Schools are most productive when when the phrase "my students" becomes "our students".
… want more teacher leadership … listen to their voice …
Hi Tom, I think a first step is good communication. Be as transparent as possible about initiatives, efforts, goals.
Joining from VA this evening.
Some schools (all indep?) are actually "teacher led." Decisions about curric/pedagogy are made by faculty, not admins.
GREAT topic HOW can we embrace greater teacher leadership to STRENGTHEN
10 traits of teachers who teach for conceptual understanding when using the USI probes & FACTs https://t.co/xJM4pBjM4K
Hi Mark, I think it's essential for schools to look at their models of decision making, communication too.
Our pleasure, :) RT : Thank you for sharing our guide!
In 30 mins will begin; focusing on Ch 3 & 4 of book Learn Like a Pirate; join the discussion
Now Topic: In what ways can schools embrace greater teacher leadership to strengthen what we can do to teach well?
Is it Spring yet? Join us tomorrow at 4pm PST/7pm EST for a you won't want to miss! Moderated by the lovely :)
Teachers at our school go to other classrooms to observe what is working. We meet as teams weekly if not more.
A1: First leaders must make an effort to allow teachers to observe each other teaching
Transparency is a hard sell to many Admins. It requires exposing themselves to more scrutiny than they are used to.
I have to wonder how many teachers actually want to lead vs just teach (there’s nothing wrong with that either)
Join Topic: In what ways can schools embrace greater teacher leadership to strengthen what we can do to teach well?
Schools can (and should) allow for more time for teachers to learn from other teachers, both in and out of district.
To be honest, with all the 'extras' that admin are having to do teachers need to take leadership roles.
Teachers share with staff each time they come back from a training, conference, or PD.
Through communication and community support. Share, involve, collaborate w all investors
The leaders have to let teachers be leaders too
I would love to observe other teachers! Giving teachers responsibility in decision making
building a community of trust, not to micromanage, invest time to create essential agreements and common goals
A1: If you want teacher leaders, offer time for professional development within the school day or paid time outside of the day.
Tapping into tchr expertise to share collegially helps build leadership capacity.
Perhaps they could start small with a weekly memo that outlines main initiatives, efforts, questions--invite response.
Professional development is HUGE!! Allow them to explore new topics
Starting reading workshop unit on nonfiction text, any advice?
Also, teachers spend more time with the students and get to know them better. We should be able to find and implement pd that has
Want teacher leaders … get out of the way … stop saying no … you might learn something.
I think ideas from lesson study, shadowing, mentoring, coaching can be integrated
Definitely Frank. I think that moving towards greater team will result in greater share.
a great impact on students because of that. We should be leading the way with stuff like that.
I'm also a big fan of "spreading the good news" in authentic, truthful ways.
A1. The model is also a good way to spark leadership in teachers who might not otherwise step up in a more formal setting.
"To be an intellectual really means to speak a truth that allows suffering to speak."
--Cornel West
do have freedom to speak mind? Try new things? Take risks? And then share what works?
Involve tchr-ldrs in meaningful decision-making instead of only as conduits of information.
Well Dennis... that might depend on what the meaning of "lead" is...
The number one way teachers say they learn best is to watch other teachers teach
I shy away from a leadership position typically, but age and experience makes it much easier to kind of embrace now.
Leaders don’t need to be trained … they just need an opportunity.
ASSERT TEACHER leadership — share expertise, resources and support.
NOW UNDERWAY Topic: In what ways can schools embrace greater teacher leadership to strengthen what we can do to teach well?
So Frank... let's rock tonight!
Signing on to . Journalism Educator in certification program in Haslett, Michigan!
Yes... start there Niko, and grow forward
some do, for example I have a lot of leeway. Some don't and it is pretty awful for them :(
I love this Nancy. So many T's want to participate, lead in ways--this makes for greater team.
Trust will need to begin by someone taking the initiative. If the Admin is truly a leaders,she/he should use that to lead.
...I think students need to learn to shut off. They are always way too connected and need to wind down
Really making the time to build team, communicate, share in decision making is essential.
the opportunity/position to lead or have voice heard. Some are ok just teaching.
I spend time teaching students how to relieve stress
School leaders have to trust teachers to be leaders.
School leaders have to trust teachers to be leaders.
Also we all have to rethink our attitudes w/regard to roles, hierarchy, power, voice.
A1. Stop presenting things as choices, if they are not actually choices. Allow teachers to be decision-makers in areas that matter.
A1 Appreciation & opportunities to make suggestions & changes trum stipends for teachers. Teachers should be paid more for day job.
So important yet so often undervalued & not built into the sch day. https://t.co/10i5tzMgx5
Schools can (and should) allow for more time for teachers to learn from other teachers, both in and out of district.
Not everyone can lead at the same time … at some point you have to be part of the team.
i have a prob with career path that's available to teachers. Why in the world must a good teacher leave classroom?
T's can look elsewhere too. I'm currently involved in Teacher lead. program - terrific.
Teacher leadership should be driven by trust of students and desire to communicate with them to shape our teaching.
It would be a gift to have observation time built into each quarter on a rotating basis.
Good point. When will we have differentiated PD?
stodgy old slow academia is my perception. Can't iterate if inundated treading water
Trust and create open paths--paths that are equitable and leave no groups out.
Imagine school LED BY THESE TEACHERS
I'm looking for recommendations for reading curriculum for k-5 and 6-8. What do you like, what do you hate.
Absolutely. And for some of us, that's hard to do - to step back!
Many forms of leadership. A GOOD TEACHER should be paid as much as a good suit or principal...
Today's moderator team includes: &
People are shocked when they find out I have 2 Master degrees and still in the classroom teaching.
Authentic decisions, choice, share is critical--if it's not true, it creates a distrusting environment.
A1 Appreciation & opportunities to make suggestions & changes trumps stipends for teachers. Teachers should be paid as leaders.
I find that some teachers are incredibly nervous when peers observe - but we really need to embrace it!
Allow more teacher choice and input. Leader role should change to person who is most capable with that topic/situation
I am a firm believer of leading from the back of the pack. Stand in front when you need to, but give students to lead/show expertise
Evening! Evan Robb- from VA happy to be here!
Ironically, I'm joining this chat briefly to show teachers in an evening, unpaid PD the awesomeness of this chat! They would agree!
Once saw an admin require a mtg to plan an initiative but distributed a photocopied plan at the end of the mtg.
Schools need to embrace teachers letting their students have agency in the classroom.
Hi Janet Avery joining from Jerome, Idaho - Curriculum director and moderator
A GOOD TEACHER has more to offer than any other school or district employee.
Thanks had little time. Glad to listen and learn.
I believe the MetLife surveys and such show that respect, appreciation, etc is more important than $ to teachers
Helen from Virginia. Lurking right now
ASSERT TEACHER leadership — committees, task forces, and working groups.
So true. Culture and practice can help.
Many do not regard role of teacher well--very sad. Recently leader said, ". . . .anyone can do job."
Ouch. Just the kind of thing true leadership is not about!
ASSERT TEACHER leadership — be an agent of growth and change. Stand strong for high quality instruction for all students.
Yes, as T's we need to begin our leadership by allowing Ss to lead us--critical and challenging, rewarding.
Tonight’s will focus on resources for . Join us at 8:30pm EST
Let's PAY GOOD TEACHERS to teach, not become principals, coaches or supts...
Yes and no--depends how it is handled in a system--in some systems, contrived and can be problematic.
We must talk about what matters in sometimes that is lost & is to our detriment as a highly-skilled profession.
Unfortunately sometimes T leaderhip & advocacy is not appreciated by (insecure) leaders
This is the key. This is the essential point. This would make a good poster. Thanks Mark.
now that is a challenge. I Would accept it & encourage Ss to join me
Even though it is in their best interest are all admins looking to cede power to teacher leaders?
Allow Ts time to work in PLC groups, learning & collaborating, empower Ts to lead in house PD "best practices" opportunity to lead
Hello, unpaid PD participants! Lots of learning available via Twitter. Edu-related chat sched: https://t.co/EUaDGiwaoU
Teachers need autonomy to pursue their purpose Giving them leadership and a voice in decision making is key.
WORD!!! Pay teachers for leading in the classroom. https://t.co/yUCxjhwM6k
Let's PAY GOOD TEACHERS to teach, not become principals, coaches or supts...
ASSERT TEACHER leadership — give voices to those who have none, listen to those who do.
WHAT if Ts were paid what Ps and supts get paid? Do you think good Ts would leave classrooms?
Yes, the culture has to be nurtured. I work in a lot of chronically low performing schools.
I suspect part of getting more Tchr leaders requires attending to patterns and demographics. Socialization is hard to overcome...
I think an admin that can leverage the strengths of teacher leaders is a healthy admin!
that's a lot of debt & time invested in degrees to validate expertise...
"Good leaders don't create followers, they create other leaders".
Hey, Janet. Glad you could join us. Excellent point.
Yes, asking Ss to help us meet our challenges to teach them well is terrific and helps a lot.
Anyone can teach, but it takes someone special to be a TEACHER. -->
Pub. School board meeting suggests community schools will change the ed landscape. Will it?
Adage: Teachers are empowered whether we like it or not. It just depends on who & how they expend that power.
Adage: Teachers are empowered whether we like it or not. It just depends on who & how they expend that power.
If it is only about "power" then it isn't true leadership. Distributive decision making is key.
Yep... a good place to start, then grow from there.
Indeed! As an asst principal, my dear principal instilled this in me. He cultivated us. We cultivated Ts.
Current Topic: In what ways can schools embrace greater teacher leadership to strengthen what we can do to teach well?
there needs to be balance between (me) going off half cocked and those going nowhere too.
Good question--I think there's room for more roles in the school--not just leader/teacher.
The real ? - What is value of a leader of students? What is the value of the leader of teachers? Same?
thx, but I am no one special … just a guy that teaches kids.
Ts start mentoring program w/new Ts, modeling and opening classrooms for peer observations. creates a growth mindset
I think they would stay and try harder to make sure Ss learned
Maybe that should say "Anyone can TALK" instead...
Like any job, it takes developing the skill, reading the information, loving the work.
what if I don't want to be a leader? Is it a requirement of the followers to step up?
WHEN the tough questions about instruction get asked, to whom do teachers look? That person is a TEACHER LEADER.
I would say half of current Ts would be out … too much competition.
Yet, I'm sure you are someone who takes the work seriously, continues to develop craft--matters.
That is a great Q! Ts that leverage strengths of Ss as leaders are leaders themselves!
Micromanagement is not leadership.
What's your favorite tool for a twitter chat?
That's it... How'd educ get so boxed in?
Yes and no, depends on culture of a building/school--what's valued?
but that's what makes you special!
...micromanagement kills teacher leadership. Agreed
Interesting question, what are other teacher leaders' thoughts?
had some work out years ago - it was about powerful T leaders - "find the Jill" - Jill is the T leader
Our MS principal is leveraging strengths of his dept. chairs by having them conduct instructional rounds.
especially if they don't recognize the culture they are knee deep in.
Also Center for Teacher Quality is a good follow for all things teacher leadership.
I think that teacher leader also isn't afraid to ask those tough questions ,
My goal for those dept. chairs and is to eventually get other Ts involved in those same instructional rounds.
Seems like all recent studies are pointing to the power of "mastery, purpose, autonomy" - Pink's Drive
The tension arises when "growing" requires some who are used to leading & being heard step back, grow silent https://t.co/aBidMbPrbj
Yep... a good place to start, then grow from there.
I know in Australia and New Zealand (amongst other places) there are head teachers who teach and admin.
The dept. chairs give feedback to staff about what they learned from the classes they visited - about T growth.
Replicates the factory model, and hasn't changed much, yet we are seeing some change.
My former grad instructor is at CTQ - shout out to
I have admins and co-teachers in my room all the time. I just wish I could go observe.
What if we had more admins, but they split time with teaching and administrating? ?
Also while there's been lots of evaluation, talk about T's, not so much about leaders.
Ts should be advocates for themselves, their profession, Ss... not an island hidden behind a door, to lead you must step outside
I challenge them to come walk in my shoes … they can’t do what I can do … I have the magic.
Tonight’s will focus on collaboration in . Join us at 9pm EST
outside the door can be a dark, scary place :0
That's a positive challenge for any of us who have been in the field for a while--good challenge to embrace.
Teachers should have more opportunities to collaborate across districts.
Yes! I had people in my room all the time too but craved more of watching others!
I believe you can quietly lead and be a model for Ss. Not all leaders are loud and boisterous
I think it starts with focusing on the development of leaders. Easy things like; learning walk, lunch discussions, all teacher lead.
A1
Peer observation is great! Admin should encourage this and keep out of it!
I also don't believe every teacher needs to be a school or hallway leader. Too many leaders cause problems too.
This is where politics comes in--often "hard questions" are not well received at all. You may be punished.
Peer observation is a powerful tool
makes so much sense... why isn't that happening more?
Bad Ts come from bad leadership … Good leader can make teachers better.
Many leaders from the teacher ranks become union leaders placing them in adversarial roles facing their Admins.
Update What Makes a Teacher Special to a Student? - Great teachers are constantly evaluating what works... https://t.co/hl9cpKhe9a
Agree that there are many ways to lead, but sometimes staying silent when there are issues can be a problem.
My principal likes it when Ts incorporate him into the lesson. That helps everyone feel more comfortable.
Agree quiet leadership is also so valuable. Have been reading Cain's work on introverts - helping me go deeper in this area.
Give teacher leaders the time, resources, and permission to run with their ideas, and to fail and learn from it.
sadly I agree. takes a ton of courage
This should not only be supported by school admin, but they should do everything they can to advocate for it https://t.co/Uox25aaKJJ
This should not only be supported by school admin, but they should do everything they can to advocate for it! https://t.co/v6rL55LuwD
I would say it is even more powerful to be a part of the discussion - colleagues learning together.
That's why I'm a fan of multiple roles--find the strengths, passions, vision and match w/roles in school house.
Want to find the leader … the guy standing behind/beside the person in the spotlight.
Being a teacher shouldn't be as difficult as it now is...
In many ways, I'd rather see whole schools/systems evaluated rather than individual teachers.
What is the MLK quote about remaining silent?
Can't each be a leader in their own way? Draw on the strengths of the team?
School and district change efforts ARE NEVER LEAD FROM THE CLASSROOM, but they should be! That’s where learning and teaching occurs.
Absolutely and let it Shine!! If Ts don't speak out, who will? politicians...No
Yes.. that should be the norm. Why is that not the case?
I'm learning a lot about this--how you couch the question. . tone, evidence, timing, persistance.
The BEST admins identify, empower, and use the talents of teacher leaders for the good of all.
we get so caught up in mission and vision that we forget about the kids.
absolutely! But I am NOT the silent type.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. MLK Jr.
I’m such a believer in benefit of professional conversations & collaborative discussions.
TEACHERS, because they are proximal to learners are in best position to lead school and district improvement efforts. Agree?
So many good Ts getting out of the field.
what? how can you hold math teachers accountable? (they are the redshirts of teh teaching world ;)
Stand firm in your convictions, and stand together...
agree that within their classrooms, are leaders unto themselves, need autonomy & freedom to iterate
This is huge issue--often teachers are last to hear about initiative, and you may hear about it at the ball field.
there is a difference between leader and drama. Sadly many do not see the difference
This is a critical point.
I agree, the list of things Ts and schools are responsible to "teach" had grown to the point a T needs "superpower"
Yes - and for someone who has walked the halls of our MS - you would be proud of the convos that are happening. :-)
chats with my Principal he is wise and cares about the kids
maybe through delegation, but it takes a lot of trust.
I believe that--and I agree often quiet, thoughtful individual gets the job done, we have a dynamic leader teacher like that
sad, sad, sad state of affairs... Being a good teacher should not be difficult, yet is is...
sad, sad, sad state of affairs... Being a good teacher should not be difficult, yet is is...
As long as schools are seen as places where learning is “done” to students, teachers, students, no one will reach their potential.
Packs a punch. In agreement with much of it. Dear Mom and I were discussing this just yesterday. https://t.co/OZ27yqXTq8
Lack of trust? Clarity? Collective vision? Tendency to micromanage? Perfectionism? Trouble accepting change?
There it is - the key! Trust and Relationships! :-)
you know the poster on the wall written b4 the last accreditation visit
In order to have carer advancement TEACHERS MUST LEAVE THE CLASSROOM…how stupid is that? Let teachers advance as teachers.
yes and if you are the lion roar for those with quiet voices
Yes, but sometimes the "drama" comes from a long history of oppression--too often people really don't listen.
Love this. I had a T colleague 1 time who said handing the dry erase marker to Ss helped him change his practice!
honestly, it can be very hard to develop that trust among teachers when we spend so little time together with each other
Really differently. Only 1/8 complete now. Good ideas but small part of the answer. https://t.co/zahgMY1rTk
"If we’re going to increase completion rates, we have to do things differently," says a community-college leader: https://t.co/BBLpxTIYUs
OMG, know it too well. Many struggling schools - this is the norm. Sad.
...I love that! So true in every aspect of life!
I think that I have become a leader in my building based on my years of experience there. Hard to do with new teachers.
"If you really care about starting a movement, have the courage to follow and show others how to follow."
Agree love the learning team approach: students, families, teachers, leaders, community members working together.
or encourage them to find their "roar"
Also sometimes leaders are placed in difficult places too.
The front door was just shut and bolted with this tweet!
Teachers are leaders. https://t.co/FSQJBfrMv4
In order to have carer advancement TEACHERS MUST LEAVE THE CLASSROOM…how stupid is that? Let teachers advance as teachers.
And Ts as lifelong learners.
There are many people who complain, but do nothing to make change. We have to advocate for ourselves and each other.
The concept of TEACHER LEADERSHIP isn’t new…yet formal roles for teacher leaders are rare. Why?
Yes, we’re still looking at school problems as “business management” problems instead of people problems.
Thats tough for some admin, as it is (1) different (2) unpredictable, and (3) abstract.
This is a big issue. I really like idea of building teams within the school--teams w/time to collaborate.
RT drangelapeery morgetron lookforsun Yes! I had people in my room all the time too but craved more of watching others!
I think you just asked the million dollar question Mark!
absolutely! a culture of "growth" & school as a place of learning, for all
If every teacher tried to be a "teacher leader," that would be really ineffective. It takes followers to normalize innovative ideas.
I left the classroom because I felt I would have more impact out of it...
And the public sometimes feeds into this too well
There is something there about teachers not willing to step up and do more when they don't get more $. Can be hard to justify.
I just FAVORITED this tweet SO HARD.
Tonights jackpot winner ->
Teams are one of the best things about middle school; great opportunities for collaboration
we have a formal teacher leadership position for any interested teacher, plus specific duties they can take on.
Is it because school systems are still too hierarchical?
Trust? I found out today that a teacher thinks I’m a D****Bag … Not sure why …guess trust thing not there
just hard to do, between stress and extra jobs to pay the bills
Agreed! Great . https://t.co/7Uf57UEkmx
Favorite extensions - goo.gl URL shortener, readability, easybib, Diigo, screencastify, save to G-drive - all save time
Yet I think there is an intersection here. I love some of the articles from Harvard Business School - have helped me
If Ts don't advocate, then we suffer the results of people making decisions for education who are not informed
Absolutely, boys of color need to see themselves represented as teachers, leaders & fathers. https://t.co/WkyQ6fLtgY
Do teacher leaders feel/have a responsibility to go beyond their duties as a teacher to lead their colleagues?
boots on ground have unique perspective but forest vs trees i.e. Teacher attached to habits missing big shifts
So glad I could tune in to for a few moment! Thanks for the great conversation. Now off to a board meeting. :-)
Now that I'm on a great team at 5th, I LOVE it--so much share and care for all Ss, teachers.
sometimes we have to let go of the past and start a new path.
Go ask the person why he/she thinks you're a D-bag! Confront but gently. :)
Master levels of Teachers..:)
It’s true. There also have to be followers. https://t.co/MHCsASIwNh
If every teacher tried to be a "teacher leader," that would be really ineffective. It takes followers to normalize innovative ideas.
Yes that's where fair wages and time come in--essential.
value point... now ask yourself, so how's that working for folks?
I work where there is a fair wage.
Sure, learn from anywhere, but I think it’s time for there to invent our own “educational leadership.”
Just joining. Seems like an fascinating conversation tonight
I begged to remain teaching one class as an admin - nope! All should teach if working in a school!
The 'rhetomatic' = teaching rhetorical analysis through structured inquiry. Very snazzy stuff.
the thing is, there are people like that everywhere. Plus everybody doesn't need to like you :)
Ts serve as admin for the day plus lead areas like licensure, scheduling, athletics, and after school programs.
I don't think teacher leaders feel it's a "responsibility" as much as a passion for them to lead and it comes naturally
Hi, Mark. I'm here from Long Island to join you at . Where are we?
Yet, there is so much unrealized leadership potential, for so many different teachers in many different areas
True--but I think some are too quick to dismiss saying "drama" when there is a true, important story there.
ASK! You may find out you were misinformed ... Maybe the person who told you that is the DB.
even so, if they expected another 2 weeks of bonding time you might think....
This dismissal, in part, could be connected to some of the dismissal of women's voices.
LOL … I could go passive aggressive and get a D-Bag badge and wear it around on staff dev day. But i won't
How might we question plush ascribe in this uncertain time?
There are some that are very quick to dismiss a woman's voice.
Absolutely! If they don't who will??
School leaders can’t assume that teachers only want to maximize “test score gains.” Most want human potential gains.
In Beijing i observed a teacher teach in a classroom that was surrounded by seats for other teachers to observe too...
teachers are definitely passionate about what they do!
nice steps... ... but what about carer ladder for teachers? Master teachers? Teachers as national Treasures?
Yes, there are many out there working at new paradigms. is one.
IF BEING A TEACHER LEADER means more meeting, reports and less class time then what good is that?
I don't know why we can't do this here. It's part of the (flawed) American mentality "business model"
sure... and how often is that perspective given support, encouragement, voice, etc?
I like the idea of different kinds of roles in a school house.
Yes 4 laboratory setting. When I ran 1 I had pre-chat & post-chat w lesson presentation. Leaders/Ts were present.
I think that would be MAGICAL. It would help admins remember ... many forget ... quickly!
Update Does Education Have A Pinterest Problem? - ... The post Does Education Have A Pinterest Problem?... https://t.co/0ucc78oECd
It is not profitable for other teachers to watch another teacher.
Much of the public thinks Ts have 3 months off and have a cushy job that ends at 3pm
What a great idea! Maybe we need a demonstration room in schs with a viewing area.
Schools w/ collegial collaboration:
Rely on teacher leaders| Principal nurtures and supports
Yes, we must be flexible in our approach to lead the learners.
Happening somewhat w/coach role, curriculum leaders. I like hybrid roles that combine teaching/leadership
who is leading whom? for what? why does it matter?
The real question is how, do we change this incorrect perception? https://t.co/hNXKUqNgNl
Much of the public thinks Ts have 3 months off and have a cushy job that ends at 3pm
What happens when you have teacher leaders in place and your admin team changes? How does that transition look?
Not as much as it should be. Teachers that matter change lives, values not measured by statistical models.
Yep! Keep those teachers teachin' all damn day!
we need less reports and meeting and more conversations and sharing.
Yes, I believe in the pathway for reflective practitioners to own their journey.
That sounds a lot like what used to pass for “enriched” class - more work and little fun.
I agree... you cannot 'measure' how effective teachers are with tests. https://t.co/aIZc36E8ua
Not as much as it should be. Teachers that matter change lives, values not measured by statistical models.
career ladder is a wonderful way of grooming instructional leaders from within
I think folks like us on this chat make progress on correcting this ea day!
Organic Change requires tchr leaders & relationships built upon trust
Tchrs are the key agents of change in schools
Love the way you say that, Carol.
Im a school leader and I want rid of useless wk books that destroy creativity.Lets teach from the heart and not from the text
Hi Carol.. welcome to join in with
I think that we would need teacher leaders less if our admin had the time to spend in the classrooms instead of behind the desk.
I like that - but what is the first step? How do we create capacity amongst Ts?
Interesting thought! How might this look?
Bingo... makes so much sense!
Asking for a friend.... Best spirit week activities for an elementary school?
"We spend most of our time breaking things and working to discover that we’re wrong. That’s the secret." https://t.co/7NAZMR4xew
great teachers shouldn't feel pressure to step out of the classroom, instead we need to find incentives for them to remain.
Dress like your favorite teacher!
The best enabler of “teacher leaders?” School leaders who know they don’t know all about teaching!
I started asynchronous PD program ran 4 10 yrs before I retired/still running. ReflectivePathway
We change it, by not tolerating it when people say, "but you get summers off ..."
Why is it assumed that great teachers natural progression is administration? Make them mentors and keep them in classroom!
I think it depends on what you mean by stepping out of the classroom. We want them to be involved in as much as they can
Right. Get out, go read a book to a class - interact. What a great job that would be
and then there are some Admin that should have stayed in the classroom …
get shit pay plus disrespect, very bad ROI, seemingly not great indicator of
Yes and are willing to learn. https://t.co/hMOW5nEHaa
The best enabler of “teacher leaders?” School leaders who know they don’t know all about teaching!
Love seeing my Twitter friends (Paul is F2F friend from Long Island)
I think it's hard too. Not the actual Ting, all the other "stuff" added to my plate
I agree, this is interesting and I am curious to know why movement like this have never happened
Understanding where students are coming from is imperative when handling discipline. Not everything is as it seems
Ts request "protected" PLC time, so important!
Yes, and when leaders embrace that as part of their role it makes an organization stronger.
Dennis, I believe the collegial circle approach actually works.
And some who shouldn't be in the school building at all!
The hybrid roles are where the potential lies for better schools, happier teachers.
I feel a responsibility to younger teachers. I was mentored/looked out for when new. I enjoy helping out the rest.
- Organic change requires trust and letting go- what staff create they value even more!
Yes find those who are instructional classrm leaders & let them soar in trusting culture.
You'd be amazed at how often I educate fellow plane passengers on this point!
Posters flying up at the Board Meeting "Public education is not for sale" . The community is clearly upset
As a 4th yr teach I know being encouraged by admin to seek my own mentors (outside of assigned one) was HUGE for my growth.
Agree. Hope that there are more of these in a few years so I can stop being a "traveling T"
We need less meetings, less reports, less box ticking and less answering to the Dept.We need more quality teaching from the heart
I like approach--tried it at conference, our PLCs work very well too.
The best teacher leaders become school librarians so they can grow teachers in the building through co-teaching.
Old school model-we need to build a culture of trust & collegiality
I agree, but the same is true of some tchrs.
they complain in June, but are grateful in September :)
If a great T leaves classroom for position as admin, does the advocating for Ts stop? That T/Admin should be the best to empower Ts
The number of articles collected here reflect the role of phonology and morphology in early childhood literacy.
I would take TIME or MONEY as an incentive.
If we could change the paradigm of education, we wouldn't have so much problems with school
PLCs need space to grow in circles of trust.
Do less "meetings" mean less collaboration? Do you mean useless meetings?
Gr8 point! Ts often choose 2stay in the clsrm because that's where their heart thrives & kids reside https://t.co/cnK4h767gN
In order to have carer advancement TEACHERS MUST LEAVE THE CLASSROOM…how stupid is that? Let teachers advance as teachers.
When there is too much distance from classroom, often choices/decisions become irrelevant.
Teaching is NOT for everyone, doesn't make you a bad person ... takes a special kind of crazy
agree. All staff in school bldg should be teaching something regularly. Best way to understand and support Ts.
and they need to spread beyond the walls of the school.
From my time as , administrator in class was awkward AF,canned/top-shelf lessons not representative of everyday
I think the real difficulty in the classroom isn't learning how to teach, it is learning how to care for so many different kids.
Yes it does! And I always think middle school teaching is the ultimate crazy!
That's why leaders need 2 be visible in schools. Model positive behavior.
There's lots of potential here, lots of promise, but difficult to break down old structure.
so many different kids at the same time too!
Our schools have put some great new structures in place--we're moving in that direction
I just don't equate most meetings w valuable collaboration.
Sometimes that happens and that's sad.
Justin, let's hope more and more classrms hear over T voice.
Sometimes the leader advocates and that's good--depends a lot on structure, leadership, politics, culture.
Just glanced at the article - looks terrific
This is where our myriad of styles come in, that's why I like the idea of choice for ways to participate.
literally every. Single. Observation. Was like that. Metaphorical equivalent of standardized test for .
Excellent teaching requires collaboration, and what I mean is that usually that's called a "meeting"
1 strategy: person who called mtg sends agenda beforehand and stick to it. Sched begin/end times.
The us/them mentality has to end. We all SHOULD be there for learners. Principal=principal teacher
Thanks to our great team of moderators: and all who participated in our chat.
Our school leader is very visible, a valued part of the culture, school.
And that is the way it should be
Just like we provide choices for our students... teachers can lead through a variety of avenues https://t.co/qeHG0KQdoV

Even better, those involved in the meeting help shape the agenda

I teach 6th grade ...It is Crazy ... did 10 yrs teaching 7th grade Im not ok in the head. LOL
Why must we have a formal role to lead? A T, is inherently a Leader, more Ts need to trust that this is their role
Good point--yes, it's important to meet. Our team meets about twice a week, keep a running log for talk too
and talks the talk to make him a partner in education
I want quality teaching from the heart and not from the text.I embrace ICT and my favourite bk is a picture book. Its about balance
Meet and, even more important, ACT! Innovate!
Thanks to all-great So much potential w/new structures for schools, leadership!
Teach students TO think and not HOW to think. That is the best knowledge we can provide
When I'm off the road doing PD, I volunteer in grade 6 and 7 classrooms! Special kind of crazy
Thanks also to all who joined --- lots of good ideas, some great challenges too
How might we calculate muddy gaucherie in a way that both nurtures and assists?
Thanks everyone. It was an inspiring conversation tonight. Enjoying teaching and leading this week!
I second what Maureen said. Thanks and moderators.
As long as meetings have a clear point and can't be done as well by email.
what are some things your school is changing?
It takes a lot of strength to let others shine around you( and sometimes outshine you). Not all admin have that courage
Flipped meetings are the most productive as long as teachers value the topic!
We must teach the way students learn, rather than expecting them to learn the way we were taught.
Ts should embrace that being a "teacher" is a leadership position, we are always modeling these qualities, empowering Ss
Ts should also model inquiry and problem solving for their student learners. Lead by example.
just like businesses have to adjust or perish, we must adjust or perish as great teachers into just teachers
Thank you for a Wonderful Chat everyone!! Get out there and be the Voice for education, Ts & Ss
We are opening a new STEAM room on Wednesday March 16 th.Not a workbook or wk sheet in sight.Quality hands on learning First in Irl
. The courage to be a leader is often overlooked. It is also impossible to spot in an interview for the job.
I tell mine to use their brain no mine.
THANK YOU for participating in Insightful exploration of greater teacher leadership of schools. Co/Mods:
Show a 10 yo a pager and ask what they think
model the behaviors you want to see in your students everyday, reap the benefits of involved students
difficult sometimes for students to understand that concept if answers before were given with relative ease
and that applies to administrator equally, maybe even more. Remember the teachers are your classroom.
Thanks to all who participated in tonight’s . As always, I appreciate co-mods:
I really don't want to be an admin. But I want to interview for open jobs in my district. I think they need some honesty
couldn't agree more. If I don't stretch my boundaries, how could I expect my teachers to? Be the change you want to see
