#caedchat is for California educators, by California educators. All are welcome as moderators and participants discuss issues that emerge in California education, which are generally applicable to other regions of the United States.
Hi #caedchat - I’m your moderator for tonight! Let’s all take a moment to introduce ourselves. Where are you from? What do you teach? (And don’t forget the hashtag!)
Hey David. And lots of other names I recognize. This is Peter Paccone. San Marino High School social studies teacher and KQED In the Classroom Coordinating Editor. #caedchathttps://t.co/xMxZ3Bvxa8
A1: I now live in the LBC but was born and raised in Downey (not too far away) I actually teach at the elementary school I attended as a child #CAedchat
A1 I have lived in So Cal either San Diego or Los Angeles since 1985. I moved here from coastal New Hampshire and never looked back. CA truly is the Golden State. #caedchat Spent 1 yr in Nor Cal - hated it.
I work in the Silicon Valley. Moved from a Sacramento to Bay Area 23 yrs ago. Left Los Angeles for Sac when I was 24. Traded the cement and sand for rovers and trees. #caedchat
A2: I love having my family less than 20 miles away. I think it is awesome that in less than 2 hours, I can be in the mountains, desert, or ocean. #caedchat
A2: I love that we have the beach, the mountains, the desert and whatever you call that in-between spot. :) (which is where I live. (Inland North County! #caedchat
I'm now in Fresno (working in Selma). I've been here 4 years. My visit home this summer was the first time it wasn't painful returning. I'm growing more and more content with the Central Valley as time rolls on. #caedchat#itwasaroughtransition
A1 I grew up in Kings Country between Fresno & Kern Counties. It is one of the poorest areas in the country. I teach 7th grade ngss integrated science at NAS Lemoore. 16 yrs at NASL & 25 yrs total in Kings Cty in 3 other districts #CAedchat
A2 I love that we have so much to do near by, nat. His. Museums, art museums, botanical gardens, hiking, ocean, agriculture, parks, tons of resources for a teacher who loves tying trips into curriculum #caedchat
A2 Los Angeles needs to change its official motto to Really, it's not that bad.. I love being part of a big city that has beach access, mountains, and wide open spaces. Traffic sucks tho. #caedchat
A2: though it has its downsides, I do like the brainpower and innovation culture here in Silicon Valley. I don’t *love* it, but always interesting people connected to the universities and industries #caedchat
A2: I love that we’re driving distance to so many great experiences. Sand, snow, desert it surprisingly not all of my Ss have had these experiences #CAedchat
A2. The local county, state and national parks protect and preserve so many natural and cultural resources. Such great places to explore and develop an appreciation for our planet. #caedchat
A2: I really like the people and the diversity. Weather is also prefect. Love the proximity to the SF Bay and ocean. It is semi-urban with great hiking trails #caedchat
A2: I love CA so much! I lived on the East Coast for a few years. It was nice, but there is nowhere quite like CA! We have it all- beach, mountains, desert, etc. and so many options for field trips! #caedchat
A2: I also like the diversity of the Bay Area. In my school, at my gym, wherever… people from so many cultures, religions, variety of languages, foods, customs, mostly getting along and learning #caedchat
A3: Loved my desert/lake time at Havasu. Quads, dune buggies, boats. Went out there for over 25 years. Great family memories. Miss it. Just spent a week on Balboa Island...I have a new happy place :) #caedchat
I have to be honest...coming from the 619, Fresno was hard to get to love. But access to Yosemite/Kings Canyon and the Central Coast really has been nice! The key to living is Fresno is getting out of Fresno with some frequency! #caedchat
A2: Community is a big part of my life. I am in Los Angeles because of the Jewish community. Without that I am not sure I would be here. Lots of traffic is an understatement and housing through the roof. #caedchat
I like when I'm out & about running into current Ss & Parents, former Ss & teachers from other districts that I've worked with or as CTA. Ag, Corrections & US Navy are our largest employers. #CAedchat
A1: I live and work in Campbell, CA... a neighborhood in San Jose. I grew up in the area and left for almost 10 yrs and have been so happy being back in the SJ area #caedchat
A3 I like going home up to Sonoma county, also the Bay Area. There are some great places to see in the SF area, makes for a great week long trip with a class. With lots of cool learning opportunities and a chance 4 Ss to see something that’s not so cal #caedchat
A3 I love visiting Lake Tahoe. Winter or summer. It's a great place to get away. Turns out, I don't mind visiting snow as long as I don't have to live in it. #caedchat
A3. Yosemite Yosemite Yosemite. And Bodie. San Francisco. Anywhere with a walking history tour.
Also, it tickles me that I’ve been to all of the places in @CohenD’s photos (so far!) #caedchat
A3: I love the Ca coast especially up by Fort Bragg. I don’t like heat. My husband and I love spending time visiting California’s National Parks. #CAedchat
A3: Many great choices - how do I choose between mountains and coast? But I’m going to go with Marin County coast - Muir Woods, Point Reyes #caedchat - or Mendocino area
A2: We are living in an era in which billions of people are grappling to promote communication, tolerance, and understanding over the more destructive forces of war, terrorism, and political chaos that have characterized the beginning of the 21st Century. - Aberjhani #caedchat
A3: Los Angeles - Titos Tacos, Johnnies Pastrami & family. Central/Norhtern Coast - the air is clean. Anaheim - Disneyland. Bay Area - sleeping in. San Diego - tourism. #caedchat
Agreed! Moved from CA to a rural town in the Midwest for a very short time in my life... culture shock for sure not having all the diversity of people, foods, traditions, etc #caedchat
A3: My absolute favorite is getting in my @Jeep (her name is Tomboy) and exploring the desert here in California! It's super peaceful and beautiful, with some amazing history! #caedchat
A2: The city, the neighborhoods, the people, the diversity, the nature, the history, the ocean, the weather, connections to the world... Everything, except how pricy cost of living is here for everyone. #caedchat
A2: I love that you have a little bit of everything in the Bay Area... good food, good hiking, music scene, beaches, wine country, big cities, small towns, diverse culture ... and what we don’t have is a pretty short drive #caedchat
A3 I am Cal Grad. Most of old friends in the Bay Area. I am Berkeley itself often and even take all 100+ of my Ss there every year. Zachary's pizza, Cal Sports, concerts & my friends. Being in Central Cal Nat'l parks close as are SJ, Sacto, Bay Area & LA #caedchat
A4: embarrassingly, I simply have not explored northern CA. Not Bay Area...I mean by the Oregon border. And I LOVE green, so you would think I would have! Must figure this out! #caedchat
Agreed! Lived in Venice & Hermosa for close to 10 years before moving back to the Bay and loved it! So much to do & met some of my best friends there! #caedchat
A4 Ashamed to say I have never been to Yosemite. But I will be attending #CueRockstar at Minarets HS July 30-Aug 1. Looking forward to exploring the area after. #caedchat
A4: Top of my list still to visit in CA would have to be Death Valley - otherwise, I’ve done pretty well in this state hitting most areas, major attractions #caedchat
A3: My favorite CA trips are to one of any of the fabulous vineyards in this state (whether Napa/Sonoma or SB or Morgan Hill or Livermore or...!) or to Disneyland ;) #caedchat
A4 I have driven the whole state from end to end both coastal and interior so I can’t say that there’s too many regions that I haven’t seen, I’d like to see San Diego a little more, that trip was limited #caedchat
Oh you must soon! So beautiful! I love the drive along the 1 north... Bodega Bay if you’re a Hitchcock fan, Mendocino is gorgeous, and Eureka!! #caedchat
#caedchat A4: I have been all over the state. I would love to go to Yosemite again, I've only been once. My next trip is to San Francisco to see my awesome cousin!
A3: California is full of so many “Gold Mines” for the traveler. I love it all. The Sierra Nevada, the coastal towns, the historic parts of our cities, the excitement of LA... Personally, I love it all. #caedchat
A5: I simply love the mountains. And our students in Selma simply don't have a lot of opportunities to head up there. I'd love to see some enrichment opportunities for @SHSBears students to head up to #Yosemite or #KingsCanyon#caedchat
A4: I’ve never been to Death Valley, but I think I’d go in winter. Being born & raised in the fog, I don’t handle hear that well. Still the scenery looks mesmerizing! #CAedchat
A5: Loved teaching 4th grade history and regions. Great for field trips...mission by train. Lack-luster compared to the east coast as far as American history, monuments, etc. Earthquakes have always played a role, too! #caedchat
A1: I was born and raised in Southern California in the suburbs of LA...although I no longer live in CA I’m using this time to reflect on my spent living in this beautiful state #caedchat
A5: My favorite CA geo-facts:
1. Point Reyes Peninsula was formerly part of Baja California. It’s been sliding north for hundreds of thousands of years.
2. If you like volcanoes, you can walk up a cinder cone in Lassen Volcanic Ntl. Park
#caedchat
I'm still trying to find a video tour of the entire SF Bay waterway (Delta to San Jose to the Pacific). Maybe I build it with Google Maps. I want an underwater one too. #caedchat
A5: I love the variety in California. Mountains, beaches, deserts, we have it all! This makes for excellent learning regarding regions of the state in elementary school classrooms. #CAEdChat
A5 the faults I love that some are clearly visible and vistable, and our wide range of biomes as well as how we have changed some of the those to support lrg. Pop. I teach science and hist. so all can be covered in class #caedchat
A5: for my teaching though (HS English), relevant facts have included gold rush, and ppl migrating to CA cites and Central Valley from other parts of the US
#caedchat
A5 also a science teacher: CA has awesome geology everywhere in the state. As Kim said plate tectonics in action, all the ecosystems, water systems really interest me. Our history & science of water is fascinating. The CV is basically an irrigated desert. #caedchat
Of all the very cool geographic wonders I've seen and experienced in this state, this was one of the most memorable. Only downside - I could find no application to high school social studies. #caedchat
Let’s see..there’s wine tasting.. Volcano is a charming and beautiful little town. Indian Grinding Rock SP is there, as is Black Chasm cave. Further up highway 88 are Silver Lake and Caples Lake. #caedchat
A5: part 1:2 I love that our state geography is diverse. Our class field trip is to the aquarium so we spend a lot of time sharing the coast. #caedchat
A5b: I taught HS Spanish, but to gringos from suburban San Diego. So while I taught, my geography focus was not on CA, but on our neighbor to the south (MX). My students were (I guess not surprisingly) totally ignorant. #caedchat
A2: I love how relatively central it is to the beach, mountains and amusement parks...one thing people don’t know is that it has been used in various movies and tv shows such as Wayne’a World and Roswell #caedchat
Q6 living in SB area it has very strong ties to the native population Spanish and Mexican acquisition. You see this in naming of streets, local festivals, school names, mascots, student history electives etc. #caedchat
A6 When I drive around LA, I see big money everywhere. The people who argue that the rich are leaving California because of high taxes really have a lot of explaining to do. https://t.co/YIfjqMXD2B#caedchat
A6: Being in Selma ("Raisin Capital of the World"), a tie-in with labor relations (think #CesarChavez) is obvious, but I think not done as often as it should be). #caedchat#UnionStrong#grapes#raisins
A6: Yorba Linda, where I grew up & currently work, started off as a small town, large lots- then the east end was developed...huge homes, very affluent...definitely changed the shape and culture. Good bye to the wide open spaces. Little appreciation for the history #caedchat
A5: Living in California we have nearby examples of all sorts of ecosystems. My students spend a week at an Outdoor Ed camp in La Honda. This provides avenues in to learn about habitats, living things, #ecology, human impact, etc. #caedchat
Ben Madley from UCLA has written a great book on this. https://t.co/6FehCADDdW#caedchat It's more of a college level text, but a good way to show HS students how historians write & research.
A6 We have a great class set of books about the history of HB from Teacher Created Materials! I used it to teach a short unit about the history of HB! Helps the students realize how much HB has changed! Was an oil town before it became a vacation spot. #caedchat
A6. Where I am currently, there weren’t year-round residents until relatively recently. The Washoe tribe wintered near Reno. Deforestation to send lumber to silver mines (used to fund Civil War) led to decrease in lake clarity. (Tahoe) #caedchat
A6 my district unique: 1 school is almost all families of farmworkers, another serves our Tachi Rancheria & the other 2 schools on a Naval Air Base where kids move often. I also wish more was taught about CA history before missions & how railroad shaped our area #caedchat
A6: And then more locally, Palo Alto history is tied to Stanford, and Leland Stanford made his fortune in gold rush, banking, and transpacific railroad - lots of historical threads woven together #caedchat
A6 Andres Resendez has another great book on Indian Slavery that is not really addressed in the CA standards, but should be. https://t.co/NADAdaYkDd#caedchat
A1: I live in the Central Valley. Born and raised in Clovis (gateway to the Sierras) and now live in Sanger (Nation's Christmas Tree City) Only time I love outside the valley was for college, in Eastern Washington #caedchat
A2: Love the community of Cutler-Orosi. It is impoverished, rural and gang riddled, but the kids are so unique and fun to serve. Reedley has the best taco joint, Ortega's Taqueria, bar no! #CAedchat
A6 #CAEdChat We're in Sacramento, so Ss see where Chavez marched for civil rights, and where President Ford was shot, and where protests cross the highway...
A6: Current state of the Bay Area as tech and innovation hub has a strong influence on our schools these days... we’re opening a new school this August centered around design thinking & innovation #caedchat
A7: Since I am out of the classroom, I like to use the past to see how we can improve the future, avoid mistakes. I'd love for our education system to become a modern marvel! #caedchat
A4 #caedchat I've only lived here a decade, so I missed all the "elementary school field trip" things, like Spanish mission tours, and Hearst Castle, and Yosemite.
A5: I (sort of) like the fact that our area is on two different plates. Apparently the reservoir that we cross to go to Half Moon Bay is part of the San Andreas Fault. #caedchat
A6: Our school district is huge. Two high schools, three middle schools & several elementary schools. Being such a large district, so close to SF, ethnic diversity has been the factor that has most shaped our district. It reminds us all we are #human first. #caedchat
Q7 I feel like I had to take a CA History class in undergrad. Is that a state #HigherEd requirement? We can't add any more to CA-HSS standards. Too much content. #caedchat
A5: I love how CA can "double" as any place on Earth, hence Hollywood. I love how you can ski and surf in same day. I use this when teaching about manifest destiny. #CAedchat
A5: I find it interesting that we have so many different types of terrains...beach, mountains, desert...forests...when I taught first grade in CA I made sure to teach habitats in science and referenced CA with having more than one within the state #caedchat
A7. At the K/1/2 level, learning about the effects of paving, driving, erosion, etc on runoff and lake clarity and thinking of how to preserve the lake. #caedchat
yep! San Andreas fault runs along Hwy 280 and into Marin Co. - you can see a major rupture point from the 1906 quake near Point Reyes - a fence that ran straight until quake ripped it 8 feet out of alignment or something like that #caedchat
A7: As a 5th grade T we spent a lot of time talking about the impact of agriculture and immigration on CA history. Even SJ & Campbell were all orchards and canning facilities not too long ago #caedchat
I teach U.S. History and work in CA history whenever possible. For example, when the students are learning about muckraking, I ask them to take out there Chromebooks and find out who was LA's most famous muckraker. Twas Clifford Clinton of Clifton's Cafeteria Know him? #caedchat
A2 #CAEdChat I love that I live in suburban area and there's cows in a pasture 2 blocks away, wild turkeys crossing the roads, and I teach in Sacramento. It's awesome that we have the urban, suburban, rural all within 30 minutes.
A8: By the Great Horn Spoon, Two Years Before the Mast (Richard Henry Dana). Not books, but the whole California's Gold series with Huell Howser #caedchat
I try to share CA history as well as importance of San Joaquin Valley as much as it relates to science. lots of families do like being stationed in Lemoore so I try to share what is special about our area of the world. #caedchat
A8: "The Ghosts of the Cabrillo Lighthouse:" When their small boat is washed ashore not far from their home, a brother and sister are unconcerned until they realize they have been transported back in time. #caedchathttps://t.co/aqq6eE0tyQ
A7: I'm curious about the stories of the mercury pools during the Gold Rush, thus the name of the newspaper San Jose Mercury News? Effects on Bay Area health? #caedchat
