Today I was given suspect advice on motivating a team. I need to "yell at them more."
-
So I want to talk about geniune ways to motivate people that aren't abrasive.
-
Candy. Candy always seems to work. ;)
-
I recall feeling very strongly about candy as a motivator.
-
Yelling is always a great motivator! :/
-
Yeah, that's when dealing with kids, but when dealing with adults you can do anything! ;)
-
We did a whole chat about candy with
-
I don't want people yelling at me. I'm not yelling at anyone.
-
When working with adults it is all about the outcome and relationship. Can we respectfully get to a goal? Then great!
-
I might have to up it to donuts.
-
"Gestational Diabetes LOL" is my next band.
-
Why not just a regular face-to-face talk. Sometimes not as enjoyable but seem to work
-
Talking about goals is crucial to goals actually being met. I totally agree.
-
And once goals are set, yelling about them will not achieve them :)
-
-
I'm 200% more motivated when I know I'm doing something good for kids instead of jumping through bureaucratic hoops.
-
Right?!?! Boxes to check off don't motivate everyone.
-
-
Did you see all the hats Kelly has that she shared during ? She really is best!
-
There's also a huge difference between "have-to's" to maintain employment and "motivation" to be highly successful.
-
Yeah. Keeping a job is important, but the hoops can't be placed above actual student learning.
-
Intrinsic motivation is more difficult to control than extrinsic in others, but it endures as long as those w/ it persevere.
-
So many people are motivated in different ways, find what is that persons motivation and use it for the better good.
-
There's also something to be said about finding the right people for the task at hand so they can feel success.
-
-
Trying to motivate everyone the same way is a fast way to fail.
-
As an admin, how do you leverage intrinsic motivation?
-
Some love public praise, some like private, some don't want it at all. You have to know your people.
-
OK, , I really want to be motivated to participate in this chat, but I had far too much cheese tortellini and am now in
-
Some love candy; some have gestational diabetes.
-
If there's a huge goal - then setting points where you can celebrate any growth helps keep motivation going.
-
What motivates me? Not fear or reward, but trust. When I'm trusted to 'make it happen' and allowed to do my thing/take risks.
-
So I'm checking out early, but am glad I got in the Storify. ;)
-
It is not a simple formula; it requires relationships which identify values & respective strengths of colleagues.
-
I think building in time for authentic, real discussion can help get people motivated. Giving space to work together w/out agenda
-
...also the promise of a glass of wine. 😉
-
We are typically most intrinsically motivated by that about which we are passionate and in which we have great confidence.
-
Think about Do people go because they love being awake at 6am on a Saturday? Nope. They go because they want to talk.
-
Ooh very true. I don't want to do things I'm pretty sure I'm going to fail at.
Like play basketball.
-
-
Sometimes, we have to shift the "why" which motivates, even such that some degree of failure isn't totally defeating.
-
This makes me think of the "forced fun" that facilties do at the beginning of the year.
-
Love joining chats that lead me to find inspiring, smart educators to follow like
You matter!
-
Chase the Bacon is my favorite.
-
-
It's an icebreaker. Lemme see if I can find it.
-
-
-
Are you familiar with the book Drive? It's a GREAT read (or listen - I drive a lot)
-
So you enjoy Drive while you drive?
-
-
Yes, the WHY is important to Ts and Ss. Kids are eager to engage when they see relevance and share passion. Same w adults.
