Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
I am Jill from NC, Director Personalized Digital Learning and #21stedchat co-host. All of NC and SC are in my thoughts as #HurricanFlorence has caused so much damage from her path.
#21stedchat Hi my name is Alex Skolnick and im a Core II PrePracticum Student at Lesley University. Im a Junior Secondary Education/History Teacher. Im really exited to join a twitter Chat this is only my second time!
A1 Developing Mindfulness within students is not only one of the most important ways that classrooms and schools can raise student achievement scores but the skills also prepare students for life. #21stedchat
A1 Mindfulness addresses the whole child. We often address mental + physical but seldom the emotional. Our students go through a lot in the time they are away from us and we need be conscious of this as educators. #21stedchat
A1) The benefits of mindfulness being helpful in the classroom is making the classroom more diverse. They can be mindful of different student's culture and their learning styles. This would also help in schools when it comes to mindfulness programs #21stedchat
A1 The research on mindfulness in edu has grown in the last few yrs. The benefits has been shown to increase Ss sense of calm, decrease stress & anxiety, improve executive functioning skills, foster the development of conflict resolution skills & increase empathy #21stedchat
A1: Mindfulness in the classroom/school leads to thinking of others in terms of personal actions. Over time, students will start to transfer mindfulness into all aspects of their lives. #21stedchat
A1: Mindfulness is an important habit to imbed younger rather than later in the classroom because it allows the student to not only be aware of themselves but the students and staff in his surroundings.

A1: Mindfulness can help a student become focused on what we are teaching rather than focusing on the outside world. To focus on themselves.
Hello everyone. 4th and 5th grade teacher from Maine jumping into #21stedchat. Mindfulness is an essential component of #SEL curric. Developing the whole child, understanding of self, and empathy for others.
#21stedchat
A) The teacher could gain outside resources to gain knowledge of the practices such as mediation and create a time which students could learn to mediate.
A2 Mindfulness strategies need to be intentional part of a class. I use it as a reset button for my ss. I know we all deal w/ stress, here is a healthy way to cope. Builds strong relationships + ss return ready to work. #21stedchat
A2: Incorporating time for students to reflect whether through dialogue to written expression will add to students' mindfulness. Maybe even help others with examples for the ones who struggles with it. #21stedchat
A2: Ts can help encourage mindfulness in the classroom by giving Ss the time to refocus if needed, refocus on the learning and tasks at hand #21stedchat
A2 My spanish teacher in high school allowed us to have a 5 min guided meditation as a way to relax after lunch. It helped a lot, getting students focused on the class at hand/ready to learn #21stedchat
A2. In my opinion one of the best ways to add mindfulness strategies is playing relaxing music while students are taking exams. I feel like this helps calm the student down if they feel stressed out and it might even help their thought process. #21stedchat
A2) spending a few moments at the beginning of classes to allow students to take deep breaths and focus on their thoughts (geared towards middle & high school students due to stress of switching classes) #21stedchat
A2 As an elem edu I am fortunate enough to have a daily morning meeting. We use this time to share strategies, practice skills, and develop understanding of how our minds and bodies work. Blue tones, deep breathing, movement, journaling, etc all come into play. #21stedchat
A2: You can incorporate mindfulness into your lesson plans, you can have a culture appreciation day and talk about different cultures in history. You can use current events (depending on the age of the students) to enlighten them on issues in the current world. #21stedchat
Hey #21stedchat! Louie checking in from Philly. 5th grade teacher new to the district. It's been a while since I've been here but the start of the year has been crazy and I'm looking to fill the bucket with some Twitter PLN time!
A1. Mindfulness in the classroom is a good way for the students better manage their emotions, improve their attention, and greatly reduce their anxiety and stress #21stedchat
Q3. How would mindfulness support other programs already in place at our school (SEL, anti-bullying, conflict resolution, Zones of Regulation, etc.)? #21stedchat
I really like your idea. Having cultural awareness present in your classroom will help students grow as a person and help in their everyday life #21stedchat
Ordered this book over the summer and finally getting ready to jump into it this week. Goes great with this discussion on mindfulness. Anyone else read it?? #21stedchat
This is a great idea, although I know some students get distracted by music, even if intended to be calming. A teacher could possibly check to make sure it is okay with their students before doing so? #21stedchat
A3: I love the idea of mindfulness being away to encourage conflict resolution. I love to teach perspective. What was that person's point of view? #21stedchat
A3 Mindfulness in class helps relieve stress. Stress causes conflict between ss. Developing peaceful moments to help a ss self manage emotions can only help. #21stedchat
A2. Teach the students breathing techniques to calm them down and get back to learning. Breathe in through the nose and count to five in your head slowly, then release through the mouth. Do this as many times as needed until you have calmed yourself down #21stedchat
A3) if students are learning about and recognizing their feelings, and are being given outlets for their emotions, they might not be so quick to take their frustrations or anger out by bullying their peers. #21stedchat
A3 Being more aware of yourslef and other people will only help suport other programs. If you understand yourself you can understand other people. Also the tools like meditation/journaling etc.. can help open difficult convo #21stedchat
A3. Mindfulness can be a big part of anti-bullying. Having students learn about different cultures help them realize everyone is different which makes them that much more similar to each other. It will help students become closer to their classmates. #21stedchat
A1. Mindfulness is important in today's society which seems to always be rushing. It's important to have student's reflect on the current moment. I think its a great trait that will definitely benefit them in many aspects of life, not just the classroom. #21stedchat
That's a great way to add mindfulness in the classroom. This year we have a new class in the middle school I work at called wellness. It is right after lunch and allows the students to do different activities. Anything from yoga to coloring to games. #21stedchat
Hi everyone! My name is Brigid. I am a sophomore at Indiana University studying English education! I am excited to read your thoughts about mindfulness in the classroom! #21stedchat
I love the idea of a wellness class, but it makes me wonder if we're not just reaching the students who already "buy in". How can we reach those who don't automatically want to be mindful? #21stedchat
A4: You can incorporate the stress relief coloring pages, relaxing classical music while they work, and their are other websites for reference you can use like https://t.co/IdabesnUr1#21stedchat
A4. There are great mediation videos on Youtube you can play at the end of class. There are also great quotes about mindfulness on google that can help students reflect on their own lives. #21stedchat
A4) Upon a quick Google search of resources for mindfulness in the classroom, I found an array of books, websites, videos, and films. It seems that there are many options and ways to make implementing mindfulness into your classroom effortless. #21stedchat
As teachers, like coaches, we need to be aware of the climate of our classrooms. Sometimes have to step back or even ask how our ss are doing. Stopping + doing a brain boost or minfulness activity can help all of us. #21stedchat
A4 Ask your #healthed tr at your school. We etach about stress and coping strategies. Often we teach and have ss pply these strategies. Work together to help all ss. #21stedchat
With a LOT of practice! I remind myself to take deep breaths throughout the day, YOGA is one of my favorite things to do, and just reminding myself to take in the present moment. #21stedchat
A5 Start every morning reading Bible and praying. Incorporate regular workouts that include long walks. Sometimes a 10-15 nap will do the trick. #21stedchat
A5) I sometimes find it difficult, but I set time aside to relax and think about my day and my feelings. If I’m feeling upset or stressed, I try to think about why I feel this way and what I can do to change it. #21stedchat
I enjoy setting aside time to read, listen to music, or just sit outside. No matter how much work I have, I always set aside at least 15 minutes for this. #21stedchat
This is VERY important, and something I forget to do or believe I don’t have time to do quite often. It is very easy to get caught up in responsibilities and forget to care about yourself. #21stedchat
A5 I have to intentionally make myself aware of being truly present with my students instead of focused on all the things that need doing. At the end of the day, I always take time to decompress and reflect. #21stedchat
A6. One take-away from tonight is the realization that students and even adults need to learn to be more mindful. It will help in making a better world. Teaching students mindfulness at a young age will better the future #21stedchat
Always reflect on what you are doing and why you are doing it. As a student pursuing my degree in education, I often have to remind myself of my end goals and purpose! #21stedchat
A6) One take away from tonight’s chat is that mindfulness is not only a very beneficial thing to incorporate in classrooms, but also something teachers should be sure to include in their daily life as well. “Practice what you preach”, if you will. #21stedchat
A4. After searching for mindfulness resources in the classroom, I came across many books and videos, as well as guided practices that can be easily done. I'm going to most definitely look for books I can read along with my kids. #21stedchat
Thanks #21stedchat for a great first chat! I'm excited to take what I learned about #mindfulness into my future classroom some day! Have a good evening, everyone!
