Hi all, Greetings from Cbus. My favorite memory from this year was the teacher who had enough strength to say to me "can you help me do this better" Looking forward to learning wiht you all #ohedchat
#ohedchat Simon Sci T from NE OH, the start of school best memory is always the freshman orientation day with all the new students and LinkCrew leaders helping them (I am a co-mod for LinkCrew)
#ohedchat Mike Triska from NORT2H, best memory/experience, getting to experiment with @CHSRaiders large format printer. I'm still creating in Illustrator every night. I'm addicted!
#ohedchat Hey there. Jeff from Lancaster High. Best memory from the start of school? Just yesterday! We cut the ribbon on our (nearly complete) Engineering Pathway!
Alyse, 6-12 principal, my favorite memory already is all school mass where K and seniors are paired up as the incoming & outgoing stars of our school. Oh and watching the seniors try to manage the kindergartners during their first school mass #ohedchat
#Ohedchat Dave Miller here. Favorite memory this year has been helping schools explore maker for their classroom and media centers. I'm addicted to 3D printing.
A1.) I believe personalized learning is creating the little adjustments in lessons to make it work for all S's. Lesson plans can be used year to year to year, but no two classes are the same. #ohedchat
Jill from Cincinnati 5thgraepde ELA and SS. Favorite memory so far this year is when a student says “I finished my book last night. I could not stop reading it.” #ohedchat
A1: Personalized learning is allowing the students to explore the content at their own pace, including letting them struggle with understanding. It means a lot more when students "get it" on their own instead of just being told the right answer. #ohedchat
Personalized learning- teachers creating lesson plans for students with a variety of learning styles. Getting to know each students best personal learning style and incorporating use of those different styles in the classroom. Requires more "intimate" instruction #ohedchat
#ohedchat to me personalized learning is individ. down to the Ss. Personalized learning provides EACH Ss with the instruction they need. This can include choice in types of assignments/assessments and/or content topics - like a project on how 1 charac of life impacts humans
Robin - IL, LRC TA, starting the school year with a brand newly painted LRC!!! New configuration for a better use of the space. Everything like new to welcome the students. #ohedchat
With so many definitions of Personalized Learning, it's hard to keep things straight. @iste has a great take on PL, IL, & differentiated at https://t.co/sKp6AWASUP#ohedchat
We used #TLAP as a book study last year, so they worked with the different hooks. We are 1:1 so they can use tech easily as well. This year's book study is Learning Transformed, so working on increasing rigor with technology too. #ohedchat
Super intimidating to start with EVERY student. As an admin, I encourage baby steps to look at student needs in groups and start there. I love the gusto though! #ohedchat
A1: personalized learning is being given the freedom to choose what you feel is best for your personal development within your career...but it’s also good to gain other perspectives into your personalized learning. #ohedchat
A2: I have seen flexible seating and small group discussions as a use of personalized instruction. FS allows students to pick and choose where they feel most comfortable & are able to focus/learn better. Small group provides more intimate instruction, more understanding #ohedchat
#ohedchat A2: student agency in projects for medium to deliver. I haven't been able to create the kind of flexible spaces I would like. I have been attempting to create assignments and groupings of students to better assist students.
We use SAMR as the tech framework and DOK for rigor. Also I push Tony Wagner's 7 survival skills as the basis for all lessons. The more skills a lesson hits the better. #ohedchat
In a past field, I utilized personal learning by having students do a quick wide range of math problems to determine where they needed the most help, and went from there. I used their strengths to build their weaknesses into strengths #ohedchat#ysuedu
A2: sharing personal experiences and sruggles...personalized learning is about gaining strategies that can be implemented and support your Ss is the most effective way. #ohedchat
A2: As a science teacher, I love using anything and everything that's inquiry based. @POGILproject, @PhETsims, @ExploreLearning, etc are all great ways for students to explore the content in a personal way so true higher-order connections can be made. #ohedchat
A2.2: it also helps to have knowledge of your students’ interests...make connections to where your Ss are to personalize the experience of learning for them. #ohedchat
A2: strong preassessment(s) that truly gauge learners where they are at. Also, scaffolding that let's students enter where they are at, which hits differentiation.
#ohedchat
One of my favorite strategies for Q2 is developing personalized playlists for Ss. Here is a nice resource with links to real examples. #ohedchathttps://t.co/K79vQIDgAq
"personalized" is so intimidating when we think a lesson for every student. Chunking students IS personalized AND attainable for all teachers! #ohedchat
A2: student choice for authentic assessments - I have seen our @DVD_engineers students take the lead on numerous projects that represent their unique ideas and skills #OHedchat
Great point. Have you checked out @STARTSOLE? It's a great strategy to uncover interests & knowledge students have related to essential questions on just about any topic. #ohedchat
A2.2: it also helps to have knowledge of your students’ interests...make connections to where your Ss are to personalize the experience of learning for them. #ohedchat
A3 I don't have my own class room yet, but I would say that the answer varies based on the material being taught and the students in the class. Some classes will be more diverse than others and require more differentiation #ohedchat
#ohedchat A3: student choice in the way they show their learning. I like assignments about a topic where Ss can create something lasting (music video/animated video/sketch, etc.)
A3: first, figure out students varying learning styles. Plan variety of lesson plans... open ended, hands on, modeling and support, groupwork, visuals etc. Perform different styles every day, give students a choice here and there. Make learning INTERESTING! #ohedchat
A3: inherent to personalized learning should be increased face-time and individual conversations with the teacher - this allows for natural differentiation as the teacher can steer the conversation and tailor the instruction for each student #OHedchat
A3: create different entry points. Allow students to progress at their own pace. The way you use questioning to further one's depth of knowledge. Build in enrichment opportunities.
#ohedchat
A3: provide options for Ss...read aloud...let Ss listen to audiobooks...peer tutoring...ask Ss what they need to succeed. Let Ss have input into their learning. #ohedchat
A3 From allowing a group for support, to choosing the genre & lexile of a novel for book groups to using @Newsela to differentiate reading levels for nonfiction articles, there are hundreds of ways to meet individual needs. It is just the way we should teach every Ss #ohedchat
A3: I think student choice must play a large part. For example, in November my BioMed 11's will go to a genetics conference. When we return, they will choose 1 topic they heard about, then create a research poster & present it to our biomedical advisory board #ohedchat
A3) product; process; content
Product. Everyone learns the same stuff the same way & shows what they know differently.
Process. Everyone learns same stuff but in a different way.
Content. Everyone learns different stuff but same skills OR different levels of stuff.
#ohedchat
I love this because it's real world! I am sending three teachers to OMLA and they will have to present to the rest of the staff when they return. #ohedchat
I think depending on lesson, combination may be used. Some curriculum is guaranteed. You can't change the content. Sometimes you have to learn by reading. Sometimes you have to write. But in combination we can come up with SOMETHING for EVERYONE. #ohedchat
I LOL because I spent 3 years at an ESC doing teacher PD, so I run a lot of it still for my staff instead of hiring outside. They can't escape me #ohedchat
A4 Grading should be more about students showing that they understand the concepts rather than every student coming to the same answer verbatim #ohedchat

A4: Ts May need to reduce the number of problems to check...maybe Ts look at the process as the goal while others are being checked on the full problem. It’s about having Ss succeed for where they’re at and getting them to the next step. #ohedchat
A4: I believe in mostly summative assessing. Grading on assessment is tricky, you don't necessarily get accurate results of learning. There should be a uniform way to grade, but leave it up to the child to show their skills through their work. Ex: essays, short answer #ohedchat
A4: Students should be graded on understanding the content and also on effort. I prefer to have a student who shows up everyday, works his tail off, and gets a C+. He may not have the top grade based on summative assessment, but he will have a deep understanding #ohedchat
A4) Grades should reflect mastery of content.
Not how you got there.
Not how many times it took you to get there.
Not if you turned it in late or on time.
Not if you participated out loud.
#ohedchat
#ohedchat A4 cont.: Summative assessments do not have to be tests with M.C. fill the blank/ short answer/essay/graphic interp (they can be and may need to be for EoCs) but as often as possible allow them to summatively asses through their own project in their own media

#ohedchat thanks! I am fortunate I have a nice classroom, just need to figure out how to use the space wisely with the tables and chairs I have (they are chem approved and heavy)
Rubrics have taken me a long time to get on board. Need to have a minimum for the A and an area to stretch. I hated thinking there was no way to be credited for "above and beyond" or creativity. Good rubrics and bad rubrics make a big difference #ohedchat
A5 Tech can support all learning. Using tech properly can be a great scaffold for any subject area. Different programs can provide different perspectives for students to see material in a way that chalkboards do not allow #ohedchat
With AI growing so quickly, I think we will see programs that assist us in assessing and personalizing learning for students. This will never be a substitute for good teachers and good instruction. #ohedchat
A5: Ss can collaborate between classes and share resources easily. Ss. An extend learning beyond the classroom and create in different ways. Technology needs to enhance learning and not be the entire process. #ohedchat
A5: One of my favorite things right now to do is to have students create their own Pear Decks .. they pick the topic, they create the questions and interactions to teach their peers... #ohedchat
A5: technology should always be used as a tool for instruction. Students can explore their own ways of learning through devices, there are many different ways to learn. Ex: math games, flash card apps, reading/writing games, or no games at all. #ohedchat
A5: Like with anything else, technology is a tool. We just can't throw it at students and expect it to work miracles. Instead, tech should be integrated into an overall classroom culture of growth and "failing forward" #ohedchat
#ohedchat A5: tech can support personalized learning through the formative assesment feedback, providing Ss agency in HOW they show their learning, the AI mentioned, and power of PLNs in providing new resources

No matter which edtech tool or tech enhanced strategy you pick for Q5, use tech integration models like #SAMR as a guide to add value to your lesson. #ohedchat
A5) Tech can be the hook.
Tech can be the product.
Tech can be the process.
Tech is a tool that must be used properly. It's not the silver bullet.
#ohedchat
#OHEDCHAT have heard of Pear Decks, used one briefly in the PD class I took, but have not moved into it much. Our Ss love Kahoot and Quizlet (some Ts even love Quizlet LIVE).
A6 A program that offers different levels of problems that require thinking toward a common goal world work well for digitized personalized learning. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A6: LEARNING would look different, but still occur. deep sustained acquisition of knowledge that can utilized in novel situations. we are trying to prepare Ss for problems that don't exist yet - help them be nimble critical thinkers
A6: In a digitized personalized learning community, all students have a voice. Such as the three freshmen that I've been talking through homework problems on @RemindHQ during this chat tonight! 😂 #ohedchat
A6: with digital learning comes different ways of showing the learning even tho it is still happening. Overall there will still be a goal to achieve and content to understand. #ohedchat
A6) digitized doesn't automatically mean better. It certainly makes things more efficient. So I will say, increased rate of feedback would be a great positive of digitized personalized learning.
