Hello everyone in #NGSSChat land! Happy New Year! Ted Willard here, NSTA's resident standards geek and educational cartographer.
It feels like we haven't been together since all the way back in 2017.
I'm Brianna - HS Bio teacher joining from NJ. It's been a while since I've joined, but tomorrow's snow day made it easier to stay up this late =) #NGSSchat
A1: oooh...good one! My #NGSS goal this year is to help support teachers in understanding climate science aspects of the NGSS and provide classroom supports – I’m working with a great conference committee to plan a climate summit as part of #CAScience18#NGSSChat#CANGSS
A1: My "relationship" with #NGSS is always changing, and so are my goals - as of right now, my 2018 goal is to continue storylining my new curriculum as I'm working through my first year teaching HS Biology! #NGSSchat
A1: To learn about and develop 3D Assessments by joining in the @snapgse online PD and learning from Helen Quinn this week at our @VenturaCOE NGSS Leadership Network #ngsschat
Angie from NE. I am rewriting my climate change unit to better fit personalized learning. I’m thinking different phenomena will be one method of personalization. #NGSSchat
A1: When editing our curriculum, we will make ELA/Math connections more explicit for teachers, and consider what progressions of targeted SEPs and CCCs look like K-5. I'll be using what I've learned as an EQuIP panel member! #ngsschat
A1 it is tough to narrow down ngss goals. I guess I would like a clearer vision in my head about what I want to accomplish in my transition to an ngss classroom #ngsschat
That has been the excitement of the journey for me-- I am 5 years in and still have that as a goal-- so much excitement around the learning and trying out new ideas! #NGSSchat

First step is a new "Making Sense of Three-Dimensional Teaching and Learning" workshop that @TdiShelton and I will be premiering at the NSTA Conference in Atlanta. #NGSSChat

As I understood the relationship I saw where my teaching was already 3D, and where I had to grow in 3D implementation I have changed a lot over the past 2 yrs as I've really dug into 3Ds #ngsschat
A2: Focus on those cross-cutting concepts and do not be afraid to embrace the power of engineering! The #NGSS standards might feel overwhelming at first, but they open so many doors for our kids! #NGSSchat
Jumping in late! Had to get through the airport in Taiwan. I'm Jenny from Vista, CA, @CasitaMagnet#STEM Specialist and @cascience Primary Director. Glad to join in with #NGSSChat.
A2: Lesson Screener Tool from @AchieveInc is a great place to start. I LOVE the tables that show "NGSS lessons look less like / more like" as an introduction to the shifts! #NGSSchat
A2: Choose one practice you are willing to start embedding into instruction–try it out, see how it feels, experiment with centering it in your instruction to help engage students in sense-making. Many of our @earlyimplement teachers started with developing&using models #NGSSChat
A2: This tweet will forever be my go-to for this question, haha! With the addition of NGSS@NSTA, @Ted_NSTA ! :) #ngsschat I do suggest beginning with the framework.
A2 Don't rush it! Take your time learning how #DCI#SEP & #CCC interact The standards are a work of sci art, take the time to appreciate each dimension #ngsschat
I suggest selecting one of the three "sense-making" practices
Developing and Using Models
Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
Engaging in Argument from Evidence
#NGSSChat
A2 Startingwith the practices especially ones that Teachers are familiar. Helping colleagues understand that the students need to do the science #NGSSchat
I think you can also use the bullet point descriptors from Appendix F of the Framework to really dive deep into what that practice means. The NSTA book Helping Students Make Sense of the World Using the SEPs will really help, too. #ngsschat
A1: 2018 goals are to spread the love of #NGSS in the elementary realm and to encourage teachers to use phenomena to anchor units. I'm excited to start my learning with @EarlyImplement at the January #CANGSS Institute. #NGSSchat
Thank you so much, Jeanne. I have been in this chat for quite some time, feeling like an imposter the whole time. Your resources will help me! #NGSSChat

A1: Hi from CT! I'm excited to join tonight with a later bedtime (snow day tomorrow) My goal is to, like Kathy, is to work on generating 3-D assessments. I found "Seeing Student Learn Science" and the Stanford NGSS assessment projects to be very helpful. #NGSSchat

This is still so new- we really are all learning as we go! That's been my biggest takeaway from the past year. And that is really in the spirit of NGSS if you think about it. If we could Google the answer, it wouldn't be worth asking the question. :) #ngsschat
I'm w/@richbacolor w/CCCs but I had to grow to get there As I look back on my growth in #NGSS it began w/SEPs & matured into CCCs driving thought #ngsschat

Not that we should take the easy route, but I think many teachers are more comfortable with the practices than the CCCs; SEPs are an easier place to start if there's concern over how much of a shift there is to make. #NGSSchat

Yes. Here is a link to one I gave a few weeks ago. https://t.co/9CowsLmDMV The video is from the Stanford NGSS assessment project. We are a standards-based school, so with feedback, students had the opportunity to go back and revise. #NGSSchat
A3: I have developed several NGSS units but they only make sense to me. Goal is to write up teacher notes so that I can share with other teachers. #NGSSChat
A3 Looking at having an end of the year proj that incorporates my 1 physics & 3 earth sci units There are so many strands to connect I know it is very possible for my Ss to accomplish #ngsschat
A1: 2018 is about depth and spreading the power of #NGSS! I hope to help teachers utilize phenomena to anchor transdisciplinary units of inquiry and also advocate for #GirlsinSTEM. #NGSSChat

A3: Our team dreams of creating a regional network of teachers who use our curriculum, so that we can foster teacher leadership and encourage the sharing of best NGSS practices. #ngsschat
A3: My biggest #NGSS project this year is finishing my masters thesis on the incorporation of NOS in the 3D classroom through the use of explicit reflection on the NOS understandings in Appendix H #NGSSchat
A3: Looking at ESS4 and found a connection to our state’s 3-4 grade SS geography standards. Would love to find more K5 crosswalks like that. #NGSSChat#2birds
This will continue to be a struggle until they authentically understand three-dimensionality and even then, it's a big thing to tackle. The references to @snapgse is a good starting place #NGSSChat

Our hort students design landscapes for several community projects, and then we go and execute them, it’s amazing work NGSS aligned authentic and engaging #ngsschat
A3: I would love to work on how to blend in #CS and #NGSS. There are so many opportunities and I would love to help develop/curate resources to help teachers see the potential it could offer our students to be #futureready. #NGSSChat

Q4: Advanced goal setting described in a Huff post article has 3 levels of intensity as described below-- choose a level and create a matching #NGSS goal. #NGSSchat
Agreed! The more attention I'm giving to Nature of Science, the more opportunities I see to address it in instruction. I should (hopefully) have all my data compiled by July! #NGSSchat
A3 I would like to help my grade 4 Teachers to integrate their earth science with their natural resources, social studies Starting with Grand Canyon new OSTB and one teacher #NGSSchat
I second this! Look into @RightQuestion institute for great questioning strategies after the phenomena Students will be so engaged they will want to figure it out #NGSSchat

A4: I need to form the habit of constant, EXPLICIT, reference back to the anchoring phenomenon. It's easy for me to see the pieces students are building, but I need to make sure they see it too! #NGSSchat

A2: The NGSX training was so helpful for me to see how to implement NGSS-style curriculum and routines (summary charts, Gotta Have Its, etc) into my classroom. #NGSSchat
Hey #NGSSchat If you didn't know, @storify is shutting down over the next few months. Keeps your eyes open for an aesthetically pleasing archiving tool to take its place.

A4: Bring on the #NGSS 'challenging' level. I need and want to focus on shifting my mindset to coaching and provide feedback to teachers on how to get depth with #NGSS. I love implementing #CANGSS and with coaching, I hope to focus on scale without losing quality. #NGSSChat
Q4: Advanced goal setting described in a Huff post article has 3 levels of intensity as described below-- choose a level and create a matching #NGSS goal. #NGSSchat
A5 Biggest first step: confidence Resources: My Ss feedback & my science #PLN
The more I listen to my Ss & talk #NGSS the better I see the 3Ds #ngsschat
A4: Challenging- focus and provide more support for my ILC teams who are implementing NGSS in their districts. I need to check in with them more often to see what progress they’ve made with their projects. #ngsschat

I have to remind students all the time that they are not just allowed, but expected to retry and resubmit, the grade is such a comfort for them, like oh well it's too late #NGSSchat
So, my goal is to get into the habit at the end of every lesson of having students reflect on their learning, and how it relates back to the anchoring phenomenon - The big thing we're trying to figure out! (2/2) #NGSSchat
Final Answer: For the atlas, I want to:
1.Get completed maps out for review
2. Complete first drafts of individual maps for remaining chapters
3. Lots of work on refining connections between maps

I found your storylines site this fall and I LOVE it. I've been using resources from "Why Don't Antibiotics Work Like They Used To" as inspiration for some work in one of my science teaching courses. Very inspiring! #ngsschat
Thanks Kristin. Very happy to know that you and others find it useful.
I hope to have a book you like even more completed and published this year.
