#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.

Cyber cypher on Twitter with the hiphoped fam! Tonight 9pm EST #HipHopEd Discussing the impact of the Harlem Renaissance 100 years later and looking at Hip-Hop today… https://t.co/iNpikahQ6F
The Harlem Renaissance gives us a framework where academia and arts work together for the betterment of both and the community as a whole. #HipHopEd seeks to replicate this model
A lesson from #harlemrenaissance is that scholarship, art and activism are multimodal forms of democratic engagement. Move beyond rap lessons & feature other elements alongside. #HipHopEd
When I think of the Harlem Renaissance I am reminded of the debate of Art or Propaganda between Alain Locke & DuBois https://t.co/LGyp68WCjs Still such important convo in 2018 #HipHopEd

NASIR - The Film's intro and visuals instantly help place HH in the proper historical/political and cultural context https://t.co/52kdciO9E0#HipHopEd Nas is our Langston/Zora
Carl van vechten the first culture vulture ..a white writer who is credited fir discovering black artists but he does help young writers get access #HipHopEd lot of parallels lol
Definitely a cool perspective for students to explore from, to think of how history would be affected if social media were available. How might it have been different or maybe even the same as compared to current events? #HipHopEd
Push boundaries of teacher, artist, scholar to include rather than exclude. Crest room rather than take up space. Listen, vibe & build community. #HipHopEd#harlemRenaissance
1/2 We need to teach the Harlem Renaissance as a point on a continuum of Black art that reaches from the distant past to today and will continue on. #hiphoped
2/2 Study of the Harlem Renaissance needs to include connections to the Black Arts Movement of the 60's/70's and to the decades of hip hop history that are also mirrors of their times. Including the hip hop of right now which is burning as brightly as ever. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd if you're in NYC this weekend here is an opportunity to see the connectivity of our voice through music through time and locale @aprilRsilver

I’m particularly moved by Richard Wright, especially when he began writing haiku. You see his progress over the years, familiarizing himself with an unfamiliar framework that ended up flowing naturally in the end. #HipHopEd
García Lorca recorded his experience of Blackness during the Harlem Renaissance. He is non-black, a white-passing andalucian, and a lot more respectful than a culture vulture. #HipHopEd#FlamencoEnElAulahttps://t.co/QOQL6U6b3D
If we study where art projects movement and forward thinking, you often find mistreatment and injustice. Listen to Hip-Hop today and hear the message #HipHopEd#HarlemRenaissance100

If we identify the notable contributors from the Harlem Renassaince era and have students create a criteria; then have them identify voices today that have a similar impact in their opinion #HipHopEd
Zora and Kodak both from FLA both embrace black vernacular...bof are extremely versed and articulate with it and high intellectual and intentional in their artistry #HeadPeezy#HipHopEd
I love how García Lorca is part of the Harlem Renaissance but not quite a Harlem poet. He is aware of not being black but sees blackness as part of his gitano identity. I relate to that because that is how I feel about HH & #HipHopEd sometimes.

#HipHopEd the impact of race in America is undeniable. Other than changing mindsets, teacher prep programs or institutions like resegregating of cities, what are small changes that can be made to close the opportunity gap? Give kids more books? Offer writing centers after hours?
The #HarlemRenassaince = a period in time that gave birth to an eruption of art, social activism, and intellectualism. #HipHop is an art of social activism and intellectualism. #HipHopEd discusses of how education is a project of praxis involving art, social activism and 🧠ism.
I wonder if they would concentrate on mainstream or if they could identify those voices within their own communities. Connecting the criteria to the community would encourage students to see the value in their own communities & help teachers get to know the community #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd And what's remained in our written + oral Blk traditions-originating in #Africa, running through the Harlem Renaissance, and through HH, too-is the unique way that we relate to the word. It's deeper, more textured than a mere intellectual exercise. It's uniquely African

García Lorca on Nella Larsen (1/2):
"This writer is an exquisite woman, full of goodness and that melancholy of Negroes, deep and moving. She called for a meeting and only Negroes went." #HipHopEd
García Lorca on Nella Larsen (2/2):
"It is the second time I go with her, because she interests me greatly. In the last meeting there was no one whiter than me." #HipHopEd
HH, like many Black/Brown art forms, has been used as a vehicle for propaganda via US State funded programs like Next Level, diplomacy programs + even USAID which used HH as a tool in an attempt to unseat the Cuban Govt #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/yA0i5c19XFhttps://t.co/vZlYelIzV0

FGL on being the only non-black person present in an all-black space: "Black people are very good people. As I said goodbye, they all hugged me and the writer gave me her book with a dedication, which they considered a great honor not usually granted to any of them." #HipHopEd
Let's connect the dots. The US State Department also used Jazz as a vehicle for propaganda via similar "diplomacy" programs and "artistic/cultural" exchanges. The US sent numerous Jazz musicians like Dizzy Gillespie to the Cold War Front #hiphoped
The value of the contributions during the Harlem Renaissance wasn’t given by the community that was responsible for the pain. There is a lesson to be learned today in the commercial consumerism space #HipHopEd
So if the 90s was a golden age for hip-hop, and the 20s was a golden age for Communities of Color, where are we in creating a golden age for education? What does it "look like"? Half rhetorical question. #HipHopEd
We need to work to make writing, thinking, lecturing and visual art just as cool as recorded music so that all expressions can be valued and influence one another with our students as the practitioners #HipHopEd
Honored to have our event mentioned in #HipHopEd. Looking forward to making the link b/t traditional African orators + the modern day #HipHop MC. @tonibkackman is on the panel this Fri (12/14) so it can't help but be great!! Info: https://t.co/3iGcFyOqrc. Thank you @tdj6899

I’m sorry, jumping in late but Langston Hughes is an absolute pillar of literacy for our movement! The man was a legend for putting raw emotion into written form, and that’s NOT easy. #HipHopEd
To connect the dots even more...
The U.S. State Department sent numerous Jazz musicians like Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong to the cold war front, the Middle East, Europe & beyond with propaganda in tow.

Also, you can check out the film The Jazz Ambassadors to learn more.
The film doesnt go into extreme depth about how the US exploited Jazz musicians to do their dirty work (via culture/arts/diplomacy programs), but it is a decent overview.

Similarities of #HarlemRenaissance & #hiphoped abound from being informed by & informing the voice of oppressed communities, being birthed in a NYC borough, & inspiring global expressions.
1996. I am in the 8th grade, a Mexican girl studying in Mexico in a school that is part of a network for US expats. I'm not American and I am too brown to be in this elite bilingual school. I'm reading Theme for English B. I'm safe/saved. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd follow @TheFadaraGroup to gain insights into how our music is universal in its appeal and how it is essential that it is presented as such to our students @aprilRsilver

#HipHopEd Looking at the Harlem Renaissance mainly through the lens of Alain Locke, I think pluralism was essential. Different perspectives were sought and discussion and debate were encouraged. Is this true of Hip Hop? At its core I think it is, but commercialism is a threat.
As we prepare for the break, challenge yourself to evaluate your contributions to the #HipHopRenaissance that is taking place but needs our full support #HipHopEd
More García Lorca: "I believe being from Granada leads me to understand and sympathize with the opressed: the gypsy, the Negro, the Jew, the Moor, that everyone carries inside." #HipHopEd

Feel the gov't indictment of Tekashi69 has very concerning obscure objectives that are being discussed enough...Our power/voices is at risk of either being pimped or prosecuted if we don't tiptoe #HipHopEd
Love this! It takes the teacher embracing this role so they can then facilitate students to also see themselves as leaders and contributors within the movement #HipHopEd

It is safe to imagine that there was a level of bravery rooted in being tired of being silent that led to many of the offerings from the #harlemRenaissance We should be at the same point as Educators #HipHopEd
