felt the lunch options were not culturally representative of the students; they made their pitch to the Food Services Director and succeeded in changing the cafeteria offerings! #LATICchat
A3 I think that much of this happens in the structures. Activity lists provide choice and voice. The use of boards to build effort and persistence. I also am a big believer in developing ef skills as well #LATICchat
So important. Executive functioning skills need modeled, taught & supported. Never assume ur Ss come into school with these skills & take time upfront to teach them. Lack of skills result in behaviors #LATICchat
yes ... the help board, task management board, and peer expert board in #LATIC support sustaining effort, persistence, and self-regulation ... Great Student Rubric, too! #LATICchathttps://t.co/sPUrxkZNBX
A3: We have to also remember that MUCH if not MOST of engagement happens outside of tools and structures. It happens in the relationships we have with our learners. #LATICchat#udl
A4 I think a lot of this work is done in benchmarks, sgmls, how to sheets, videos, etc. These hints help define the what we are learning and set the stage for students to get to their individual path where they start to grapple with the info #LATICchat
A4: By keeping accessibility in the forefront. Making sure Ss are receiving info how they learnt best. We come to where our Ss are & not forcing them to one way. Important to have appropriate accommodations. #LATICchat
A4: LATIC Ts provide students with varied learning choices that allow them to explore and construct understanding. Ongoing T facilitation and formative assessment ensures each student is getting what they need! #LATICchat
A4 - Over the years, I have tried to provide more freedom of expression with alternate assessments. Now LATI is a great structure to really support growth and development of skills, confidence, and risk taking for my Ss #LATICchat
Agreed 💯%. Every single TEST u give a Ss in any subject, before the Ss can get to content being tested, it’s 1st a test of engagement/accessible to them, THEN it’s a test of READING, then the content. ALL subjects. #LATICchat
A5) providing diversity in communication platforms is my first thought. Traditional direct instruction will draw the same 5 responders, but world cafe and other strategies make discussion accessible to others. #LATICchat
To help improve literacy skills...comprehension & decoding...make sure u use closed captioning on ALL videos. I think it’s one of the most underused accommodations in the classroom to improve literacy skills. #LATICchat#timespentreading
Signing off a little early. My daughter’s school is doing a one book challenge and we read together each night, I have to see what will happen next in the Lemonade War. Great topic tonight #LATICchat
A5 - So new to my students but it is removing even their desire to just sit back and follow the T. Some of my most withdrawn kids ... years of learned helplessness ... are enjoying this experience and control. #LATICchat
A5: Allowing students to verbalize what they know, create videos, draw...paper & pencil tests r not for all ads. If u truly want to know what ur Ss know, allow them to us tools that let them speak & share fluidly & not crushed by inaccessible barriers #LATICchat
Oh. I am in LOVE with the live captioning options in slides...and Microsoft has the capability in power point also. @Flipgrid does too! No excuses not to have them! #LATICchat
In reply to
@brandonlanger, @fhillmanide, @Flipgrid
A5) Teacher facilitation of goal setting and progress monitoring using the analytic rubric of the authentic learning unit as students work to apply learning in meaningful ways. #LATICchat
A6) I already posted my favorite image for UDL ... retrofitting vs Guggenheim. But how about this ... positioning students to change the world with all the colors they need! #LATICchat
A6) #laticchat the play button is everything. It will show you the world or connect you to art. The ability to capture and distribute knowledge via the internet has powerful implications for what humans can do. We need to teach media literacy to ensure it is not wasted #LATICchat
A7) "Varying the methods for response and navigation" -- how about a tool for helping teachers think outside the box on this rather than having all students engage and respond in similar ways? #LATICchat
A7) “foster Collaboration and community” the public is disengaged with education and believes it is failing. I refuse to allow this anymore and want my class to communicate learning to the community of teachers, parents, admin, and tax payers. #LATICchat
‘Facilitate personal coping skills and strategies’ - How about a graphic organizer where students log their EF goals, strategies, and growth? #LATICchat
A7) "Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation" What about adding a growth mindset area/learning center/resource. When students need a pick-me-up they can read inspiring messages for their T, fellow Ss, family, and/or community members? #laticchat
A7 ‘facilitate personal coping skills and strategies’ - How about a graphic organizer that guides students to log their EF goals, strategies, and successes? #LATICchat
A7 - multiple media & multiple tools for expression and communication. Multitasking becomes a complex task when you have learning or processing delays. So more opportunities to 'safely' take on synthesis #LATICchat
