Welcome to #ATChat! Introduce yourself and tell us how you are getting though this crazy winter weather! GIF: Bill Murray from Groundhog Day saying, “I’ll give you a winter prediction. It’s going to be cold, it’s going to be gray and it’s going to last you the rest of your life”
A1: depends on the grade level/age - by the time my Ss leave school I want them to know things like meaning of $ and time, using tools like calculators - but when younger…math and operations… #ATChat
A1 Number sense is such a critical skill for kids and I feel like we often abandon it to quickly for kids with significant disabilities for the sake of functional skills #ATChat

Leslie from LI, NY jumping in late. Very interested in hearing what others use for this. Always feel like there is a lack of supportive and adaptive math tools that have ease of use! #ATchat
But it was still a serious question, right? Too often, especially with kids with more complex needs, their math goals are all "Functional." Is there a definition? #ATchat
A1- The biggest area of concern that I run into is the lack of adapted materials in the area of math- most programs do not read or write math well and there aren't as many adapted manipulatives #atchat

For students who need an app like Mod Math we tend to use Panther Math Paper instead. I find both apps to be not very organic to use and cumbersome for some of my younger students. #ATchat
A-2 Love hands on, manipulative experiences tied with literature and/or authentic experiences such as vending machines. Have u seen Pringles cans multipliers? https://t.co/ClPERQiJOY#ATchat
A2- Our teachers use a lot of ipad apps to make math more accessible and beyond that, talking calculators, large buttons, grid paper, and other low-tech AT. #atchat
#atchat for what it's worth-here are the core standard areas for Math 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics. More to come
I couldn’t agree more! As someone who works with high incident population of elementary aged students, I find there is such a lack of user-friendly resources. So much is geared towards HS or is too cumbersome/overwhelming for students/not realistic for teachers to manage. #ATchat
#atchat and here is the other half 5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
#atchat A2: Math now has a HUGE language component. Students have to verbalize & write their thinking process...So don't forget all the writing supports. Think of the math vocab words hard to spell....
A3: So much of math is literacy based. The days of straight forward computation are long gone. Our youngest learners are asked to read/decipher wordy multi-step word problems while looking for key words #ATchat
Did you miss something at #ATIA19 Don't worry-here is a
@wakelet that has the link to the Session Directory (w/links to some handouts) + the Twitter archive which has over 1500 Tweets from the whole week! Share it with everyone: https://t.co/DN487vh3Na#Atchat@atiaorlando
A3 Math and literacy are so intertwined. One of my fav sorting activities is to have students sort magnetic letters in as many ways as possible. By color, lower/upper case, basement lettered, ceiling letters, curved letters, straight lettered, etc #ATchat
#ATchat Need TTS to read all the word problems to them and all this new vocabulary! One thing I heard at ATIA is that teachers are modifying the vocabulary because they don't think students understand it but then the students are not being exposed to the language of math!
A3- The communication piece of both are so important. Especially for students with significant disabilities who may need to express their math in words more than numbers. #atchat
A-3 we have made theme based math litkits. There are some great websites suggesting math related literature easily found in every school library. Here’s one: https://t.co/PgS1lTGxqM#ATchat

A4- Communication in the area of math is incredibly important, especially if a student has accessibility issues that prevent them from documenting their math processes and thoughts in the standard paper-and-pencil manner. #atchat
Changing our own language when talking about reading & constantly saying "auditory readers" & sharing the definition of literacy can hopefully one day change for state testing so all Ss can have the APPROPRIATE accommodations they need in ALL platforms of learning. #ATchat
A4: accepting and actually setting up varied ways for students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts. Visual models, labeling, verbal responses, etc. #atchat
A4: Sometimes we have to be super creative in how we get the information back out from a student to demonstrate their knowledge. This could be true whether they have a language impairment or an English language learner or are someone who needs AAC #atchat
#atchat friends in case you missed this earlier this week please take a moment to fill out the needs assessment and share with your colleagues. I am very excited about the forward progress we’re making and cannot wait to share more with you!
#ATIA19 and #atchat family, we are gaining some positive traction in our Intellikeys Open Source project, want to share a request for input again, take a few min/complete this form & share...Great conversations at/after ATIA-Let’s harness this momentum!! https://t.co/ZdnDGs6RHb
#atchat I've been using the term "TechXpert Readers".Auditory reading doesn't value that most Ss can see words. I'm not sure kids want to be labeled as auditory readers. TechXpert Reader is someone who uses technology features and tools to read, comprehend and learn! Thoughts?
But as I discovered a couple of weeks ago always important to have another tangible objects available for students with the newly placed G-tubes and NPO restrictions.... #ATChat
And if not graph paper because you either don’t have any around or the student is resistant if you turn typical notebook paper to the side you have instant columns to line up your numbers #ATChat
A4: a goal for an 8 year old AAC user I see has been naming 2-digit numbers. (He could only say them in sequence.) We taught him where the numbers were on the keyboard in his device & he used that strategy for a bit. Then today he verbalized most correctly in bingo! #ATchat
Excellent ideas being shared in the chat tonight! These are not strategies and tools I'm seeing when I observe in classrooms. How are you getting your teachers to use these math ideas to reach all learners? #ATchat
And another thing I’ve learned as kids get older is it’s really important to give them the language to explain their math such as for instructing a para or other adults in how to do Multiplication having the language “make _____ groups of ____” has been very helpful #ATChat
While I do like "TechXpert"...I think it's all about how u have the conversation with the S. #ATchat I think allowing a S to understand that they intake via their "ears" is powerful & it's a part of who they are & just use those parts differently.

A5: many already mentioned. I really like Rekenreks. I held a make and take and first grade team made class sets. Hoping to buy some “real” ones next year. #atchat
Love the tools shared! Have some fresh ideas! Make them available to all and invite to consider. I’ve had success with @usekamiapp in LRE for math. #atchat

Connecting math to real life situations or "functional" skills. Trying to meet teachers where they are in the journey from functional classroom to an academic classroom. #atchat
I TOTALLY agree...Nothing beats the conversation and having the students start to describe it for themself! #ATchat. This is also a part of breaking that shame cycle...redefining learning and dialog with people Ss trust!
